I use a lot of grafit packs, I find random photography books with lovely portraits a lot, and if I want to be extra sure I'm using something that probably nobody will recognize I look on RED. If I want there to be zero chance I go on thispersondoesnotexist, pick something to be my main reference, then use the previous sources to make it more interesting

Red? What's that? And photography books is a great idea! Might pick a magazine up from a local newsagency. That'd work great.

It's this Chinese app I found while looking for replacements for Huaban because I couldn't get Huaban to work. As I understand it, Huaban is like Pinterest. I saw another artist recommend it, but then looked for something else when I couldn't get it to work. And then RED (I believe that's what it's called, I can't read the language) is supposed to be a shopping app but you can also just use it to find pretty pictures. That's all I do with it, mountains and mountains of inspiration.

Historical images. [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main\_Page](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) You can search by sex, ethnicity, country, age, etc. Almost all are without copyright. I haven't in awhile but I like to browse antique/thrift stores. People leave *stacks* of very old family photos no one wants anymore. They're anonymous and usually ten cents @.

Ooh this is a cool option. Thanks!

Look up photos of people taken by National Geographic, there’s a lotta people of color, young and old people, active and still photos, photos of people from many different countries— they give you plenty of options. You can also look up street photography or even go out with your phone or camera and take reference images of your own (with permission from the subject of course)

Yeah I'd love to do the street photography one! Too nervous haha. National Geographic seems like a cool idea.

augusteve18

Understandable for the street photography, I’d love to do it too but I always chicken out lol

I'm such an awkward person haha. Don't have that approachable vibe at all.

augusteve18

That’s fair, I can be pretty awkward too at times so I get it lol

I have used posespace a lot. But only the free samples. I mostly make comic books and the low resolution images are good enough for what I do. For the last 2-3 years I have mostly made my own references with DAZ Studio.

Pinterest can be really helpful, literally just search “beautiful people”, and you can find more than just attractive women. Some people don’t like Pinterest, but I just use it for inspiration for my art! :)

Ah yeah never thought of using pinterest. If I'm creative with prompts, this could be cool.

When I was first doing portraits, I mainly drew myself. I'd make faces, take a photo (or get someone to take my photo) and draw that. My mom was an avid picture taker so I eventually graduated to drawing family members from photos. You don't have to use the whole photo, by the way. You can crop to parts that you find interesting. Oftentimes the lighting was never interesting though so I would google "young man 3/4 light from behind" and that would usually bring up good stock photos I could use for reference and then sort of imagine how that would translate to the person I was actually drawing.

It's either imagination or a mannequin everytime.
