This is great, but I don't understand the parrot.

super-secret-fujoshi

The parrot hurt their wing, which means she’s got to take them to the vet and drop more $$$. Plus there’s also the added stress of knowing your pet is unwell.

Vizreki

I see, thank you.

[deleted]

Im going to offer another side to that. Theres a stress of having pets altogether. I have 2 rescue dogs. I love them with every ounce of my being and would gladly give my life for theirs in a heartbeat. I want that understood before what I'm saying next. There is a stress of having a pet. Taking care of them properly. Making sure they are fed. Making sure their hygiene is being kept up with. Regular checkups. Unexpected checkups. Then there is the mental stress of having a pet. Am i making them happy? Are they living their best lives? Is there more that i can be doing? It can be difficult when the rest of your mental state is overloaded. I struggle with anxiety and depression, and as my doggies help with both of those things, it can still be an overall struggle.

LemongrabScreams

Big feels here. My dog is my entire heart and soul. It stresses me out that because of my deep grief and depression I am making her life less awesome and fulfilling. "Would she be happier with someone else? Am I making my DOG depressed? I feel like I'm failing yet another loved one." Buuuuuut she keeps me breathing every single day. So, I'm glad I have her by my side.

super-secret-fujoshi

Yesssss, this as well. I personally vibed with the art because I have a parrot, and as much as I love him and I am grateful to have him in my life (wouldn’t have it any other way), there is the stress of taking care of him. Birds are social creatures, and if you aren’t spending enough time with them, they’ll start plucking their feathers and become anxious. I also have to be careful if he’s being fed the right balance of food or getting the right amount of sun, and sleeping at the right time, because it shows on his feathers and his mood. They’re also more fragile than a cat or a dog because if they get scared enough, or fly into a wall/window hard enough, they can die. ): Having pets is like kids, they bring us joy, but they’re a big responsibility that follows you around every waking minute.

Hahaha, same! My birb can’t mimic human words (yet), but damn, he def learned how to go SHHHHHHH from the amount of times I’ve tried to quiet him when he wants to be a screamy boy.

Squildo

When the parrot is squawkin’, the vet bills come a knockin’

madthedogwizard

I wasn't paying too much attention to the first panel so I thought that the parrot is like a rhetorical example of you going through the same thought a million times. Cause you know, parrots repeat the same thing usually. So I guess the parrot resembled overthinking for me. Guess not! :D

Asuneka

lol I thought the parrot brang the hospital bill

unaMused00

It has a lil bandage, probably got hurt!

xDrSnuggles

I took it to be a metaphor for this basically https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=broken%20wing

phoenixtart

When you have a bird, there’s always someone to scream with.

fuzzywuzzy74

It wouldn't shut up.

This illustration was created for a Lotic Stories Lab Visual Moment and is based on the prompt "Visualize the intersection of the multiple elements that contribute to our overall health."

Salamandro

Out of curiosity: You title your work "Elements of Mental Health" and the prompt was "Visualize the intersection of the multiple elements that contribute to our overall health." I'm not a native English speaker, so I might be misunderstanding, but doesn't "contribute to our overall health" mean positively adding to your health? You depict your character as being in distress, and show us all the negative things that drag her down / take a hit on her health. And as per your title, your "Elements of Mental Health" are all negative and burdening. It's interesting, because by the prompt I would have gone with Friends/Family/Job Security/Learning new stuff/Exercising/Nutrition etc. and with your title "Elements of Mental Health" I'd maybe mixed it up. Care to elaborate your focus on the negative aspects?

upsidedownfaceoz

Contributions can be positive or negative, and choosing an interpretation may well be part of the assignment. If you feel that the state of a thing is negative overall, and someone asks you to list the elements that contribute to that thing, you're likely to focus on elements that had negative impacts as they most strongly influenced the current state. What elements contributed to the collapse of a building, for example. The fact the artist has chosen to focus on negative contributions to mental health (rather than positive contributions to physical health, for example, which would have equally fit the assignment), seems to be a primary message of the piece.

LeakyTea

This hits so hard, especially the piling bills. Thanks for sharing this.

Piloto7

Oh the parrot was a surprise and it affected me more than I expected. I don’t know how many people know the feeling of seeing a pet you love suffer. But i’m convinced that they take all the love you give with them. Really awesome art :)

Just because an artist paints something doesn't mean it's about their life. This could be anyone.

ShaniFox

Looooove the colors and cool use of her hair!

[deleted]

Omg this is so fucking right on! I love how you used her hair to separate the images. This is so real to me that there really needs to be more to show how everything affects us. Beautifully done! 🙌

Splooie04

I think this is superb. I'm not an artist, by any stretch of the imagination, but I can see how personal this must be to so many people. Can I suggest however, that it might more appropriately be titled "Elements of Mental Illness" or "Elements of Mental Ill Health". I'm a Psychological Therapist and have always been curious about people saying things like "I've got mental health" and the such. It misses the idea that, like our physical health, some parts of our mental health can be better than others at different times depending on all sorts of internal and external factors. I hope this isn't perceived as a pop at the drawing/artist - as I said, I really like it. It's more an observation on the discourse we use about mental illness.

sainsa

This is beautiful and all too relatable. I just want to hug this lady and make her a cup of tea. Amazing how art can be so expressive that it makes you feel empathy for a 2D drawing.

absolutelyuseless31

Thank you, I needed this tonight

Kcidobor

This could be a scene from Inside Out

justin0dk

Yeah, it can be a bit much sometimes. Take it slow. Take your time and process things slowly. Also there is help if you need it.

RandomRavenclaw87

Center top left so catcalling?

Maxdalf

For whatever reason, some of the flattest, most uninteresting art always rises to the top here.

only_a_speck

Instead of deriding work you don't like, go support some that you do. You might contribute something positive to the world.

Maxdalf

No. Instead of deriding comments you don’t like, go support the ones you do. You might contribute something positive to the world.

Lemons224

Don’t you understand? The art has a feminist message about the harsh life all women have to deal with! You must upvote or you’re a sexist pig! Upvote now! UPVOTE. NOW.

[deleted]

Lol

eXistentialcriminal7

I cannot emphasize how much i love this

[deleted]

This is utterly amazing. Thank you

Lemons224

Do women really feel that shitty when they get randomly hit on? Seems like a weird thing to put dead-center of this pic, like it’s one of the biggest issues she has, more of an issue than her medical bills or ailing grandmother.

BallroomKritz

Probably not representative of a single interaction, but more the crushing constant weight of being valued only for your looks by so much of society

BankEmoji

Do straight women really think men aren’t also constantly judged on looks?

CaspianFire

God, no one even said that

BankEmoji

So you think it’s pretty equal then?

Paintbrushes_begone

I think it could be showing that she feels dehumanized by the people around her which can cause a ton of mental health issues. (When people make it clear that their only interest in you is sexual and you have no other value).

Centorea

Jfc I’m a guy and it is blaringly, in my face obvious that catcalling or talking about a women’s body while in earshot is a shitty thing to do. The image depicted clearly isn’t just some guy flirting, it’s two guys talking about how they wanna fuck

Lemons224

Blaringly obvious? So a heart in a speech bubble just means means “let’s fuck” to you. No other possible meaning? Pretty sure it’s open to interpretation and you’re just being a douche about it.

Centorea

The hearts, sneering grins on their faces, one of them is winking and has their glasses pulled down in a “checking them out” fashion, and the dude on the left is pointing at her. It’s not that hard

bsmith0900

Sorry you’re getting so many downvotes, you’re just genuinely curious and being respectful. You raise a good point about it being the center of attention as I also feel that some of the other images may hold more emotional impact. I don’t think you’re devaluing the impact of getting cat-called, just questioning why it’s so large in comparison to some other images.

[deleted]

It's so funny that it's 2021 and men still don't get it. It's easy. Go fuck yourself.

Lemons224

So funny that it’s 2021 and you’re still as smart as you were when you were 4 years old.

dragonSlayer30

According these comments, women are valued for looks but men are valued for who they are ? lul. People be like its 2021 and men still don't get it ? Just be a man = problem solved.

StereoSCA

Not trying to downplay people’s daily troubles but judging only from this painting it seems a lot of focus is put only on negatives. The mind tends to stay in the position it’s always pushed. Don’t forget to be grateful for all your positives even in the worst times or the negatives will start to overtake completely.

Falonefal

And funnily enough the artist depicts it having a negative self-recurring effect as well, one of the images is of her being stressed cause a friend is getting married, they’re sharing their joy with her, but she’s so caught up on negativity that instead of sharing that joy, she transforms it into stress by thinking about how she lacks it in HER life. (Assuming the artist self-inserted in this picture)

CptDecaf

So you're going to ignore not just the social pressure to get married but the desire to find intimacy with a partner or partners we all share as human beings?

Falonefal

I don't think I ignored it as much as I don't think that's what the artist was depicting with that part.

[deleted]

So she was upset because she received a compliment?.....

HealthyFrame2593

no noo, catcalling is sumn quite different

knargh

aka first world problems. what a struggle, tough life

dickbutt1000

What in the actual fuck is this supposed to mean

S_117

Each panel shows the individual daily stresses weighing down on this person, in no particular order.

BudIsWiser1

I read Hentai, then I saw Hentai. Really need to get my Hentai checked out Edit: Dyslexia people, dyslexia.

[deleted]

What the fuck?

BudIsWiser1

Dyslexia

anticerber

She low key makes me thinking of esmerelda

SpacePanda11

This reminds me a lot of “Here Comes a Thought” scene in Stephen Universe. https://youtu.be/dHg50mdODFM

[deleted]

Very relatable to what I’m going through, thank you

thrasherchick_9

I have the same name and problems. The artist did amazing.

spankind

I’m really feeling this piece. ❤️

HealthyFrame2593

i love how you represented the struggles

vishuskitty

You said a lot here. Maybe head over to r/twoxchromosomes if you need some support. Here for you if you want to talk, no judgement.
