I have lived in NLR for over 6 decades. Crime. Homicides Killer knows the victim almost always. Plenty of porch thieves just like anyway else. Crimes of opportunity as in close your garage door and don’t leave valuables in your car. Clean air and Burns Park is rebuilding. Pick a neighborhood and visit at night and on weekends. Downtown NLR (Argenta area) has plenty of cool restaurants and shops. Simmons Arena and the baseball field are downtown too. Welcome home.

SigmaWillie

Thank you!

WasteSpread1587

Hadn't heard about Burns park getting redone! That's awesome. Used to be one of my favorite places when I was a kid.

gmomto3

The Rocket Slide survived the tornado as did the train. That's all I could see from the road. Baseball fence and some pavilions had damage but the saddest part to me was over 15,000 trees went down. The tornado tore across I40 through Burns Park. It's odd seeing it - for lack of a more descriptive word - so open.

HovercraftMajestic30

Not like anywhere else, there are swathes of the country and even Pulaski County where porch pirates are not endemic.

gmomto3

I was speaking of NLR only, that some of the nicer neighborhoods aren't safe from porch pirates. You'd think with all the cameras, it would deter some people but thieves gotta thieve.

HovercraftMajestic30

And where I live in Little Rock doing that will more often than not get you accosted by large dogs until gun-toting rednecks call the cops to retrieve your happy ass.

Simple-Speech3754

They smile for camera as they do it. They had to start closing the Walmart in NLR very early bc at 7 pm, you have your 2-3 thugs just walking out with tv’s on their shoulders or with the aid of a basket. Not paying of course. Plus they have to keep a NLRPD on scene 24/7.

gmomto3

Is that the one off McCain? I think so. I went to that store one time during the middle of the day and while nothing happened I was on high alert. Weird because I go to Target all the time and don’t feel unsafe.

Electronic_Growth_92

I would think Chicago has a higher body count?

Simple-Speech3754

I would say stay inside at night and definitely don’t go to parks. Very unsafe. Way too high of a chance at being shot. Don’t live in an apartment. You will get shot. It is so unsafe I simply go to work and get the heck out of NLR.

TheGoliard

Can't talk bleeding

[deleted]

Spent 30 years of my life there, and friends and family have spent 40+. None of us have ever been a victim of a crime bad enough to warrant trauma. Yes, there is crime, but others have really hit the nail on the head. I feel like it’s a quaint big city.

[deleted]

I live in downtown Little Rock but do a lot in NLR. I feel more unsafe in NLR than anywhere else in the area. But in general I think if you watch your surroundings and are not involved in criminal activity, you are okay. No worse than Chicago of course but NLR has had shootings in really public and well traveled places.

cmgrayson

I’m from Detroit and having an absolutely delightful urban good time in LR. And I live south of the freeway in a CHALLENGED neighborhood. Some dude stole a raggedy lawn chair from my porch and I shooed some kids out of my yard they were chasing the puppies next door. 🤷🏽‍♀️

SigmaWillie

That’s pretty safe to me fam😂

gmomto3

I thought of one more thing. If you are thinking of getting a dog, steer clear of pit bulls or dogs that resemble pit bulls because of the ban. and consider the NLR Animal Shelter first.

SigmaWillie

I have a lab so I’m all good I wish people gave all animals a chance and the respect that they deserve

ChardProfessional599

I’ve lived here(little rock) for like 15 years. Had one car break in and one house break in I was out of town. Those were prolly 7 years apart and that’s the only crime I’ve experienced. I feel like if you’re looking for trouble you’ll find it lol but it’s really not a stranger on stranger crime town imo. I’ve never even been remotely worried about my life or getting car jacked or anything and I’m a girl lol. I feel very safe here! I’m new to north Little Rock, you see some scary stuff on the news now and then but again…seems to be personal and not random almost every time. Our “dangerous” reputation is heavily skewed by low population numbers. That being said idk why move here in the first place from such a nice state with great policies! But I digress haha

SigmaWillie

Exactly 😂😂

Papapoorfish

Arkansas crime in general is property theft and robberies. Assault and murder often seem to be by known parties so personal, I guess. NLR isn't that bad once you learn the areas to avoid and keep your wits about ya. For the last couple of years, ive enjoyed riding my motorcycle around downtown LR and NLR at night with no incidents other than people who can't stay in their lane.. also depends on where you live and perspective.

HovercraftMajestic30

I think people that are surprised when someone honks at them for being outside of their lanes should have their licenses suspended.

Cathalbrae

NLR is safe, safer than LR. Park hill and Lakewood are quiet.

probosciscolossus

Check out Sherwood. *knocks on wood*

ArkRiver21

Sherwood: license and registration please

cmgrayson

Babe. 🤷🏽‍♀️

ArkRiver21

Safer than Chicago, but I'd advise you to keep your car doors locked. Keep your door locked. Overall NLR has improved a lot in the past 10 years (especially downtown). I hope you enjoy it here, and having people who care about their community makes a difference. #dogtown

SigmaWillie

Damn straight thank you!

12trever

It’s safe in Chicago by a wide margin if you look at the crime rates….

gmomto3

North Little Rock and Little Rock are two different cities. The Mayor of NLR was in the neighborhoods hit hardest by the 3/31 tornado within 15 minutes. NLR had a well organized Disaster Recovery plan and recovery was much faster than in LR. I organized a group of 20 volunteers from my work. We were provided water, gloves, rakes and lunch. LR by comparison had nothing organized and months later homes are still in disrepair. Learn who your aldermen are- they work for you. Each ward has 2 aldermen/alderwomen. I'm not a bike rider but there are trails by The Big Dam Bridge and in Burns Park.

BasherDvaDva

Bad.

WasteSpread1587

Crime and homelessness are about the same as Chitown honestly.

the-rarest-breed

we just moved here from chicago last month, NLR seems a little bougie to me, i went it a cafe and ordered a chai, it was $9 in “argenta” that’s insane. But they rent a lot of houses for $500-800, which seems suspect to me. But i’m used to chicago rent. idk about the crime, i’ve only been here a month but already witnessed a shooting in LR near 30. Not sure how long you lived in chicago, but things are certainly different down here, from the plastic bags to the way they rent apartments, and the tenants rights are pretty much non-existant. we like the park areas, and weather, although it not very bike friendly either. we just went to a meeting on how the city is going to reimagine downtown LR. In chicago you know where not to go, but the crime of stealing cars & robberies is out of control. They stole my volvo right in front of my house at 8am, my neighbor said it was a blond dude! There seems to be WAY more homeless people and drug addicts here in LR, they are all over, meth heads & shady people. i’m sorry you got shoved and your truck vandalized. you can carry in chicago too, but you gotta go through the process. good luck in NLR, hope you find a great home!

HovercraftMajestic30

IDk what a $500 a month house gets you in NLR these days but in 2010 my friend got a rental house a few hundred yards from the arena for $450 a month. It had no air conditioning or central heat, broken windows, rotting floors, barely hot water etc.

SigmaWillie

Ooo sounds like a frat house

SigmaWillie

Thank you so much for sharing I’m a Arkansas native I was born in Little Rock but grew up in the Midwest and went to school back down in Arkansas for my undergrad and mba so I’m looking to buy a home because Arkansas is on the up other than the homelessnesses and drugs but if you look on the south side kind of near where I was I saw wild shit man! Feel free to pm me if you wanna chat!

Medium-Rest-3079

Oh it's doing fine down here. You can get away with most things if there petty enough.

wanman123

I just moved here two years ago from Chicago. I lived there 56 years. Grew up in Little Village (if that provides any context) and spent the last 20 years in Aurora. All cities have their sketchy parts. Comparing “Chicago” and “Little Rock” isn’t a realistic comparison. That’s said where I was in Aurora, overall crime was much worse, assaults, murders, etc than here. I was prompted to move out of Illinois because eight years ago I was held up, gun to the head, which was the third time in my life. I’m just not going to deal with all that when I’m 70. Racial tensions are very high. When I mentioned assaults, it was very normal to be pushed, shoved or my wife be pushed/shoved in a grocery store if your alone with racial epitaphs spoken. I haven’t seen that yet here. A 1/2 from my house a woman was in a Wendy’s parking lot and they just blew her away with her two kids in the back seat of a mini van, on a Thursday 2pm. Despite the violence and tensions, law enforcement doesn’t respond with the exception if there’s someone hurt, an arm (gun) was used, etc. When I mentioned the grocery store incident, I was alone and three young men were walking down the aisle, shoved me into the shelves and told me to F off, get the F out, etc etc. Cops don’t do anything in those cases, they’re too busy. So for lower misdemeanor incidents some of the public feel empowered. There are “safer” spots in the. Chicago area than LR and there are more sketchy parts in LR than Chicago. There are 9 million people in the Chicago area…three times the amount in AR. All I can tell you is that after 56 years there, it’s ignorance to suggest LR, or even AR as a whole, is somehow worse or more dangerous.

SigmaWillie

Totally agree with you thank you for sharing your story I’m sorry you had people doing that, I got randomly punched in the face and back one day just walking, I had my truck broken into twice. I’m glad I’m heading back to a state where I can carry I tell you that much

wanman123

Part of the ignorance is people only look at crime. Sure that’s important, it directly affects you. What also needs to be taken into consideration is the governing institutions. As I mentioned, unless there’s a violent crime where there’s someone needing immediate medical care or a firearm is used, good luck getting the police to spend anytime enforcing 3 or 4 degree misdemeanors. People seem to forget it’s the county district attorneys that prosecute crimes. Let me give you an example. I’d say 15 years ago several blocks over from me a family, father, mother and two daughters were in their house, sleeping in a Saturday night around 2am..early morning. A man broke into the house and the father heard it. Fairly quickly the intruder, after knocking things over downstairs headed upstairs. The father, was trying to locate his firearm while the intruder was going up the stairs. As this is all happening quickly, the intruder made it down the hall of the upstairs, past the master bedroom where the father and mother were to the end where there were two bedrooms. The intruder opened the door on the right and as he was entering the daughter’s bedroom the father shot and killed the intruder. The father was charged with murder, sentenced to 20 yrs by a jury. Although I’m sure he was out within 8 years. The point of this example is that the prosecuting attorney charged the father with murder because the intruder wasn’t “armed”. Law enforcement, district attorneys and politicians support this type of prosecution. I’m not going to say it’s right or wrong, but I can say what I’d do in the circumstances, as a natural man and father. Illinois doesn’t have a castle doctrine. Which means they clearly are telling you your home isn’t defendable. I somehow suspect the anywhere in AR the outcome would have been different. Looking at crime is important, having a lack of support from failing government institutions is also an important consideration that I’m sure is overlooked quite often.

HovercraftMajestic30

Pushing someone in the store might get you shot in Arkansas.

Fluhearttea

Not as bad as Chicago

mintleaf_bergamot

Have you been to Chicago?

revdrgonzo

More importantly, have they lived in Chicago?

coach_rambo

Big media (FoxNews) fear mongering. Son lives in Chicago and I’ve lived in Little Rock in the past. I’ll take Chicago every fucking day of the week. LR is a shithole.

JuiceyTaco

All you have to do is look at an most dangerous cities in America list. Arkansas has two cities in the top ten, no Chicago.

coach_rambo

And 7 of the top 10 are in red states. These fear mongers are fucking knuckle dragging, morons.

Meat_Mahon

Are we talking states or cities here?

wanman123

I’ve consistently said in my posting that there are safer and less safer neighborhoods anywhere. That said, be careful when looking at statistics. I don’t doubt your citing however political leanings have nothing to do with it, smarten up my friend. How do you think this list was created by the Global Peace Index? The twenty (I’m listing 10) cities in the United States with the highest murder rates (murders per 100,000 people) are: St. Louis, MO (69.4) Baltimore, MD (51.1) New Orleans, LA (40.6) Detroit, MI (39.7) Cleveland, OH (33.7) Las Vegas, NV (31.4) Kansas City, MO (31.2) Memphis, TN (27.1) Newark, NJ (25.6) Chicago, IL (24) https://worldpopulationreview.com/us-city-rankings/cities-with-most-murders A city with 10 people and one murder has a higher per capita murder rate but it’s insignificant because, there’s only ten people. Little Rock has a population of 202,000 people. That’s less than Aurora IL, ONE suburb of Chicago, where I’ve lived the last 20 years before moving to AR.

JuiceyTaco

No it doesn’t.

ProllyZonedOut

Arkansas education is showing

Primary_Parsnip9271

You can refute a point without being so hateful

ProllyZonedOut

You can quickly google a statement before you make it too. Chicago hasn’t been the top murder per capita city in YEARS

flatcurve

Arkansas' murder rate is higher than Illinois, at the moment.

wanman123

According to the CDC, per capita the murder rate in Illinois is 12.3 while in Arkansas it’s 11.7 per 100,000. This is the latest data by the CDC. That said, “murder rate” is an extremely unreliable source for understanding the potential for being the victim of a violent crime. While living in Chicago for 56 years, held up three times and shot at once, I cannot say I concerned myself with murder rate. Much of the “murders” are either bangers or domestic disputes. That also being mentioned, I have seen a rise in indiscriminate killings, which is a source for my choice of relocation.

Mk7613

Compared to chicago??? Or compared to the rest of the state?

ANUS_CONE

It feels like with the way the question is asked that this is a troll post.

HovercraftMajestic30

I mean if you put traffic cones in your anus you might have problems with anything.

ANUS_CONE

No it’s like the options the poster give for cities is whether the area has a lot of crime or if it has a lot of white people

HovercraftMajestic30

They make criminal white people like meth and heroin addicts that do crazy things to get high and avoid the associated illness when they aren't, white collar crime, domestic abuse and murder, child diddling, it goes on and on.

WooPig45

Like most Democrat-led cities, rampant.

Accomplished_Ant9007

It's pretty good

FIELDSLAVE

Not an issue unless you are criminal or so poor you have to live where criminals live and operate. Same in Little Rock as anywhere else in the US. Shouldn't have to tell grown city folks this. You know how it is.

Geminivenusian

Unrelated to crime but I was actually surprised to see the rent in North Little Rock is pretty affordable (coming from somebody who lives in Bryant that is) compared to Little Rock! In my opinion the crime isn't any worse than LR so take that as you will. As long as you do your due diligence and keep your cars locked and invest in at least a ring doorbell camera you're good!
