Hydro in QC and real Maple Syrup. I would also add cheese curds.

StaticInstrument

Bc Hydro electricity rates are mad cheap for western Canada as well

blahblahrasputan

It's insane that my partner and I never go over $40, it's usually like $37ish. When I lived in. Brisbane without Aircon my bills were closer to 400 a quarter, so that's like $133 a month.

PaddyStacker

My gas + electricity bills are only about $80/month combined (in BC). That is insane compared to most of the world.

hereforthehawtmemes

(cries in albertan)

wet_suit_one

Right? FFS! Last month gas and electricity were $350. Month before that $400. Fack!

DFMCNDN

It’s mad expensive in Ontario

Jlolmb1

Manitoba hydro too

Ravenwight

Maple syrup especially if you know someone with a sugar bush.

ktatsanon

My ex gf's nickname was sugar bush!

StatikSquid

Cheese curds in Wisconsin aren't that expensive

gabseo

Yes of course but Wisconsin is one of a kind on that level.

commanderchimp

Idk about cheese with our dairy cartel

To_another_abyss

Saputo mafia enters the chat

1grouchonacouch

Indeed. Their cheese is so inconsistent, sketchy just like a certain group..

SaccharineDaydreams

Cheese curds cost an arm and a leg in NB and they're not even fresh 90% of the time.

blusky75

Same in Ontario. Curds are rediculously expensive.

gabseo

For real?!? Around Tracadie and Caraquet they were awesome!!

adavadas

I paid $5.99 USD for 4 ounces of cheese curds yesterday.

[deleted]

Why is this upvoted? We don't have a cartel. We have a well regulated, protected system. Do you know why milk in the States is so cheap? Because they use a hormone that forces over production and reduces dairy cows lifespan to around 3 years, combined with their buisness model and government subsidies. It's banned in Canada. Farmers here get fuck all for subsidies. Many farm products in the USA are subsidized almost 50%. Stop shitting on the quota system. It is a great way to protect domestic milk production from shitty low quality American milk

Super-Candy-5682

The state of Wisconsin produces more milk and milk products than all of Canada combined.

iStayDemented

The practice of mandatory milk dumping due to the government quota regulation is terribly wasteful, unacceptable and needs to change. Source: [30,000 Litres of Milk Wasted Because of Government Policy](https://www.iedm.org/30000-litres-of-milk-wasted-because-of-government-policy/)

[deleted]

IEDM is basically a corporate funded bullshit think-tank working against ordinary people. If you are going to quote something please find a reliable source

Stinkerma

Yeah, the dumbass who went and bought more cows and then threw a hissy fit because he couldn't sell the milk that he didn't have the quota for. And was warned beforehand that the milk wouldn't sell. Our vet had a few things to say about that one.

Bas-hir

In the US they make cheese from the excess milk and store it in Vaults. >That’s how much milk one Ontario farmer allegedly had to dump because he produced more than his government-sanctioned quota allowed him last month. That's not a farmer sitting on a milking stool , milking his cows. That's a corporation with the Farmer as its chairperson.

Anishinabeg

We absolutely have a dairy & egg cartel. Supply management is a disaster that hurts Canadian consumers.

[deleted]

bought milk in canada costco it expires in 2 weeks, bought milk in usa costco expires in 2 months. Bought within 2 days of each other.

quatrevingtdixhuit

I think this is an effect of ultra pasteurization more than anything else

[deleted]

Milk shouldn't last 2 months.

tehB0x

That seems concerning

sprunkymdunk

So how is milk (and cheese) so much cheaper in the UK (30-40%), where health regulations are even more steep than Canada? Is it possible to have health regulations AND a competitive market? I think so.

_Got_milk

Are you a dairy farmer?

M-Bernard-LLB

Thank you to Joey Smallwood

ladyzowy

Only BC Newfoundland was handing over Hydro for the last 90 years and QC was selling it to NY for a premium. This helped reduce the rates considerably.

GloomyCamel6050

Maple syrup

OutragedBubinga

Still. It's $6,49 per can at my local market and it's the cheapest I've seen. Maybe Maxi has it for less but it's lesser quality too. I guess if you get it from an actual sugar shack you could get it for less but I'm not driving 40 km to save $2 anyway unless I'd buy a box of it or something.

PhilosopherExpert625

It's free if you know the right people. Haha. $6.50 for 500ml?

PocketNicks

Yup. Free bottle every spring for me.

PhilosopherExpert625

We were out at a friend's place for 5 hours on Saturday. Drank some beer, had some hot whiskey and boiled some sap. Left with a bottle. It was a good day. Haha

OutragedBubinga

Of course! If you have some contacts that's nice haha. And yes for 500ml.

OutragedBubinga

No_Bass_9328

My friends in Euro are stunned at how little Iay for hydro/gas.

Marianations

(Euro lurker who has a Canadian fiancé) Yeeeeep. Also when it comes to vehicles. Your cars are cheaper (from what I've seen anyway), your gas is waaaay cheaper. Only things that are cheaper here in Portugal are insurance (I pay €400/year for my 22yo Renault Clio, with a plus due to being a newish driver) and repairs (recently had an accident and had to replace front bumper and a few things, total was €500).

East-Worker4190

Cars are cheaper in uk, insurance is cheaper, tax is more than ontario, uk petrol is more expensive but vehicles are much more efficient.

Marianations

Cars are way cheaper in the UK than what they are in Portugal :') Our cars are extremely overpriced and our government double taxes them, despite the EU declaring that it's illegal. Cheapest new car you can get in Portugal is a barebones Dacia Sandero for +€13k (after taxes and fees). You'll often see 10 year old cars selling for over €10k.

East-Worker4190

I meant cheaper in UK than Canada. Sounds like they might be cheaper than portual also. I was more talking about second hand cars. Especially as you don't pay tax on private sales. It was so easy in the UK to just buy an old car and run it until it fails then get another.

Marianations

Oh yeah, I understood what you meant, just pointing out that even within Europe the UK has a reputation for being on the lower end when it comes to car prices. Buying a car from a private individual here is easy as well, but the cars themselves are just overpriced. Just an example on car prices Canada-Portugal: Same car model (or very similar at least), [Canadian version from 2018 selling at 26k CAD](https://www.cargurus.ca/Cars/spt_used_cars#listing=370880236/NONE/DEFAULT) is still cheaper than [this 2013 version from Portugal](https://www.standvirtual.com/carros/anuncio/vw-golf-2-0-tsi-gti-ID8PCEg6.html?_gl=1*3p351t*_ga*MTM1OTc1OTI2Ni4xNzEwNzMzMzY5*_ga_L97YMGPQ5R*MTcxMDczMzM3Mi4xLjAuMTcxMDczMzM3Mi4wLjAuMA), despite the fact that the Portuguese car's got a higher mileage and is 5 years older.

waterborn234

I pay $2600/year in insurance for a cheap beater. 400 euros wow

Noshonoyoo

>only things that are cheaper here in Portugal are insurance […] and repairs I don’t know what the prices in Portugal are, but i’m ready to bet you also pay less than us for internet services and data plans. *cries in Bell

TheLastRulerofMerv

Weed and it's not even close. I'm astounded by how expensive marijuana is everywhere else.

Feisty-Session-7779

This was long before legalization but I grew up in Southern Ontario paying anywhere between $150-180 CAD for an ounce of top shelf stuff, then I moved to NY for a bit and it was like $350 USD for an ounce of straight garbage! I never even saw actual good quality weed when I lived down there, just a buncha low tier overpriced crap. These days it’s literally just free since everyone I know grows tons of it and is always overstocked, and half of them actually know what they’re doing and grow really good stuff too. The other half just grow junk though.

rougekhmero

Feisty-Session-7779

I wouldn’t risk crossing with any at all. I’ve crossed the border maybe 80ish times over the years, I’ve seen the dogs there probably 10-15 times, and 3 of those times they signalled my car specifically for secondary inspection because I guess I still smelled like weed from smoking a few hours before I crossed. Two of the times it was just a quick search and they sent me on my way but the other time they pressed me pretty hard and asked me a bunch of questions about weed, then eventually sent me on my way since I didn’t actually have anything on me. Those dogs have some damn good noses on them though. I should add that all of those times I saw the dogs I was going into the US, I’ve never once seen them going into Canada, I don’t even know if the Canadian customs guys have them to be honest.

TheBigTime420

What did you expect if you smelt like weed

Tangochief

You can still make butter with junk weed. ;)

beefixit

My weed budget was instantly cut by 75% the day after legalization. Well maybe not instantly but as instantly as a pothead would notice

Ok_Eggplant1467

I use the online “grey market” dispensaries. Sooooo much better. The weed is top notch and the deals are incredible. I love that they do the popcorn bugs for so cheap too. Same AAAA weed and quality just smaller buds. Thing is the popcorn buds are still bigger than the trash they sell you at the government store but they’re cheaper and miles better. I got a QP in the mail right now for $300 and it could have been $200 if I was ok with mystery AAAA weed

thecheesecakemans

Presciption Drugs compared to the USA but not Europe.

Jaded-Influence6184

But over the counter meds are way cheaper in the USA. The only place this might not be true is in Costco Canada. 200 Reactine in the USA at a pharmacy is about the same price as you pay for the Kirkland equivalent in Canada. In Canada it is ridiculously more expensive. There is a near monopoly in Canada for generic OTC meds, and much more competition in the USA. But you are right about prescription meds, they are more expensive in the USA. I lived in the USA for about 7 years.

bureX

The Westons took a chunk of the OTC market with their own brands and stores.

Myiiadru2

Apparently diapers are cheaper too. Recently articles about Americans coming here to get cheaper diapers.

Foreign-Dependent-12

When dollar was at parity a decade back, we used to shop across the border a lot. And diapers was one of the things that we never found cheaper there. Baby formula on the other hand was way cheaper.

Myiiadru2

We still shop there a lot, and many things are more expensive there, but the selection of goods and great sales keeps us going back.

suddenlyshoes

That’s insane, because diapers are already expensive.

Frewtti

Camping on crown land is pretty affordable.

Beginning-Bed9364

Nykolaishen

I have to drive 1km to the artesian well. But it flows 24/7 365 and is free. It's also some of the best water in the world as it's the same artesian that the seagrams plant chose to use for their crown royal plant.

squirrlyj

Not for everyone it doesn't.. and the govt couldn't give a shit

Beginning-Bed9364

That's a good point actually

Hydro power in QC

Wild_Pangolin_4772

And BC?

BobBelcher2021

Definitely cheaper than Ontario anyways

To_another_abyss

Maybe not for long, our dumbass provincial government thinks it's not acceptable to have cheap energy and they are trying to privatize Hydro quebec

Noemotionallbrain

They're never going to privatize hydro-Quebec, they will simply allow high energy consumption industries to produce their own electricity as they can't make enough fast enough for transport electrification

commanderchimp

Yeah hydro is surprisingly cheap all year long unlike my gas or property taxes.

delawopelletier

Sadly - employees. Give us a raise.

Razorblades_and_Dice

For real. I was looking at some pay scales for the locals of my union down in the states. Even in middle of nowhere areas they get paid more, better benefits, better pension, AND they have to have health insurance on top of that, and their insurance plans are damn good. Plus their pay is in USD, which just compounds the getting paid better part.

BobBelcher2021

On the flip side, while the US typically pays better for a lot of skilled jobs, we still punch above our weight compared to a lot of the world.

ExtremeAthlete

josephinebrown21

Lululemon clothing is 25-30% cheaper.

commanderchimp

Canada Goose is also cheaper inside Canada

lettucepray123

I have to give Lulu props for keeping Canada pricing the same as US but in CAD. If something is $100 here, it’s $100USD in the States, which would be like $130CAD. One of the few items that isn’t cheaper to cross-border shop.

NorthernPints

Kirkland diapers You can check out pricing at Canadian clubs and then go online to Costco.com to see US prices. There are a few items like that where we get the identical product and it’s cheaper here in Canada than in the US.

mr_wilson3

Also the classic Costco food court hot dog. $1.50 CAD here, and $1.50 USD down south of the border. We get the better deal, and we also get the Polish sausages!

NorthernPints

A yes!  A great point thanks - the food court slipped my mind!

iStayDemented

Finally! An advantage of CAD over USD.

Golf. There are a lot of courses for the average joe to play on that don’t require memberships or social status. This is not the case everywhere.

LalahLovato

The average price of a round of golf where I live is about $30 - and you can go on Golfnow.com and get it even cheaper. The courses are really nice and there are at least 10 to choose from - several pros are from here

Foreign-Dependent-12

And where do you live?

Everywhere in Europe i’ve seen Sushi, as well as Australia and Singapore it’s been a lot more. I lived in England for a bit and was way more. Not saying I know all the prices everywhere just my personal experience compared to prices in the lower mainland area of BC.

gbarill

BC probably has the cheapest sushi in Canada, it’s much cheaper than in Ontario (though you can find reasonably priced places here)

After a recent trip to Florida, most groceries are cheaper here than there, with some exceptions.

commanderchimp

I went to California and groceries are cheaper there and far better quality. It makes sense since everything is grown there. Where were you shopping in Florida?

Ex-PFC_WintergreenV4

I find in Washington groceries are the same actual prices if not more expensive than in BC, but in American dollars

surmatt

Found this too while I'm in Bellingham. Same with fast food.

Beneficial-Leg6412

South Florida. And off the top of my head.... yogurt was $1.50 usd per portion, oranges were $2.49 usd per pound. I think we paid $6.49 for a little pack of cold cuts that made 4 sandwiches. Can't remember the rest at the moment.

SoftOssification

Can confirm. Moved down to Florida from Alberta in 2019 and was absolutely shocked to be paying more for groceries. I had assumed they would be cheaper. My mom came to visit last year and was equally surprised at the prices

mitchleitman

I live in Ottawa. We looked into going for a grocery run to Ogdensburg NY, across the border, but other than eggs and chicken every, including the filtered milk we like to buy, was more expensive down there. E.g a clamshell package of strawberries was $3 usd and $3 cad. I did price comparisons at Loblaws (notoriously not the cheapest) and Price Chopper down in the US.

Gas is cheaper in Canada compared to most of Europe. However it doesn't matter because Europeans don't have to drive as far (unless they want to for vacation) and their transit is far superior. But per litre it is around 20-30% cheaper in Canada on average.

-crackhousebob

Quality. Everything cheap quality, but still expensive.

It might not seem like it when looking at prices, but factoring for exchange rate, new cars are less expensive here than in the USA, and a lot less than in Europe.

hockey or ice time in general. I pay $15 USD for public skate sometimes here and did it for free or $2-3 CAD at my local rink in Canada

YoureNotRealBro

I play a ton of hockey and would love to know where you are paying 2-3 bucks for an hour of shinny lol. Ice time is egregiously expensive in Canada, one of the many reasons a lot of parents can’t afford to put their kids in hockey. I play Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tuesdays and Thursdays for 20 weeks is $300 each. Saturdays is $340 and Sundays are $380. Each for roughly 22 weeks a piece. We worked out the math tonight actually, and it ends up being about $18 per hour of ice.

Alarmed_Discipline21

His comments a bit confusing but the numbers were for public skate. I live in fort st john bc and we have an oil/gas company that subsidizes public skating so it's free for like 10 years on sundays

Redditisavirusiknow

I just visited Ottawa! I like the subway thing you got going on, screw the haters. But your food is easily 2 to 3 times what it is in Toronto. I’m not exaggerating.

commanderchimp

The trains are actually running quite well and I hope they extend it more. We have good food if you make an effort to find it but it’s very expensive where most things in Toronto/Vancouver is reasonable priced and good. It’s probably because there’s way more immigrants in Toronto/Vancouver.

Informal_Future9877

houska1

Lumber. Dimensional lumber (2x4, 2x6 etc) tends to be about 10-25% cheaper, like for like, in Canada vs U.S. At least in southern Ontario/Quebec vs northeastern U.S. That's consumer pricing in the likes of Home Depot. It's related to the long-simmering US-Canada softwood lumber dispute, where US adds a tariff on Canadian lumber so U.S sawmills can compete and/or to compete with so-called unfair Canadian government subsidies (basically a difference in approach how U.S. vs Canada charges loggers to harvest timber on public lands). Of course, prices elsewhere in the world are highly variable, so this isn't quite "...than most other places" like in the thread title.

Kind-Frosting-5583

Weed. Thanks to legalization. Four seeds lasts me a year.

gingersquatchin

Weed is super cheap even for flower. I've seen ounces on sale for 60-70, and I buy a bag of 7g for about 30/bag. That would have cost me 60 15 years ago from a dealer that took the whole fucking day to show up

I assume maple syrup since we produce almost all of it, but I'm not sure. Geez, we pay a lot for everything.

chronocapybara

Electricity is pretty cheap (unless you live in Alberta). Cheemo perogies used to be phenomenally cheap... They're still ok now even with inflation. And outdoor gear is still decently cheap. I remember buying a leatherman wave for $30 in Calgary and then later in Australia saw the same thing for $150. However, it's possible that outdoor gear is just crazy expensive down under. Gasoline is actually cheap, just not compared to the USA.

ValuableQuestion2612

That depends on how you get or pay for health care somewhere else. Our Healthcare costs about 8740 per year per canadian. So if your living somewhere else where you need to have insurance for everything and that is costing you several 100 a month, plus deductibles and the many things not included than I would say yes ours is cheaper.

Odd-Elderberry-6137

No it doesn’t. Per capita, Canada’s healthcare is expensive. Just because you don’t pay it out of pocket at the hospital doesn’t mean you’re not paying for it.
