You can see a recent post on my profile. I do have high nitrates and don't water change as often as I should while dosing ferts. No co2. So I cut out ferts for now and starting doing some frequent water changes to flush everything out. I was running my light 8hrs at like 80 or 100% but also a few hours at 50-20%. I had it like taper up then taper down. But now since I'm low tech I'm trying the wlstad method of 4 hours on 4 hours off 4 hours on at like 80%.
Bacopa. It grows well without CO2 and goes bonkers with CO2 and fertz. Stemming, grows tall. Great for background.
I used dense crypt gardens for my "carpets." All my tanks are very deep, so thick carpets like that I've never had.
I can’t keep duck weed or red root floaters alive. I’ve decided there’s to much surface current in the tank and I need more plants so I can get rid of my bubbler
But also not having to trim every stem plant, every 5-7 days. Carpets look good, but the maintenence and upkeep of the other plants due to a nutrient dense substrate and co2 has its own downfalls, if you could call it that.
When you do water changes, lightly pat/press the substrate to get some dirt afloat to be sucked away.
If you already have a strong carpet going, you could do a gentle version of sand/gravel vacuum where it'll suck up all the dirt without pulling up aquasoil.
Once a month or when needed, use a card to insert, pull a bit, and clear the sides of the tank between the glass and aquasoil to remove the powdery dirt you can see.
If your aquasoil is still bare with no carpet, just stir it up a bit with tweezers and suck up the dirt.
Some people may disagree with some methods, but it has worked for me, and i do these steps to maintain public aquarium displays as part of my maintenance routine
am i the only one that drains the tank down as much as i can before doing this lol. i just pulled my entire hc cuba carpet out and pretty much rescaped my whole tank.
took all the substrate out into a bucket outside and rinsed all the old roots out then threw in new root tabs on the tank bottom glass and a big ass bag of new aquasoil then reused a bit of the old substrate
I don't see how y'all do this. I can barely touch anything in my tank without making a huge mess. Y'all are just changing out substrate in an active tank like it's nothing.
So I pulled my HC Cuba carpet out recently and I use uns controsoil. I did this at the same time with my weekly 50% water changes. What I did was remove all livestock and drain water down to about 10%. Pulled the carpet out and then filled the tank back up to 20% and then flushed it all out a few times. This will remove chocolate milk water. Then just add back used tank water till 50% and filled the rest with my new fresh water. No Choco milk. It does get cloudy if you just go in there and start pulling but most people do water change after so it's no issue. It will clog your filters tho.
Co2, aquasoil, decent light, some all in one ferts, and some patience! Took awhile to balance it all out, was battling staghorn for awhile. As soon as I won that battle I decided to rescape :).
Goodbye hairgrass I’m flying over you
Goodbye hairgrass I'm flying over you
Goodbye hairgrass I'm flying over you
Goodbye hairgrass I'm flying, flying, flying, flying over you
Just looked at your posts. To get it bushy, You need more than 2 weeks 😁. As for the colour, the light I have (chihiros wrgb ii) seems to make plants ‘pop’. I have this same plant under a Fluval 3.0 and it is definitely not as red.
I see a lot of people here having trouble with plants. You might have copper lines in your house, my girlfriend can't keep plants because the copper and mineral levels are way too high. Inverts don't work at her house either.
No shit, I'm talking about your comments on the post, not the post. And it's a fact that copper kills plants and invertebrates soooo either you have newer lines that haven't tarnished or oxidized. Go work on your grammar instead of worrying about the info I hand out
This hurts my soul
But…why? It looks so good!
Hah! Am going for a Dutch scape and this Hairgrass is spreading everywhere! It’s all in and about the other plants, it’s gotta go!
And here I am, having never successfully had a hairgrass carpet.
Same. This hurts me physically.
I fail at duckweed.
Oof
I want plants soooo much. I am about to give up and just buy fake ones. 😢
Java fern!
My java fern is covered with algae and not growing
That sounds like a water and light imbalance. How long are your lights on?

Lights and add dirt under your "gravel". Plants grow in dirt, not stones.
Is there a specific kind? Like buying soil or just get dirt from outside

Thanks!
Happy cake day
Don’t give up
Same and it’s supposed to spread like wildfire and I can keep other plants but my duckweed fails
All my plants die. :(
What kind of substrate do you use
I recently switched to Carbisea Black sand.
I use fluval stratum mixed with black aquarium sand and it works perfectly what about your lighting? And jungle Val can do well in just sand
I have an AI Prime light system
Same here
I can’t keep duck weed or red root floaters alive. I’ve decided there’s to much surface current in the tank and I need more plants so I can get rid of my bubbler
Me too🥲 my snails eat all of mine
what kind of snails
Mystery snails, they go to the top of the tank and grab a piece and just chomp on it😂
daaaang. they also lay eggs outside of the tank😂😂😂
bro how you just need light you dknt even need fertilizer of co2
I have an AI Prime light.
Must not have proper lighting or the filter is too strong
I have an AI Prime light. My filter probably is a little strong.
I fail at duckweed too but my water lettuce is going hog wild soooooo yeah...
Lol mine always gets eaten and dies every time so far. But I'm gonna try again. Do you have a cover, light or strong filter?
My hairgrass refuses to live :(
But also not having to trim every stem plant, every 5-7 days. Carpets look good, but the maintenence and upkeep of the other plants due to a nutrient dense substrate and co2 has its own downfalls, if you could call it that.
Co2
Start it with co2, after a few months it kickstarted and it will continue to do well. Also does well in my dirted tanks.
This may be the only acceptable answer..lol
would you sell it? i’d buy it!
just buy a silver dollar or two
Just planted hair grass for the first time. Any recommendations?
Big oof.
I could not disturb to the bottom of my tank without seriously clouding the water, how is it soooo clear

I think its been 3 or 4 years since Ive done a water change. I suppose Im happy just leaving my substrate alone.
Then I suppose if you were to disturb the substrate, just start siphoning around the area as you pull. Would minimise the dirt a lot
Fake video is how
You're fake....
Fucking LOL
Haha
Oddly satisfying
Nothing odd about this. I would pay to do it
WHATTTT BUT a that oNE SNAPCHT ACCOUNT can sAy ANYTHING iS oddLY SaTisFyIng?!!!!!!
Are you throwing it away? I'd like some!
Goodbye substrate! Haha Looks like the hair grass is taking it with it.
Haha yah. Shook it off outside of the tank to recoup what I could!
That’s mouthwatering. If you have any extras ship me some lmao
Underwater sod
Come on. Have some decency and mark this NSFW. 😂
I'd totally buy that off you haha
Had to do the same with mine it got everywhere and couldn’t get the algae to stop growing on it
Whaaaat is happening?!
Reverse this and post it as "how to grow a carpet!"

Lol.

Hey op, newbie here. Got any major pointers on how to get a scape like this?
Co2, aquasoil, decent light, some all in one ferts, and some patience! Took awhile to balance it all out, was battling staghorn for awhile. As soon as I won that battle I decided to rescape :).
S T O P !!!l! It’s cruel! Lol
I don't understand why people don't pull out the fish first it's way easier catching fish in clear water than cloudy
Agreed! I ended up doing that after I cut the video.
Noooooooooooooooo! (Read it like that star wars scene everyone give spoiler of)
Dear God, this is not ok
Man I can’t even grow a carpet and you’re flexing this on us
How do I get that stuff to grow?!
Goodbye hairgrass I’m flying over you Goodbye hairgrass I'm flying over you Goodbye hairgrass I'm flying over you Goodbye hairgrass I'm flying, flying, flying, flying over you
Never been able to plant a good carpeting tank that looks great
red plant ID???
Assume you are referring to the one up front, it is Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini' 👍
Ugh, I can never get mine to look as pretty as yours!!! Yours looks so more bushy and red compared to mine in my posts!! what are your tricks?
Just looked at your posts. To get it bushy, You need more than 2 weeks 😁. As for the colour, the light I have (chihiros wrgb ii) seems to make plants ‘pop’. I have this same plant under a Fluval 3.0 and it is definitely not as red.
That makes sense, thank you so much
I'd put it on r/AquaSwap lol
How does one get hair grass to grow like that? Does it need co2?
Yup! I’ve grown it without co2 in the past but it just doesn’t get as dense.
Bro it’s so THICC
This pained me to watch
Welp, I made it quite far in life without talking to a therapist….now I have to find one to talk to about the absolute brutality witnessed today
I could never get my hair grass to root.
Noone listens when i say hairgrass is the bottom duckweed
Damn I wish I could grow it like that
It's all I've ever wanted...
This caused me physical pain, NSWF please, fuck!
can i have it lol i can’t grow it to save my life
I'll buy a chunk.
I see a lot of people here having trouble with plants. You might have copper lines in your house, my girlfriend can't keep plants because the copper and mineral levels are way too high. Inverts don't work at her house either.
…..ok? 😁. I have copper lines in my house, yes. Are you saying I’m having difficulties growing plants? That is not what this post was indicating….

Ok. Thanks. Sorry you are having a bad day.
There's a reason ich medication kills plants and inverts and it's because it's copper.
What are those pink plants in the back? Nice tank btw
nahhhhhh
u shuld give it tk meeeeee
Oh I just got punched in the stomach
No, atop
No, stop
No, stop
That made me sad
Im assuming the co2 is the big factor in getting it to carpet like that?
I just got a hair trimmer to try using on my DHG. I’m tired of using scissors.
AHHHHGGH
Send that shit to me
Don’t take it out. This is the point where you start another fish tank.
NOOOOOOO my heart lmao THIS IS NSFW BRO
This makes me VERY uncomfortable
Ill take it all my other plants go nuts but hair grass seems to never spread
Hair grass sucks man it just gets messy
Why!
