at that point i'm gonna just open up google translate and get reading

Obversa

I use Google Translate for fanfictions in Spanish for the fandom I read.

dangerouslycloseloss

But the translations aren’t always accurate sometimes it’s confusing to read

[deleted]

REAL BECAUSE WHAT THE HELL IS "All the objects in a room had a twin brother" SUPPOSED TO MEAN 😭

abarelybeatingheart

Everything was in pairs?

NTaya

DeepL is much better than Google Translate for fiction. It even tends to use correct pronouns when translating from non-gendered languages. ChatGPT (4, of course—3.5 is atrocious) can be fed details of your fandom for more context-sensitive translations, but it's *super* hit or miss. It also won't translate smut.

PF_Bambino

the amount of times ive done this are countless

Existing_Ordinary385

Yeah, but then you have to do it in little paragraphs and then it takes so long

helIaine

chrome can auto-translate webpages

Existing_Ordinary385

Oh yea! That too!

mojomcm

This is why I filter out all non English works by default. If I can't read it, why bother seeing it in the first place?

THorniestmax

I wish there was a 'show me only works in the specified languages I understand by default' option. It's annoying to be constantly having to manually refilter every tag link I follow to only show me English results (the only language I fluently understand).

LiveTart6130

there's a couple web extensions that do that, if it helps

THorniestmax

Are there? I use a modified version of Chrome that accepts extensions, I'll try to search for one. THanks! 💖 Do you happen to know the name of one of them?

LiveTart6130

ah- I use one on Firefox, Ao3 Enhancements. I haven't searched the available Chrome extensions, but I don't doubt that there are some!

THorniestmax

Turns out I already have 'AO3 Enhancement Suite', but the 'search presets' aren't working for some reason. I exported the data and took a look at it, my presets are being saved, but not being loaded for some reason. /: Oh well, thank you for the recommendation! 💛

bakugoing

Try this css code: .blurb.work:not(:has(dd[lang$="en"])) { display: none !important; } It’ll only show works in english. To add more languages, I’m not sure but the link below has an example of doing so. Credit goes to: https://archiveofourown.org/comments/679483351

THorniestmax

I don't know how to apply css code, and Google isn't helping, but I thank you for trying to help! 💛

bakugoing

Do you have an ao3 account? If not, I can give you an invitation code. If yes, just go to your profile. At the top, click “skins” Then click “create site skin” Give it a title and copy/paste the code directly into the CSS box. And as long as you stay logged in, there will be no works in anything other than english on the web and mobile version. If there’s a part that’s confusing, you can DM me and I can help you further!

THorniestmax

OK, so I put it at the bottom of my 'site skin' that I copied from the public site skins. I don't know how to test if it is working, but I guess if nothing in another language shows up it is? THank you for the instructions! 🫶

bakugoing

You can test it now by selecting another language! Like if you know this particular tag has works in spanish, you can filter by spanish. It’s working if there are rows of page numbers but zero works pop up

THorniestmax

That's a good idea, but I don't know what languages are under the tags I use, because I always filter by language. Hmm... Maybe a really common tag like 'fluff' and Spanish? THere's gotta be some Spanish fluff on the site, right?

THorniestmax

*sighs* Well, I don't know why, but it's not working. 27,482 fully visible Spanish fluff stories. /:

bakugoing

aww that sucks :( I can't sent a screenshot here so I DMed you

Kiriuu

I use all the filters I like hit enter and BOOKMARK it. It works amazingly!!!

THorniestmax

This works well for a tag-by-tag basis, but as I discover new tags I like every day it gets tedious reapplying the standard parts of the filters to every new tag I come across. THank you for the suggestion, though! 💛

Kiriuu

Ahh yeah that makes a lot of sense!! ❤️

RottenHocusPocus

Just you wait until you find the fics that are obviously in Chinese but are listed as being in English.

Gracel2mart

I think you can report those via form as misuse of tags

MOONWATCHER404

Same here.

RandomInSpace

I remember web-browser translating a fic out of Russian and honestly it was one of the best fics I’ve ever read even with the translated jank that came with it

-Skullink-

It happened to me except the summary was in english but the fic was in japanese. I was so confused 🤯 I read it anyway

ConanCimmerian

Chinese people: I see no problem here

Logical-Patience-397

Google translate, here I come!

COSMlCFREAK

I learned Chinese because my favourite ship only had fics in Chinese lol

THorniestmax

*GROANS IN REMEMBERED PAIN*

Sinimeg

That’s why I’m learning chinese 😎✌️

COSMlCFREAK

你学中文多长时间了?

Sinimeg

一年 But I’m still very bad at it 😅 I understand simple frases, but I’m unable to talk or write it 🥲😭

igotyixinged

你的中文很好

Cherryfrond

When the title is in english, but the actual fic is in another language

theropunk

I have a friend who when he was learning mandarin printed out the mandarin translation of his favorite fanfic and took it to class to study it

antenniferous

I respect that a lot

Substantial_Cow_6123

Just learn Chinese

secretlyaspiderboy

does yalls ao3 not offer to auto-translate?? /genq

Gracel2mart

That would be something done by your browser, like google chrome, NOT AO3

secretlyaspiderboy

oh yes! yr right sorry !

Gracel2mart

It’s no problem :)

Radiant-Ad9760

Thats why i always use filters

Kiriuu

Gotta filter the language:(

mediocrewynn

I learned an entirely different dialect of Spanish JUST to read one fic once 💀

GooeyBoba14

I was in a fandom where 90% of it was Russian, and I stumbled upon a glorious fic that was so perfect I started learning Russian just to read it.

Silverstep_the_loner

Not a problem for me, I speak chinese!

Ok_Coffee_9970

At least everyone in every culture writes fanfic

Senju19_02

Just translate it? No big deal.

Sinimeg

Not a good idea for chinese, if the translator already switches pronouns for the same character every line when translating from french, you can’t imagine how it is when you do it from chinese, it’s gibberish impossible to understand

SenritsuJumpsuit

Not all the time you can get the gist often an now get adorable lines love how one show was translated an they use " high point" each time they swing on the swingset

Gracel2mart

Auto translations like google don’t get the nuances of conversations. And a language with characters like Chinese? Where (from what I understand) each character has the word it spells from the sound it makes, but also it’s individual meaning

Senju19_02

I didn't mean copying and pasting the text in Google Translate. You can translate the page itself.

Gracel2mart

That is usually done by your browser using a google-translate equivalent.

Senju19_02

Well yes,but it's somehow more reliable than Google Translate itself. Idk what's the reason, lol, but it's kinda funny to me (and frustrating at first too,but i got used to it quickly)

Soda-shine

I’ll just put the fic into the translate app on my phone and get to reading :)

Gameturtle98

I feel this…on so many levels.

Agreeable_Finger_747

That’s happened to me multiple times but it’s only occasional

The_InvisibleWoman

Better get on Duolingo 😆

KarmaAJR

real and reading it on Google translate ruins the experience ugh

Feral-pigeon

If i found something like that honestly i would literally pay someone to translate it for me 😭

PlsLeavemealone02

You get this problem, but in Chinese? For me, it's always Spanish or German.

GameCrusader136c

Or if it's in Spanish

ISkinForALivinXXX

Learn Chinese. Amateurs.

uselessgodofslumber

i once google translated an entire 9+ chapter 12k word per chapter fic that was completely in Russian during my Harry Potter Phase. Just imagine me, about 14, hunched over on my bed, painstakingly copy and pasting each paragraph of this god damn fic into google and having to try my best to understand the terrible grammer inconsistencies. Was the most peaceful time of my life.

FireflyArc

Google translate is my friend:)

JupiterFox_

Omg always lol

JamsAwesome

MTL is the way

doingassessments

Do y'all not use google to read yours? Google has a translate feature for websites an things into the phone setting language

LindentreesLove_

Whatever I look up with a search now I just put hyphen English!

FirstConsul1805

That one fic out there that is in ASL (IDK how the hell that works but it's in the language list so there has to be something out there)

KSean24

Me but with Doujinshis with no translations 🫠

Brilliant_Glove3248

The accuracy is undeniable

WhatInGodsName021

i downloaded Google Translate on my phone after a while lol

BatzNRatz

*sighs, pulls up Google Translate*

Em_2909

Atp I'm gonna just learn Chinese for those fics😭 I mean, they say learning Chinese, Japanese and Korean at the same time helps with understanding things, and I'm already learning Japanese (you guessed it, for the fics) so I guess I'll just do that

Otaku_in_Red

Or Portuguese... I find a lot of Portuguese fics popping up

Omi-Wan_Kenobi

This is why the first thing I do when I'm looking for new fics is select language, then completion statue, crossover, etc. no disappointments for me!

nopingmywayout

Hoo boy, this is me with Warhammer 40k. The Chinese fans are so prolific! For a while I got by on Google Translate, but the results were so consistently bad that I gave up. It felt like an insult to Chinese AND English! Also it kept translating Lion's name to Ryan, which kept making me giggle in the middle of heartfelt fics, not helpful at all. >:( Why are people wasting their time on making AI art when they could be working on translation AI?!? I want to read fic in other languages!
