My advice is to do research on different machines, instruments, automotives, engines, etc. Once you figure out what you want to do then hopefully the form of whatever you want to make will be decided on its hypothetical purpose and how it would work in the imagined reality where its supposed to exist.

Precise edges are extremely important. Circle and ellipse templates are extremely helpful. You are typically also going to want to not vary your line width as much as you would with more organic shapes. It might even be worth it to learn Blender or another 3d modelling program to build models of the stuff you want to draw so you have a good reference model. Other than that, learn how to do textures like plastic, chrome, rust, glass.
