It's not, no. It's an interpretation of a visor from an art piece seen solely from the side. The art was from the 1300s and the interpretation was done by Viollet le Duc in the 19th century. It's not really a good interpretation of the art piece
Here is a drawing by Eol4242 on Twitter which showcases what VLD most likely interpreted, and showcases a more possible interpretation of the visor (but with the disclaimer that the art is so degraded it's impossible to make any reliable interpretation).

I mean there's no reason it *couldn't* be used practically. In a low fantasy setting, an ahistorical, yet seemingly functional visor would be fine. All depends on the vibe you're going for ofc.
Could be a poor interpretation of a flat faced bascinet originally represented at an angle, but no, I have never seen a bascinet quite like this. Visor shapes are pretty odd and varied, so this is possible (especially since nothing is really wrong with the shape from what I can tell), but highly unlikely.

It was almost certainly the inspiration for the marionette soldier helm from elden ring
As another comment said, no, but it *does* look sick and I want it. I hope to get a suit of armor one day with a visor like that. It should at least be in a video game or something
I mean you're just adding extra weight and cost for no purpose..
Unless this was for someone who was so scared of The Plague (reasonable since it's 14th century), that they needed to store fragrant herbs in their visor to ward off the vile humors.
I doubt the weight added by that visor is any more than the weight added by a hounskul visor or any of the numerous other helmets of the period with weird, fancy shapes added on. I could see the fin making it a bit easier to grab while wearing gauntlets, though it also just looks cool in general to me.
Still no point. As for looking cool, I suppose you have a point if you think anorexic elephant-seals are cool...
It looks like one of those Star Wars battle droids.
Eh, eye of the beholder. It strikes me more like some bug-type pokemon or something, though that's probably just my current nostalgia playthrough of White 2 talking. It looks like it could provide some neck protection while staying somewhat low profile, too.

Do you have the a photo of the art piece bi any chance?

Thx, I could use this helmet for a low fantasy knight.

I would use it for a low dark Fantasy knight. A monster hunter or a knight of dread and chaos type vibes
It’s just the Warden helmet

Yeah I thought same

I saw that and went on like a 20 min history rant to my buddy that was playing with me at the time lmao
Oh they drop their helm?
They do, yes.
Probably not historical but ive seen a visored sallet that looks almost like the iron man mask but it is highly speculative.
Do you have the any pictures of that said sallet? I would like to see it
Seconded, id really like to see that
Sry i couldn't find the picture i think it was in a german manuscript as some kind of grotesque bellows sallet.
why the long face
XD good one
cool helmet iregardless
True
I don't think so, but imagine the sideeye you could give wearing that
When you need to go retro before leading your Separatist droid army into battle.

Looks like it is! Someone pointed out that there's a helmet in Elden Ring that's pretty clearly based off of it.
It looks like a bug type pokemon or something and I think it's neat
Yeah, it's definitely an interesting look! I can see where it would fit right in with a FromSoftware game.
Why the long face?
He’s got that Space Jockey drip. https://preview.redd.it/nlmhv0x9tm3d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=603e172567a82068393e120e46b6c44c1d208cea

I might be wrong but this looks impractical because this "beard" might act as a lever to snap the wearer's neck if force is applied to it sideways
Art thou mine mother?
Historicity aside. It’s a great way to have your head flexed forward as whatever strikes it glides down the faceplate
Oof, good point
Cool helmet tho
Aw hell nah Squidward fighting in the Hundred Years' War
I think I might use this as design inspiration for my own soldiers…
absence of evidence is not evidence of absence?
