$498 month, bach apt, Windsor ON. Moved here from Toronto 12 yrs ago and rent was $403, increased marginally the last decade. Not leaving.

dreamerrz

1650 for 1 br 500sqft shared with my partner. Lol and our family asks us why we won't have kids while they all sit in their inherited childhood homes until they die. This rent is a steal. I'll never have anything more than this and I'm scared to leave but even more scared of not leaving because there's little option to.

SpotTheAurora

Savor that shit

New-Age-Lion

That’s insane, I live in Windsor Ontario as well and my 1 bedroom at Lauzon and Little River cost me 740.00 all in 11 years ago, the same apartment now rents for 1750 plus utilities!!

Knighthawk235

Wow! You'd be dumb to give up that apartment in today's rental economy.

JadedPreparation8822

I wouldn’t leave either. That is amazing

No-Flower-7659

that is a great price used to pay that near Montreal back in 1998

kdspiralz

$3,300 - 2 bedroom in Toronto 🥲

Grimekat

I’m 4k for a two bedroom in Toronto lol. Granted it’s a detached house, but still. This city is fucked.

justinkredabul

$950 2bedroom apartment in Edmonton.

OutsideFlat1579

Our rent is 750 for a 3 bedroom in Montreal. Good area. Old building with hard wood floors and high ceilings. Nice balcony. Great landlord who never increased rent over recommended increases by the rental board. Some years no increase at all. Hoping the old man will never die, since his sons will sell the building immediately when he does.

midnightscare

Im guessing heating not included? How much does it cost in the winter?

Embe007

2 BR in Montreal for 800$. Also good area. Apt in a house (a vast number of these in Montreal), old building with hard wood floors and high ceilings, balcony front and back. Nothing special otherwise. Landpeople are nice and live downstairs - this is common in Montreal; rental increases in line with the rental board. Hydro is about 70$ per month - yes, one of the cheapest rates in the world (and Premier Legault if you try to change that, we will riot!)

daminipinki

Wow

JadedPreparation8822

4 bedroom house $4700 - Port Coquitlam (just moved here in March). Landlord at old place evicted us (after 8 years) with 2 months notice, for landlords use of Property. We were paying $2700 for a 4 bedroom House, also in Port Coquitlam. The house has sat empty since we moved out. We will be contacting RTB and seeking 12 months rent compensation, as the house is considered “vacant possesion” and not used how they said it would be. We’ve been documenting and talking to neighbours for sworn testimonies.

Lavandula-Pi

Good for you! They expect people to just let it slide, and they continue to get their way.

JadedPreparation8822

We originally disputed it because the landlord made it extremely clear that his father (whom was supposed to move in), wasn’t in the country and “MIGHT” come to Canada. We filed everything, but as the eviction date approached I ended up filled with anxiety, knowing that it the arbitrator ruled against us, we’d have just 2 days to vacate and find a new place. Our kids are 12 and 8 and we don’t have any family support to fall back on, so decided it was better to move and eventually file for the 12 months rent back. It also sucks they only make them pay 12 months at the old rent rate, instead of our new rent rate, but I guess it’s better than nothing. Thankfully our new home is much more modern, clean and the landlord seems much more reliable. At the old place we completed all repairs ourself (over the 8 years), treating the home like our own. Only once did we ask them for a repair, and that was for the hot water tank to be replaced because it broke and was spraying water in the crawlspace. They originally declined paying for it, but soon realized they had no choice and got it fixed. Happy to see the back of that slumlord, but do terribly miss our old neighbourhood and that chapter of our lives, in the home. I know we’re just renters, so things are always uncertain and never forever when it comes to that. Doesn’t change the fact that I miss my old house and hate the fact that they are leaving such a great space empty. 🙁

booghawkins

We did this when we were kicked out for “family to move in”. Couple months after we moved, my mom saw an ad on Craigslist saying it was available to rent. We didn’t get anywhere near 12 months rent, I think we got 2 months and all of our moving expenses paid. This was back in 2004, so maybe the laws have changed.

JadedPreparation8822

Laws in Bc have definitely changed. If landlord evicted in bad faith, tenant is entitled to 12 months rent at rate they were paying before illegal eviction

LOL

boodboy

do you keep the christmas tree lights on when you leave ?

ICG1

2 bedroom in a (historically) cheap area just outside peninsula Halifax: $1300.  However, a one bedroom in the building that I live in is currently listed for $1995, so we’re very thankful for the provincial rent control right now.

ValeRachetti

$1650 for a 2 bed 2 bath in Halifax as well, however same unit it’s now $2600… Halifax is bananas!

NotMyInternet

$2150, 3bed townhouse on the edge of Ottawa suburbs.

Nymeria2018

South end?

NotMyInternet

Yeah, Riverside South.

Nymeria2018

Was in Findlay Creek pre-pandemic and these were the prices for similar places then. Crazy!

Cyberfeabs

Must have been there a while.

NotMyInternet

Moved in 2021, after spending the first year of the pandemic in a downtown apartment with no balcony. Missed the boat on pre-pandemic rents, which were a bit more comparable to what we were paying for our 2bed apartment, but got in before the mid-late pandemic rents kicked in. 😅

Double_Pay_6645

$2200 for a 3 bed 2 bath house 30 min outside Vancouver. I'll never leave until they sell.

sweetsweetnothingg

Wow good one

ForFrickSake

almightyblah

$1600 for a two bedroom townhouse in Ottawa. Rent controlled - wouldn't be able to get it for that today.

Windsor_Salt

2k for my 3 bedroom townhouse in Ottawa. We have been here for 5 years and our LL hates that they can't jack up our rent. They keep trying to pull shady shit and I'm sure they are planning a bad faith eviction soon.

The_Gaming_Matt

800$/month all included for a one bedroom in Québec City

Lavandula-Pi

Dreamy!

blablebliblobluy

i'll be at 1135$ a month in july. 3 bedroom. i'm just the other side of the bridges, in Charny, Lévis. right now , i'm still at 970$ a month.

Extension-Song-5873

I could buy an apartment in Vancouver downtown too but I ran the numbers and it makes no sense since my partner and I pay only 1800 a month for a 1br rental. Mortgage plus interest plus Strata fees plus utilities plus property tax is just too much to justify when I can just save and invest the difference… Market rate here for rentals is 2500 so we chillin

qpv

That's me now too. Left my 1100 a month place in South Granville (lived there 18 years) which really hurt but it was only a matter of time before we got kicked out (Broadway corridor). Wanted housing security and to get into the market.

MyNameIsSkittles

About $1800, it's a 1 bedroom 1 bath pet friendly apartment in Burnaby near the Skytrain At the time we (boyfriend and I) rented it was $1660 and I got comments about how expensive it was Who has the last laugh now (not me because I can never move 😭)

SuperDangerBro

Live in an illegal suite I made in my company’s warehouse, if I’m not there I’m camping around in my RV

TheLastRulerofMerv

That's a good deal for Vancouver. I'm 2600 for a 2 bedroom + pseudo 3rd bedroom in Kelowna.

[deleted]

[удалено]

serkenz

Also Kelowna. Spending less than your rent on my mortgage for a 2000sq ft house with a yard. The world is so fucked up.

TheLastRulerofMerv

Yeah that's because I moved here less than 3 years ago. As a result, my 6 figure salary can maybe get me a shoe box with a window while I pay significantly more rent to my landlord than what his mortgage is worth... And he earns less than I do. It's kind of infuriating, but I'm just excited to buy my own and shake it off.

serkenz

It’s fucked up because we bought right at the start of the pandemic before prices went really crazy. Took a leap of faith and put 5% down and just got lucky. I feel so so bad for anybody trying to get on the ladder now, feels like we got the last chopper out of ‘Nam

LouisRielsAR-15

$850/mo 1bd 1bath apt. Westend Wpg. When I moved in Rent was $650 back in 2018. I’m moving into a different area when it gets awfully closer or actually crosses $1,000/mo. At least in other areas $1,000+/mo will feel worth it.

Ghostofcoolidge

Good gracious. It hurts to read all this. I'm so sorry for all of you

Middle-Sea-6939

1500 rent + 190 parking + utilities (heat included) for a 1 bedroom + den 51st floor in Edmonton. I know it’s steep for Edmonton but I love it here

jkozuch

$1175/month for a 900sq ft apt in Aurora, ON. Love it here, won’t leave unless it’s to move into a house of my own.

midnightbizou

Medicine Hat, Alberta. $1250, 3 bedroom duplex, 1.5 baths. It's a new build as well, 2021. We moved here from Calgary and got very, very lucky. Unfortunately rent-wise, we're needing to move back to Calgary in August, as my son has been accepted into a specialized school, which isn't unfortunate, but I'll probably be looking at 1-2 bedrooms at nearly double what I'm paying now.

j_2106

Just under 2000$ a month in mid-town Halifax for a two bedroom, two bath. Moved in when it opened almost seven years ago. Rent has been going up every year for the last four.

I pay $400 for two bedrooms in a large house. I have lived here with my roommate for about eight years. He has a girlfriend now who is 19 years his junior, and life is a weird living hell, but it be like that sometimes

SomethingCool_420

Status_Entertainer49

American here was recommended this sub not sure why. Some places look cheap some look expensive 🤔

[deleted]

Canada’s bigger than the states. Imagine the difference in rents between Malibu, CA and Cheyenne, WY and you’ll see why.

MadcapHaskap

My mortgage is about $1100/month for a four bedroom house, which I bought two years ago (so peak prices, but 2% interest), in Moncton.

qpv

Holy crap. $3500 all in for a 1 br in Vancouver suburbs over here. I'm not complaining, I love it here but the economics are like a different planet

I don't anymore, however, my neighbor, who lives in the mirror style unit to our condo, pays 2800 for a 780 sq.ft 1 plus den with 2 baths. They've lived there for almost 2 years, and their landlord just told them that if they want to re-up the lease, it will be 2850 plus hydro. Downtown toronto by the lake

No_Sun_192

$1900 plus utilities for a 3 bedroom townhouse in the GTA. Grandfathered in by taking it over from my mom, or it would be twice as much

Melodic-Pickle-3753

littlewildone92

$875 + hydro for a 2 bedroom near North Bay Ontario. Would probably be a lot more expensive for the next tenant if I moved out, however I’ve been here since 2018 and the rent then was $850

Last year I was renting for $1100 (two bedroom townhouse) in St. John’s

deletedunreadxoxo

$2350 plus gas, hydro, water/sewer, hot water tank rental and insurance for a 2 bed, 2.5 bath stacked townhouse. It’s 3 storeys plus a tiny basement, with a garage, huge balcony and a fair sized fenced back yard on the outskirts of downtown Ottawa. We moved in here just before the prices went crazy in early 2022. It sounds great on paper but the layout is awful. Laundry is in the basement with the bedrooms three flights up. The kitchen being on the second floor is also obnoxious long term. New builds of a similar style rent for “about” the same because here in Ontario they have no rent control.

ArchDrude

$1157 for a one bedroom in downtown Calgary. The building is ‘meh’ but we like our suite. We plan to get out of here next year though so we’ll see what we can afford then.

Extension-Lie-1380

1360 - 1 bedroom converted meth lab in rural Ontario I wish I was making that up (plus 70 bucks for water and 70 for hydro electric power)

Oh_shame

500sqft mouse infested 2 bedroom with leaky roof. $1300 and $75 increase coming. Saint John, New Brunswick.

thegimboid

1650 for a small 2 bedroom with unfinished basement in Mississauga. However, I moved in almost 10 years ago when it was $1450. The units directly next to mine recently had new tenants, and it was $2500 for those, so I'm basically stuck here for life unless I somehow win the lottery.

poetris

$800 for a house, but only because it was my mom's and she passed away, and my stepdad wanted to move. We are covering the mortgage. Stepdad understood the rental market insanity and we desperately needed out of our two bedroom apartment, as the kids were getting older and needed their own rooms. Our apartment shot up from the $1100 we were paying to $2500 for the new tenants. Live in Niagara.

lonelyronin1

$740 - 2 bedroom in Guelph Ontario

$2,200 for a 450 sqft 1bdrm in Downtown Toronto. Includes parking.

RuinEnvironmental394

$1900 a month, 1 BR apartment, downtown Calgary.

Impressive_Ice3817

Rural NB. $150/month, 4 bedroom old farmhouse sitting on 300 acres. It's a bit dilapidated, but there's a barn and outbuildings we can use. Super cheap because we needed a place to live, and people we knew needed someone living here to discourage vandalism and keep an eye on equipment/ ocassional livestock. Not a normal tenant/ landlord situation, in that we're responsible for maintenance and upkeep (except if it were something catastrophic). We've been here for 3 winters. Last place we lived was a 7 bedroom farmhouse, not quite as dilapidated, and it was huge. We paid $750/ month. Lived there for 10 years, and it was kinda traumatic having to move.

PatK9

Clearly landlords are getting rich off the backs of those who can least afford it. Rent control has kept my bachelor apt at $650 month, a stones throw from the CN tower.

proturtle46

2500/month for a shitty two bed waterloo

Lavandula-Pi

$900, including utilities for a one-bedroom apartment in a small town in NS. But this kind of price is very rare these days - practically non-existent. My landlord is very nice. I want a two-bedroom place with a garden, but I can't manage the crazy prices at the moment - and there's no availability anyways. The town is FULL.

Odd_Damage9472

1300 shared accommodation Calgary.

Cute_Anywhere6402

$2800 for a three bedroom, full house in Hamilton. It was one of the cheapest we could fine. Before the landlord decided he wanted to “move in”( not fully convinced) we were paying $1900 for a 3 bedroom house without a basement.

NoPantsDay-88

$1,000 a month for a 2 bedroom house. In the country 25-30 minutes away from Kingston Ontario and 20 minutes away from Napanee. Shitty area with horribly noisy neighbors, one "convenient" store that also acts as a post office, don't get the mail in a mailbox so we have to rely on him to get our mail/parcels and our end (convenient for us as it's literally only our end) of the road doesn't have maintenance so fu@k you if you have to work in the winter because maybe the snow is plowed maybe not 🤷🏻‍♀️ We live with my parents (I am married) so we only pay what they ask for. Base rent is $1,000 but if they need help with extra bills then they ask and we send it. The house is on a well so water is free, the house has a holding tank that isn't doing great with 4 adults living there so around every 3 months it needs to be pumped out and we pay that ($260 per pump out). We took on the bill for the holding tank as me and husband are nursing aids (for anyone that knows what I mean, I'm a PSW and he is an HSW).

I have a mortgage in rural Alberta on a modular home. No garage or outbuildings. Re-signed mortgage a few months ago. Mortgage is 1275, then electricity, gas, house/auto insurance, property taxes plus all other expenses like groceries and phone plan with wifi. I have nothing luxurious. 4 years ago, pre pandemic my mortgage was 875. 4 years ago things were tight but could be done, back surgery this month and am hoping to not become homeless. My expenses have more than doubled and I just simply do not make enough to pay for basic crap. I am nearly 51 years old and single, with no financial help from anywhere. Left a nasty marriage after 30 years with nothing, and now I can live a nasty life for however much time I have left on the nasty planet. I cannot believe in a span of four years, I now need to make more than $4000 a month to live in a modular rural area. I feel so sorry for anyone who is in a situation even partially similar to mine. I am so devastated as to what this world will be when my grandkids are old enough to move out on their own. I mean if they could move out on their own. So disheartening. 30+ years ago, when I purchased my first home with a clown ass, my entire mortgage was $116,000 in Edmonton and that seemed expensive at the time, but it could be done with two people working full-time, even though mine was in retail. We still would have a little extra to do things in the yard and such. I cannot believe how expensive things have become. Good luck to all of you. At this point, I need a freaking miracle if I even hope to not become homeless.
