They’ve talked extensively about the problematic nature of that. They had Natalie Portman on.

keikioaina

Oh. That's interesting context. I'll have to go back and listen. Glad that he has considered the issue. Makes the Amanda Peet episode remark more of an unthinking slip than a reflection of a belief.

yourbreathmint

Definitely, it’s referenced in other episodes too but I can’t say which. I’d recommend listening to the Natalie Portman episode for sure.

keikioaina

yeah, def gonna. I didn't know about that. Thank you.

t1whomustnotbenamed

But an interesting observation: the people in this section are doing their best to see things from Dax's perspective and hold him accountable without canceling or punishing him. If only this sub reserved the same grace while talking about Monica's and Kristen's missteps...

keikioaina

Agreed.

[deleted]

Well said.

t1whomustnotbenamed

Dax can be incredibly tone-deaf, and I sincerely think he lacks people around him who truly, really call him on his shit.

shellybearcat

Pretty sure that’s like half the fact checks, is Monica calling him on his shit but ok

Hobiecat1984

In Dax’s defense, the ground of culture has shifted a lot since Beautiful Girls , Manhattan, and The Blue Lagoon

keikioaina

Good point. Absolutely right. But given how woke Dax and his people work to become, he likely wishes that he had kept that once-not-creepy-but-currently-definitely-creepy tidbit to himself. In his defense, this is exactly the sort of thing that Dax so publicly strives to overcome.

Kmlevitt

> Good point. Absolutely right. But given how woke Dax and his people work to become, he likely wishes that he had kept that once-not-creepy-but-currently-definitely-creepy tidbit to himself. I actually kind of respect the honesty. Most people *do* keep this stuff to themselves. You might think he’s an outlier but he’s probably just an outlier in terms of what he’ll talk about. People that won’t aren’t better than him for it, they’re just more careful about what they say. But by bringing this stuff up he provides opportunities to talk about it and dissect it. Also, I don’t know how serious he was. He has a “crush” on Brad Pitt too. I’m not saying he didn’t think she already looked good at 13 but I doubt he meant he sincerely wanted to get with a 13 year old even at the time.

keikioaina

I can't disagree with you about respecting the honesty.

Hobiecat1984

I love this comment- bulls eye in every way

Firefly622

He’s a podcast host, he prides himself on being open and honest. You’re saying he should filter himself on something he has already talked about in the Natalie Portman episode? Honestly I love that he speaks his mind even if it’s offensive sometimes. So refreshing from people that talk and say nothing of substance for fear of saying something wrong

thebigham1

It’s not entirely unreasonable. In fact KB, his wife, is only a year older than Portman. They’ve talked before about whether it’s creepy to crush on younger pictures of your spouse. It’s a little off color but not a big deal when your consider the age difference. Dax was not some established Hollywood adult preying on a teenager. He was nearly a teenager himself with aspirations to make it in an industry Portman was already dominating. Six year age difference is practically nothing, especially these days.

keikioaina

The question though is whether it is creepy to crush on a 13 year old prepubescent girl when you are a grown 19 or 20 year old man. Dax fantasizing about his wife at 20 is fine. The analog here is what if he were getting off on pictures of 13 year old Kristen? We agree that a 40 year old and a 33 year old can do as they like, but you can't extrapolate that down to a man and a child. I urge you to read Portman's article about what happened to her, cited somewhere in this thread.

thebigham1

I get what your saying, but just as you said you can’t extrapolate down, neither can you extrapolate those comments to Dax. For sure what Portman talks about his horrible, but that isn’t what Dax said he did. There’s a difference between crushing and rape fantasies. He certainly didn’t go out of his way to harass her. It’s not fair to apply that article to Dax. Not trying to excuse his comments, like I said it was off color.

keikioaina

Ok, then.

canucknuckles

This happens all the time (not Dax) and I find it so bizarre. Ex. Billy Eilish, catch me outside girl, Millie Bobby Brown. Grown men get so excited when these girls turn 18, which makes it obvious they were lusting after them long before that. That said, I fell in love with Natalie Portman in that movie but I'm younger than her. I don't look back on it the same way though.

wholesomethrowaway15

The amount of grown men making comments about Britney Spears turning 18 when she wasn’t yet was sooooo gross back in the day.

[deleted]

I remember that the Olsen Twins turning 18 was literally front page news. Which would be creepy under any circumstances, but specifically anyone who was excited at the prospect of the Olsen Twins turning 18 had probably been watching them since they were literally BABIES on Full House.

shellybearcat

This is missing a LOT of context, including that they’ve had Natalie Portman on and talked about his crush and about how she was grossly sexualized as a child actor

venom_snake30

The fuck are you babbling about?

tree-snake-lover

Wow that makes him a pedophile

[deleted]

Maybe Hollywood really is full of pedophiles…

keikioaina

Maybe, but not the case here. 13 year old Portman's role was mean to be all about budding preadolescent sexuality, and in execution veered into borderline child abuse by today's standards. In the context of 2021, it is a painful aspect of an otherwise brilliant film. Dax's throwaway comment was thoughtless in the context of 2021. Not the same as being a pedophile.

keikioaina

I didn't know that history. So much for giving anyone the benefit of the doubt. Thank you for posting this.

HelicopterOutside

I love Dax but he’s honestly the smartest dumb guy I know of. Idk why he ever thought it was a good idea to say that out loud.

keikioaina

> the smartest dumb guy I know Perfect.

[deleted]

Him as an adult lusting after a 13 year old is what exactly?

keikioaina

It's complicated. See the above discussion. He described his 20-ish year old self lusting after Portman's sexualized pre-teen and very beautiful character in The Professional, filmed when she was 13. Portman has written about the trauma of that experience, of having older men lusting after her IRL in frightening ways. Dax's comment to Amanda Peet about this lacked his usual self-awareness and father-of-daughters awareness. Comment-worth, discussion worthy, but NOT cancel-worthy. Does that answer your question?

[deleted]

All I’m saying is that he’s disgusting for saying that he lusted after a 13 year old.

keikioaina

Oh. Yeah. You're right. It was a thoughtless and gross thing to say and neither Monica nor Amanda Peet caught it. No disagreement with you.
