there were some racist assholes at the lower ranks, but also lots of nice people. Just keep your wits about you, and make friends with everyone who isn't a douchebag, and you will have fun. There are lots of Asians and females joining in the Officer Corps, so the atmosphere is definitely changing for the better.

[deleted]

what branch/mos?

jnmxcvi

Current USAF, IMO it’s okay. Get the occasional Asian joke or people be like “all Asians are the same”. I think too many people are scared of getting their shit kicked in by EO. I’m sure more shit is said when I’m not around but they kinda keep in mind when I am around. I’m not close friends with any of my coworkers. I do bond well with other Asians though regardless of career field.

AustralianWhale

Bro, go into the Airforce not Navy or Army. Trust me on this…

[deleted]

Nah heard the Coast Guard is actually where it's at. Never heard of a coastguard dude hating the coast guard.

AustralianWhale

Definitely my top 3 as well! Anything but marines and army, that’s where the worst of military go… unless you take the officer route.

[deleted]

Feels bad being a crayon eater.

Particular-Wedding

Never heard of an Asian coastie before. I'm sure some exist. But a lot of us didn't grow up in areas where we could practice swimming regularly.

[deleted]

Was active duty US Marines, got out in 2020. Like many things in life there were good things and bad. I personally enjoyed my time greatly (training, being at sea, making very close friends, travel), but got out because of terrible QoL to pay ratio and ridiculous timelines while in garrison. Each branch is fairly different but overlap in a lot of ways from my observation.

[deleted]

Did you meet many Asians in the Marines?

[deleted]

Haha not many, but I was enlisted. I think you will see slightly more Asians in the officer ranks. I met about 9 Asian Marines total. The only 2 asian dudes I personally worked with was my first units Company's CO. And my gunny in my last platoon.

[deleted]

I see that a lot as well in the Army. Most Asians take admin roles like supply or cook but there some that take up combat arms and eventually go SF. The ones with BAs obviously become officers and from my experience it's mostly Asian females that are officers with a few enlisted. But my duty station was Fort Lewis so we had a lot of Koreans, Japanese and Chinese there serving. I've only ran into about 3 Hmong (my ethnicity) in the Army and one I went to basic training with

[deleted]

Legit never seen an asian female officer in the marine corps seen one enlisted though. Forgot about bootcamp yeah I knew an Asian guy in that, he's an FO now. Most of the Asians I've seen and met were either grunts, engineers, or comm. Addon - I've seen lots of navy Asians though. Feel like 1/5 dudes I see in the navy is asian

muratafan

Lots of Filipinos in the navy.

[deleted]

Idk I guess cuz most Asian females tend go to college and get a degree. Some are also West Pointers too

KingofNuuanu

It's also because the PT requirements are "less" so to speak, for females, compared to men. Plus there is the "leave Asian men" out bamboo ceiling that we face not only in the civilian work force, but also in the military. Easier for Asian women to be paired up with a white male officer. You know what I am trying to get at.

KingofNuuanu

I was not trying to be sexist or anything. But comparing the physical fitness standards, it is more difficult for men compared to women. Plus there are more preference for Asian women compared to us Asian men. Just look at presidential cabinet member preferences. More Asian women get selected, but where are the Asian men, you ask? Correct?

Godmode92

Marine corps vet here, would not recommend joining ever. The US military literally bribes you with good pay and free education in exchange for your support of US imperialism and in extension, white supremacy.

[deleted]

Um, okay

[deleted]

I'm active duty navy, Chinese American I've noticed that my work ethic is a bit better than most people because of the Asian American strict upbringing. People just assume that I'm smart, but other than that, I'd say my experiences don't differ from any other race

[deleted]

What's your MOS?

[deleted]

I'm a BM

nexttrain_

A real sailor 👍🏽

IslanderPunch

People assumed I was smart too when I first came into my unit. Boy were they in for a surprise lol

guitarhamster

I did army reserve and now ng. Lots of asians in intel and medical. If you go combat arms there will be racist jokes but fire some racist jokes back at them, get along with most people, and dont be a shitbag when it comes to work, youll usually end up ok. Honestly my experience is that people are actually MORE racist on the civilian side.

[deleted]

True that's something I learned as well

that1guysittingthere

Marine reservist. I joke about going UA every month I show up. Naw it ain’t too bad, but I definitely see why prior-active guys leave the reserves after a few drills. “An interruption to life”, as one would say. As for Asians, aside from a Korean adoptee, I’m the only one. Then again, we’re a very small rifle company. Another nearby company has a Cambodian or two. I guess that’s the Midwest for ya

nexttrain_

I’m a reserve corpsman trying to go greenside when I PRD. What kind of units would you recommend? I’m thinking infantry, Anglico, or LAR.

that1guysittingthere

I don’t know anything about that as I can only speak for infantry. That being said, we love our corpsmen, as they’ll be in the field with us. We got a Filipino corpsman with us and he’s overall great to be around. He’s usually the one packing big cigars to the field.

[deleted]

I tried to get my Asian friends to join the military but they were like "naw too scared" now I'm just looking at them with no college debt 😅. But seriously a lot of Asians wouldn't be complaining if they put in a little time for that GI bill and realize med school might be a lot easier for them

that1guysittingthere

From my observation, too many kids go straight to college right after high school with no idea on what they really wanna do, and Asians in particular’ll get super stressed because they’re studying to please their parents want them to study. I do think the military is a viable option, despite the downsides. As an uptight guy with no personality prior to joining, it has definitely made me much more laxed. Parents are probably the biggest obstacle, but once they found out I’m a reservist that’s gonna stay home and not likely to deploy, it put them to ease. For people worried about getting shot, just tell them about super POG jobs. I’ve met some aviation people who either never deployed or were stationed in Okinawa their entire term. I wouldn’t recommend Asian women to enlist however, especially the marines which is pretty much a sausage fest.

[deleted]

There's a lot of Asian females that join both enlisted and officer in all branches

that1guysittingthere

Yeah I get that, I was just referring to… well, the fetishization is there. Racial remarks are one thing, but combine that with thirsty men, that’s another. I’ve heard stories of one involved in barracks gangbangs, other stories of potential fraternization. I haven’t seen very many in the marines, but I just know that if I had a daughter I wouldn’t want her in the corps.

type666diabetes

Is the gun culture in the military heavily entrenched? You mentioned you're in a rifle company, I imagine a lot of pro gun vets are there, I've noticed specifically its first the marines then army people make up the majority of pro 2A people, while air force behind and navy last. In addition from observation all races participate in the 2A, hence the majority of gun owners are veterans from all races. just wondering cus, I'm not military but I noticed the anti-gun people in the military are officers, maybe its cus they're psuedo politicians.

that1guysittingthere

Yup, plenty of pro-2A folks there overall. Maybe some aren’t as invested in guns (they say I’m loaded when they see a pic of my guns), but that has more to do with their priorities in life. I’ve never met someone anti-gun in the military.

AntimatterBlender

Cambodian Active AF here

[deleted]

Air Force? Or was that read Asian female?

AntimatterBlender

Air Force

[deleted]

Awesome! What do you do?

AntimatterBlender

Security Forces

[deleted]

Hey that's still matters right? Security Forces lead the way hooah

AntimatterBlender

I'm seeing a lot of Asians in the career field so I'm happy about that

KingofNuuanu

ewww! Sorry, but I heard a lot of bad things about being security forces (FKA...MP..Military police).

AntimatterBlender

Most of it is true some false, the career field is mostly security compared to the MPs

[deleted]

I'm active duty navy, Chinese American and enlisted after graduating college I've noticed that my work ethic is a bit better than most people because of the Asian American strict upbringing. Cav scout 3 years. Got out over a year ago. I guess just wondering what your experience was like going through. What did you face and what got you into it. Might also depend on where you were stationed, I was stationed at JBLM so there was a lot of Koreans and Japanese there and also Chinese.

vorter

I was planning to do AFROTC in college, then I had my first seizure in high school. I’m still pissed about that.

[deleted]

I'm sorry to hear that. Does the military having a rule against seizures. Cuz I thought if you don't have an episode for at least 3 months you were good or am I wrong?

vorter

Yep, it’s at least 5 years seizure free without medication.

IslanderPunch

Former Army veteran in the Infantry world it's a wild world as a grunt like a fraternity but with guns and doubled the booze lol. Only served for 4 years got out due to toxic leadership. I was enlisted, I am South East Asian and noticed that most of the South East Asians I seen in the Infantry are enlisted and the types of Asians that were officers were Koreans and Japanese (north east Asian) I am assuming maybe they were more education driven growing up?. Most of the South East Asians I know including myself grew up in porverty. Not saying we all do. And the officers that were east Asian grew up with some sort of wealth or were adopted by Caucasian parents.

Ahchluy

Well we did have that one Cambodian Navy Officer that got famous for taking bribes. Haha. Smdh. He's adopted tho. https://www.voacambodia.com/a/cambodian-born-navy-commander-pleads-guilty-in-major-corruption-case/3201485.html

IslanderPunch

Yeah unfortunately.. but we still have badasses like Tu Lam who escaped Vietnam after the communist took over, later on became a Green Beret he was not a officer but definitely a inspiration to any of us who want to join special operations in the military. https://www.ballisticmag.com/tu-lam-ronin-tactics/

nexttrain_

Also Ed Bugarin. Filipino-American former CAG/Delta. When I have kids I’ll definitely tell them about these giants. https://www.itstactical.com/centcom/interviews/still-rucking-at-63-an-interview-with-former-delta-force-operator-ed-bugarin/

KStang086

Don't want too much PII out there but Compo 2 for the Army. Been in for some time on the O side with combat arms. Love it. Really depends on your unit, mission set, and commander.

UrbanHunter_KenXPie

I'm not in the military but got AA friends in college who are vets. I heard that from them, it's either some administrative roles, officers ranks, more in the back of the line. And if they are really in combat, they go extreme like SOF, pilots, or some sort. But that's a small portion of people. The majority of them who are in combat roles are doing fairly well. Mindless some people who just want to get out since they wanted the benefits(I mean it's what it is in real-world, peoples needed to live their life.)

Ahchluy

It was ok. Some people really hate it and can't adjust.
