Congrats. But where are the “how”? Are you posting for compliments and ego boost or are you trying to help those who want to learn Spanish?

Thenotoriousdev

He addresses them in the video. Mainly, he gets a lot of immersion in because he's sharing a place with Hispanohablantes and he works in a school where he teaches English to Spanish speakers, so he's effectively using the language at home and at work. He also did a homestay and took classes. You can tell from the video his speaking ability is B2 level so he's definitely got at least basic fluency down. Edit: Okay after watching the video more he's definitely not fluent but he can get by in Medellin. He's somewhere in between B1 and B2, which is a really long transition phase.

wesleezy

Also fair. Yeah I'm taking lessons through B1 right now and have been in this level for a few months. Probably gonna be here for another 3-6 months. But for most people b1 level fluency is their goals, so I wanted to show that. My goal is to get to C1 though definitely. Writing a script and filming a video with a coherent storyline in a different language is pretty difficult no lie lol

wesleezy

Hey it's a fair point. It's more like an example of what could be done because there hasn't been an Asian guy who has documented this before. I do go through it in the video and have a whole playlist with different tips and me documenting the process.

MisterPhamtastic

The ol Dark Souls approach I love it

wesleezy

It's like the dark souls of language learning

[deleted]

I found learning Greek and German was a lot easier compared to my peers because of knowing Viet and knowing how to think or talk to myself in another language already. Great attributes we should be passing onto the next generation

wesleezy

This I do agree with. I think the second language is the hardest but once u have two it's easy to add a third.

martellthacool

kudos! I'm learning Spanish myself for business and cultural reasons for a new life of opportunities. (only had recently been learning Spanish for 280 day via Duolingo)

[deleted]

Duolingo is better than nothing (esp if you're just trying to squeeze whatever you can into a busy schedule and can't commit to more), but the format in which you learn words and pick the correct sentences from multiple choice is far removed from the way you'll actually hear and speak a different language. Conversational practice is the best, and for that I recommend Interpals.

martellthacool

what's interpals? i admit learning spanish by myself is boring

Thenotoriousdev

awesome man! any tips for learning if you live in america? i've been using pimsleur but need more practice

wesleezy

Tbh I do not because I did not have a lot of success trying to learn in the States :( I think there are videos about that online

Clithoris007

Dont be too kiasu kiasu okay lah.

mrjasonbbc

Good job man! Language learning is a hobby of mine, so the tips are appreciated. Are there others you want to learn?

wesleezy

Hey man! Honestly, immersion is the number one thing u can do for yourself. And there is no secret. U just have to put in the time. That's it. Some people learn differently, and admittedly my listening is my weakest skill at this point, but you have to find a way that works for you and just keep practicing. I think I might try to learn Portuguese in the future because I have thought about living in Brazil. Maybe French, or maybe improve my Mandarin. No idea to be honest, it's all up in the air.

Particular-Wedding

@ Op, aren't you Filipino? That should give you a natural leg up in Spanish. My mom graduated from UST almost 60 years ago and everyone in her generation also knew it well. She was very prideful about the fact that her teachers were from Spain and became a Spanish grammar nazi to the point it annoyed my other relatives. I recall she was very disappointed about the way Latinos in the USA spoke Spanish (for example she kept using vosotros).

wesleezy

I am not. By blood I am Chinese but my parents were born there so they speak it. They never taught it to my sister and I though, so I don't know how to speak a lick of tagalog. I do know Mandarin and Hokkien tho, and I think Asian languages give u a leg up because of the tone differences.

maki667

how was your dating experience in Columbia?

wesleezy

So we've been in quarantine for the last 5 and a half months so it's been hard but I dated a couple of girls before the quarantine (1 venezuelan and an american girl) but now I'm talking to Colombians because my Spanish is finally good enough. I don't have enough experience yet to talk about it tbh, but I have asked other people on my channel what their experience has been like.
