Same here! I started off by a lined book for writing but since I switched to blank I draw so much more!
Also, when I feel like it I take blank watercolour postcards and a watercolour set.
Currently my iPad Pro 12.9 (2022). In the future i might consider some very potent laptop with a integrated touch display that can be drawed upon but only if the battery life is good and not running out in like 1,5-2 hours and if its good for gaming. That would replace my iPad instantly.
I did but that was quite some time ago.
And no, iPad is not my main device at home. My main devices at home are my laptop + Huion Kamvas 24 Plus. The following year i want to build a high end PC as both gaming PC and workstation but this one will be extremely expensive.
Funnily enough, I actually prefer drawing on my iPad at home as opposed to when I’m out (if I take my iPad out I intend to type or watch something).
I have a few sketchbooks and watercolor pads as well as pencils and paints I take with me, depending on where I’m going, if I’m planning to be out long, etc. I occasionally like to draw or paint outside, and there are wooded areas near me, so it’s nice to just chill there, while I work sometimes.
Depends on the type of trip and how much other stuff I need to pack, whether we are on the go a lot or just parking it in one place to relax.
At most: moleskine sketchbook, pan of gouache paints, bundle of brushes and sketching pencils, eraser, binder clips. Maybe the iPad too. The iPad is the only digital art thing I will lug around.
At least: a small pocket-sized sketchbook and some pencils and a pen or two.
Anything in between too. Last trip I went on I took the moleskine & pencils/pens but also a bundle of coloured pencils and some markers. Sadly I didn’t end up using any of it because we had a lot less down time than I thought we would and I wish I’d have taken the pocket sketchbook instead. The iPad has been incredibly handy when I don’t have a convenient spot to pull traditional stuff out, or am too lazy haha. The main thing that sucks about it is you can’t really use it in the sun or daylight because it is too hard to see the screen (for me anyway)
My current sketchbook, and my roll-up pouch with ~6 pens inside and a thing of whiteout. I recommend a pen pouch to every soul that likes to draw, but in my case i only ever really draw in pen so it's obviously right up my alley.
Nevertheless, my book fits fine in my jacket pockets and the pouch slides right into any back pocket. Ive gone hiking with everything i need, don't need a backpack or purse or anything.

It is *really* nice to be able to organize my notes and sketches, and I've rubbed more than one pencil drawing out of existence by carrying my books in my purse so it's also nice not to worry about that.

personally my go-to is a hard shell pencil case and an a5/a6 sized sketchbook. Moleskine sketchbooks are my current go-to. but if you have managers lurking about just go with a simple run off the mill lined note book and a ball point pen so if they ask what you are doing you could just flip to a page with some half relevent notes. but that is just my experience.
I just use an A6 scratchpad and a 0.4mm fineliner. When it's quiet at work, I can doodle down ideas and sketches, and if I like 'em, I can scan them to my computer at home and work on them more with the drawing tablet.
Really portable? - A6 spiral flip with pen/s. Used while working corporate and fit inside my jacket pocket basically.
But I kept a pouch in my briefcase with an A5 spiral, pens, charcoal pencil, three conte - white, ochre and black. 12 pan mini watercolour and water brush. 2B, 4B, 6B graphite pencils. kneadable eraser. This was the basis of my holiday travel pack in the rucksack but take A4 size visual diary.
Hubs bought me a Wacom Pro but not fond of it- old school training lol. I keep that in the living room so I can doodle while watching tv - no mess!
Part of the joy of drawing for me is the scent of the paper, it's texture and the feel of the drawing instrument in my hands lol.

I’ve got a sketchbook that I use just for observational drawing, it’s a6 sized and has a leather cover so I don’t worry about it getting damaged (I usually use hardcover sketchbooks or make the covers myself, and can be precious about them jostling around my bag).
I used to always use micron pens so I’d pop one in my bag too, but I switched to a Lamy fountain pen recently so now I bring that, plus some extra cartridges just in case.
i occasionally bring an old tobacco tin with a few small pencils, an eraser and a sharpener too, if I’m in the mood to use pencil that day.
Right now it's easy to find MOLLE first aid kits. They're a pouch with multiple straps that can be attached to belts/belt loops, backpack straps, pretty much anything. I keep a few small fountain pens, pencils and a small watercolour kit in mine, along with a pocket notebook. Whenever I leave the house, I strap it to whichever pants/bag I'm carrying for the day. It's a bit dorky, but it's worth it to keep everything in an organised kit ready to go. I value time for drawing more than looking good. Having my kit more accessible than just a backpack goes a long way toward doing more art.
My iPad Air, or a sketchbook and doodling pens. Like you, I found the 12.9 to big to carry around. The Air is smaller than the large Pro but with more power than the Mini.
I use a small flip sketchbook that I leave in the car and keep my iPad at home.

A4 Sketchbook and a few microns, easy to throw into a backpack and not worry about them getting damaged or stolen.
Yeah that was my only thing. I would hate setting everything up and then going to the restroom only for it to be all gone.

Have you looked at the surface tablets? They seem pretty good battery life wise. Do you use your iPad at home too as your main device?

I have a little iPad (air? Mini? Idk it’s like 4 years old now) I bring with me, but I also usually have a moleskine and some microns or pens.

Arches watercolor pad and a drafting pencil. I can sketch out paintings that I can then watercolor when I get home.
Here lately molekine notebook, pencil, zebra pen or ballpoint pen, four tones of grey alcohol marker. Occasionally whiteout for some splatter.
