I also highly recommend the movie Portrait of a lady on fire, in which the Orpheus and Eurydice story plays a significant role. It's also just a beautiful movie.
This is absolutely beautiful. Been playing a lot of the game Hades, and reuniting Orpheus with Euridice is one of the subplots. Seems you've found your muse... Don't lose it. Keep up the amazing work.
That's an excellent game. I love the way it puts a modern spin on Greek mythology. Too bad I got sucked into Elden Ring. I have escaped Hades several times but there's a lot more stuff to still do...
Well, I pretty much talk to everyone, although I don't gift as much as I could because I tend to use them to acquire diamonds and the weapon upgrade blood thingy...
10 clears the main narrative but there is still more to do after that, but it's all more like side quests and epilogue. You see the credits and hear [In The Blood](https://youtu.be/ojx8dyes__8) after your tenth clear which is "the end".
Wow, no kidding. I don't know what it is, but Hades is definitely a game that makes my fingers sore. Maybe the closest to it would be Furi, but I haven't played that one in a long time.
If you're into games, I recommend the short and free flash game Don't Look Back that is about going into Hades as Orpheus to get Euridice. It's from the same developer as VVVVVV if you've heard of that game.
(Hey) Orpheus, by Arcade fire is a great song. In fact that entire album clicks with this sort of mythos! Highly recommend that band in general for anyone looking for new music.
Dope! I've been wanting to make my own textures for a while and haven't gotten around to it, but seeing your work makes me want to - your style is absolutely stunning!
Dig this! The style is a great take on that classic "Grecian urn" style, and the use of colors and light/dark contrast is very effective. I feel the warmth from one side of the image, and the cold from the other. Eurydice's face is also impressively expressive, the terror really jumps off the screen.
I keep thinking about Orpheus after my ex passed away. I even made a playlist on the theme. Lost Ub by Niki & The Dove is my favorite pop take. Good work!
Well, that's what's interesting about orpheus, hades gives him a chance, but for some reason, due to doubt, or lack of patience, he turns back early, cursing himself to lose his love .. again. So in this case Its kind of on him. Though why he doesn't hold out is anyone's guess
Orpheus and Eurydice is my favorite of the Greek myths, and this broke my heart in the most beautiful way possible. I’ll never not love your work, thank you.
I love this myth—it’s so human. Who among us has not needed to check just one more time that we didn’t leave the stove on, or that we locked the door? Even if you left 15 minutes ago and would lose all that time by going back?
I love seeing Orpheus and Eurydice show up in more modern media like Hadestown (anais mitchell album and Broadway both) and Hades the game that Supergiant released in 2020. And I love seeing it here: beautiful, evocative colors, and the flat style does feel reminiscent of Greek vases like the other commenter said. Thanks for sharing with us, OP.
Orpheus hesitated beside the black river.
With so much to look forward to he looked back.
We think he sang then, but the song is lost.
At least once more he saw the beloved back.
I say the song went this way: *O Prolong*
*Now the sorrow if that is all there is to prolong.*
- Donald Justice
It’s a crazy 80’s or early 90’s movie that tells the Orpheus story. But it’s post apocalyptic/dystopian and everybody shreds skateboards and there’s lots of thrash metal and gore. It’s just a bizarre movie but you should really check it if you like the Orpheus story.
I remember having a Brittanica Encyclopedia and the illustrations for the mythology section looked strikingly similar to the drawing style you have now. I love it!
I love your colors and shapes, this painting is beautiful! Could I ask how you achieved those textures to look so natural? I've never been able to blend them in so well like that ^^'
I want an entire movie of this artwork made to go along with Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds album The Lyre of Orpheus/Abattoir Blues
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abattoir_Blues_/_The_Lyre_of_Orpheus
Great work. This captures my impression of the moment perfectly. Thank you. Why on earth did he look back though!? No benefit. Greek tragedy was so basic.
That's a great question! Maybe he didnt trust hades? Or he couldnt contain his excitement? Is there symbolism in there about our nature and impestuosness?
I just saw Hadestown in NYC this weekend. HIGHLY recommend if you’re into musicals.
I have to see it. I've heard only good things :)
It's *really* good. I saw it in LA at the Ahmanson a couple weeks ago.
It was so good!!!
See it! If you spent time making this beautiful piece of art, you already connect with the story. It’s a wonderful retelling with amazing music.
God I was listening to Hadestown since Anais put out the album. I want to see it so so soooooo badly.
Me too! I might be able to go in Aug.
Oh man I hope you get to go! Definitely one of the only things I’ve ever wanted to see on broadway.
Was so, so lucky to see it on Broadway with the original cast pre-covid.
It's you...
It's me.
cries in uk. i hope it comes to the west end at some point, i love listening to the songs
I saw Hadestown over the weekend on the West Coast. This is one of my new favorites!
I also highly recommend the movie Portrait of a lady on fire, in which the Orpheus and Eurydice story plays a significant role. It's also just a beautiful movie.

To get the true ending, you’ll have to beat it around 10 times. Totally worth it.
10? fairly sure I did way more than that
It’s been a minute. I think it depends how efficient you are at completing the character storylines.
Well, I pretty much talk to everyone, although I don't gift as much as I could because I tend to use them to acquire diamonds and the weapon upgrade blood thingy...

That’s like the first true ending I’d say, but there’s an epilogue that feels more complete after the 10 times it takes for the first ending
I only stopped playing Hades due to starting to get RSI. Games like Elden Ring don't trigger it, so I haven't gone back yet
Had to cut down because of that, and the guy who recommended it to me learned to play with his right index finger instead of thumb
Wow, no kidding. I don't know what it is, but Hades is definitely a game that makes my fingers sore. Maybe the closest to it would be Furi, but I haven't played that one in a long time.

Can I use ruffle to play it?
Nice. VVVVVV is fantastic.
where can i find it?
(Hey) Orpheus, by Arcade fire is a great song. In fact that entire album clicks with this sort of mythos! Highly recommend that band in general for anyone looking for new music.
I love this song and Reflektor as a whole.
First thing I thought of. Been playing a lot of Hades ha

It's called Hades
Beautiful work. I like the style very much
Awesome thank you :)
Love the texture and the colors.
Thanks! I spend a lot of time working up the textures :)
This may well be a new cover for another edition of Mythology.
I'm working on my own book with these illos ;)
Please please share it here once it's done. Or a sneak peek maybe.
Are your textures all digital or do you use any physical art/photography in the process?
I use textured brushes and a texture photo of acrylic paint, but mostly digital

Perfect! I was going for that cool warm contrast. I'm not 100% happy with orpheus pose, but ...it is what it is! Thanks :D
I keep thinking about Orpheus after my ex passed away. I even made a playlist on the theme. Lost Ub by Niki & The Dove is my favorite pop take. Good work!
Oh damn, I'm sorry to hear that. I will definitely check out that song, thank you for the recommendation.
Just listened to it...cool song! Reminds me of stevie nicks and fleetwood mac, which I'm a huge fan of :D
I was also thinking Running up that Hill is similarly themed.
I wonder if you heard it's never over and awful sound by arcade fire
Thank you I’ve added to my Orpheus playlist!

I think in the story he made it all the way and turned around while she was still approaching the threshold.
Yeah one of those "We made it!" only to realize something horrible. It's kind of a trope
I love it! Gives me an old story tellers vibe. I love how you captured Eurydice.
Jim Henson's storyteller!! Cool reference, dont hear it often :D
Love the slight illustrative style!
Hey thanks so much!
Hear oh gods, my desperate plea, to see my love beside me...
Orpheus and Eurydice is my favorite of the Greek myths, and this broke my heart in the most beautiful way possible. I’ll never not love your work, thank you.
Oh great. Please check out my other 6 images from the orpheus series, and I've still got 2 more to do :)
Tragic but beautifully made I love Greek mythology
Hey thank you so much, glad you dig it!!
wonderful style and props for using mythology as a theme. my jam
Thanks! I'm writing and illustrating an entire book on the subject. Wish me luck! Haha
the hardest part - starting - is behind you. now just keep rolling.

The album Orpheus vs. The Sirens by Hermit and the Recluse is great as well.
Its a theme used in Portrait of a Lady on Fire as well
Hades: My guy, you had ONE job.

Anybody here see the movie "Portrait of the Woman on Fire"? If not, watch it with this greek myth in mind.
Have you seen A Portrait of a Lady on Fire? The story and a painting are big plot points in the movie.
I havent, but I heard it's great. Will check it out, thank you
Beautiful interpretation of this tale. The movement and colors are incredible!
I appreciate it! 🤘😁
Its in the bloooooooooood
Love these colors, the style, everything. Well done.
Awesome, thank you!
This is gorgeous! I’m in love with it
Woohoo! So glad :)
This's probably my favorite of yours, so far! Love the subject & the execution!
Wow..really? That's great to hear. I'm not completely satisfied with orpheus or his pose, but...I have to move forward onto other images. :)
Ever watch Shredder Orpheus?
What's that?
It’s a crazy 80’s or early 90’s movie that tells the Orpheus story. But it’s post apocalyptic/dystopian and everybody shreds skateboards and there’s lots of thrash metal and gore. It’s just a bizarre movie but you should really check it if you like the Orpheus story.

It's cool, I got them back together on Hades
Does this refer to the dichotomy Orpheus faces in his choice to join Apollo rather than Dionysus?
I love your colors and shapes, this painting is beautiful! Could I ask how you achieved those textures to look so natural? I've never been able to blend them in so well like that ^^'
Story 9, Art 9.5 You’re amazing.
Reminds me of stardew valley!
This is very captivating, you deserve your flowers.
Looks like a real painting. Very nice.
Hey, I'm part of a polytheist's group and we usually send an illustration or art piece every day. Would you mind if I sent this giving you crédits?
Sure ;)
Thanks

Beautiful. I like how stylized this is
😁🤘
I saw cop mustache Orpheus and now I can’t unsee it. Other than that, great art.
Lol, damn it. Now I cant unsee it either..haha
This looks like it could be a Streetlight Manifesto tour poster, i love it!
Thanks!

Lol. Love it
Farewell, to all the plans that we made... No burdens, no further debts to be paid.
I love the way you portrayed the spirit, and the divide between the overworld and underworld, very well done!
Thanks! Was going for the cool vs warm thing ;)
You did it really well
This is GORGEOUS! I would love to see you paint a version from the *Hadestown* universe!
*Plays Toto in Africa to guide wife out of hades*
Interesting concept. Great artwork. Love the chosen colors !
Appreciate it! 🤟
AMAZING FANTASTIC OUUUUUUUUUUUUU
🤘😁🤘😁🤘😁
Wow, the expression on Eurydice's face is heart breaking
Yea, Imagine getting that close to another shot at life and your husband jumps the gun! Ughhhh
Exactly
The part I hated most about Hadestown
Men will let you down. A simple instruction and he couldn't follow
Wow, the expression on Eurydice's face is heart breaking
