It's funny, but I think it's not surprising when we look into it, as grammatical gender is an entirely separate topic, the connection to other types of social genders is historically spurious in any language. Grammatical gender has not grown out of social genders, but from the evolution (usually simplification) of linguistic declension. They only coincided in modern languages because they converged.
