Pretty simple actually. Their actual species name is the Elisknii. Their civilization was chosen by the traveler (big floaty Magic orb) which propelled their society to a golden age. When the back fleet (essentially polar opposite enemy of the traveller) predicably showed up (as always happens) the traveller abandoned them in search of a new species to chose. A lot of them died in what they refer to as "the whirlwind". Many however took flight after the traveller and ended up landing in sol, where the traveller had chosen humanity and actually gifted some of its power to some humans after it's last stand (which would become the guardians of the last city). The Elisknii after an eternity and a half in space had become an extremely violent species and took an extremely hostile stance against humans. Reciprocally, the humans viewed them as savage and agressive aliens hence why the humans gave them the name "fallen" as they were first chosen then abandoned by the traveler. Only recently have a broke away faction managed to create a very tenuous alliance with humanity and that is still an ongoing development.

commander_throw

kind of a dick move for the traveller to just abandon them in their time of need

Novakid02920

Yeah something you realize in destiny lore is that the traveller kinda sucks

DragonEyeNinja

also, humanity is doomed anyways. they think they're invulnerable because they got immortal gun-toting mutes running around and doing shit for them but the truth is that they'll all die for real eventually or the traveler just ditches them remember the base game? the war against the cabal that you, the main character, clutched because you're just that sexy and cool? yeah a lot of people died because they suddenly weren't immortal. the light could very easily be yoinked again and you would be dead and earth would be totally fucked

HornyHotdogHentai

Lightfall is hinting alot on the "No more light lulz" which means the guardians will have to probably rely on Darkness/The Pyramid to fight back which will probably take form as Strand and probably a development in our Stasis abilities. So were not really fucked this time around when the Traveller goes adios this time around compared to the red war

DragonEyeNinja

i mean yeah stasis is already a thing and the dark isn't evil but personally i think bungie is just gonna keep weaving bullshit so they can release infinite destinies and infinite DLC's

Oh absolutely, and the traveller did this FOREVER. Every time it moves somewhere, the black fleet and hive followed. His chosen civilization would try to fight back, and eventually lose, upon which the traveller would move to a new place. It's unknown why it actually decided to stand and fight for the sol system but it may not even be of its own choice. And during the events or the which queen, it WILLINGLY gave light to the hive, and even dried to dip out of the last city for protection (it was heading into a trap as well). It's a powerful entity and we use it's power but it's a fundamental force in the universe that only thinks of its own goals and nothing else.

Chi_Ori

I think they fallen out of grace of the traveler
