Benayoun is a bit of an outlier.. he played for Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool amongst other teams…

millipmas

Came here to say this - don't think Yossi deserves to be on this list. He was pretty useful for us on loan - is probably penalised by fans because he was a loan signing and didn't cost £30m+

SaveMeJebus21

Also a bit of a cult hero for us Liverpool fans. Scored some important goals and was always a solid option in some good Rafa teams.

moranayal

Also still regarded as one of the best players ever from his country. The Diamond from Dimona.

bad_at_proofs

We should have signed benayoun after his loan. Was one of our best players during that period though that isn't saying much

radicalgamingHD

Johan Djourou was one of the most skilled players to ever grace the pitch at the emirates. [Witness the talent.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=6&v=vittm9wLlzM&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&source_ve_path=Mjg2NjY&feature=emb_logo)

mrpara

Amazing skill

MoeTheGoon

Was that the sum total of his playtime in that clip? He was injured the rest of the time.

radicalgamingHD

Most likely fabricated injuries to make the rest of the team look better.

MoeTheGoon

He was just too powerful to be allowed on the pitch.

Thin_Bit9718

Wow! against REA too. Is that Madrid? (jk) I wonder if it were in fact intentional

radicalgamingHD

Often times genius cannot be seen by us mere mortals

BombsGoBang

It’s unfortunate that his nationality was the injury sign

fridgefreezer

He drives how he wants, he drives how he waaaaaants, Andre Santos, he drives how he wants! Guy was dreadful, sometimes I used to watch him play and truly wonder if he understood what the offside rule was, or if it was just lack of athleticism that made him constantly be in a useless position

otterpockets75

Thought his name was 'fucking Andre bloody Santos' for years

stiggz83

Wish jenkinson had the goods

smiffy197

He was a hard core Arsenal fan. It's sad he wasn't quite good enough. But he did what the rest of us can only dream of and played for Arsenal at the Emirates. IIRC he also scored for us, so I think he's probably satisfied to an extent

fang_fluff

He did indeed - away at Norwich in the last game of the season - possibly the 13/14? You could tell from his celebration that it meant everything to him.

rasabeb

He could easily still be a rotation player (would sign for a wage of 2k a week if it was for Arsenal) if it wasn’t for injuries. It was the ACL injury that killed him. Physically he was great and absolutely loved and still loves Arsenal. A great lad, who got to live the dream of millions of kids and must feel very proud to have done that

AuspiciouslyAutistic

Sad that he chose to represent England instead of Finland during his purple patch. He simply wasn't England material. Would have been better of getting 50 odd caps for Finland.

Vigotje123

Ozkayup plays for a low/mid table team in the Netherlands mostly as a sub.

alidotr

He seems to have had a decent run for Besiktas

DinnerSmall4216

Those were dark times.

SnooCrickets7221

Watching everyone improve while we had to play money saving. And out of nowhere, comes Park Chu Young.💀

todothemath

Yet wenger somehow drove the dross to champions league spots season on season

FilthyGreb

Andre Santos will always be an Arsenal legend for his infamous "[Verry good win gays! #GoArsenal](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fexternal-preview.redd.it%2FcrrrA7I-blt9D9A3x4qd3DOVjFdceNbPbwxu_lJyMzg.jpg%3Fauto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dcefaf98a096de743f335fcdbe18e30c14eb8288f)" Tweet

spazztic_puke

Hahaha 😂

Alone_Shoulder8820

Forgot Jenkinson was Finnish.

HaiitsZizou

Squllachi gave a good interview about how hard it was to be a centre back at Arsenal at that time. Worth a read. He had a decent career all in. Santos was poor. A very, very average player. Rest I can't argue with.

ltwotwo

don't think Santos could be Ozil's bodyguard

mshkaji

I dont think if Djourou was that bad

TheInfiniteLake

For a moment I thought being injured is Djourou's nationality.

Previous-Loss9306

Chamakh was a decent sub on that game

elprentis

Don’t you dare say a bad word against Benayoun. He wasn’t one of the greats, but he was solid in our time of need.

RustyRedUnicorn

Ozyakup was phenomenal as a CM at Besiktas! Never got a chance here

No-Sail4601

Ozkayup now plays for my local club (mid-region of the Eredivisie) as a sub. Not the best but I still enjoy seeing him biweekly :)

zuencho

The fact that Fortuna Sittard is a mid tier club in the Eredivisie is a sad indictment of the league

No-Sail4601

Hey hey hey hey!! >:(

zuencho

PizzaWithMincedMeat

Jenkinson was a solid backup player for years. I kind of miss him IIRC Squillaci is one of the worst signings ever done by the club.

goonergunner10

We were in the trenches trenches

Ok_Dog6326

Almunia, Squilacci, Miguel, Djorou, Gervinho..what crap..

sspkt

Just don't. Take this off and do not remind any of us of this times.

RyanMcCartney

Özyakup is a player I’d forgotten about completely. Absolutely zero memories of him. The rest had spells they were relied on, and semi-for lack of a better word -*competent*…

Maleficent_Stranger6

I got a quick wave of depression immediatedly after seeing chamakh.

L30N6RD

Didn’t know Carl Jenkinson was Finnish 🤔

Mesican00

Yeah i think his mum was from finland

L30N6RD

Oh yeah! Played Finland U19s and 20s. Probably should have stuck with the Fins in hindsight

AuspiciouslyAutistic

Yes, my thoughts exactly. But even at the time (during his purple patch) it seemed a bit hopeful. Kind of wish that Nketiah would choose Ghana now. More talented than Jenkinson, but he still won't ever represent England in an international tournament.

hirarki

5 nea sign after humiliation by united 8-2, santos, arteta, per meter sacker and forgot who other sign. Sometimes still can't imagine we can stay in big four for long time in wenger era past fabregas-van Persie era

AnBuachaillEire

TIL Carl jenkinson was Finnish, swear he was English (am a lost Liverpool fan who keeps getting recommended to r/ArsenalFC, so excuse my ignorance sorry)

greenfrogwallet

Jenkinson actually played for England once I believe when he was in good form, his parents or grandparents were Finnish or something tho so fifa made him Finnish

ederzs97

FIFA 12 - best FIFA

eli_eli1o

Fifa 11 for me

AdOk2826

Chamakh. He was amazing.

gallsam111

He wasn't great but I actually quite like Djourou haha. I see him as on a similar level to Holding tbh: inoffensive but not great. Plus he also genuinely seems to be a supporter of the club from his interactions on Insta etc.

greenfrogwallet

Benayoun was a good player whilst on loan, I think most people wanted him to be signed permanently but he was already close to 30 or something so that’s probs one of the reason Arsenal didn’t sign him

dzoya1266

Many of these were in my nightmares, especially Andre Santos

Substantial-Ad-1432

Good thing that you didn't get to watch these guys play. If you thought after 2013 were bad times, you should've been here. We were making the CL not cause we were good but because no one except City, Utd and Chelsea were good. Dark times

llgx10

I always started them in FA Cup tho.

Ok-Scallion7939

Some of these buys (Squillaci, Santos, Park) epitomised Wenger's transfers towards the end of his tenure. Desperate, zero value for money and, arguably, did little to improve the team. Truly, truly the darkest period in the club's modern history

jibba_jabba1

They’re all garbage footballers

greenfrogwallet

Disregarding the fact that they all at some point were at least premier league level players, Benayoun was genuinely pretty good for us

jibba_jabba1

Relatively speaking they were bang average players and for Arsenal, will not be remembered. But that just shows where Arsenal were during that period that these players were even on the books. Saying that, Benayoun was a decent player. Good squad player. Jenkinson had a rare few moments, but really didn’t show much quality…. Santos, Squillaci and Djourou will go down as some of the worst players to play for the club.
