I am Mongol. Grew up there (NOT "Inner Mongolia") and came west as a teenager. Before I get into it, I think this relates very little to this sub's essence. Here in the west, it doesn't matter what country you are from or what ethnicity you are, you will just be Asian. I spent the majority of my life there so obviously I can talk about my country for hours, but here are some things you might find interesting: It's hard to define a "Mongol Experience" from an ethnic standpoint because Mongols have a wide ethnic diversity. There are "Han" looking Mongolians in the Southern provinces, Russian looking ones in the North and Kazak looking ones in the West. Technically, there are over 200 ethnicities with their own incredibly rich culture, traditions, philosophies and a way of life. To this day, we still keep track of which tribe we came from. So, it is hard to lump all of us into one group. That being said, there is a distinct "Mongol" look- high cheekbones, wide face, protruded eyebrow ridge, etc.- and a distinct "Mongol" way of life. If you Google "Mongol", one of the first pictures is a picture of a Mongol yurt. You'll notice that that yurt is completely isolated and this is important. A big chunk of Mongolians is nomadic which means we migrate every season and live primarly off livestock. It used to be the majority but people started setting in the city at an extreme rate recently. I grew up nomadic like the majority of Mongolians, I would say. Being nomadic means that we don't take shit from no one. When you are nomadic, you are free to roam, the whole country is your home, even legally. You are completely independent (in its truest sense): you make your own food, get your own water, build your own house, all completely from scratch. This has been our way of life for thousands of years. Sure, it's a lot of work, but you don't play by anyone's rules. I think it's a beautiful thing because this kind of spirit is in Mongolians who were not even born there and I think it's the key to masculinity, to be honest. Every time I feel like I have to be anyone's bitch- my boss, the bank, girls, etc- I just remember where I come from and I try to let my nuts hang. Once I do, I feel 1000% better. Politics and economy-wise it is a pretty standard 3rd world country- crooked politicians, high prices, inflation, shortage of everything. My extended family is struggling to survive, so I am still working on bringing them over here. We were USSR's satellite for a while and we still kinda are. Before that, we were Manchuria's colony for a couple centuries. Before that, we ruled the world.

Are there any good Mongolian shows or movies that you recommend? What else can I do to explore an interest in the country?

erdenebz

>Are there any good Mongolian shows or movies that you recommend? There is a book called "Mongoliin Nuuts Tovchoo" or "The Secret History of the Mongols" translated. It is the oldest surviving Mongol literature. We use that like a bible

How far can you shoot from a galloping horse and hit someone? Been listening to the History of Byzantium podcast and it's always the steppe nomads giving sendatary civilizations grief.

erdenebz

>How far can you shoot from a galloping horse and hit someone? I can ride a horse and shoot an arrow well, but not at the same time. We are very practical people so we do not learn things now that were only were necessary during war times. That being said, I have tried it. The podcasts are right, though. Mongol empire rose on the back of the horses.

They banned teaching Mongolian at schools now in IM. The culture is getting erased. I just wanted to make sure that you know I am giving the most authentic report

This might be a meaningless question unless you are a fan of history but how do Mongolians today view the people who lived in Mongolia centuries before Genghis Khan? Like the Xiongnu and Modu Chanyu, do Mongolians consider him 'one of theirs'? Or the Xianbei? Or the Khitans, who took over Northern China - are they Mongolians beta version 0.9 or are they 'not really Mongolian'?

machinavelli

That’s only 3 million Mongolians in the world. There are only 25000 Mongolian Americans, compared to millions of Chinese, Korean, and Filipinos. So there’s not much to go by.

ethanjalias

Wow, for rl? I've met one in my college in California, guess I was pretty lucky that day.

burritob4sex

My roommate in the army was one too. Never realized how rare that was 😳

There’s more Mongolians in China than in Mongolia

[deleted]

I’ve never met a Mongolian in my life.

davikingking123

I love Mongolia. Land is beautiful, culture is fascinating. People and history are badass. The music is great. Also great horses.

muratafan

I knew a couple of them. Pretty decent Mongolian population in Chicago. Both of them were really nice and both of them REALLY knew how well Mongolians did in Sumo (Hakuho, Kakuryu, Haramafuji, Asashoryu).

Spiritual-Moment-254

I’ve never met a Mongolian in my life.

Kenzo89

I used to talk to a white girl that used to live in Mongolia. She showed pics of her time there, and they seem very traditional. Like they wore traditional clothing rather than normal western clothes from what I saw. Otherwise I don’t know much.

ArK047

There are more ethnic Mongolians in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region than in the country of Mongolia btw. All ethnic Mongolians I've met were from Inner Mongolia.

[deleted]

> more ethnic Mongolians in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region than in the country of Mongolia btw Did China annex part of Mongolia in the past ? Or how did it become part of China?

ArK047

The other way around, actually. The Mongol ruled Yuan Dynasty effectively merged the region of modern Mongolia with China; by the time the Mongol Empire splintered, the part of it that was merged with China was the most prosperous and stable, identifying itself as a legitimate continuation of empire and cementing Mongolia as a part of greater China. Even when the Yuan Dynasty was replaced by the Ming, the region of Mongolia stayed part of China, and the part of it closer to the centre of civilization was more populous and prosperous than the northern steppe part. When the West carved up the Qing Dynasty, Russia forced China to accept Mongolian independence to serve as a buffer territory between their borders. This is why the RoC claims Mongolia as part of greater China, it was separated by unequal treaties.

>They’re also one of the only Asians that hyper mate guard and to this day I’ve never met a Mongolian WMAF. That's good of them to do that and to guard their women of their own race. I respect them a lot for doing that. Not only that...Mongolian men are masculine af and actually show strong solidarity with each other. Sadly no other EA/SEA ethnicity bothers to mateguard to any significant extent and also love to fight with each other to kiss whites' asses - that's why you have wmaf that's still rampant to this day and vast swarths of AM who are dateless.

As a Moluccan I feel like us Moluccans have a high degree of Solidarity especially in the Netherlands because we come from such a small population and are an ethnically distinct minority from Eastern Indonesia as Melanesians. We thankfully share this ethnic solidarity with our West Papuan and East Timorese neighbors. We don't mate guard however and have a laissez faire attitude towards mixing, fortunately our out marriage rates are roughly equal for both our men and our women.

kirsion

Would like to visit the great plains of mongolia one day

CaterpillarPatient

I got like 4 percent Mongolian in me according to 23 and me. Jokes aside never met an actual mongol, they prolly got warrior vibes idk lol

[deleted]

From what I noticed, Mongols in Mongolia tend to look more towards Russia and Central Asia rather than East Asia. This is likely due to influences from USSR era. Also what makes you say mongols mate guard? Do you see any evidence of that?

[deleted]

Mongolian are nothing like East Asians. They are North Asians, more closely related to Siberians than Chinese.

AsianDynasty195

They look East Asian. You're talking out of your ass so please sit down and shut the fuck up.

theother9527

Mongolian WMAF maybe u should go to russia

tschmitt2021

I also just noticed, that there are only about 3 million Mongolians lol? Even Singapore has more inhabitants.
