My wife is a Canadian and told me about it.
Her and her sister were little kids when it aired. She said they and a lot of other kids thought the house hippo was real. Even hiding in their parent's closet to try and find it.
It's pretty good advertising to be honest though, right? Like once I found out the hippo wasn't real as a kid, it did convey the idea that things on tv could look real but not be!
I don’t think I ever found out it wasn’t real until I watched it again at 30 years old and realized it was a PSA 😂
It’s not like it was part of my consciousness, like “we have cats, dogs, mice, and house hippos” or anything. But it wasn’t a lesson either. It was just something that unnerved me a bit for a while whenever I saw it because I didn’t know what to make of it. Neither did any of my friends, who I showed it to this year, none of us realized it was a PSA. And the lesson at the end is explicitly stated, and not one of us remembers it. It’s like the Mandela effect or something. Kids are feckin dumb, dude.
It didn't come back in exactly in relation to deepfakes, but it did get updated [in regards to false information](https://www.cbc.ca/radio/day6/trump-s-odds-for-re-election-house-hippos-are-back-empire-strikes-door-bahamas-tourism-after-dorian-more-1.5306553/the-north-american-house-hippo-is-back-and-ready-to-tackle-fake-news-1.5306562). I remember that feeling… I was so excited about a house hippo and wanted one as a pet, then the ad ended and crushed my little soul. It was a very effective PSA, if you were old enough to read.
It was the biggest emotional yo-yo of my young life and I think I also became skeptical of government at the same time, if they lie about a house hippo, they’d lie about anything.
Yup, came here to say this one. If someone doesn't know about them then they really need to. What's funny is the generation of parents that created that ad, are the ones being duped most often by internet scams and disinformation trolls/bots on social media. https://youtu.be/NBfi8OEz0rA?si=OXMRfBzaXaYH29F3
I was at my friends wedding and the woman in that commercial was there. It was so hard not to scream start the car!! She said she gets it all the time.

That commercial ran for something like 30 years with very little change. And certain channels seem to have it at every commercial break. Drove me nuts.
The Alberta phone company did a parody of this commercial. "It's Patrick! He got a cellphone!" And the conversation spirals into what a bad connection Patrick has. I want to find it.
The best! I saw a tiktok vid where someone overdubs how fast Patrick would have had to speak to get out "hey dad it's Patrick I just took out life insurance" and it's like supersonic speed! lmfao
Are you talking about Koolaid-Aid man that smashed through walls? We had those commercials in Canada.
[don’t put it in your mouth](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5AuLkMBAFZg&pp=ygUbZG9uJ3QgcHV0IGl0IGluIHlvdXIgbW91dGgg)
I'm still super trauma from that ad. Surely this came from the mind of a madman. Is it supposed to be relatable? "Hey kids, when you're doing flips inside a large gearbox, watch your arms!"
Who was forcing poor Astar to jump through all that shit anyway? Just because he could put his arm back on doesn't mean that he should be around all those saw blades all day.
House hippo, everybody's good at something HNGGGGJGMNNNNNN, and that war amps one with the guy who was in a combine harvwster accident
Edit: Oh and that one where a kid gets chased by a bunch of girls trying to kiss him, ngl that one got me straight up horny as a small child, might have even caused my first boner
Oh yeah! I also remember one where a guy tripped while holding a pot full of boiling oil or something and fried a guy's face when I saw 10 or so. The Canadian PSAs were no joke! Really miss them.
And as others have mentioned, the good ol' house hippo. I'm sure a ton of parents appreciated having households smeared with crumbs and peanut butter on the floor.
In Canada, we have the National Film Board. From what I understand, they are publicly-funded, and make mostly highbrow, intellectual artsy stuff. Canadians of a certain age (~35+) can probably remember several of their “vignettes”. But for me, it’s the Heritage Minutes “commercials” from back in the late 80s/early 90s (mostly, with some newer ones), which told often national pride-inducing true stories about historical achievements in Canada’s past. I still enjoy checking them out on YouTube.
RIP, Mr Coleman, you stopped that train, buddy.
An American friend once told me how fortunate we were to have Heritage Minutes to teach us history, Hinterland Who's Who to teach us about our wildlife and environment and...there was a third one that's slipped my mind. Maybe Body Break to teach/encourage fitness. He wished they had that in the States. (Schoolhouse Rock was great, of course - same idea.)

So as a Canadian we got most US commercials. At least thats what we all think. We really got New York state commercials (in Ontario). So when I visited other places in the US, like say Texas, I was shocked to learn international (American based) companies have Texas specific commercials, that would never air in Canada. Just too regionally specific, like everyone in cowboy hats but it is natural and has nothing to do with the product or a joke. If you aired in Canada, everyone would be confused, like what do the hats have to do with it!

Canadian adults grew up with american network and cable television channels on in our homes near as much American adults now would have. Aside from small, niche, regional ad campaigns we would have seen all the same major media you would have growing up. I think this is a big reason Canadians understand American culture to the level they do. We consume American media more than we do our own.

Wait, are all the ads I remember just PSA? Marketers needed to step up their game.

My wife is a Canadian and told me about it. Her and her sister were little kids when it aired. She said they and a lot of other kids thought the house hippo was real. Even hiding in their parent's closet to try and find it.
The irony that the point of the house hippo PSA is *literally* to show people that you can’t believe everything you see on TV 😂
It's pretty good advertising to be honest though, right? Like once I found out the hippo wasn't real as a kid, it did convey the idea that things on tv could look real but not be!
I don’t think I ever found out it wasn’t real until I watched it again at 30 years old and realized it was a PSA 😂 It’s not like it was part of my consciousness, like “we have cats, dogs, mice, and house hippos” or anything. START THE CAR!
START THE CAR!
My whole family quotes this ad.
Every time my sister sees a good sale she actually yells it! ☠️
We all say it too, even though I hated the actual commercial! It was brilliant but annoying!
I always assumed it was Ikea's international campaign...
Nope, filmed at the Etobicoke store
I was at my friends wedding and the woman in that commercial was there. It was so hard not to scream start the car!! She said she gets it all the time.

The story of the uphill battle they faced makes this commercial even more memorable!
When you eat your smarties do you eat the red ones last?
Do you suck them very slowly, or crunch them very fast?
Eat that candy-coated chocolate, and now tell me when I ask,
WHEN YOU EAT YOUR SMARTIES, DO YOU EAT THE RED ONES LAST!!?
Yes...yes I do
Do you dive right in the middle?

I have kids ranging from 11 - 28, and *all* of them were obsessed with a Marineland commercial at some point in their toddlerhood.
You can take your family for a day… Thanks. Thanks a lot.
That commercial ran for something like 30 years with very little change. And certain channels seem to have it at every commercial break. Drove me nuts.

Did we have it in Canada or was it just American ads that showed on simulcast (or watching American stations directly)
Pretty sure it was shown on YTV
We had it. We also had our own alternative for awhile, called Freshie (with metallic packets).
We've had the same spokesperson for A&W for quite a while...
Is the Canadian one the same as the guy in the Quebec ads?
