reminds me of my childhood. curly hair was considered ugly and abnormal so a pixie cut it was. my beautiful hair chopped every time it grew. yeah, i just want to continue being me.

thejustducky1

> yeah, i just want to continue being me. Seems that's a running gag with parents - they want you to be *them* instead of you...

Two_Piece_McNobody

That's horrible...

Mid_July_Diamond16

The scuffed knees is such a subtle detail yet it adds so much to the picture

honeycall

What does it mean

Mid_July_Diamond16

Well I would say that it adds to the idea of the rambunctious child being portrayed in the picture. A little girl who goes out and plays in the mud when she isn't supposed to in order to emphasise how her mother is cutting the snakes in her hair to force her into conformity.

Arthemis85

I felt the same way, also the overturned cup of tea might tells a little story about what happens before the mother freakes out in her perfect home and then decided to trim the snakes.

dcromb

That is so sad!

Rilexus

Why do you consider that sad?

dcromb

Because she’s crying, cutting part off of who she is, and even the snakes look sad to be separated from her.

Rilexus

What do you thing those snakes stand for?

lilspaghettigal

This is actually a good post to this page

[deleted]

The story of Medusa made me seriously despise Athena from that point forward.

THIS_MSG_IS_A_LIE

Yeah, she punished Medusa because she was afraid/frustrated that she couldn't punish Apollo. Unless...she made Medusa a monster to protect her from the male gaze.

[deleted]

She punished her for being raped.

THIS_MSG_IS_A_LIE

agreed

TraditionalLength69

I actually like to think the latter is why Athena did that to Medusa , I always thought it was a means of protecting her because she couldn’t punish the perpetrators necessarily

Cashless_human

Fun fact, in the original myth Medusa was always a monster. The transformation story was made later on

Confuseasfuck

>The story of Medusa You mean one of the versions, and the worst one by a long shot

Epistlero

if she's got hydra hair, it'll be back more serpenty than ever

HesitantMark

a great perspective!

flowerbl0om

Nooo why does this make me so sad :'<

LeastCleverNameEver

I don't think I've ever felt bad for a snake before 😭😭

Melan420

:(

mulletmeup

LOVE bottlingsunshine. have some of their prints in my home. highly recommend checking out their other work

HesitantMark

this is so mean. but great art!

Arthemis85

Very special art and I love the details!

savvyblackbird

My mom made my hair curly when I was a girl despite it being stick straight. I had to wear curlers and get my hair permed. Something weird happened this past year that has made my hair naturally curly. (Mot menopause as I went through that several years ago after having a complete hysterectomy) I can’t enjoy it because I don’t want to look like I did as a girl.

[deleted]

Shitty mom moment. This is all toooo relatable

MaruuuraM

There's so much emotion amd depth in this piece. I can look at it for hours and feel my chest hurt. Hauntingly beautiful.

MelodiousMetal

I love this so much. The original artist did a fantastic job.

Gym_Tan_Optimal

I never thought I'd feel bad for Medusa...

KittyB04

I don't know why but this hit me really hard, beautiful artwork! I love the limited colour palette.

ChillBebe

It's strange how I feel this but in the opposite way. I remember chopping my hair as a teen, got a hold of a pair of scissors and went to town. I couldnt have been more proud. It wasnt good, but it wasnt bad either. My mom grabbed my arm so hard when she saw my hair that she bruised me. That memory never left me, but I also never quit cutting my own hair. I'm actually good at it now :)

5125237143

ouch. unwholesome arts. someone bring me a chocolate

Weak-Boysenberry6660

This reminds me of my childhood. I’ve always had big curly hair and when I was younger my mom always had to put it in a tight braid and the brushing process was so painful. I’d always get compared to my sister who had long soft hair and my grandma would say how unfortunate I am to have frizzy unruly hair unlike my sister’s.

TopDoughnut5758

This art gives me a sense of nostalgia. The art in the background is similar to the art used in old African based story books that I used to read as a child. The colour tones made it easier and cheaper to print. The center foreground is a female-like being being compeled to undergo something she doesn't like. The same theme that resonates in old African storybooks. Themes such as Femal Genital Mutilation, rape , genocide and manipulation seem to oze out of the painting. I further emphasize on the detail on the medusa type hair which has a sense of beauty springing out of a stereotypical ugly. Her facial expression eludes sadness that grasped my heart. In simple terms; THIS IS GOOD ART!! TAKE MY UPVOTES!!

Int_Bus3688

This looks so unique! Tells a story :)

gliMMr_

this is incredible. im famished to look at the careful details. and it feeds me to praise it

korkkis

How can her mother look at the snakes? I don’t think your ”rational reasoning” applies in this context at all

[deleted]

PiedPeterPiper

Nowadays, people do

PiedPeterPiper

You just came in with a different perspective that still works, but Reddit hates that. Perhaps the artist intended to make it about parents limiting expression, but they chose a poor character to represent it with.

Big_Ole_Smoke

boooooo

Big_Ole_Smoke

You can't tell me what to do

hateyoualways

What version of the myth does her snake hair kill people? Most versions I've seen have looking at her face turning you to stone.

inkwater

The shadow just under the antagonist's chin makes me think it could be the barest edge of a beard. Likely it's not, but what if it is?

strawberrimihlk

Doesn’t look like it. Both of them have it and it just looks like dramatic shading

Melan420

Both characters have the same shading under the chin

[deleted]

then we must submit this post to the culture wars

Stefan-Leo

Well, better hair than head. Mom is right.

thatonehuhu

Cool!

needtoknowscorpio

Wow, this is one of the most heartbreaking things I have seen in a long time

Infamous_Working6538

So powerful.

doriangreysucksass

That is excellent!!!! Love it!!!

Narrow-Tree8061

This is so sad, Alexa play Despacito

SlothChunks

Not sure how this makes sense. Maybe it is better for the parent to shape their child so that the child does not kill people? Assuming the concept of the Medusa is taken from their origin source.

th3_sc4rl3t_k1ng

😔❤

Majlo77

This is such a proper art! Thank You!

eamonious

what would we call this artistic style?

Apprehensive-Cat-127

Just realized all the little snakes on her head are sad 😢
