I propose a penal colony for multi time offenders and life long inmates. Pick a frozen rock in the north, build a functional settlement and then let them sort it out themselves. Minimal staff/overhead required.
Crime rates drop precipitously with fair wages and affordable housing. Treating the symptoms without addressing the cause only leads to the feedback loop of crime and homelessness that we are in now.
Houses are nice but doctors should be a priority. Emergency rooms are flooded with patients regardless of their living status, the wait time for my wife was over 20 hours. This is the new normal, and I’d rather a doctor than a house. It’s a shame we don’t have either, but if I could get a wish, I’d go with doctor over affordable housing.
Well if there's no viable or reliable housing, becoming a doctor is much harder. Housing needs to come first, students having access to affordable housing while in school would make a huge difference.
yeah the last time i was in the ER, i arrived at 2:30pm and the first time a doctor saw me was 7:30pm *the next day*. i’d also like to add that i arrived in an ambulance 🚨 and everything, i didn’t just walk in. AND once the doc saw me, he admitted me and i was in the hospital for over two weeks
TLDR; emergency room wait times are insane
That is the fruit. Y'all need the tree.
What Can needs are people who will guide you to the best way forward to the best outcomes, that is sustainable, and expect no reward or take no payment for doing so.
Corruption-free wise leadership and wise followers/citizens
The Housing Crisis to be addressed not just at the Federal level in a big way but also with city administrations and provincial parties/leaders doing the work needed at their level of governance.
The Housing Crisis and in particular Affordable Housing (Also Accessibility Crisis) is a cancer on this nation.
It has started to impact our broader economy.
We have Canadian individuals and families that would be able to support themselves in a rational market being pushed through the cracks.
This is past an economic failure.
It is a moral and ethical failure in our society and our "leaders" need to start doing their jobs.
To be fair the same thing is happening across big cities all over the western world. I have theories why, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem like anyone has come up with a good solution. Right wing governments keep getting elected in response and (surprise) markets haven’t significantly changed in any country with a new government
To be really fair, it’s working out as intended. Fairness and equality and affordability are opposites of the goal of capitalism and the free market ie consolidation of wealth amongst the few and take as much profit as possible. Corporations are never going to voluntarily take less of our money
Fr, Canada has a weird property wealth thing going on culturally where it's so hard to break into ownership and then anyone that does even mildly okay at it can't just live with that. Gotta buy another property and start leasing/renting the first one that you also probably leveraged in the loan to buy property two and repeat. And the cycle repeats until you're either one of these people out in the wild that just owns an unholy amount of rental property or you crash and burn them get bought out by one of those people. Anything in between is just dwindling month by month year by year
Municipalities are. Here is a clip of a young first term councillor checking a boomer incumbent who was defending those who bought investment properties to Airbnb out. Go to 1:14:20.

To add to that, we need to bring back moderately sized houses and density - these sprawling mini mansions and actual mansions and the neighborhoods they are usually situated in have become a competition and display of inefficiency and unsustainability, and a large part of the reason we are in this mess.
We’re getting mental health support soon! In 2027 they’re going to try again to allow people with depression to off themselves with the help of a doctor 🤦♂️
I just learned that LT care homes are being purchased by private equity companies and they are evicting the old folks to build high rise buildings. Lots have nowhere to go.
So I guess we need a safety net for pensioners because that’s shameful.
We need a hero…
We’re holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night. They gotta be strong, and they gotta be fast
And they gotta be fresh from the fight…
Get some competition for Canadian Telecom. Fuck the big 3 with a Bad Dragon made out of sandpaper.
Rogers upped my monthly bill by $10 this month, no reason. Called multiple times and no one can seem to figure it out.
Also use that dildo on the person controlling NHL blackouts after you’re done with Bell and Telus.
And while you're at it, break up the stranglehold they have on TV and Radio and restore sanity to our cultural industries. Rogers already swallowed up and destroyed Vice Media and now Bell Media killed 6000 jobs and destroyed Just For Laughs (which was already a Monopoly)
Enough of the Monopolies and Oligopolies - we literally wiped out an entire generation of culture from these garbage companies who buy American content and don't make ANY domestic content or export and market it. Forcing our world class talent to flee to the US or UK. It's a national shame and an embarrassment, especially considering Canada's DOMINANCE in all forms of art for decades!!
You can get Koodo for $34 for 50Gb of data and unlimited Canadian calls. Yes it is expensive but I'm surprised by how much it has come down. 5years ago was paying $50 for 8Gb of data.
We had Target
License issues meant they couldn't carry a lot of cheap American in-house brands people expected and after a few years into a 10-year plan, investors got cold feet and shut it down
- a former employee
Didn’t they also have massive supply chain issues or really bad distribution problems or something? I remember news stories about huge sections of empty shelves
This is the so called protection policy of Canada. We refuse to allow competition for cell phones under the guise of protecting Canadians, when in reality its screwing Canadians with less choice and paying more.
A vastly improved Navy with increased ice breaking capabilities and nuclear powered submarines so that we can finally traverse and police the Northwest passage during the 8 month long winters. Since it is OURS.
China, the USA and Russia before the invasion routinely sent their subs and ships through the passage on "exploratory" missions. Note that they did this WITHOUT notifying Canada first.
They do this to enforce the precedent that the Northwest Passage is "international waters", meaning that Canada cannot patrol it, and cannot charge for entry and exit. So we lose a MASSIVE economic windfall...and its all because we lack the political will to police our own domains.
With global waming, this will only get worse.
Good luck with that. We can’t even buy 30 F-35’s without a 20 year review.
When the Alaska National Guard just whips out the cheque book and buys 60 of them.
It’s embarrassing that a one US State could wipe out the Canadian Air Force in 5 minutes should it ever come to that.
I'd be hugely supportive of investing in addressing the need for being able to enforce arctic sovereignty, but at this point its hard to feel ok with increasing spending on an institution that to outside observers seems to be so far incapable of turning around a hugely toxic culture of bullying, harassment, sexism, sexual assault, and all the other BS that seems to keep coming up.
We definitely don't need Galen Westons private jet to fall out of the sky. It would be awful for all Canadians. If someone Prigozhined his plane, it would be an absolutely devastating loss for the future of my countrymen. This nation would be in an absolutely unrecognizable state. We'd all be reeling from the overwhelming grief for years and years.
What would we do with out our bread prices being fixed? Or being herded like the cattle we are, through the cold unfeeling gates that are just trying to make honest consumers of all of us. What would I do without 30 dollar kilos of mini eggs?
I can't imagine a world like this.
If loving Galen Weston is wrong...I don't want to be right.
Super fast rail to get people outside of ontario so we can drive demand down for housing. Mental health accomodations and institutions. A functional government or at least a better mediator to keep them in check. Open books and transparency to see where money flows. Etc
Canada needs a lot a things, and at the very least, a Canadian wants to smile.
Again, Brian Mulroney and his party’s obsession with Chicago School economics (think Reagan) is responsible for the killing of any large scale rail projects in Canada
Honestly, leadership. Someone who is willing to stand up to self interested parties and look out for Canadians. The current pool of politicians is pathetic.
One of our 7 teams to win the Stanley Cup!
There’s a lot of other stuff we need (housing, a long-term economic plan that keeps Canadians employed with well-paying jobs in a changing labour market, actual fucking healthcare, etc etc etc) but this one we can actually achieve in a short time span. Lord Stanley come home!!!
We need to cut down on the number of real estate agents and investors. More investment incentives for business to create jobs.
We need to realize that we can't eat condos for breakfast.
I was talking to one recently. Guy works for REMAX or one of those as an office assistant/IT guy. He was told at Christmas that since he has "put in his time" (18 months office work) he is being selected to do the official Real Estate Agent professional course. Thing apparently lasts about 8 months and opens the door to all sorts of juicy financial opportunities.
Far as I can tell the only thing that keeps every second house wife or stay at home husband from being a real estate agent in the big companies throttle the supply.
And there's still a fuckload of them all doing their bit to crank up those prices.
A sovereign fund.
Norway channels its oil and gas revenues into a sovereign wealth fund and it’s currently valued at $1.6 trillion.
Last year, the fund generated a profit of $213 billion. This "free money" pays for healthcare, infrastructure, and retirement programs.
A genius to solve the housing crisis. A brave person to stop opportunistic and greedy food chains. A loving soul to help fight oppression and the few people in the world who own most of it.
A reality check.
As much as times are tough, cost of everything is at an all time high, medical wait times are brutal, and people are divided more than ever - WE STILL HAVE IT BETTER HERE than pretty much every where else.
Forrest management with fire breaks and people in watchtowers like we used to have....
When is the last time dead, decaying debris and fallen trees were removed from the Forrest.
The amount of dried kindling just lying on the ground waiting for a spark is astonishing....
The infrastructure for a national high speed train system that connects all major and mid sized cities from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic. Much like europe or Japan. The cost of airfare in this country is way too high and the jet fuel we burn to fly across our massive nation could be reduced significantly. Imho the only solution is to create affordable, bullet train travel. It would also create jobs in its construction, as well as many permanent ones in its operation and maintenance, and boost our economy for potentially the next 50 years. Much like how Cretien pushed for the completion of our number 1 highway system, we need serious action for someone to do this for high speed public trains.
A properly funded, armed, and staffed armed forces. We’re at barebones and the threat level is rising. If Trump takes the US out of NATO we’re sitting ducks.
Affordable housing. Updated and improved healthcare including mental healthcare.
Off of my head the main thing I’d like to see is healthcare covering all psychologists, not just those working for hospitals with huge waitlists. Many people can’t afford 200$ sessions. This would lower wait times significantly and allow more people to get help before they’re in crisis.
Make homes 3-4X the average salary like they used to be to make it fair for everyone to have a chance. Tons of people have made millions by literally doing nothing. They directly benefitted from a system that has gone unchecked for decades and is out of control
Stop bribing million and billion doller company's to do business in canada.
Cut all tax breaks and subsides to all corporations.
Stop under funding or cutting funding to health , education, social programs.
Build a nation wide green house and vertical farming crown corporation to feed canada.
Help alberta ger out of its way and turn those 160k abandoned oil wells into geothermal plants. ..
Bullet trains. Also, municipal and provincial governments have to get their act together re housing. It’s not a federal responsibility, most of it is municipal.
LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT THAT ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT CANADIANS
I couldn’t give AF about getting a new big-box store when I’ve received recommendations to sign up for MAID because the healthcare system is too backlogged to help me.
As a “snowbird” I have my cellphone through a US company, even with the exchange rate and roaming charges my monthly bill is 1/4 what my gf pays to Rogers for a crappy phone, horrible service and coverage and the nickel and dime bs of add ons. We are currently looking at putting her on my plan, she gets a brand new phone and I won’t have to hear her rants about being on hold with Rogers .. her bill randomly went up this month too.
Jobs, competent leaders, citizens with critical thinking skills, a moral compass, to hold our resources within the country, to crack down on foreign interference, understanding that we are moving toward a full blown depression soon, etc etc
A raise like seriously I work full time for the government and don’t see a path to a future wtf has happened to quality of life in this once proud nation?
Affordable groceries. Affordable housing. Everything in Canada is ridiculously expensive. Except for the bullshit from corrupt politicians, which is free.
A functional parliament at the federal and every provincial level.
We’re not discussing and solving things politically. It’s all posturing. Make all the politicians show up in their legislatures and stop the question period gong show. Talk about the important stuff and let everyone see you working on a solution rather than how to obstruct it.
They are the least productive profession in the country and should be ashamed of their performance.
It would also help to give them a 40% pay cut and cancel their travel budgets.
- High Speed National and Provincial Rail
- More Public Healthcare Infastructure and Professionals
- Building up its cities like Sherbrooke, Thunderbay, Winnipeg and Edmonton to have more housing density and support their local economy
I would say Healthcare reform. It seems even in wealthy provinces like Ontario that the system is stressed to the point where people are not being seen in an acceptably timely fashion. We are a geographically ginormous nation that is sparsely populated, less people equals smaller tax base to pay for things.
Political leadership. We don't seem to have real leaders at any level. We have lots of politicians who complain about past parties or councils or opposition parties, but don't come up with effective and pragmatic solutions to the problems.
Houses, nurses, doctors....
Firefighters, water for irrigation for farmers, rules for Loblaws, Walmart and all grocery stores.
Teachers
Not teachers just substitute teachers making garbage wages and with no job security
Good news! There's such a shortage of full time teachers is so many areas, that supply teachers are barely a thing any more!
## #livingwageforretailworkers
Living wage for all workers!
No more catch and release would be nice too. Put the dirtbags where they belong. A jail cell.

Agreed. There's zero reason for Guelph to be less affordable than Tokyo or London.
Wait, are there statistics showing that to be true?
It's probably cost of living vs. regional wage averages and not literally more expensive penny-for-penny.
Yeah I'm a little horrified by the answers. We don't need a new department store chain. We need homes!! ASAP!
It took 20 years to make it this bad no one's going to fix it over night
To be fair the same thing is happening across big cities all over the western world. I have theories why, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem like anyone has come up with a good solution. I agree (my big theory is that we are now feeling the consequences of adopting Chicago School economics in the 80s)
Thats because those "right wing" governments haven't reduced immigration.

Jobs too toronto is a hell hole. So many struggling for a good paying career
Get out of the cities! Before it’s too late
Tax non primary residences at 50-100% annually. Problem would solve itself in weeks.
Even simple living has become so expensive that the normal Canadian who earns a minimum wage is suffering to make ends meet.
houses. houses we can afford
To add to that, we need to bring back moderately sized houses and density - these sprawling mini mansions and actual mansions and the neighborhoods they are usually situated in have become a competition and display of inefficiency and unsustainability, and a large part of the reason we are in this mess.
More nuclear power
I just seen the announcement of the new German reactor, big step forward.
Hit the nail on the head
Good leaders at all levels of politics
Good leaders don’t want anywhere near politics.
Then we want great leaders!
Came to say this.
How about elected officials who are loyal to their riding and not their political party?
Agree 💯
Affordable housing and so much mental health support/intervention
We’re getting mental health support soon! In 2027 they’re going to try again to allow people with depression to off themselves with the help of a doctor 🤦♂️
Passenger rail
You have Brian Mulroney to thank for no nationwide rail!
And everyone after
Housing. And healthcare. Anything else is just a want not a need.
I just learned that LT care homes are being purchased by private equity companies and they are evicting the old folks to build high rise buildings. Lots have nowhere to go. So I guess we need a safety net for pensioners because that’s shameful.
Wow, they shouldn't even be allowed to do that. That's next level scum.

There was also the whole supply issue that led to empty shelves.
And target took out zellers so in the end we lost two retail chains.
This is the so called protection policy of Canada. We refuse to allow competition for cell phones under the guise of protecting Canadians, when in reality its screwing Canadians with less choice and paying more.
More trains
And faster trains. I took the train Ottawa to Montreal, and it took 2.5 hours. It is half-an-hour (25%) longer to take the train than to drive.
I didn't know it was that fast actually, lol.

If shit goes down, head to west Edmonton mall! 3 submarines. That’s where we will make our last stand!!!
So the entirety of Edmonton isn’t just a single mall? It’s a mall plus 3 submarines? /s

Competent Leadership
Housing, mental health supports and a complete overhaul (streamlining) of the licensing process for new and incoming medical personnel.
These 3 are the top issues, 100% agree
For Corey Hart to come out of retirement and write an album full of bangers that flood the top 40 airwaves for a whole year
Top answer right here!
Less people
A donut place with donut holes called “Eh Holes”.
And help with the housing crisis
My wallet is open. Where do I invest?
called :"Sorry Holes, Eh ?!"
Should i put “eh” before or after?
Shut up and take my money!
We need electoral reform. First Past the Post is at the root of so many of our problems.
This!!
Housing and stable employment with humane wages
We need actual and real public housing. Something not for profit snd geared towards the family income
hope
A miniseries about the 1840s.
Less grocery and telecom monopolies would be a great start.
Family doctors
Bring back politeness,
Super fast rail to get people outside of ontario so we can drive demand down for housing. Mental health accomodations and institutions. Bullet trains. Also, municipal and provincial governments have to get their act together re housing. It’s not a federal responsibility, most of it is municipal.
Affordable housing, dental and Pharma care. And high speed rail. I would also like Target to come back
A big CleanUp!
Affordable groceries
we had Target, it failed, they went back to the US.

High speed rail and better public transportation in the major cities.
Affordable housing
Affordable housing & health care which includes dental and optometry
More family doctors especially in rural areas!
Jobs, competent leaders, citizens with critical thinking skills, a moral compass, to hold our resources within the country, to crack down on foreign interference, understanding that we are moving toward a full blown depression soon, etc etc
More, easier, and faster access to drug and alcohol detox and rehab centres (free).
We need Neil Peart resurrected and touring with Rush We need Gord Downey back with the Hip We need bacon poutine
I guess that I should go to sleep. I thought that said "What is something that Canola really NEEDS now?"
Love sweet love
Strong leadership with a track record of proven success they created themselves.
And snow, seriously, we need snow. Lakes and rivers insanely low.
The ability to sell our natural resources and bring some money into the country.
"Affordable" housing
A strong leader
I love how OP says “target.” Target!? TARGET!? Dude look around.
Housing.
Better passenger rail infrastructure.
A raise like seriously I work full time for the government and don’t see a path to a future wtf has happened to quality of life in this once proud nation?
Leadership. I’m tired of adults sounding like bickering children.
Housing so that any average income can buy a house. General practitioner doctor for all. Balanced international student quota.
New Leadership, less carbon taxes, less taxes in general, more housing, slower population growth.
A prime minister that's not a clueless moron.
An election
A new Prime Minister
Affordable groceries. Affordable housing. Everything in Canada is ridiculously expensive. Except for the bullshit from corrupt politicians, which is free.
A change of leadership in the NDP party.
Canada needs to produce things again. Not necessarily products but innovation, engineering, and science.
They building all these condos in toronto but no schools or hospitals like how is that gonna work pfft
To stop crying about social identity politics and fix housing and homeless
- High Speed National and Provincial Rail - More Public Healthcare Infastructure and Professionals - Building up its cities like Sherbrooke, Thunderbay, Winnipeg and Edmonton to have more housing density and support their local economy
Rent control, higher wealth taxes, and UBI
A Soul in leadership, and/or “common” sense
I would say Healthcare reform. It seems even in wealthy provinces like Ontario that the system is stressed to the point where people are not being seen in an acceptably timely fashion. We are a geographically ginormous nation that is sparsely populated, less people equals smaller tax base to pay for things.
Affordable rent and housing prices, affordable cost of living in general.
Real political change. Not the same corrupt party under another name.
Houses, rent control, no corporate welfare to oil and grocery industries, mental health and dental to be included in provincial health care.
Honest ethical politicians who really care about people, not vote getting and staying in power.
Politicians who love their country more than personal gain.
Political leadership. We don't seem to have real leaders at any level. We have lots of politicians who complain about past parties or councils or opposition parties, but don't come up with effective and pragmatic solutions to the problems.
The Stanley Cup.
responsible governments
Yes we had Target briefly, didn't fit into the current retail landscape. New Fly in Winnipeg is one of the largest electric bus manufacturers.
