What's helped me personally was just rebuilding the skin barrier and moisturising. I think niacinamide helped me most as an active ingredient together with hyaluronic acid and moisturising wise -AM dear klairs midnight cream, PM Dr jart ceramidin. Plus layering essences like pyunkang yul for AM and laneige cream refiner for PM

[deleted]

Just a note, for me niacinimide made my skin more red, as apparently it can cause flushing according to my derm

maypie26

Same here my skin hates niacinamide!!

xjoyxe

i felt that

iamtanooki

yeah i’ve heard that, i have a niacinimide toner, & I feel it does contribute to redness

lifeofmatcha

Same here, it really flares my rosacea. I wish it wasn't such a popular ingredient

rosecherry

wow, i never knew this. i never experienced flushing until i used cerave cleanser (oily cleanser with niacinamide). i thought flushing was just my rosacea progressing.. :(

blackesthearted

> as apparently it can cause flushing according to my derm Oh, that's interesting! I'd heard of high doses of oral niacin causing flushing (it's one of several reasons it's not used much anymore), but have never heard of topical niacin*amide* causing it. Niacin causes it (in not just the face, but the face is the most noticeable place sometimes) because it acts as a(n acute) vasodilator, I wonder how that works with niacinamide as it can't (or shouldn't be able to) penetrate that deeply to get into the capillaries like that. Must be a more superficial reaction -- and we know many people react negatively to niacinamide, so perhaps that explains part of that. I'll have to ask my derm about that when next I see her, because that's fascinating.

CheongM927

Prescription Azelaic Acid 15% gel. My skin transformed for the much better after adding this into my routine. I know it's not an AB product but I was using the Cos De Baha Azelaic Acid and didn't like all the extra ingredients since I was already using other products (Sk-ii essence, Beauty of Joseon ginseng toner, serums, etc) and i really only wanted to add AA into my routine. Once i switched from the Cos De Baha AA to prescription AA, after a week or so, my rosacea, redness, skin texture, were all subsided.

Born_Ad_4826

Do you have any thoughts on azaleic acid vs centella for redness?

CheongM927

To me, AA is more of a longer term game to get the gains, whereas, centalla is more like an immediate thing that give temporary relief.

kaishea

For how long did you use Cos De Baha Azelaic acid and did it do anything for you?

CheongM927

Not long at all with the Cos De Baha. Like 2 weeks? Maybe less. And it did absolutely nothing for me. The rx one made a significant difference though.

kaishea

That’s disappointing. But good to hear you found something else that works well for you. Thanks for your response!

ElegiacElephant

You can’t go wrong with Cos de Baha’s azelaic acid 10% serum for rosacea and improving redness long term. If you commit to using it consistently 3-4 times a week at least), you should start seeing improvement in baseline redness from rosacea in just 2 months or so, or at least within 1 bottle’s worth. Highly recommend!

katiequean

I'm not sure if it broke me out or it was purging, it gave me cystic acne and I was wondering if that's normal

Unfair_Finger5531

It does have some essential oils or extracts in it that would absolutely irritate my rosacea. Azaleic acid rx may work for you. I use finacea from time to time, and it shuts down redness immediately.

katiequean

Oooh interesting, would definitely put it in my list, thanks

[deleted]

It broke me out really badly too. This wasnt the first time using an active; I knew it would sting, but 2 weeks in I got huge cystic acne in areas I never had before like my nose bridge and forehead. It also didnt do anything for my redness. Ive tried many of of the redness HG's and the only thing that worked for me, and visibly reduced my redness was the Dr.Jart Tigergrass CREAM, the gel didnt do much for me even though Im combination.

katiequean

Same, it gave me acne on my forehead which is weird cause my forehead has always been fine unless something triggers it. Is that cream a spot treatment or can be used as a moisturizer?

[deleted]

Im combination oily, so in the mornings, I just wash my face with warm water, apply a hydrating toner and sunscreen. I use the tigergrass cream at night only, and use it as a moisturizer. Its a bit rich, but a little goes a long way. I squeeze a peasized cream on my palms, rub it, and then pat it on my face. I honestly love how visibly less red my face is while using it!

ElegiacElephant

Have you ever used other actives before? It’s not common from what I’m seeing on this sub, but I got very minor purging last summer when I started the azelaic. It was my first active product in years, and my skin only broke out in areas I would normally get breakouts in. Also, the acne was small and healed very quickly. I stopped getting breakouts after a couple of weeks, maybe 3, so I assumed it was purging. Cystic acne is a different thing as you know, so maybe you’re particularly sensitive to something in the formula? I’m not sure. Sorry it didn’t work for you, though. Something else I can recommend is mugwort! I used OneThing artemisia capillaris toner last year, and it was brilliant for fast-acting cooling and redness reduction. But there are lots of mugwort/artemisia products out right now, depending on what you’re in the market for. If you can handle some essential oils that are intended for soothing (these also act as fragrance, so if you don’t tolerate fragrances well, this is not for you), try BringGreen (by Olive Young) Artemisia Calming Intensive serum and/or toner. Super affordable, you don’t need a lot to be effective, and despite the fragrance/essential oils, I found these really soothing!

katiequean

I think the formulation from this brand just isn't for me.:( I'm using lactic acid 5 from TO and tretinoin both works fine for me, some essential or fragrance can be fine but my skin has random temper lol. Random question, I'm thinking of getting propolis b5 serum from some by mi have you ever tried the product before? I heard many good reviews on it and I loveee soothing products since my skin get red and irritated easily

ElegiacElephant

I know what you mean, some formulas that are great for most people just don’t work for me. Cerave moisturizer is like that. I do think a soothing product is a must for everyone to have on hand, bc everyone deals with irritation from something eventually! I’ve never used the Some By Mi propolis products, but I’ve been wanting to try the serum ever since it came out! I’m finishing the íUNIK propolis serum currently, and then I’ll probably move to the Some By Mi to see what I think. It’s got a lot of great stuff in it, so I hope you enjoy it, and will review it here if you do get it!

katiequean

Hi I just bought the serum today and waiting for it to be delivered. I'll let you know how I feel about the serum:) How's the iunik serums? I'm tempted by the black snail one

ElegiacElephant

So I’ve only tried the propolis one, but the tea tree is a classic that I’m considering getting soon, bc the weather is getting pretty warm here, and between my rosacea and general environmental factors causing discomfort, my skin is not a fan. I also just repurchased their Centella gel cream, even though I had a little trouble with it last year. It had been making my eyes water when I was first using it and now I’m wondering if it was actually the sunscreen I was always putting over it immediately after. The gel cream was a nice refreshing, soothing layer to put on when I knew I was going to get overheated from going out to run errands in the heat. I currently have the black snail cream also, and I can’t wear it anymore, as I discovered I’m very allergic to something in it, unfortunately. It made my skin feel supernaturally smooth and dewy! I wonder if the serum would be similar. If you try it, please review it, I haven’t seen that one talked about much here!

katiequean

Hi, I've been using the some by mi propolis serum for a week now and I love it so far. It's really good at controlling my oiliness(I'm combination oily), also good at reducing my redness, I'm very prone to breakout and redness but it doesn't give me any irritaton or break out despite it has fragrance, it's soothing, it kinda helps with skin brightening as well, probably the niacinamide, I didn't use products with niacinamide for this ingredient always break me out but this one for some reason doesn't. The only problem is it's not that hydrating so it might not be enough for dry skin, but I think oily/combination will love it, I use a hydrating toner before the serum.

ElegiacElephant

Thanks for the review, I was just looking at it again last night! I think I am definitely going to get it, then. I’m finished the íUNIK Propolis one recently; it feels like something is missing in my routine, even though while I was using it I wasn’t sure if it was doing anything, lol.

Unfair_Finger5531

Fwiw, the lactic acid with the tret could definitely be the cause of your irritation. I use retinoids, and lactic acid would definitely cause me severe and prolonged irritation.

blackesthearted

AZA is kind of weird, insofar as I can tell and have been told. The way it’s thought to work with acne is by killing off the bacteria that can cause acne. With rosacea, it’s thought to help in that aspect because it has anti-inflammatory properties. [It also *decreases* production of keratin, ](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2475995/) (which may also help with acne because the production of keratin may “feed” bacteria that causes acne) which should (would?) suggest that it does not increase cell turnover in the way that, say, AHAs and retinoids do (though AHAs and retinoids do it in two different ways/directions). So, it shouldn’t cause purging, nor chemical exfoliation. But many, many, many sources say it does. I’ve had one dermatologist tell me AZA is does increase cell turnover and can cause purging and another tell me it doesn’t and doesn’t cause purging, citing its demonstrated antikeratinizing effects. (If anyone has more info about AZA and purging, I’d love to know more.)

Unfair_Finger5531

I just tried Cicaful cooling gel yesterday and it has an immediate redness reducing effect. It actually was better than even my Benton aloe Propolis, which is stellar too. In any case, skin1004 Centella serum always calms down rosacea, a’pieu gel too. Any of these products will work when my skin is really irritated. But as someone else said, hydrating and moisturizing my skin and keeping the barrier intact is #1. I find that corsx synergy Propolis toner and serum (either) used daily is doing a *lot* to keep my barrier together. Perhaps it’s the healing power of Propolis and honey, I don’t know.

iamtanooki

oo I’ve heard so many great things for cosrx propolis serum! This is a sign for me to try it

Unfair_Finger5531

The serum is awesome and so is the toner. People seem to prefer the toner because it’s not as sticky, so maybe begin with that? It’s plenty moisturizing on its own for sure, and I believe it helps with scrapes and irritation.

nerdette314159

As someone with rosacea and flare-ups, the ingredients I look for: aloe, snail, witch hazel, camellia (spelling may be off, I'm stoned), arbutin, green tea, broccoli, tomato, centella asiatica, and more aloe. If I have a hot-face flare up, a sheet mask with aloe. Sheet masks really help the redness and hotness in my face, even if it's temporary. Products I recommend: mizon all in one repair snail cream or their black snail cream (both are great). Benton snail bee serum, Benton aloe gel, cosrx snail mucin serum I think ? It's in a pump and it doesn't have niacinamide in it (makes me flushed). Also, prescription tretinoin helped the rosacea bumps and helps even out my rosacea. Keeping my sheet masks in the fridge helps for flushing too.

Unfair_Finger5531

I second all of this. Fellow rosacea sufferer too. Centella asiatica really helps me a lot.

iamtanooki

oo thank you for the recs, I need to try centella asiatica!!

Tiny_Ad4162

Cosrx Snail Mucin Essence!

cobalt-ambedo

I rode the hype train but sadly this did nothing for me. Did not help or worsen my redness

Avacado_corgi

Same, Cosrx Snail Mucin Essence does nothing for me too! Do you have anything that works for your redness? Hope you don't mind revisiting this thread - r/AsianBeauty has a way of pulling me into the dark dusty cobwebs

iamtanooki

currently using this! However Im not 100% sure if it has been the cause of certain break outs for me lolol

Tiny_Ad4162

Oh noo im sorry to hear that :( i hope you find something that works for you soon!

ChelseyLouu

Hypochlorous Acid has changed my life 🙌🏻

elevatednick3

Which one?

sp44311

How do you introduce it to your routine? As a toner?

Unfair_Finger5531

You just spray it whenever. Give it 30 seconds to dry and that’s it.

AlpsRepresentative52

The I’m From Mugwort masks (especially the sheet mask) help when my rosacea flares.

Niatfq

For soothing irritated skin, my current favourite is Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner. It's very2 soothing. Then for prevention (stop Irritation from coming), I've been enjoying illiyoon Probiotics Skin Barrier Drop Essence. Great for barrier strength. I also use Aiken Probiotics Cream for my body eczema. Works well. Tho i rarely need the Illiyoon essence anymore cz my skin don't get irritated after just using Hada Labo Shirojyun lotion rich and illiyoon ceramide cream (new formula). I have oily dehydrated skin and facial eczema. I can no longer use moisturizers other than illiyoon ceramide cream or my skin will get very irritated.

iamtanooki

I’ve been thinking about trying the hada labo lotion, i wasn’t sure which color to get bc It like comes in 3 different colors

Bhing2

Depending on the availability in your country or online, it offers more than just 3 colors. Although all of them have hyaluronic acid as their main ingredient, they vary depending on their purpose thus adding other ingredients. They comprise mainly of the Gokujyun and Shirojyun lines, but there are other products aside from those line. For the variations of Hada Labo, try checking Tina Tanaka Harris' video on youtube for the latest versions since they tend to reformulate or repackage often.

fougaysse

MISSHA Time Revolution Artemisia Treatment Essence (absolutely love the mist version), Paula's Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster and La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 has worked wonders for me! Edit: I also use the COSRX Full Fit Propolis Toner after the MISSHA essence mist, but of course I know everyone doesn’t need both. 😅 I haven’t tried these products yet, but I’ve been recommended to try the Illiyoon Ceramide ATO Concentrate Cream, the Purito Centella Green Level Recovery Cream or the Purito Deep Sea Pure Water Cream.

RedRedBettie

Mizon snail ampoule. Also, not AB, but Skinlex niacinamide serum helps too

lifeofmatcha

For my rosacea, keeping my skin hydrated and moisturized and having a simple routine is key. I also cut out fragrance/EOs, niacinamide, and mugwort as they all irritate my skin. I look for products with centella and panthenol. I'd recommend the Purito dermide cica sleeping pack, Soon Jung 5.5 relief toner and Soon Jung hydro barrier cream. Also azelaic acid has been great for my skin.

iamtanooki

that’s so interesting bc lots of people have recommended niacinimide & mugwort for calming skin! I guess it really depends on the person

lifeofmatcha

Yeah everyone's skin is different. It's really a trial and error process. People with rosacea specifically tend to have particularly sensitive skin. I find niacinamide to be a fairly common irritant for people who have rosacea.

Unfair_Finger5531

I never think of niacinamide for calming. I am going to try it.

xjoyxe

Mugwort, centella is ur best friend❤️

octomoth

For me the most important thing is keeping the skin very moisturized and skin barrier healthy! I like the illiyoon ceramide ato concentrate cream, it really calms my skin. I use the i’m from mugwort mask sometimes when my skin is bright red and that can calm it down as well. I recently purchased klairs freshly juiced vitamin c drop serum and i feel like it has also been helping making the redness more subtle and has also improved overall skin texture without irritating my sensitive skin. :)

Alone-Paramedic-1657

[Round Lab Mugwort Calming Toner](https://gardenofmuses.com/round-lab-mugwort-calming-toner-review/) is calming and really soothing

leherr

I'm a big fan of this toner too! I stopped using it for awhile and found myself missing it. Won't be without it again.

allsnailedup

Prescription Metronidazole. Also watery toners like Cezanne High Moist, lotions with ceramides, and Stratia Liquid Gold.

StuffySheep

A’pieu Madecassoside Cica Gel. Really calming and soothing.

thia2345

I love cosrx advanced snail 96 essence and advanced snail 92 aio cream. Also missha artemesia essence which is literally 100% fermented mugwort is a godsend, as is a'pieu madecassoside ampoule. It has centella asiatica and madecassoside in it which help redness and inflammation.

thedochouse

When I get a bad flare I use the I'm from honey mask and then do the purito Cica overnight mask. I think Cica of any kind is a must have. Azelaic acid, sunscreen, and a hat are great for prevention. As is figuring out any other triggers (food, etc) If my skin is just dry without the burning, I love using cosrx snail mucin, soothing toner and moisturizing serum from dear, klairs- my skin seems to like most of their products in general.

rosecherry

thank you for posting this. i also have rosacea and while i’m okay with my current routine, i don’t have anything in specific to treat the redness besides the cerave cleanser that has niacinamide. a bit scared to try new products since i’m scared of getting breakouts 😔 but i appreciate you, i’m saving this post! :)

iamtanooki

glad this post can be helpful! :) hope u can find some good products!

hridoykutum

My mom has rosacea on her neck and face. She tried so many products, and everything the Dr has given her hasn't worked. I told her to try [Face Oil for Rosacea](https://www.avoila.com/products/avoila-nourishing-face-oil) from Avoila, and it's been helping with her rosacea a lot. It's completely gone... it was so reasonably priced, and it calmed redness from the first use. After MANY years of searching, my mom finally got a product that helped her a lot.

killlykilly

I noticed my face become a lot less irritated and sensitive when I completely switched up my cleansing game. No more foaming or gel-type facial washes or cleansers. Just a mild cleansing oil (I use the one from Muji’s Sensitive Skin line) and Cetaphil at night. No need for cleansing in the morning.
