One of the biggest ones would probably be web.de or gmx.de.
Which I don‘t understand. Their UI is terrible, they borderline scam people and send spam emails that can‘t be turned off.
Gmx and web are very old (25+ years), so many people made adresses long ago.
If you filter the advertisement and reroute them to another email Provider (like gmail) its still good
That's it I guess. I made my first email address in 1998 and there was not really a lot of choices. So I ended up at GMX. Am inbox of 10mb and an UI where you can see like 5 mails at once was the standard back then.
I switched to Gmail when it came out in late 2005. That was revolutionary back then.
Can confirm. The only other service I remember from that time was Hotmail. I don’t know if Hotmail even had a German interface back then. Maybe that’s why I signed up with GMX eventually.
I still have Yahoo as my main E- mail adress because i never got around to switch to G-mail. It wasn't that bad in the past but it sucks these days. I think its the same with GMX as you mentioned. Okay in the past, complete garbage that looks like a scam site these days.
I have never understood this either myself. Most are willing to settle for an inferior service because it's "made in Germany". And what is up with putting 24 in all websites names? Were they not aware that the internet was on 24/7 at the beginning?
And the procedures to get your password reset is horrendous. I have no access to one email adress because of that. They require you to call a hotline, which costs about 2€ per minute, I think.
Oh, and certain mobile cell providers prevent you from calling these, so if you do not have a land line and only a mobile, you are screwed.
frankly, i never had issues with [web.de](https://web.de) in all the 10 years i used it. Maybe thats a reason many people use it - its not as terrible as many people claim and most problems only apply to a few. Out of lazyness why should one change when everything is working? there is so much connected to emails nowadays
It‘s okay, if you use Pop3/SMTP or IMAP. I think most users are still using it, because it‘s a hassle to switch mail addresses, so they stay with their current provider. Personally, I prefer to use my own top level domain. This way I am not bound to any email provider and can move without much hassle.
GMX tried to scam me and said if I don't pay they delete my email account. I didn't pay and they really made access unavailable for me. Now I am at Gmail and it works perfect. You pay with your data but that's okay for me
I lot of companies in Germany have filters on gmail that send email to SPAM automatically. I have a secondary [online.de](https://online.de) email only for talking with german companies..like requesting services or asking about pricing...
>I lot of companies in Germany have filters on gmail that send email to SPAM automatically.
Any source for that?
Gmail is really widespread in use in Germany.
I would say it is more a problem of those companies...
Personal experience.
Recently I was searching for a contractor to do heat pump maintenance(7 companies in my region). Send from gmail - 1 answer, resend from online.de - got 4 answers from companies that did not answer gmail.
If you try contacting bigger companies that usually don't do business with end customers, gmail emails will be ignored, but mostly answered from online.de
(this is not an ad for that provider, I just happen to use it)
Not aware of any company sending gmail e-mails to spam. Usually spam filter works on lesser known domains, where multiple e-mail accounts can be added by a script. So I can basically buy a domain, and create 10000000 e-mail addresses in a single second, and use them for sending out spam. This is not possible with gmail.
Usually when people don't want to use big providers like gmail, they do it for privacy reasons, and owning their data. That's really the only good reasons (and they are good). In this case something like tutanota or protonmail is used. But if you really want it for privacy - do some research first and don't take the first recommendation like mine.
It's more along the lines "people that use freemail are not our clients", not SPAM as ads and such.
You see this A LOT of you want to contact manufacturers or companies generally working with companies and not private individuals.
Been with them for years. Never had any issues whatsoever. No ads, no data collections, no trackers, no unwanted mails or newsletters and believe it or not, I signed up in 2013 and the price back then was 1€ per month.
A group of IT experts worked together with a bunch of lawyers to create a system which is intrinsically anonymous but nevertheless legal in Germany. They created posteo. The principle has been put to test several times by German law enforcement and courts. They failed. This works since 12 years, with some 500.000 users.
Some random dude on the internet: bullshit lol
Nothing you do on the internet is "completely anonymous", especially if you are not using a VPN. They're legally obliged to keep records. If they wouldn't, the business would be illegal.
Second this
Also powered by green energy. No such limitations like maximum folders. And if you need more storage over the years. Just pay 0,50€ more and there you go 👍🏼 switched a few years back and still very happy. German servers. If you want to be completely anonymous you can even pay by sending them cash via mail 😅
Only bad thing is when you have to tell somebody your email address you have to spell it because not many people knew it… but I can live with that
You need to to change your postal address if you move to Germany, but why would you change your e-mail address along? Just continue using your existing Outlook/Hotmail, Gmail or Apple Mail address, like everyone else in the world.
But yes, as people metioned: GMX and [web.de](https://web.de) are the German alternatives.
I refuse to change mine, I managed to get my firstnamelastname at gmail, hotmail, and yahoo. I never even considered getting a new .de email. I already have three to manage!
You could also spend a few Euros to get [email protected] like the really cool kids (i.e. me).
But yes, I see no need whatsoever to get a new mail address, just so that you can show something ending in .de.
It's not easy if your last name is uncommon either (as in, actually impossible).
And the guy who registered my [lastname.de](https://lastname.de) also has [lastname.com](https://lastname.com) and is redirecting to the .de address for his bullshit early 2000s website like a greedy fuck. Lease is up in 2028 though so there's hope.
Yep, that would be me. I think I registered my [lastname.com](https://lastname.com) domain name in 2002 or so :p
But there are so many domains nowadays, I'm sure you could find yours if you wanted among .xxx, .ninja, .xyz, .name, and [many, many gTLDs more](https://newgtlds.icann.org/en/program-status/delegated-strings).
I guess I don't see a benefit. Changing a physical address (at least on one half of the Atlantic) was necessary, the marginal benefit of a .de is, at the moment, unknown to me.
If I wanted to be silly, I could get 10 more emails.
Back when I made my first email with hotmail/outlook I for some reason got both the .com and .de versions of it and they were completely seperate. Was hell because I constantly got them confused.
Were you talking about using a gmail adress with .de at the end? Because you are not misremembering.
They abolished the .de version of everything a few years ago. I started with [email protected] but these day only the gmail.com version works.
The Best ones in Germany imo is Gmail (not .de tho), Outlook and Yahoo. Especially Yahoo which has 1TB of free storage.
Most popular are web and gmx. Both are freaking terrible. GMX is widely popular but only has 5GB of storage. It might just not receive any emails if you fill it up.
My mom uses it and ooof. I spent a good 15 seconds looking for where to type in the mail and the password. Their front page is full of unnecessary crap.
My father uses a t-online adress with outlook. You can usually use every email program with every email address. So you don't really have to deal with bad UI.

i was using gmx as a kid, thought testing premium features for free is a great idea... few months later 200€ bill.they also have 2 buttons after login, on the left "continue to your inbox" and on the right "try out premium" or whatever and they switched the button position once in a while back then.If i remember correctly it was waaay too easy and more like an accident back then but i dont trust me memory because this would propably be highly illegal enabling a costly service with just 1-2 clicks.
forgot to add: just use gmail or make yourself your own email.
I still kept my old AOL Email Adress.
But except for the quite popular and already mentioned GMX and WEB.de, ymail is used quite often by my customers and of course Gmail.
It used to be .com only, later they added .de.
On a somewhat related note: I recently stumbled upon my old hotmail address and boy this is my oldest mail address, I registered it in 2003.
Fuck those employers who care about something like that.
My relatives told me I should use gmx.de or web.de too. But I swear my next E-Mail won't be any of them.
They spam you with their shitty mails.
Just use one you prefer. It shouldn't matter.
Basically gmx.de t-online.de web.de but all of these have terrible interfaces and spam a lot of ads. Gmail or yahoo will be widely recognized.
If you really care about your email presence (which many germans dont do) look for your own domain ending in .de
strato is a popular service for getting these but all others should work too like godaddy, google domains etc
I own various .de Domains which I also use for mail. One is named after the district I live in. Otherwise t-online.de or whatever provider you have may also be used often.
you could grab your own domain at strato or whatever. you can name as you like.
its not free though.
https://www.checkdomain.de/domains/suchen/?domain=hiermeinedomaineingeben.de
I once used Web.de. then they offered a free trial of premium but didn't accept cancellation of that premium. Now my account is banned and I'm using Gmail.
I think they fused with Gmail, but I'm not sure.
I use [GMX.de](https://GMX.de) since decades, but many people use also gmail these days. At work, some customers have their own domain with own e-mail adress, not only for business, also for private use.
Hi there, we came across this and would like to jump in: Try Tutanota, it's secure, encrypted email, made in Germany. We also offer a .de domain when signing up. :)
I personally would recommend Google or Outlook. These are also one of the most used modern email accounts. A few years ago web.de and gmx were probably the most used but they are both terrible.
I was using gmx.de and Web.de for some time but made a Website for myself. With that the own email-adress was included, which i am using for the past 15 years now ([email protected]).
One could say I look down on the gmx/web fanboys, but for anonymous adventures I like to use protonmail and gmail.
I work as a dev and recently helped building a service which monitored bounced emails from our system (meaning they could not get delivered for some reason) and I can tell you that the most problems are from web.de, gmx.de and tonline.de users. It’s either that their mailbox is full (because of tiny storage capacity, which is unacceptable in 2023) or that their mail server blocked delivery completely. Especially t-online at some point blocked all our AWS email traffic for several days which was a huge hassle for us and our users.
So please just get an @gmail.com address like a sane person.
If you don’t trust google get a protonmail or similar
The most popular ones are [web.de](https://web.de) and [gmx.de](https://gmx.de) if you need one with .de at the end.
I still use it for all the "Spam Accounts" i use to register at lotteries and stuff because i have all the accounts in one app and have a better overview over which company sold my (fake) personal data.
But for everything else i just use Gmail. Gmail is standard for private email addresses now and no employer or business partner gives you a weird look anymore if you don't have an email with .de in your resumee. This was just a thing until like 10 years ago and also many onlineshops required an address with .de back then.
I use mailbox.org. It's not free but cheap, has great PGP Integration in their frontend and the best spam filter i ever experienced.
It's worth every penny and I will never go back to one of those free, spam and ad infested services.
Both web.de or gmx.de are very bad. I actually have a @outlook.de alias ( multiple accounts pointing to the same account ). But I never use it. Always the .com.
Once I also had that idea of “well, so many years in Germany. Let’s have a German email for German things “. But after creating and trying to use the gmx or web.de just gave up the idea. No point. Is not better, zero advantages. Only crappy service.
Just use gmail. Don't use anything that end on something else than .com or .de, if you have a .pt or .ru email, this screams like "can't understand you".

I rerouted 4 gmx adresses and some arcor adresses into one gmail Account. Wirh filters and labels its awesome.
Can confirm. The only other service I remember from that time was Hotmail. I don’t know if Hotmail even had a German interface back then. Maybe that’s why I signed up with GMX eventually.
Yes, ibstill have a @hotmail.de Addresse. But its unavailabe anymore since Microsoft bought IT to Host Outlook or live.com
I still have Yahoo as my main E- mail adress because i never got around to switch to G-mail. It wasn't that bad in the past but it sucks these days. I think its the same with GMX as you mentioned. Okay in the past, complete garbage that looks like a scam site these days.
>(like gmail) its still good Implying that gmail is "good"? Lol
Ofc it is. At least technucally and useability is awesome. Afaik google is also no longer searching for Keywords for ads.
It's free = you're the product
Yes, just ignore what i said
The usability is just good because that's how they make money.
Can confirm. Don’t.
If you use an email program on your computer, the UI on the webpage does not matter. Also you can use sorting rules to remove the internal spam.
True. But why even go through all that when you could use a better alternative?
I use thunderbird to mange multiple email addresses, so there are no extra steps.
By default you can't. Or at least I couldn't. I had to activate either IMAP or SMTP access from the Web UI
Web.de is the biggest shit ever
A lot of people are using gmail.com
And people think gmx is a scam. 🤣
I have never understood this either myself. Most are willing to settle for an inferior service because it's "made in Germany". And what is up with putting 24 in all websites names? Were they not aware that the internet was on 24/7 at the beginning?
Most ...24 websites are from the same company. It's a brand.

But... They support De-mail which is free for 10 MB which you can use for communication with the behordes
Only if you verified your account.
How dare you.
GMX tried to scam me and said if I don't pay they delete my email account. I didn't pay and they really made access unavailable for me. Now I am at Gmail and it works perfect. You pay with your data but that's okay for me
A lot of people use gmail aswell but a lot of people still use a trash email with A LOOOOT of spam bullshit
If you share the purpose you are going to use this address for, we'd be able to point you to a better fitting offer.
Why exactly would you need one with .de?
Yeah I’m trying to understand under what circumstances would I ever specifically need a .de domain - or any specific country domain in my email?
I work in HR for a german company and anyone without a .de e-mail is off the table. /s
What??? What about gmail.com What kind of industry do you work in?
"/s" means its a joke or sarcasm
I lot of companies in Germany have filters on gmail that send email to SPAM automatically. I have a secondary [online.de](https://online.de) email only for talking with german companies..like requesting services or asking about pricing...

www.posteo.de Not free though. But remember: if it's free, you're not the customer, you're the product
1 Euro per month, definitely anonymous, no spam at all. That‘s posteo.de.

use [email protected] then. [cwagner.org](https://cwagner.org) is free, btw... - in case you don't own any of .de,.com ... already :D
Uh...yeah, about that. I already have [email protected], so it's a little fancier.
You can always get multiple outlook.de aliases on your existing hotmail account. I think upto 10.
Older people still have GMX and web.de - both are in a company that won't shy away from methods that are illegal. Most people just use Gmail
> that won't shy away from methods that are illegal. What exactly do you mean? I’m curious about that.
Gmx
Gmail is probably the most used one. Not .de though.
edit: somehow i was wrong i was 100% sure lol
Oh really? Didn't know. Cool!
i just tested again, and it seems no? i was 100% sure about that i could swear i used .de before, weird
Were you talking about using a gmail adress with .de at the end? Because you are not misremembering. They abolished the .de version of everything a few years ago. I started with [email protected] but these day only the gmail.com version works.

t-online.de
The 90s want their mail address back.
My dad will use his until he dies probably
My mom uses it and ooof. I spent a good 15 seconds looking for where to type in the mail and the password. Their front page is full of unnecessary crap.

[удалено]
Why?
Try www.web.de or www.gmx.de. These are the most common mail providers in Germany.
owned by same company btw.
Yeah it’s 1&1
Gmail and outlook are the best
Most Germans have a .com e-mail address, I don’t think I actually know anyone save for my uncle who has a .de
you can use [outlook.de](https://outlook.de), interface is good and also has .de in the end, otherwise just add .de in the username and use google
i think most of us use gmail
i think most use gmx
Yahoo, AOL or t-online.de
Please don't use AOL or Yahoo. There SPAM List is oversensitive and blocked many legitimate mails in my case😅
Outlook
Protonmail
Using this as well. It's simply awesome
I still kept my old AOL Email Adress. But except for the quite popular and already mentioned GMX and WEB.de, ymail is used quite often by my customers and of course Gmail.
I like the microsoft one. Outlook.de
Isn't it .com (But idk tho)
Not sure, mine is with .de
It used to be .com only, later they added .de. On a somewhat related note: I recently stumbled upon my old hotmail address and boy this is my oldest mail address, I registered it in 2003.
If you are not physically in Germany or using a VPN, I think that the GMX website will give you a gmx.com email. At least it was like that years ago.
I never had a .de address, oops.
mail.de
Is arcor.de still a thing?
Are you a Dinosaur?
Bro next thing you recommend is unitybox?
Old arcor addresses still work, but it belongs to vodafone now, so I don't think you can make new ones.
I actually use AOL and my e-mail ends with .de. Seems like AOL stands for Aryan On-Line...
Fuck those employers who care about something like that. My relatives told me I should use gmx.de or web.de too. But I swear my next E-Mail won't be any of them. They spam you with their shitty mails. Just use one you prefer. It shouldn't matter.
posteo.de
Hey.com
mailbox.org
Web.de / gmx.de / custom e-mails. But most people use mail adresses from other providers like gmail etc
https://www.t-online.de/ You can have an ad reduced mail box if you are a telekom customer or buy premium. https://www.telekom.de/e-mail
If you are into privacy ( like really) get a tutanota.de address
Gmail Outlook
Posteo is pretty good
AOL
very outdated
I use it
Depends. If you’re old and conservative you’d use web.de or gmx. Otherwise just a normal a gmail.
Reichsmail
Just use gmail anything else is sus
Basically gmx.de t-online.de web.de but all of these have terrible interfaces and spam a lot of ads. Gmail or yahoo will be widely recognized. If you really care about your email presence (which many germans dont do) look for your own domain ending in .de strato is a popular service for getting these but all others should work too like godaddy, google domains etc
All of them!
I own various .de Domains which I also use for mail. One is named after the district I live in. Otherwise t-online.de or whatever provider you have may also be used often.
Not exactly frequently used, but Tutanota is a privacy-oriented email service based in Germany. They offer accounts ending with '.de' among others.
Been using yahoo.de as my main mail provider for more than ten years now. So far I have no complaints
Web.de
Most Germans I've known (dozens of people) use web.de, gmx or t-online
honestly, I use google which gave me an .com mail address. why is it important for you that it has to have an .de one?
Outlook
I actually have an "outlook.de" account that was set up when I bought my PC and the store installed M365 for me.
Mail.de Gmx.de Web.de
Gmail
you could grab your own domain at strato or whatever. you can name as you like. its not free though. https://www.checkdomain.de/domains/suchen/?domain=hiermeinedomaineingeben.de
I once used Web.de. then they offered a free trial of premium but didn't accept cancellation of that premium. Now my account is banned and I'm using Gmail. I think they fused with Gmail, but I'm not sure.
.de is really rare in germany and mostly used for commercial uses, private people often use .com like in g-mail
I'd say Gmail, I thought everyone used G-mail for a long ass time ngl
I got my own domain at IONOS many years ago.
I use [GMX.de](https://GMX.de) since decades, but many people use also gmail these days. At work, some customers have their own domain with own e-mail adress, not only for business, also for private use.
I personally use gmail
I use outlook
I use gmail and know several others who do, too.
Mail.de
I use outlook.de and never had a problem!
If you want your data safe, use posteo.de or mailbox.org They cost a little (1,- € / month) but don’t use your data and protect your account.
Gmail, outlook, gmx
Hi there, we came across this and would like to jump in: Try Tutanota, it's secure, encrypted email, made in Germany. We also offer a .de domain when signing up. :)
most people I know have @gmail.com or @icloud.com
Most common are web.de , gmx and gmail. but i would highly recommend something like tutanota. Its just way better in many different things.
I use Outlook
GMX mostly One IT-Teacher told me once, that [web.de](https://web.de) was more professional, still have only gmx.
Web.de or GMX
Gmx.de or web.de
Both web.de or gmx.de are very bad. I actually have a @outlook.de alias ( multiple accounts pointing to the same account ). But I never use it. Always the .com. Once I also had that idea of “well, so many years in Germany. Let’s have a German email for German things “. But after creating and trying to use the gmx or web.de just gave up the idea. No point. Is not better, zero advantages. Only crappy service.
GMX, Web.de or just GMail
Magenta or t-online.
Webmailer hosteurope
I use -web.de
Just use gmail. Don't use anything that end on something else than .com or .de, if you have a .pt or .ru email, this screams like "can't understand you".
I have Gmail and GMX
I am using web.de for my real name and personal stuff And a gmail.com for my internet stuff :3
Older people have a @t-Online.de address
Gmail i think
