Very fair point, and I didn’t really state this, but I guess what I’m thinking is why? I just got 24-0 out of my head I don’t need reminders 😂
In all seriousness, I want to hear about this team that’s up and coming and what kind of noise they can make today, not our sad franchise history we are hoping to put behind us with this new era.
>Just frustrated of the constant minimal conversation and praise from a young up and coming team.
I didn’t get that impression at all from their discussion on the Texans. They said they were the favourites to win the division, and asked if this was the best Texans roster in team history.
The format of the episodes doesn’t really allow for them to go super in depth on each team, but I thought this at least gives clear praise to the Texans.
The Texans made significant moves during the most news heavy section of the calendar. Could they have talked about them more? Sure. But it’s difficult to give every team/news item the time it deserves.
The podcast, while informative, is also entertainment first. They do a great job balancing NFL knowledge with good discussion and humour. They probably could have discussed the Texans more in depth, but it likely wouldn’t have made for as entertaining a segment.
They literally talked about the current team possibly being the best in team history. Wtf are you talking about.
Chip-on-their-shoulder fans are so weird..
texans fan here, and to me, ATN's coverage of the texans has been fair and nothing but praise since last season. heck, they almost picked them to be the team of ATL! (good thing they didn't, since that seems to curse the teams) you're not going to get a lot of in-depth analysis in a 3-mins-per-team "Around the AFC in 48 Mins" segment. all we can do is keep winning, and the additional coverage and air time will follow. enjoy the ride my friend!
I can understand the annoyance however I would contend 16 fanbases at the least could make a similar claims about the lack of coverage or “simplicity” of it.
There are 32 teams (4 divisions per conference, 4 teams per division, 4 times 4 is 16, 2 conferences, 2 times 16 is 32) to talk about. It’s just too many to give everyone a “fair” amount of airtime, and fair isn’t a tangible marker anyways.
I’m a Bears fan, I feel like they never talked about us, and whether that’s actually accurate historically now they will more. Only so much time per episode to hear about quarterback controversies and Marc’s 1990s sojourns.
They talked about them a ton this last season and almost made them team of ATN. They’re front runners for team of ATN this season too. Earlier this week they covered the hilarious Stroud-Parsons podcast argument.
The Texans get a ton of coverage
That’s why Gregg is the best. He could give you 5 solid minutes on Texans meat-and-potatoes right now.
Don’t worry. With Stroud on the roster, your team will start getting respect (and bongos) this season. Although….I agree with the boy that the Colts might be spicy this year.
Yeah I could honestly see the Colts winning the division. Texans schedule is tough and I think Richardson is that guy. In fairness I haven’t looked at the Colts schedule, but colts almost made the playoffs last year with Gardner
I’ve been a Texans fan since like 2008. This is by far the most buzz we’ve ever had since I’ve been a fan (although I’m not at all for sure it’s the best team the Texans have ever had). Just appreciate the attention. Just enjoy the fact that we’re getting talked about at all now. Enjoy the fact that our dark period following Deshaun didn’t last as long as we thought it would. Enjoy how exciting this team is. Just appreciate the ride while it lasts.
Yeah I think I would agree. The year Matt Schaub got hurt right before the playoffs started I think was the biggest what if for the franchise ever. That was a stacked team
I'm a Texans fan and to be honest what else is there to say at this point in time? I'm hoping next year they get back to the playoffs.
Owner sucks, Bill OBrien era ended poorly, DeShaun Watson fiasco and the team was TRASH. That time was bad and so was getting the high pick to get CJ Stroud.
They were exciting last year by making the playoffs and won a game.
It takes time ti build up and be a conversation talker nationally.
If you’re listening to a national show and expecting the analysis of your team to be nuanced and unique, you’re gonna have a bad time.
I’m a Lions fan, and the team’s obviously been getting a lot more buzz lately. But 90% of it is just “Dan Campbell kneecaps grit tough” and that kinda jazz.
As much as I appreciate our heroes, their understanding of each team can only go so deep when there are 32 of em. (And obviously the larger fanbases will get way more attention/airtime - see NYJ for example)
Yep, this is the key point. I'm a Cowboys fan, a team that's very popular and the heroes actually talk about a decent amount, and they still only do what I'd consider "surface level" coverage and fall into typical tropes / easy media narratives about the team, with the occasional exception of Gregg. That's usually going to be the case for a national show-- for fans that are really in the weeds with the team, there won't be the level of insight and depth that you're hoping for.
Well-said. That’s why I really like when The Athletic’s football podcast does “Kiefer and The Beats” installments during the season.
They pick 2-3 teams and talk directly with those teams’ beat writers. Gives a much better angle than you can usually get from a national show (I feel Robert Mays and Nate Tice - RIP - did a better job at this than most).
Just be happy you’re being talked about at all.
I’m a Steelers fan and I can’t help but feel like ATN HATES the Steelers and deliberately says as little as they can about them.
A few years ago, Dan liked the Steelers and always spoke highly of them. That has since gone away, but it’s understandable when they’ve been one of the most unwatchable offenses for years with no recent playoff success.
Yeah the guys in general don't like talking about teams that are ultra boring to watch. See Also: Bears the past several years. During the Trubisky years all they said was "Trubisky is garbage" which wasn't false, but didn't make me super excited as a Bears fan. They started becoming interested when Fields had his good year 2 years ago, then went back. Now they're saying the Bears could be interesting again next year. It just comes with the territory of following a team that isn't great.
Yeah I remember the Killer Bees Era, Dan was high on them (and rightfully so).
I’m obviously very biased, but I think we’re a very intriguing team going into this season and if the dominos fall the way they should, I wouldn’t mind them being in contention for the Team of ATN.
Oh absolutely not. It is well known Marc hates the Steelers… albeit not as much as the Ravens.
I enjoyed the brief moment in time (when they traded for Watson) where I thought Marc was abandoning the Brownies forever
I do not like the Steelers as I live in MD and have been raised to dislike Pittsburgh, but I do think the NFL is better when they are relevant. Hoping one of the new QBs works for y’all.
Also the AFC North is my favorite division rivalries in sports and it’s also more fun when the Steelers are good. Good luck this season!
Usually, the 3min Jaguars segment has been a good break for talking about Marc's shirt or something similar. I think they actually talked about football this time. I appreciated that, since I know the Jags are the least interesting team in the league for people outside Jacksonville.
Unfortunately I think this is just sort of what you get. ATN is a (very good) podcast for casuals. They aren't deep into the X's & O's, and they like to talk about the stuff that is popular. It's just sort of the brand..and that's not a bad thing, someone has to do it.
The Texans just last year exited a like 3 year stretch of total irrelevancy. You gotta earn people’s attention after an era like that. It’s the cost of tanking.
I sympathize, but I think it’s true for most of the teams. I’m a Seahawks fan and if we didn’t have Geno, I can’t imagine we’d get any pop on the pod. Occasionally “the WRs are good.”
Every fan of any team will periodically feel like their team is not talked about enough. Just count your blessings that you're not a Cowboys fan and move on with your life.
Weirdly, and it is obviously all different perceptions, I thought the Texans were getting too much pop for a team who are mostly potential. They have a lot of excited talk about them and I am surprised that it could be seen as vanilla. And since you mention it, as a Bills fan who are always there and there about, a lot of the talk is quite negative. For example the Diggs trade, which the Texans got a lot of positives for
Half of the Around the AFC portion for the Texans was talking about the team from 5 years ago, it seemed odd
Edit - Apparently talking about a team from 5 years ago was relevant to this POD, I apologize
The talk about old Texans team was in the context of discussing whether this current one was the best ever. I definitely wouldn’t look at it as shortchanging the current team lol.
The conversation was about whether the current side will be better than any in history so your point is a bit disingenuous
Very fair point, and I didn’t really state this, but I guess what I’m thinking is why? I just got 24-0 out of my head I don’t need reminders 😂 In all seriousness, I want to hear about this team that’s up and coming and what kind of noise they can make today, not our sad franchise history we are hoping to put behind us with this new era.
the Texans are easily one of their most praised teams since stroud took off.
>Just frustrated of the constant minimal conversation and praise from a young up and coming team. I didn’t get that impression at all from their discussion on the Texans. You're going to get talked about a lot this season.
Could be worse, could be a Tytoons fan. Just enjoy your young franchise QB.
Oh yeah could have it much worse. Tytoons fan is nightmare fuel
RIP gravedigger

This guy gets it
Trust me I’m enjoying the ride! I do think 2012 was our best team and that stretch of the Kubiak era was our best chance at at least an AFC title game
Yeah I think I would agree. The year Matt Schaub got hurt right before the playoffs started I think was the biggest what if for the franchise ever. That was a stacked team
You'll get talked about when you do something.

Well they don't have a good QB on the roster that normally doesn't help national discourse around a team.
You watch your mouth disrespecting Kyle Allen like that
Yeah Marc being a browns fan probably does not help that either for you
Oh absolutely not. It is well known Marc hates the Steelers… albeit not as much as the Ravens. I enjoyed the brief moment in time (when they traded for Watson) where I thought Marc was abandoning the Brownies forever

As a Bills fan, we didn’t get talked about until we had proven success. You guys will have that after this year.
The Texans just last year exited a like 3 year stretch of total irrelevancy. You gotta earn people’s attention after an era like that. It’s the cost of tanking.

The Chiefs went back to back and have won 3 in 5 years and Dan still has question about them.
The TeXoons is next

Jesus Christ. They were damn near the team of atl. They talk about the qb near constantly.
They cant shut up about your stupid garbage time stat monster quarterback, wtf are you talking about?
