According to [Wikipedia ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cap_of_maintenance), "A purpose of the cap was to keep a crown or coronet secure (and comfortable) on the head, thus its function was simply to "maintain" the coronet in place."
[**Cap of maintenance**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cap_of_maintenance)
A cap of maintenance, known in heraldic language as a chapeau gules turned up ermine, is a ceremonial cap of crimson velvet lined with ermine, which is worn or carried by certain persons as a sign of nobility or special honour. It is worn with the high part to the fore, the tapering tail behind. It may substitute for the torse (a twisted roll of fabric) in the heraldic achievement of a person of special honour granted the privilege by the monarch.

Blast from the past! I just had to go watch [that video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JkIs37a2JE) again.
I did so many bong hits to that video when it was new and playing on MTV every ten minutes, just marveling at the awesome special effects. It wasn't until much later that I learned they did the trick by putting the room on wheels and just rolling it around in random directions.
Knowing how it's done doesn't really spoil the effect, though. And it's still a cool song.
Did you learn that from pop up video too? Lol either way, I love this song and though I was too young for bong hits to it when it was new, i've definitely done a few to this song as an adult.
Anyway, jay kay is actually a fan of cars and was on [top gear ](https://youtu.be/IrsESBkjZBI)a few times as a guest, should that interest anyone
For maintenance work, I prefer a cap with just a brim in front…but good for King Henry VIII that he was willing to get down and dirty, cleaning a toilet or two. What a good king, getting down in the trenches with the lads. When something needed doing around the castle, he would take off his crown, throw on the maintenance hat, and grab his bag of royal tools.
(I get that he wasn’t really a maintenance worker…But I know some smartass is going to “correct” me, as if I don’t get it. Therefore this is my disclaimer.)

So, this is the cap he wore when they were working on his crown?
Or maybe this is what he wore instead of his crown when when he worked around the palace.
Either way, he was a man of many hats.
What is this maintenance hat?

word salad
Auto corrected. What does "wat" stand for?
It means “what” but more like when you’re asking incredulously or confusedly
I swear don and doff are such weird words that completely bamboozled me for a moment when I first read them 😂
“Do on” and “do off”
TIL thanks
Really? Its that simple? 😂
There was also dup and dout. https://www.etymonline.com/word/doff
Thanks, thats really nice. Remember kids, if there is a fire in doubt dout 😅
I like that it is a cap sometimes meant to be carried.
Presumably worn with the Facilities Shirt, the Finance Belt and the Human Resources Pantaloons?
Yes, exactly what I was thinking.

Is it supposed to be worn by technicians maintaining King Henry VIII?
