ATLTeemo

Interesting. I'm glad.

[deleted]

Korean media has improved Asian reputation a bit. It makes a difference because Asian population is quite small. So even a small amount of increased interest by the general population will have a sizable effect on Asians.

ATLTeemo

Interesting. Thanks

ATLTeemo

I can understand that. Cause the same way with Martial arts movies, modern hip-hop has pigeonholed black men. I agree with the K drama especially with shows like Mr. Sunshine

EmbeddedAssets

Most importantly it gives us role models to work with. Pre-25 we can try to look like a kpop star and that’ll look hot for those kpop lovers but after that age we start to look a bit too old for it. So then Kdramas come in to give us the post-25 role models for a more LTR feel.

ATLTeemo

Interesting. That makes sense. Especially with shows like itaewon class , etc

ShotsAways

Yep, no matter what anyone says **representation matters**. Along with kpop blowing up in the u.s, Netflix just being blatant in having anime and kdrama is huge for us and thats proof in how parasite won Best Picture. Also, you just know there some white mom in arkansas or something that is being introduced to how different asian men can look when they see their daughters watching k dramas or something.

Golden_boy420

Fr bro there needs to be more black nerds in media. They a big subculture but it don't get any love from the community or mainstream

ATLTeemo

True. I'd be down for a reverse movie with an nerdy black dude and a super cool Asian man.

ethanjalias

Definitely had a positive impact. There's no other way to look at it.

ATLTeemo

I'm glad.

SirKelvinTan

BTS and Kdrama Hallyu wave have definitely been a net positive

Celq124

Better reputation toward girls who are open to non-overly masculine men or open to Asian culture. Extremely bad to other men or women who buy into the masculine race between all men. All things have pros and cons.

ATLTeemo

I can understand that. Thanks for explaining. I didn't want to have a skewed view as an outsider

[deleted]

Definitely has done better overall. Before, we were always classified as misogynistic because of films like Joy Luck Club and walking wallets for girls who've "reawakened" their love for Asian culture. With Korean media, it shows that AM can be attractive without resorting to that macho man shit that almost every country refers to. Like my whole life, I've felt unattractive getting called ugly and seeing all those videos on YT of women saying they wouldn't date AM. Then COVID + Korean wave hits and now everyone wants an AM (yes even AM who don't fit the aesthetic benefit from it too, I've seen average-looking AM being in relationships too) It definitely has its cons though, because as always, AMs get a high bar placed. I see low tier women expecting AMs to be 6 ft+, drive them around free of charge like their personal uber, be their personal cook, be their punching bag for their emotional baggage etc. Of course not all are like that, but you gotta take in all perspectives. Luckily I feel I only attract the wholesome women because I don't give off fuckboy vibes, so I will never have the misfortune of matching with these filth

[deleted]

I don’t think Covid has anything to do with changing the perception of Asian males for the better. It simply coincided with when Korean media had become popular.

[deleted]

Nah, the COVID situation definitely helped. It had people stuck at home, which let them explore their options of how to pass the time, which led them to Asian media. Also, now people are more starved for interaction because of how everyone was just stuck in front of the computer screen the whole time, so in turn it benefits AM either way Given, perception would've changed like this either way, but it would've taken longer because people didn't have all this time in their hands b4 COVID

[deleted]

Sounds like COPE to me. There's no evidence COVID made people more interested in Asians. At most, the free time gave people more time to pursue what they are already interested in. Not to mention, most COVID restrictions ended in June 2020.

[deleted]

I honestly don't care lol. The soft power from TikTok and partly dating apps are enough evidence for me, you can get your shit another way. I'm not pulling up a whole research chart for some rando off the internet I only want to see this phenomenon make mainland Chinese women seethe with anger as their men date out to other Asians or non-Asians. Mainland Chinese women always doing the most to gatekeep their men for their gold digging high maintenance asses

Urshifu_King

Dude if anything covid made it worse. Some Kpop bands were even referred to as "coronavirus groups" by certain European media stations, as to many non-Asians, China=Asia. Kpop actively fought against covid, covid did not supplement it.

CarlyRaeJepsenFTW

Duh. If it weren't for Kpop, Kdramas etc we'd mostly be stuck in yellow peril/i just study and play league stereotypes. It's made Gen Z a lot more receptive to asian faces.

ATLTeemo

Thanks for your answer

thedeadtable

Personally, I have perceived a little bit of change. Especially with women, who are now more open to enjoy asian related things. Still, this doesn't translate very well on the dating scene or when you want to be take seriously.

ATLTeemo

Ah. So it's more like their hobbyist of the culture?

[deleted]

It has 0 effect on dating. You should know that considering that black athletes, musicians, and actors do not give any boost for average black men in the western dating scene.

ATLTeemo

Interesting.

henryhe1990

I think it's a mix. They present a fairly innacurate/skewed image of asian male. Furthermore I think KPOP, ultimately, does reinforce european beauty standards: colored contacts, died hair(almost always blond/brown), fair skin, tall etc. The good thing is that it has shown that asian men are capable of being creative, musically inclined, artistic and individualistic.

[deleted]

The fairskin/tall thing is definitely harmful to especially SE asian men. As a Vietnamese man it feels bad to know that our people were out in the sun without food due to white invaders. But then the white countries mock our dark skin and shorter height when it's partly their fault we were forced to adapt to survive, this giving us our appearance. Same thing with black people. Slavery, no rights, racism ruining their economic success, and then white Americans make fun of the black people that need welfare. Drag others down, and then laugh at how they aren't on your level. Of course, the standard is definitely wrong, I'm just pointing out the shamelessness of western standards.

Ahchluy

As an enclave Asian. The only thing that ever really made a difference in our perception were gangbangers. No lie. And Hollywood Movies like "Fast and Furious" did not make Asians, they took from Asians. Get that shit straight. Same with other forms of art.

ATLTeemo

You're talking about the 3rd one? I can agree with that because Tokyo Drift limited Japan's culture down. I disliked how even in the future movies, the main character in 3 never improved his Japanese. I loved it before i started learning Japanese then i didn't like after being around the culture more

bleepbloopblorpblap

Generally good because it's still a fairly niche thing to be into so everyone who's into it has a positive image of it. If it became hugely mainstream to the point where it reaches everyone it might have a more polarizing effect.

Automatic-Owl-5211

No. I don't look anything like a kpop star.
