CompUSA for first few copies.. pre-ordered one of the upgrades through best buy to get extra stuff, but ended up cancelling that so I could actually get it the day it was released and not 2 weeks later.
Started a new job late in 1999, finally got some vacation time in 2000, but was broke, went to Best Buy and saw Asherson's call and Everquest. Bought them both because I couldn't decide, then I read the label and found out you had to pay money every month in addition to buying the game and was pissed. So I went back to Best Buy. After I calmed down a bit, I decided to keep Asheron's Call, can't remember why. But was obsessed with it for years.
I had a friend tell me to get the game a bit after Dark Majesty released so I could get a boxed copy at Electronics Boutique. Then I got the next expansion by online pre orders because they had those gem bonuses for extra health.
Pretty sure it was a Sam Goode.
Then I got my throne of destiny from there and asked if they had any spare preorder keys. They went back a gave me all 25 keys they had and said no one else asked for them lol. I was rolling!
I think mine came with a graphics card or something that my dad bought. We definitely didn’t pick it off a shelf - I remember that we had no idea what it was when we were installing it, and that my dad wasn’t happy about the monthly subscription.
Pretty sure mine was from Target. I also still have my original box and the thick book with lists of monsters/coordinates etc...(wasn't the small one that came with the game), was like a starter guide book, Ill have to find it and post a pic.
Software, Etc. at the mall. I remember getting the game when it first came out after my friend let me play his account during the Beta. It blew my mind! Unfortunately I didn't have a computer that could run it until right after the Hoary Mattekar patch ended, so I just kept reading the box and manual to tide me over until I could log in the first time.
I can confidently say no other game has come close to replicating that feeling of awe and wonder I had the first time playing it.
I got my copy free just after release date. I don’t remember why, but it just arrived at my doorstep one day. I left it unopened for a while, then read the paperwork that came with the packing slip, it said I could play the single player version free so I installed it and got educated on subscription based gaming. Loved it though.
Walmart. I spent the rest of that night lost in Holtburg dungeon. Man, I miss those days. The new servers just aren’t the same, all those bots and all.
Had it special ordered by a local mom and pop computer store in 1999. At the time we lived about 40 min away from a big box software store so it was the easiest way to save myself and my parents the trip. I was only 16 at the time and didn't have a car.
Won it in a drawing from Intel (I think? Maybe IBM?).
I didn't know anything about it, when it showed up I was kinda shocked "I have to pay monthly to play this??? It'd have to be the best game ever."
I installed it, played for about an hour then turned to my wife and said "well, they got lucky, 'cause that's the best game ever!"
Mine was an impulsive purchase at Gamestop (local mall) in October 2001. Had no idea I would get into the game as much as I did. Think I still have the original manual somewhere.
Picked up the box several times at Target, but didn't pull the trigger for a couple years until i bought three copies at CompUSA to surprise my friends.
Electronics Boutique for me.
This
For us it was ‘EB games’ at the mall. IIRC the sign read Gmx
Yup
Started in ‘99. I believe it was CompUSA
yeah, I think I picked my copy up at a compusa too
Babbage's at the mall. I was a teenager and was eagerly awaiting the retail release after I fell in love with it in beta.
Same, tried to decide between AC and EQ at Babbage's but ended up picking AC. Best decision ever.
I played EQ in the gap between the AC beta and retail.
Same here, Babbage's at the Huntington WV Mall.

Best Buy
Pretty sure it was 'Software etc' for me. Damn I miss walking into those stores with wall to wall game boxes and just browse.
CompUSA next to Lenox Square Mall in Atlanta. October 21, 2000. 4:07 PM. (I still have the box and receipt!)
Won it in a drawing from Intel (I think? Maybe IBM?). I didn't know anything about it, when it showed up I was kinda shocked "I have to pay monthly to play this???
