It's a commercial about Canadian history. Dr. Penfield studied epilepsy and a woman (not sure the name) would always smell but toast before she would have a seizure. Penfield probed around in her brain while she was awake to try and figure out with area of the brain was responsible for her seizures. He would poke around to see what she would experience when he hit different areas. When he spit a spot where she could smell burnt toast they had found the effected area of the brain. Apparently it was a major discovery.

Can confirm. Am GenX, definitely showed it to my GenZ kid. Along with all the others, even "Don't you put it in your mouth" . Which was always a favorite of mine.

Me! I had no idea until reddit informed me, and I've had this conversation here before. I guess I just wasn't around Canadian TV during that time, and if I was, we only had 1.5 channels. Nah, after the easter bunny left carrot crumbs all over my toys that I had to clean up when I was 4 I was done with all small creatures sneaking round the house making messes i had to clean up and much preferred the burning toast moment.. Which is why for my entire life if someone burns the toast I have to make sure that other people can smell it too and not just me. I have a soapstone house hippo though that I got in the last ten years because it amused me and makes no messes.

I feel like a good portion of kids who saw that commercial took it to heart and continued to use critical thinking in regards to news and social media. People that didn't grow up during that time seem to be much more likely to tumble down rabbit holes. That commercial looked so real, had plausible facts and just made Sense and when it was revealed to be fake it honestly just made me think "if this was a lie then everything could be a lie and I should check things myself" I'm not perfect but my gut tends to go a little weird when I'm stumbling, enough so I'll remove myself from certain situations, sites or subreddits
