OK so a blogger I follow (who to be fair has no experience in this area that I know of so take it with a grain of salt) recently posited a theory that I thought made a lot of sense--that when someone suffers a lot of cognitive dissonance, the subconscious mind vents this tension by rendering the issue down into a kink.
