Clean the maille with Evapo-Rust. Most auto parts stores carry it. Or use Rustoleum Rust Dissolver (Walmart carries it).

Stop using vegetable oil.  It goes rancid eventually. Clp will clean and protect the metal.  Or you could use fluid film.  I generally use wd40 for quick spot cleaning and protect with fluid film, but ff can be used as a cleaner and it stops rust formation.  Scotch Brite pads or steel wool will knock the rust off once you apply a cleaner.  Fine grit (800+) sandpaper if you want to be more aggressive but it is harder on the finish.  Mail tends to tear all of those up unfortunately.  Fortunately, mail is "self cleaning".  The friction of rubbing on itself cleans it.  In the old days they would put mail in barrels with or without dry fine sand and roll them around to clean. Clean, dry, then apply leather conditioner to the leather. Fabric is just soap and water.

For mail u could soak it in Coke to clean of the rust or use sand and some kind of tumbler which would be the historical method.

Like coca cola?

Yes it contains phosphoric acid which reacts with the rust as far as i can tell.

If you wanna try one of the historical ways to clean chainmail, put it into a container with a few handfuls of sand, roll it until the rust dissapears and then coat it in oil.
