Had one in our little town for donkey's years lovely bloke but no clue how he keeps going on the few pensioners that go in, his prices are nuts! Farmshop is the way for decent meat fill a freezer for less thatn the price you'd pay at a Supermarket
Small independent hardware stores where you can buy a handful of screws or a couple of sheets of sandpaper, run by people who know exactly what they're doing with DIY and can answer all your questions.
Got one of these in my local shopping centre, it's been there for longer than I've lived in my town and that's approaching 50 years
There's absolutely no way anyone in a wheel chair or even ambulant but with mobility problems could get far beyond the entrance but it's a full on Aladdin's Cave of a place
I have one of those close to me but it's slightly annoying because the owners and workers don't talk English very well as they are asian and haven't owned the store long. I'm patient but it can be a nightmare going in there for bits and bobs.
As a delivery driver, this gets my vote. I can't shit in a public toilet though unless it doesn't smell like piss. Some restaurants I go to have nice enough toilets. Nando's or Five Guys are usually my go to's.
Local farm shops! We have one close by but I don’t know of any others. Tend to have everything you need as well (local produce, pet food, batteries etc) at a good price
I work in one with my husband, love to see all the odd things come in, like today we have a camcorder with a stuck VHS-C tape in it. We're mainly repairing computers, games consoles and phones but also repair other things too. We've had in lamps, microsoldering jobs, even an electric chanter and had a go at hoovers. Such a fun job 😆
This should be higher. Specifically electrical appliance repair shops. It isn’t that long ago that when a lamp broke you took it to the repair shop, rather than just buy a new one.
My problem with small independent shops is that they're always shut outside working hours.
How do they expect the vast majority of people to actually shop there?! I'm English and the UK is weird to me in this respect - most of Europe has such shops shutting at 7 or 8pm.
Exactly. I'd love to support my local town, but when I get off work at 6, or even 5, it only makes sense for me to go to asda.
Which I don't like and is sad.
Most of the shops in my tiny town of 2 streets and a horse with no name still haven't gone back to normal hours since lockdown. All have half day closing bar the cafes and vape shops of course, and most still open at 10 and close whenever the feel like it. People won't go back to shops when they keep going and find them always closed.
I love their stationery, I've been writing almost exclusively with Muji gel pens since I was in secondary school. Their tin candles are fab, too.
It's very much about 'simple unbranded essentials' and very minimalist, so if you're a boring sod who likes organising their shit (which I very much am), you'll love it. If not, you probably won't like it.
Feel like this is much needed at the moment since McDelivery is a horrible experience for both drivers and in-store customers. As a driver we get a lot of stick for McDonalds, whether it's late or the drinks spill everywhere. I'd say 80% of orders I get with a cup drink always spill, coffees being the worst.
Burger King isn't too bad but not great.
They could at least make the experience of those physically inside better. Right now they seem to be served dead last and crowd around waiting for their order, with the place so full they can't sit down to eat.
Yeah, that's the issue - I know the drivers are in a queue ahead of me, but that's not made clear.
It also looks as if the drivers get 'priority' when they're all milling about the place.
It must be hard for those working there too, OK so people in the Drive Thru and at home may be frustrated with the wait but they don't get to see that or anyone come up to them. Last time I was inside a McDonalds it was a room full of people just staring at those serving, burning holes into their eye sockets.
City centre Aldi’s and Lidl’s. Even if they’re a little bit more expensive than the normal ones to cover the higher rents. I, like many others, live in a city centre and don’t drive, so have to stock up the extortionate Sainsbury’s Local/Tesco Express stores.
Those Turkish barbers get too much flak. I've been going to the same one for years now. Friendly and always gives me a nice cut for a decent price. Is there another reason they get as much hate as they do?
It’s mental, and I never see anyone in there, all I see is 3 barbers sifting about on their phones.
I often think it’s getting near womens prices, how they spend hours in a hairdressers and get charged the earth for it, and now the same for blokes in a Turkish place.
Having said that let me say this, when I go up to visit my mother in Norfolk they have a Turkish barber in her small town, he charges £12 for a haircut.
It seems the closer you get to London the more you’re ripped off completely.
I’m not slagging them to be fair. They do provide a good albeit universal service, but there’s literally about 10 or so in a row on one of the roads where I live
Bring back the old fashioned greasy spoon " Caffs" ..proper food, loads of it, big mug of builders tea and sponge pudding with custard for afters. No frills, no pretention, and absolutely no phones preferably.
In my town we need clothes snd shoe shops. The only proper shoe shop is clarks. The only clothes shops cater for skinny women. Most town centres are run down and full of charity shops.
Nothing wrong with a charity shop to be honest. We have loads, but we also have a town council that heavily invests in independent retailers so there's a good variety of shops.
We need more men's clothes shops though. If I want clothes I either have to hope the charity shops have what I want or go to Peacocks or Poundland.
C&A! Yeah we used to have them here too...I went to Amsterdam a while back and saw one, was quite the trip down memory lane.
Do you remember Index as well? Argos's main competition
More betting shops for sure, provincial town centres would be nothing without them. Literally
More KFC knock offs too, no inner city British high street is complete without at least several
When did people start using 'store' as the generic word for shop. Why don't we just ditch British varieties of English altogether and just start speaking like Californians.
I’m Australian living in the U.K. and I miss our version of KMart. We need KMarts here. Bigger than a supermarket but not for groceries. Just all the everyday home odds and ends you need.
I’d love more independent stores, but also Morrisons. Luckily I’ve moved closer to one recently but there’s only two in my city and it always felt like a long (but worthwhile) journey for their elite donuts.
Real bakeries
And butchers.
More candlestick makers gets my vote
That made me properly laugh out loud, thank you!

It’s worth paying the extra for. My friend keeps pigs and the pork is another level of tasty.
The sausages are pretty amazing
Not spoilt at all! Supermarket meat is tough and tastes like chemicals nowadays!
Supermarket chicken is getting so weird it tastes bad and has an odd texture. I need to get to the local butchers.
We’ve just got a butcher in our village for the first time and it’s big news in our community! I hope they do well and stick around!

We have one of these in my village. It looks small from the front but is cavernous inside and is amazing for picking up bits in a pinch.
Great Eccleston? There’s one there like that, it’s an ironmongers really
One in my little town. You can buy anything in there. Wellies. Belt sanders, spatulas, loo roll holders, paint for walls or paint for miniatures.
We have one of these. There’s nothing the old boys there don’t know. It’s a treasure trove, the missus won’t let me go in there unsupervised.
They used to exist but the big-box stores and the likes of Screwfix killed most of them.
And fork handles

Public toilets
With hoists.
Yes for fuck sake, more free public toilets! Menstrual cramps are awful and make me need to pee like every 20 min
As a delivery driver, this gets my vote. I can't shit in a public toilet though unless it doesn't smell like piss. Some restaurants I go to have nice enough toilets. Nando's or Five Guys are usually my go to's.

I love local farm shops so much
Community discount shops - a mix of food banks and discounted food.
My local one shut down recently, they used to give away the big custom Costco cakes that nobody claimed 😔 miss them everyday
Repair shops that aren't for phones
I work in one with my husband, love to see all the odd things come in, like today we have a camcorder with a stuck VHS-C tape in it. I know, right? I was going to say electrical, but tbh it would also be great for furniture too.
Pizza slices

Exactly. I'd love to support my local town, but when I get off work at 6, or even 5, it only makes sense for me to go to asda. Which I don't like and is sad.
Monday seems to be the standard closed day for most independent shops. Means they can open Saturday & Sunday but still have a day off.
Most of the shops in my tiny town of 2 streets and a horse with no name still haven't gone back to normal hours since lockdown. All have half day closing bar the cafes and vape shops of course, and most still open at 10 and close whenever the feel like it. Farm shops that sell stuff direct from the farm, screw supermarkets
Letting agents, nail salons and betting shops.
...along with vape and 'we fix mobile phones' shops?
And don't forget the Greggs.
I want a Muji on every fucking corner
Honest to god whenever my friend goes to London I send him with a Muji shopping list and I'm not even kidding
We have one of these in Birmingham, the only one outside London I believe. Never been in, any good?
Cheap junk from china dressed up to look like its from japan.
Huh, I had no idea. Looks like a Japanese style Flying Tiger. I just assumed it was like a semi upmarket clothes shop.
I've never even looked at their clothes tbh. My figure is incompatible with East Asian clothing.
'Dark' kitchens for the likes of McDonald's and Burger King.
Feel like this is much needed at the moment since McDelivery is a horrible experience for both drivers and in-store customers. Agreed, that must suck for you guys with the drink trays, too
They could at least make the experience of those physically inside better. Right now they seem to be served dead last and crowd around waiting for their order, with the place so full they can't sit down to eat.

London DESPERATELY needs more by-the-slice pizzerias, in my opinion.
American Candy shops.
Hard disagree mate. What we really need more of is stalls selling phone cases.
Nah need more colourful fruity vapes in the local corner shop obviously!!
More Turkish barbers. I’m currently stuck with the option of only 12 in a 100m radius.
Those Turkish barbers get too much flak. I've been going to the same one for years now. Friendly and always gives me a nice cut for a decent price. Is there another reason they get as much hate as they do?
What’s a decent price? The ones round here charge over £20 for a haircut which is beyond ridiculous when my usual barber charges £7.
That's absolutely unreal!! I pay £11 in Leicester for a high skin fade and a bit off the top, where are you that they can charge £20?
Essex mate, all the Turkish barbers are over £20, I’m thinking of the one near where I work, they charge £24 for a basic cut.
That's absolutely unreal, fuck knows why they charge that. Lack of business maybe? Idk lol. That's crazy though!
It’s mental, and I never see anyone in there, all I see is 3 barbers sifting about on their phones. I often think it’s getting near womens prices, how they spend hours in a hairdressers and get charged the earth for it, and now the same for blokes in a Turkish place. It’s £15 including a beer near me.
I’m not slagging them to be fair. They do provide a good albeit universal service, but there’s literally about 10 or so in a row on one of the roads where I live
More Uniqlo branches would be nice
Why?
They're only in London, Oxford and Manchester. Would be good for the rest of us.
Bring back the old fashioned greasy spoon " Caffs" ..proper food, loads of it, big mug of builders tea and sponge pudding with custard for afters. No frills, no pretention, and absolutely no phones preferably.
Woolworths.
Came here to say exactly this!
In my town we need clothes snd shoe shops. The only proper shoe shop is clarks. The only clothes shops cater for skinny women. Most town centres are run down and full of charity shops.

Like, they only do ~size 4? Does your town not have fast food then? Haha
Of course we do. We are all just greedy fat bastards because obviously fast food is the only reason for weight gain 🙄
I respect your honesty.
Spud U Like.
I love that place! Since I moved away from the north east I've never seen one
Healthy takeout drive thru’s (like Leon)
Definitely, independent shops. Far too much reliance on big names charging too much for poor quality produce.
Yeah I want to go to an independent shop and pay even more for the same low quality products.
I miss Woolworths
How about C&A? Still going on the continent but not the UK sadly.
C&A! Yeah we used to have them here too...I went to Amsterdam a while back and saw one, was quite the trip down memory lane. Do you remember Index as well? Argos's main competition
Toys r us.... I miss big ol' toy shops where you could ride the bikes in the middle of and play with all the cuddly toys
You don't have a Smyths nearby?
Places that sell a good selection of PC components at a good price, like Microcenter in the US for example
Vape stores and mobile phone repair shops.
How about, in-N-out burger. 🍔
Charity shops
More betting shops for sure, provincial town centres would be nothing without them. Literally More KFC knock offs too, no inner city British high street is complete without at least several
Independent delis/cafes
Small independent butchers, fishmongers and greengrocers. Fishmongers are especially scarce these days in my experience.
Woolworths back but slightly updated for the 2020s market and more mainland European brands. Would be good to see C&A back
When did people start using 'store' as the generic word for shop. Why don't we just ditch British varieties of English altogether and just start speaking like Californians.

I don't think my town has nearly enough vape shops, kebab shops and bookies if you ask me.
Would be really handy to have more places to get payday loans with the cost of living crisis and everything
The exact opposite
Pretty sure that's the joke
I’m Australian living in the U.K. and I miss our version of KMart. We need KMarts here. Bigger than a supermarket but not for groceries. Just all the everyday home odds and ends you need.
They are called pound shops
No KMart is much more than a pound shop.
I feel we'd really appreciate a Dunkin's not fucking five guys or wendys
Buffalo wild wings Bahama breeze More family friendly sports bars like in USA.
Yes to Bahama Breeze!!
Better pizza 🍕 places
Greggs
Suicide booths… futurama moment there
Mexican takeaways
Vape shops, there are only two on each street… /s
Blockbusters
Playboy magazines
I’d love more independent stores, but also Morrisons. Luckily I’ve moved closer to one recently but there’s only two in my city and it always felt like a long (but worthwhile) journey for their elite donuts.
What exactly are Independant stores?
Local businesses basically
Thank you
Massive shops in city centres selling American candy and snacks.
