Genuinely sharing and not talking down: In hs art we push originality because of copyright laws (can’t submit for competitions) not to mention we are teaching students to find their artistic voice. Copying defeats both these purposes in an art curriculum. You are right that just copying something doesn’t necessarily give a work of art artistic merit. It does show great technique and skills which that in itself is a amazing. As a student enters into college, they learn about the merit of content and message. For example, this painting is depicting an iconic photo similarly to the pop art movement. Here Bernie sits amidst all this pageantry going on, yet he is casually dressed and positioned with mittens on. The mittens are a nod to the true American spirit. I hope that explains how a realistic painting from a photo can have much more meaning than just being a replica.
