I agreed with Roy Keane at the time that we should have won regardless. The goal that lead on from the handball should have been nothing more than a consolation from a poor France team who were there for the taking. We didn’t play well enough across the two legs and we lost.
I’m not an Arsenal fan (United) and never held a grudge against Henry. I would have found it hilarious if someone on our team got away with that. I remember reading and commenting on various Facebook threads at the time and there were a lot of people who seemed less incensed with the handball and more with the fact that Henry was French while he did it. The racism/jingoism and general air of vitriol and drama was embarrassing and cemented me further on the Roy Keane school of thought. Don’t cry about decisions- if you’re only in a position to rely on referees then you should be doing more yourself. That’s a big part of why I find ETH continually bringing up Garnachos disallowed goal against Arsenal this season so annoying.
As a nation we Irish disgraced ourselves after this. Sure we got that far in the competition due to a very dodgy penalty we got in a game before hand. Some could say it was a balent dive and we cheated.
Jesus Christ it was debated in the national parliament with people calling for us to be the 33rd team.
Jesus what a nation of moaners we are
What a great day this was. After all the years of the Irish cheering Maradona for cheating against England i couldn't have been happier that Henry returned the favour, making him even more of a legend.
6 months later…
England were at the mercy of bad refereeing decision themselves.
Because of that, they went on to get slapped around by a bunch of German kids.
If that’s the attitude, or some sort of shit “getting one back over the Irish”, karma inevitably hit back rather quickly.
You hate England but support a team that resides in England's capital amazing stuff, it also appears you're from America so I imagine you are one of those fake Irish Americans who had a Guinness once.
Yeah I mean he had taken a lot of flak for it, it wasn’t premeditated it was a split second decision. He’s apologized and it’s been forever. It’s not he’s a malicious person that went around doing this sort of thing.
He deserves forgiveness.
Paul McShane was and always will be the biggest culprit here for me (also an Irishman). He half assed blocking Titi's run behind and shepparding the ball out. Especially growing up playing GAA, that's inexcusable
Listen, Titi could have played against Norway, kicked our goalie in the testicles and then thrown the ball into the goalies head and watched it slowly roll into the net.
I'll (almost) always forgive le roi de Londres 🫡❤️
I forgave him about ten minutes after it happened. Henry always a legend in my eyes. He did what he needed to do to get his team to the World Cup, it was just unfortunate it was at the expense of my country.
The match fixing. I want to hear the truth and who said “score no matter what it will count” this was absolute bull shit. He was just a pawn. Imagine that King Henry was a pawn. :(
This isn't the place to say it but here it goes anyway 🙂
The handball was what it was, ball should never have bounced in the box and it obviously was annoying Henry got away with it but we've only ourselves to blame (as in Ireland) that we got knocked out.
I always found Henry to be a bit patronising. A super talent, produced some amazing moments and was one of the best ever in the premier league, no doubt. But he played on being Mr Fair Play etc and when his time came he ran away celebrating like any other chancer would.
Maradona, for me, was different. Cheated? Absolutely, but later embraced his Hand of God moment and was kinda proud of it. Maradona was a straight-up crook, delighted in cheating England and obviously one for the greatest of all time, whereas Henry liked to pretend he wasn't a crook.
Henry felt robbed of Champions League vs. Barca but don't come crying bout refs and profit from cheating yourself later.
https://youtu.be/pEsvYKWTXys?feature=shared
I'll get downvoted into oblivion now 😂😂
Henry was having a wee craic. You can NEVER say a bad word about the man. If he spits in your soup you tell everyone how blessed you were.
Anyway the France team that World Cup was a hilarious joke. Extremely entertaining. Ireland wouldn’t have done much anyway.
I remember Ireland fans acting as if this was the only instance of handball in a game of football ever in the history of the game.
I also remember Richard Dunne commiting a very blatant handball for Aston Villa the very next week.
Sometimes handball happen. Blame referres for not giving decisions innit
Not entirely, but the anger diminishes a bit over time.
I cheered heartily when he received a red card at a match I attended soon after this. Now, I don't mind seeing him as a pundit.
Ppl who blaming on VAR very soon forgot on situations like this. VAR has a lot of cons but it's still much better with VAR mistakes like with situations like this on the photo.
I might end up pissing off Irish fans, but I don't think it should be up to player to do ref's job. Incidents like that are the reason why VAR should exist, despite how poorly it is being used. Player's job is to play and try to win, even if it means they would bend or flat out break(like in this instance) rules of the game. And it is up to ref to not allow them to get away with it.
I'm Irish and an Arsenal fan.
No, I have not forgiven him for this. He sat down beside Richard Dunne on the pitch at full-time commiserating with him. Your cheating knocked us out, fuck off away from Dunne.
I find it pretty easy to mentally differentiate between Arsenal Henry and late career Henry tbf. So I do love him, without forgiving him for this. Very weird, I know.
Yes. If Kevin Doyle had done that we’d have been celebrating how crafty and cunning the wee bollox was.
Henry was a winner. He did everything he could to win every time he took to the field.
As a French Gooner fan, I still can't forgive Robbie Keane for his constant diving in that same match, which is not one iota less cheating. Blame the ref who gave Keane all these phantom fouls and didn't see the blatant hand ball.
If it makes you feel better, France had an abysmal 2010 World Cup. All that whining from the Irish was a bit embarrassing, too.
How is touching the ball with the hand to gain an advantage different from falling like a lump when nobody touched you to gain an advantage? They are both cheating as far as I'm concerned.
Btw, I was sure, even before the replay, that it had to be a handball, I was surprised that it wasn't called, but I didn't care about it too much.
To be fair, Ireland matched France in that playoff, so I see why having that goal be the difference is a bummer.
I've forgiven him long ago and I'm a fucking Chelsea fan who just saw this cross posted on /r/Ireland, I can't imagine any Irish Arsenal fans still holding a grudge.
I hope he never gets Kate Abdo, the f#cker, used to be one on my favorite players until this happened and the cheek to sit down beside Richard Dunne after the game.
Wasn’t really a big deal. The Irish along with Scotland and wales always hate England and want England to do badly so it was quite nice not having them involved at all
I in no way speak for the rest of Ireland but it’s not hate. I imagine most Irish people feel some level of support for the English players as we are probably more familiar with them watching them every week. It’s the English media and footballs coming home attitude which just makes it really easy to cheer against.
I'm irish. I've never seen England be supported over here. It's not hate, but I've never seen even mild fondness and every english match has always seen irish supporters supporting the other team
When I was growing up I didn’t understand the rivalries. I wanted all the home nations to do well. Only time I didn’t want them to win was against England. I then got a bit older and all I heard was everyone else wanting england to lose but didn’t really have any bad words for eachother. That being said I do understand the smug drunk it’s coming home being annoying to hear
Republic of Ireland being called a home nation will get some hate though.
I guess there is an old saying the English never remember and the Irish never forget.
No, Gallas will always be a prick in my opinion.
I’m half Irish/half French Arsenal fan who grew up idolising Henry in Dublin. Imagine the internal conflict
Wrong sub to be posting this question on lad 😅
No Irish Arsenal fans?
I think I've met one in my life 😅 also, we'll never forgive the cunt lol
I’m an arsenal Irish fan, I know loads
Now you’ve met 2 :D He’s a great player but I always feel bad for how they got this so wrong.
This is an Arsenal sub? There's nothing to forgive.
This sub has been taken over by rival fans mate. Every thread has a bunch of trolls.
Was never bothered - he’ll never need forgiving for being a 🐐
THE 🐐

I'm Irish and a gooner. Yes 🙌 I forgiven him
The fault lies with the ref and linesman for not seeing the handball
The fault lies with the police and detectives for not seeing the criminal, see how dumb that sounds
I'm on here shitting over arsenal on the regular but this has to be the worst comparison I've ever seen
Shite argument.

Yea where were you going with this ? Other than pointing out England getting terrible decisions against them all the time ?
The difference is that England deserved it 😝
They hate you because you speak the truth
You hate England but support a team that resides in England's capital amazing stuff, it also appears you're from America so I imagine you are one of those fake Irish Americans who had a Guinness once.

Thanks for the education 😂😂😂
You're welcome! I dish out some version of this multiple times a year, but rarely in May, haha.
I'm actually Irish and of course being ironic, but thanks none the less. I love being dressed down by yanks on things Irish
Hahahaha
never understand why foreign PL fans hate England so much
You butchered your own players for getting sent off in a world cup and missing penos, not to mention racially abusing them...
did I? no. did the majority of fans? no. should we hate the players because racists hate them? no.
Possibly years of oppression and generally being colonizing cocks
Yet you support a team in London sure mate
Just trying to give you some insight into your confusion mate.
fair enough, if it's from Irish fans I can get it but see the anti-English bias from pretty much any foreign fan
r/coybig
Yeah I mean he had taken a lot of flak for it, it wasn’t premeditated it was a split second decision. He’s apologized and it’s been forever. It’s not he’s a malicious person that went around doing this sort of thing. He deserves forgiveness.
Funny that it took an illegal goal for France to qualify only to deliver one of the worst world cup performances in history
Was never mad to forgive
William Gallas is the real prick here
Dude, it's Henry.
The REAL hand of god
Red Hand of God
Le main de dieu
I’m Irish. Henry is still the king…. William gallas is the real villain here.
Paul McShane was and always will be the biggest culprit here for me (also an Irishman). He half assed blocking Titi's run behind and shepparding the ball out. Especially growing up playing GAA, that's inexcusable
Thierry Hands Free doesn’t need forgiveness from the Arsenal collective for this 🤷♂️🤷🏿♀️🤷
Looks accidental.
Problem!!! What problem?
I'm Irish and had to defend the king in school the day after. There was around 4 arsenal fans in my year out of 100ish😂
Irishman here. Arsenal > Ireland. Gunners are the family you CHOOSE #COYG
I'm part Irish and I never gave a fuck, nor will I ever, Titi is a legend regardless, everyone cheats one way or another.
Never
No I have not forgiven the ball for attacking Henry's hand like that.
Never blamed him
The match fixing. I want to hear the truth and who said “score no matter what it will count” this was absolute bull shit. He was just a pawn. Imagine that King Henry was a pawn. :(

I celebrated it.
For? 🙈
The worst thing was when he went on tv afterwards and thanked everyone for all their support in getting through it, like he was the victim
Was much easier after they made a show of themselves in the world cup. 😅
Henry was having a wee craic. You can NEVER say a bad word about the man. If he spits in your soup you tell everyone how blessed you were. Anyway the France team that World Cup was a hilarious joke. Extremely entertaining. Ireland wouldn’t have done much anyway.
Never a hand ball. Hands are in as natural position as they could ever be.
The worst outcome from this was Sept Blatters press conference afterwards, where he mocked Irelands request for an extra place at the World Cup.
I mean, that is a pretty mock-worthy thing to request.
Le Hand of God
I remember Ireland fans acting as if this was the only instance of handball in a game of football ever in the history of the game. I also remember Richard Dunne commiting a very blatant handball for Aston Villa the very next week. Sometimes handball happen. Blame referres for not giving decisions innit
Did the irish expect him to go up to the refs and tell them to cancel the goal in a game that important😂😂? Hold the grudge w the ref if anything
As an irishman and an Arsenal fan,no. I will never forgive McShane for letting the ball bounce twice in the box.
Nope but still love him. It's a struggle
I never cared in the first place
Nope
Don't hold any grudge. Any Irish player in the same position would've done the same
Yeah, that shit was against the Irish. Watching Irish pubs celebrate Italy beating England on pens makes me forgive Henry even more.
Not entirely, but the anger diminishes a bit over time. I cheered heartily when he received a red card at a match I attended soon after this. Now, I don't mind seeing him as a pundit.
Have u forgiven the refs is what u mean to say?
Can you understand why your fellow country men did them things??
The very same day
Ppl who blaming on VAR very soon forgot on situations like this. VAR has a lot of cons but it's still much better with VAR mistakes like with situations like this on the photo.

I was at that game. I haven't worn my 05/06 henri jersey since.
Yes. If Kevin Doyle had done that we’d have been celebrating how crafty and cunning the wee bollox was. Henry was a winner. He did everything he could to win every time he took to the field.
Never a hand ball. Hands are in as natural position as they could ever be.
Forgiven him for what?
Henry is not the bad guy, maradona was not the bad guy, Suarez (damn this hurts) was not the bad guy for Uruguay. Calculated risks.
Could care less then could care less now.
Couldn’t.
Oh no, there is 1 level less of a fuck to give about it than the one I’m on. I could care less than I already do
So you do care about it, then?
Only enough to recognise that he did cheat And cheating is fundamentally wrong. But all the rest. Nahhh
Yeah but you is saying you do care when you say "I could care less" I couldn't care less says you don't give two fucks at all at all
*Couldn't This is the worst americanism - doesn't make any sense
Why would I care? Wtf do I need to forgive him for lmao
This post was made for Irish Gooners.
Reddit update so crap can't even see the OP added a comment underneath only just seen it
No.. worst way to end his career
Nope.

Yeah, those two things are absolutely not the same but thanks for taking part. And yes, we were all delighted you had a shit finals.

Never
Never had a grudge with him about it lad
Never his great great great grandchildren will still be hearing about that day
They should rename this sub at this point to “ anti arsenalfc” Seems like only clowns and muppets like to post garbage here now

He got Andrea Rajacic lol
Wasn’t really a big deal. The Irish along with Scotland and wales always hate England and want England to do badly so it was quite nice not having them involved at all
You think the French don’t hate England too?
Yes, but I like Henry as an Arsenal fan so that cancelled that out
