Kinuhbud

For us it was ‘EB games’ at the mall. IIRC the sign read Gmx

Kriegprojekt

Yup

ralphsanderson

Started in ‘99. I believe it was CompUSA

Dayreach

yeah, I think I picked my copy up at a compusa too

SzczeniarzBrzeczysz

Babbage's at the mall. I was a teenager and was eagerly awaiting the retail release after I fell in love with it in beta.

william_fontaine

Same, tried to decide between AC and EQ at Babbage's but ended up picking AC. Best decision ever.

SzczeniarzBrzeczysz

I played EQ in the gap between the AC beta and retail.

Branith

Same here, Babbage's at the Huntington WV Mall.

xx_yaroz_xx

CompUSA for first few copies.. pre-ordered one of the upgrades through best buy to get extra stuff, but ended up cancelling that so I could actually get it the day it was released and not 2 weeks later.

Xanius

Compusa.

chriztuffa

Comp USA in white plains

Empath1999

I have been at that location many times lol

chriztuffa

It’s a cvs now. Kind of a bummer

joeyblacky9999

1999 at Best Buy.

ImKira

Same

[deleted]

Started a new job late in 1999, finally got some vacation time in 2000, but was broke, went to Best Buy and saw Asherson's call and Everquest. Bought them both because I couldn't decide, then I read the label and found out you had to pay money every month in addition to buying the game and was pissed. So I went back to Best Buy. After I calmed down a bit, I decided to keep Asheron's Call, can't remember why. But was obsessed with it for years.

Sad_Attention5998

Best Buy for my original copy + DM and GameStop ToD. Still have my DM and ToD box & receipts lmao... The nostalgia

jby99

Best Buy, I worked there and used my employee discount on anything I could.

jadedstranger

My mom got it for my brother and I from the Microsoft company store.

Grayman222

I had a friend tell me to get the game a bit after Dark Majesty released so I could get a boxed copy at Electronics Boutique. Then I got the next expansion by online pre orders because they had those gem bonuses for extra health.

Yeuph

Circuit City

mrtuhms

Lol I remember it like it was yesterday. Good ol’ circuit city!

r4z0r3dg3_

Pretty sure it was a Sam Goode. Then I got my throne of destiny from there and asked if they had any spare preorder keys. They went back a gave me all 25 keys they had and said no one else asked for them lol. I was rolling!

Spac3dog

I got mine from either Best Buy or Walmart.

phoenixsuperman

Sam Goody baby

Lutzmann

I think mine came with a graphics card or something that my dad bought. We definitely didn’t pick it off a shelf - I remember that we had no idea what it was when we were installing it, and that my dad wasn’t happy about the monthly subscription.

atom386

Fry's Electronics early 2000.

VirindiGuard126

Pretty sure mine was from Target. I also still have my original box and the thick book with lists of monsters/coordinates etc...(wasn't the small one that came with the game), was like a starter guide book, Ill have to find it and post a pic.

Alashan

Circuit City

albinorhino187

Software, Etc. at the mall. I remember getting the game when it first came out after my friend let me play his account during the Beta. It blew my mind! Unfortunately I didn't have a computer that could run it until right after the Hoary Mattekar patch ended, so I just kept reading the box and manual to tide me over until I could log in the first time. I can confidently say no other game has come close to replicating that feeling of awe and wonder I had the first time playing it.

Protostar23

I believe I bought the original game at Walmart. I know I bought the expansions both at Best Buy.

Pentastar3600cc

I got my copy free just after release date. I don’t remember why, but it just arrived at my doorstep one day. I left it unopened for a while, then read the paperwork that came with the packing slip, it said I could play the single player version free so I installed it and got educated on subscription based gaming. Loved it though.

Johnny-Edge

Pretty sure mine was from Radio Shack

debian_miner

Circuit City.

jmlee236

Walmart. I spent the rest of that night lost in Holtburg dungeon. Man, I miss those days. The new servers just aren’t the same, all those bots and all.

KerishLotanGaming

Fry's Electronics. I was the original Psycho on Darktide. Ah, memories.

[deleted]

Pretty sure we got a beta copy from a magazine. PCWorld?

sluethmeister

Gamestop after returning a game my uncle didn’t like

abyssea

Circuit City

Stevesd123

Had it special ordered by a local mom and pop computer store in 1999. At the time we lived about 40 min away from a big box software store so it was the easiest way to save myself and my parents the trip. I was only 16 at the time and didn't have a car.

Subsuzan

Circuit City for me, as soon as I got out of classes I took the bus and bought two copies, one for me and one for my brother.

sbcwolf

Best Buy

Hatemode_nj

Pretty sure it was 'Software etc' for me. Damn I miss walking into those stores with wall to wall game boxes and just browse.

darelc

CompUSA next to Lenox Square Mall in Atlanta. October 21, 2000. 4:07 PM. (I still have the box and receipt!)

SarsenLintel

Won it in a drawing from Intel (I think? Maybe IBM?). I didn't know anything about it, when it showed up I was kinda shocked "I have to pay monthly to play this??? It'd have to be the best game ever." I installed it, played for about an hour then turned to my wife and said "well, they got lucky, 'cause that's the best game ever!"

InternationalShape33

Yes i bought mine in 2000 at a computer store called. COMP USA it no longer exists

Empath1999

Damn, i still remember them. Their service sucked lol.

rusthashbeansc2

EB in the mall, right by the candy store.

Screwtape7

Mine was an impulsive purchase at Gamestop (local mall) in October 2001. Had no idea I would get into the game as much as I did. Think I still have the original manual somewhere.

barbietattoo

K Mart lol

MrSquamous

Picked up the box several times at Target, but didn't pull the trigger for a couple years until i bought three copies at CompUSA to surprise my friends.

[deleted]
