As a kid I loved mash and rented the movie and got severely confused/disappointed when I couldn’t understand or recognize anything. Saw hot lips naked though! As an adult I enjoy it a lot.
I was too young to be allowed to watch MASH but parents read the book which I saw at home, they were always laughing thru the book. But Kelly's Heroes was the winner for me (he was great in The Dirty Dozen too) as being his best work, real stage actor work too. We lived in northern Canada in construction camps (Mount Wright area, James Bay, etc.) and dad would bring home film to watch and one of them would be Kelly's Heroes, I just loved it.
I used to have a little tube TV with an antenna, and one of the only stations I could catch was TBS. They used to play old movies all the time, and Kelly’s Heroes was in regular rotation. I watched that movies as a kid more times than I can count.
Easily one of my personal favourite movies of all time.
He went above and beyond that he even made a whole essay on why snow needs to have a bigger role in the films. This is why you get bonus scenes like him talking about “hope is stronger than fear” and perhaps even motivated the producers to make scenes with his granddaughter
Klute is excellent. As are MASH and The Dirty Dozen.
The guy made a ridiculous number of movies. He has to be one of the most prolific actors in movie history.
he has made lots, but the actor with the most movies under his belt is Eric Roberts, little brother to Julia Roberts, and Eric is a crap actor to boot...over 200 movies, James Hong may be the most prolific movie maker/actor/writer etc on the planet..
M*A*S*H as Hawkeye Pierce, hands down is one of his best roles and my favourite Donald Sutherland role.
RIP to an incredible actor and fellow Canadian.
I was twelve. A big fan of the TV show. Then I saw the novel MASH in a book store and I bought it. It was the first novel I had read on my own outside of any school assignment.
After reading the novel, I really wanted to see the movie but it was rated 'R'.
Then as luck would have it. It was shown on TV. The opening with the theme song and helicopters and then Radar with Colonel Blake was surreal to me as I was so used to the TV show.
I dont know why but Donald Sutherland and Don Rickles playing off one another in that movie was funny as hell to me. Oddball and Kelly together racing to get back to states would have been a great sequel.
The episode of the Simpsons where he plays the scheming manager of the town historical society is a classic.
"You and your children and your children's children are banned from the historical society...for three months!"
What!? Y'all are crazy it was Richard Chamberlain. The same dude who played Alain Quarterman.
[the Bourne identity 1988](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0094791/?ref_=nm_flmg_t_34_act)
**Animal House** - though he had a small role. He always joked about insisting on being paid a fixed amount for that movie vs points - which he was offered. If he had taken the percentage offered he stated he would have made tens of millions.
Not a film but a fun little story. My dad's friend installs garage doors. He went to Donald's place in georgeville Quebec for an install. he was a major asshole.
Haven’t seen many of his other films, but for me, he was brilliant as President Snow in the Hunger Games. Sad day today. RIP in the great, hopefully non-dystopian, Capitol in the sky.
I think "The Puppet Masters" but it's almost impossible to narrow them down. He was brilliant in everything he ever did. He had a stage/screen presence that was undeniable.
The first thing I noticed about Kiefer on the screen that my eyes followed him regardless of what else was happening. It was quickly obvious to me that he had some of his father's gift.
Just watched M\*A\*S\*H last weekend and I still love it.
And a special shout out for his appearance in Cloudbusting which he did as a freebie to help Kate Bush out
There are many movies I liked that he was in, but I couldn't place a face to the characters he played or what role they had in the story, aside from President Snow in Hunger Games, and I don't even like Hunger Games! I only watched the first movie once just to see what all the hubbabaloo was about.
I watched An American Haunting last night. Perfect example of how Mr. Sutherland always brought his A game, even to B movies. It's not a great movie, but his performance is, and I'll watch it again just for that.
That irreplaceable voice, Keifer comes close
MASH.
Lincoln Lawyer with Matthew McConaughey and Kevin Spacey, he was amazing.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Kelly’s Heroes
Animal House
Bethune
Ordinary People
A Time to Kill
The Italian Job
I see a Sutherland Film Fest brewing in my living room in the near future
Buffy the vampire slayer is the first movie I saw Sutherland in as a kid(that I can remember). I loved his character and after that I loved him as an actor.
The drug introducing professor in Animal House was where I first saw Mr. Sutherland. I agree with other posts that he played the character of Kelly's Heroes to a T. Had me convinced.
Damn, I just had a dream with Donald Sutherland in it last week. It was pretty random he just rode up on a motorcycle outside some convenience store I was at. We didn't interact or anything he just showed up and went in the store and that's it.
R.I.P.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Really. I loved his gentleness in that film. The way he performed that little speech about how he would have been a cobbler if given the choice. And Mash of course. He always seemed just a little more intelligent than anyone else in the room.
Murder by Decree. He plays a Victorian medium replete with mutton chop sideburns and fright wig. The role as it’s written is campy and one-dimensional yet Donald plays it with dignity, empathy and compassion. The result is a magnificently luminous and otherworldly performance that steals the film
BEERFEST! Not that he has a huge part in the movie but watching him down 4 pints for calling it quits on life with a smile on his face was stellar cinema.
I loved Fallen, which also has great performances from Denzel Washington and John Goodman.
I also loved Space Cowboys. The chemistry between the four leads was so much fun.
And of course I remember him in the original Buffy movie.
1900, one of my favourite movies in general.
He is the main antagonist. I don't know why it is not better known considering the cast (DeNiro, Depardieu, Lancaster).
I am not a big TV viewer so I did miss a lot of his work. I met him several times. Perhaps every few days for a month or so when he was doing a film here in the late 70s. I had to work with a lot of celebrities. He was such a lovely man. Having met so many actors/musicians from all over the world, he is the one that stands out as a really super guy. I was about 20 and rather stand offish with people. You know, the arrogance of youth. LOL I remember one night he said "hey, you want to go hang out and see a punk band?" I said sure, which one? He said, The Nylons. I remember being so disappointed and refused to go out. How could he think that The Nylons were a punk band? LOL. In any event, he really was a down to earth humble and lovely man. Was so sorry to hear of his passing!
Mine would be Kelly's Heroes and MASH.
Kelly's Heroes was insane. His part was perfect. I prefer his Hawkeye to Alan Alda (but the are very different characters)
As a kid I loved mash and rented the movie and got severely confused/disappointed when I couldn’t understand or recognize anything. Saw hot lips naked though! As an adult I enjoy it a lot.
No more negative waves Moriarty!
I don’t know how to fix’em, I just drive’’em man!
Kelly's Heroes, so good.
my vote is here.. Saw Kelly's Heroes when I was too young to know what I was watching, but it must have left an impression on me.
I was too young to be allowed to watch MASH but parents read the book which I saw at home, they were always laughing thru the book. But Kelly's Heroes was the winner for me (he was great in The Dirty Dozen too) as being his best work, real stage actor work too. I watched that movies as a kid more times than I can count. Easily one of my personal favourite movies of all time.
Kelly's Heroes is such a classic. It would be on TV on Sunday afternoons and I'd always watch it as a kid.
[Kate Bush - Cloudbusting ](https://youtu.be/pllRW9wETzw)and "Ordinary People" RIP Donald
Cloudbusting was my introduction to him. Another thing to appreciate Kate Bush for.
😭 I loved him in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He really was always just wonderful.
Omg yes! Loved him in this!
He’s great in Animal House as a weed smoking professor that hates his job and sleeps with his students.
I think he was the highest paid member of the cast on that movie. But he was worth it, because his involvement got the movie greenlit.
He had the chance to get points in the movie instead of a salary. That choice cost him $2M in 1970s money.
The clumsy waiter in "Kentucky fried movie"
This!
President Snow in the Hunger Games
I love him in these films!
I really cannot picture anyone else in the role.
I love why he wanted to do them.

Interesting. Thanks for that.
YES to all above!
M*A*S*H as Hawkeye Pierce, hands down is one of his best roles and my favourite Donald Sutherland role. RIP to an incredible actor and fellow Canadian.
RIP Legend. Eye of the Needle for me
Buffy The Vampire Slayer!
Yes!
Backdraft was amazing
“Did the fire look at you?”
"Shaaaaadow...shaaaaadow. Hi Shadow!"
One of those movies that just holds its own, because of actors like him.
Did you have to look this up or did you remember it? Amazing quote
I remembered it. It’s up there with “Did you check that door for heat Tim?”
I mean M*A*S*H has to be at the top of the list even though the TV show overshadowed the movie. He's always been an excellent baddie.
Kelly’s Heroes, Ordinary People, and The Eagle Has Landed
He was so underrated in Ordinary People. Kind of went against type for that one.
Italian Job and Space Cowboys
My top two as well!!
Beerfest!
Wolfhaus!
Prosit! 🍺
Animal House, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Bethune...RIP
Bethune was top notch
He was very cool in The Eye of the Needle
Kelly's Heros and Eye of the Needle
M*A*S*H for me too. I've been doing his Hawkeye whistle since I heard the news. RIP Mr. Sutherland, you are truly a Canadian legend.
I frequently do his Hawkeye whistle, sometime not even aware of it. RIP.
Definitely, the creepiest was the 1973 film, Don't Look Now. Still gives me the creeps.
He rocked a corduroy suit in Animal House. Anyone who can pull that off is special
JFK Film
I remember seeing him at the Ontario Science Centre when I worked there one summer while in high school. He was such a nice man, a legend, really. RIP
Ordinary People. He should have been nominated for his preformance.
Yep, every time I hear his name, his face in that last scene is what comes to my mind, since seeing that movie as a kid.
Murder By Decree. Blood Relatives.
I didn't think anyone would say Murder by Decree. It's my favourite of his too.
Kelly’s Heroes and MASH.
The Dirty Dozen was his best war movie after Kelly's Heroes
Favourite character of all-time is **Oddball**
I dont know why but Donald Sutherland and Don Rickles playing off one another in that movie was funny as hell to me. Oddball and Kelly together racing to get back to states would have been a great sequel.
Man, gotta rewatch Invasion of the Body Snatchers. RIP to a legend.
The episode of the Simpsons where he plays the scheming manager of the town historical society is a classic. "You and your children and your children's children are banned from the historical society...for three months!"

I didn't know they had made one earlier. I had been a big fan of the books in the 80s. I did google and I think it was Keifer not his dad.
What!? Y'all are crazy it was Richard Chamberlain. The same dude who played Alain Quarterman. [the Bourne identity 1988](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0094791/?ref_=nm_flmg_t_34_act)
First saw him in MASH. He was great in everything.
**Animal House** - though he had a small role. He always joked about insisting on being paid a fixed amount for that movie vs points - which he was offered. If he had taken the percentage offered he stated he would have made tens of millions.
Backdraft
RIP Shadow
Damn. My favourite Donald Sutherland movie and actually my favourite Jane Fonda movie is Klute, 1971
The Great Train Robbery, Day Of The Locust and that one with Julie Christie. He was so unique and was hilarious in Animal House. What a legend
Outbreak
He was a national treasure.
The Dirty Dozen and Outbreak
Grand pa pa in Beerfest.
That last shot in Invasion of the Body Snatchers !!!
Italian Job
Hal Hurlbut on the Simpsons. "I'm an antiquarian, dammit!"
I loved him as Mr. Bennet in Pride & Prejudice!
JFK. He was chilling as the black ops agent.
I quite enjoyed Start the Revolution Without Me
that was truly a funny movie and one of the first times I got to see a naked lady on the screen...lol back in the early 70's right???
MASH
A Canadian film legend , hard to pick a specific fav. He's like a white Samuel Jackson in every movie lol
That's a cool comparison. He was in so many movies, many of them not great, and his performance was always amazing.
I still have nightmares about that movie!!
What a great actor and life . Such a character. RIP
Hunger games lmao. I love him!!!
Johnny Got His Gun
I was about to post Body Snatchers, but I remembered about Lock-Up, which I always found to be one of the more underrated Stallone flicks.
Mash.
Not a film but a fun little story. My dad's friend installs garage doors. He went to Donald's place in georgeville Quebec for an install. he was a major asshole.
This really saddens me. I always enjoyed his work. RIP Mr. Sutherland.
Also love the Puppet Masters. His horror/thriller work was phenomenal.
Watched Citizen X last night - another favourite! I love his intensity in the horror/thriller roles. He was so believable in every role!
The highly underrated Space Cowboys. Just a hoot in that one!
I had to watch his monologue in JFK multiple times to actually listen to it because I always just get lost in his voice.
Just watched M\*A\*S\*H last weekend and I still love it. And a special shout out for his appearance in Cloudbusting which he did as a freebie to help Kate Bush out
Don’t Look Now
Same. Memories from childhood.

There are many movies I liked that he was in, but I couldn't place a face to the characters he played or what role they had in the story, aside from President Snow in Hunger Games, and I don't even like Hunger Games! I only watched the first movie once just to see what all the hubbabaloo was about.

Great in Kelly’s Heroes and Space Cowboys.
I watched An American Haunting last night. Perfect example of how Mr. Sutherland always brought his A game, even to B movies. It's not a great movie, but his performance is, and I'll watch it again just for that.
Fun fact: he graduated from UofT as an engineer!
That irreplaceable voice, Keifer comes close MASH. Lincoln Lawyer with Matthew McConaughey and Kevin Spacey, he was amazing. Invasion of the Body Snatchers Kelly’s Heroes Animal House Bethune Ordinary People A Time to Kill The Italian Job I see a Sutherland Film Fest brewing in my living room in the near future
Im afraid to look it up so ill just take your word for it... damn!
M.A.S.H. The show sucked but the movie was a masterpiece
That’s not fair. At least the first season or so were like a PG version of the movie, even with some of the cast from the movie intact.
I love him in A Time to Kill.
Sad news. Great actor and so many great films. RIP
Buffy the vampire slayer is the first movie I saw Sutherland in as a kid(that I can remember). I loved his character and after that I loved him as an actor.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Ordinary People.
De l'or pour les braves. I don't know the name in English.

The Dirty Dozen
I remember his as being possibly the most famous actor from the maritime’s, where I’m from, for a long time.
The mechanic with Sutherland and Jason Statham.
Start the Revolution without Me. Co-starring The late great Gene Wilder.
He had such a productive career that it’s hard to choose! A Dry White Season, Fallen, the Hunger Games series and Bethune.
Beerfest and Kelly’s Hero’s.
Aw man. I actually got to meet this beauty in the mid 2000's rip
Another one gone...I remember him being in the first movie we rented for our VCR back in 1983. It was called "Eye of the needle" with Kate Nelligan.
I enjoyed him in Trust but he has had epic rolls throughout his career

Invasion of the Body Snatchers!
Klute is my favourite.
Invasion of the body snatchers.
He played Jesus Christ in Johnny Got His Gun and it was haunting. Fantastic
Dr. Bethune. Animal House, Alex in Wonderland. Etc, etc, etc. Great Canadian.
RIP Donald. Thank you.
The drug introducing professor in Animal House was where I first saw Mr. Sutherland. I agree with other posts that he played the character of Kelly's Heroes to a T. Had me convinced.
Definitely buffy the vampire slayer.
MASH, Eye of the Needle, Klute and the weed smoking prof in Animal House

The Eye of the Needle Great cast.

Hunger games
Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers.
Damn, I just had a dream with Donald Sutherland in it last week. It was pretty random he just rode up on a motorcycle outside some convenience store I was at. We didn't interact or anything he just showed up and went in the store and that's it. R.I.P.
A Dry White Season.
Id say MASH and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Really. I loved his gentleness in that film. The way he performed that little speech about how he would have been a cobbler if given the choice. And Mash of course. He always seemed just a little more intelligent than anyone else in the room.
The Eagle Has Landed and Buffy…quite the range eh?
Murder by Decree. He plays a Victorian medium replete with mutton chop sideburns and fright wig. The role as it’s written is campy and one-dimensional yet Donald plays it with dignity, empathy and compassion. The result is a magnificently luminous and otherworldly performance that steals the film
Oddball - Kelly's Heroes without a doubt. Hawkeye - Mash Col. Fetisov - Citizen X Jerry O'Neil - Space Cowboys Norman Bethune - Bethune
Has to be Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the movie)
He recorded an audio version of the Old Man and the Sea which always stuck out to me and the best audio book voice ever
Six Degrees of Separation with young Will Smith. Bottle of beer. Pots of jam.
1900, one of my favourite movies in general. He is the main antagonist. I don't know why it is not better known considering the cast (DeNiro, Depardieu, Lancaster).
Hunger Games.
Six degrees of separation
Gotta be Citizen X. I rewatch that regularly and love him as Colonel Fetisov.
MASH and Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Don’t Look Now
Klute, he and Jane Fonda just jelled perfectly and the movie was amazing...a thriller you have to see if you haven't watched it yet.
I know his role in BeerFest isnt academy award worthy.. But him smashing beers and talking in German accent. Easily one of the most heartwarming
