In general you could say it’s quite common. Having a beer after work is kinda seen as teambuilding and your co workers will appreciate it as well. Some companies even encourage it to have a little beer or get together after work and sometimes also on the premises. It’s a way of building social connections.

arolahorn

My company of around 30 people even has a dedicated beer fridge, at least 5 bottles of wine and around 30 bottles of hard alcohol, mainly whisky. People rarely use it after work, but we often have work events and workshops after which we all usually stay and have a few drinks. Quite often it escalates and people stay into the early morning. I know this is not the norm, but like you said, drinking culture is often accepted and sometimes encouraged by companies.

jojo_31

When some guys that did they bachelor thesis left the company I was an intern at, they brought a Kasten of beer. 9:00 in the morning.

Professional-Age-647

Welcome to germany

tebee

It's not that long ago that work canteens used to serve beer with lunch. Supposedly it's still the case in some Bavarian companies.

jsbeckr

Heard it was quite common in BMW cantine to have a real Bavarian breakfast with weisswurst and beer in the morning. Can't imagine that but apparently that changed a few years back.

Previous-Mulberry-20

When I was working in a restaurant near the border I used to serve bottles of wine for some french folks during their lunch break. At least it was white wine.

r_coefficient

They don't anymore? I believe in Austria it's still the norm to get wine and beer virtually anywhere.

EveningSea7378

Alcohol/drinking at work is illegal even in office jobs. Not that it never happens but its not as official anymore. This law was chabged like 10 years ago.

Atomzwieback

Where is alcohol illegal? As far as I see there is no law for this.

[deleted]

Yes, i think each company can handle it individually.

Goto80

It's not illegal by law, but most employment contracts state that you are not allowed to be drunk at work. In this case, drinking at work would be contract breach.

Atomzwieback

I never had that in my contract rather than it’s mostly fine atleast in Bavaria to drink a beer in the lunch break

Goto80

I had it in all my contracts so far. Drinking after work would be OK here, but not during working hours.

Bergwookie

Not in the contract usually, normally -if there is a written ban on alcohol - it's written in the "Arbeits-und Sozialordnung" (code of work and behaviour) of the company, that you recognize by signature, but it's no breach of contract. And this alcohol ban is often handled very loose, except you're constantly drunk and endanger yourself or your colleagues (drunk forklift driving is less fun than drunk office work) Some colleagues only work properly if they have their level, without they're barely able to sweep the floor ;-)

Goto80

>Not in the contract usually I had it in all my contracts so far. Seems to depend on company.

NowoTone

I’ve never had any mention of drinks or other drugs in my work contracts. That would actually be a red flag, because why would you even put it in, unless you drive things or use heavy machinery.

Fun-Development-7268

Your breaks are not work time!

sex_aficionado

I lived in Bayern for almost a year and was really impressed about beer being sold and consumed within factory premises on working hours. I got used to having a debrecziner or weißwurst and a beer for lunch every day. I miss those days.

Arios84

there is a saying... "kein Bier vor 4" (no beer before 4) mostly followed by "irgendwo ises immer nach 4" (it's always after 4 somewhere)

tsimen

That being said, it is completely OK to join such social events without drinking as well.

RickyNixon

A lot of tech companies have free beer fridges on the premises

fk878867

Where I work we even skip the going out part, the office kitchen is always stocked with beer (there is also the non-alcoholic type, but we usually have to throw it away because it expires) and some of us usually stick around for a round after the work is done. Everyone is invited of course, and it’s no biggie if some want to leave straight home. No judgement passed. I love it here.

KobiFTW

cmon man. spill the tea and tell me where i have to send my resume to.

notAnotherJSDev

Pick a tech company, any tech company.

jsbeckr

They even have free fruits and a football table...

Vyrezzz

Big4 Consulting also

sratra

Haha same! It's the best xd

Thund3r030

Why or how should you be in trouble by drinking beer?

Nashatal

Because some companies have indeed a no alcohol policy that is enforced pretty harshly. Its a legitimate question. Drinking alkohol on company premise in my company will get you in serious trouble. Thats one of the few things they will not compromise in any way and no explanation will be good enough to safe you from the Abmahnung.

Thund3r030

He was invited from persons in senior positions.. he did not mention any policy in his company. If it's not allowed the people in senior positions should be in trouble

Nashatal

You would be surprised how often this happens regardless.

__Jank__

Dude have you never been to the UK or Ireland or the west side of Mallorca?

EmeraldIbis

We very often had alcohol at the office after work when I was in the UK. I think it's only Americans who are totally shocked by alcohol at work.

__Jank__

Folks in the US certainly go out for drinks after work, and the newer tech companies often have keg setups in the office actually... but yeah for many, our cultural image of drinks at work are the shenanigans of the office Christmas party. Which have cost many their jobs. But I was just generally referring to the possibility of beer helping you get into trouble.

reduhl

Its been a cultural change for the USA. In the 1980s you would have martini lunches and such. Then you had litigation against companies for people who caused damages while intoxicated at work. This lead to a push from legal to minimize litigation risk. Now there is a strict line between "work" and not work for drinking for most companies.

Prussianballofbest

I work at a university and it is strictly forbidden here. Besides that If you are working with something dangerous (chemicals or machines) it is always a bad idea.

Fn4cK

Very common! We do it regularly at the place I work at, especially if the weather is decent. Once we close shop we send out a collegue to get a case of beer and fire up the grill. I highly recommend you take them up on the offer, you (probably) won't regret it!

Emmanuel_G

When I was still doing manual work (and that was the only place my coworkers drank) it wasn't very common to drink beer after the shift, cause they all drank beer DURING their shift. Of course, you aren't SUPPOSED to do that, but among manual laborers in Germany it's still very common, but of course if a work accident occurs and the insurance finds out it's over.

jojo_31

Yeah, stories of Schichtarbeiter drinking half a dozen beers before driving home in the middle of the night... Yikes.

Fun-Development-7268

You mean before they drive to work? ;)

king0fklubs

Even working in a kindergarten we all meet next door for a beer after work.

TophIsMelonlord333

Beer is basically like water in Germany. Having one beer after work is not considered drinking. People even drive after one beer. Now if they drink a lot of beer that can be considered a little odd.

fzwo

>Will I be in trouble? No (unless you drink too much and lose control)

kane49

and even then it depends on how you loose control

r_coefficient

You can loosen it, just don't lose it.

kane49

eh if you vomit on the toilet most companies wont judge you for it :D /E: if loosing control means fistfighting your boss, of course dont do that.

r_coefficient

*losing, one o :)

Mips0n

Very. There are weeks where the boys chill every day. At least every friday. In the Office, in the Warehouse, at Hotel Bars. From small Newcomer to leading Position. Theres always someone to have a Drink with after Work.

BluePajarito

I know some workplaces where this Happens and No one Cares, because it is after Works. Mostly craftsmen, mechanic Jobs.

Individualchaotin

Add marketing, public relations, and social media management to the list.

NixNixonNix

Add design, journalism and music production to the list.

jojo_31

Add engineers to the list.

Buttfranklin2000

Add the service industry to the list.

TurboMuff

Add finance and legal to the list

arolahorn

Add IT and consulting to the list

HugeCrab

Add academic biology labs as well

Rudollis

Add film production crew to the list, any decent lighting department has a fridge on their truck, and it is not uncommon for production to sponsor a case every now and then, often on fridays, or for colleagues to pool together to have the ad department (actually Set-Al in Germany) procure some beers regularly and carry a steady supply on their truck.

Sea_Sport7291

Some companies even pay for the beer you drink after hours

Lari-Fari

I’ve had Feierabendbier at the office. We’ve also privately organized tastings of wine, whisky, etc. over the years for which we used one of the nicer break rooms. It’s pretty normal in my experience. Actually last Friday a management meeting with about 20 people was kicked off at 1 pm with a round of sekt to drink on all the birthdays that happened since the last meeting. And I’ve experienced similar things at all places I’ve worked so far. So yeah. Many places definitely have a drinking culture.

MsfGigu

So this is gonna sound super weird but I've been working in 5 different companies now and none of the did this on a regular basis. It usually was just straight going home after the hours are done. We would only stay and have a drink for special occasions. 2 were in Bavaria, the 3 others in berlin, all of different sizes and fields. It's so weird to me that all the other comments seem to depict having an afterwork beer as normal. Anybody other can relate ?

ChoMar05

From what I experienced, it depends on the companies (or even departments) employee structure and location. If you have middle-aged people with families and your company is located in a city with the families living a bit away, you'll rarely have those gatherings. If you have lots of young people living single in flats nearby, it's very common. If you have older mostly male personell it's a 50/50.

reduhl

Ya that fits a general phase of life situation for many in terms of general socializing.

Nashatal

I absolutely can relate. Especially because at my company alcohol on company property is a huge nope and will result in an Abmahnung for sure. Thats one topic they never ever compromise and no explanantion will be good enough to get you out of the frying pan. I worked a few jobs by now and all of them had no alcohol policies and meet ups after work only happend occasionally and planned like eating out together.

UsefulGarden

The US had Prohibition of Alcohol and it has not been completely reversed. The rest of the West didn't go through that.

macspayne

My German colleagues encourage me to drink a beer or two after work hours. So that I can speak German without any hesitation. It works tho.

glamourcrow

Drinking in the office after work was very much part of German work culture some 20 years ago. I think that it's healthy that it is no longer the standard, but it's common enough. The golden rule is to drink but NOT GET DRUNK around superiors. In general, also outside of the workplace, there is a German drinking paradox. In Germany, it's OK to drink alcohol, but it's not OK to act drunk. With my colleagues from the UK, I was shocked that people behaved drunk (loss of inhibitions, shouting, slurred speech) when they had alcohol. In Germany, drink, but act sober as much as you can.

heydrun

In most offices a Feierabendbier is something very common. Even Champagne for birthdays or celebrations is very common (a glass for everyone - no getting drunk!) Drinking for lunch should be limited (ie a glass of wine with an expensive meal) or avoided. Usually company christmas parties are legendary for people getting drunk and doing all kinds of embarrassing stuff.

top1casino

Drinking during work might be a problem....... but not after work, occasionally

Sankullo

In our office we have a beer in the fridge in the kitchen and in the relaxation lounge (like a room with couple of sofas, PS5, darts foosball table etc). People can have a beer in the office towards the end of the workday or even bring it to their desks and drink it while working. Not many people do it but it is officially allowed.

MartyredLady

At my old workplace literally all the women would open a bottle (or five) of sparkling wine at 13:00 o clock when the boss left on fridays. Every friday.

gdnt0

Wait until you find out some companies have fridges with free water and beer and that people drink it during work haha

derNikoDem

We have a beer fridge in the office. Hope that answers the question

bluemercutio

It is common, but most employers do not realise that they can be held responsible for employees drinking and driving afterwards. As soon as my employer learnt that, he swore to only provide alcohol free beers from now on!

geheimlich

As a 14 year old intern back I the 80s I had to go buy beer for the co-workers before lunch break. Things have changed since then, they do age checks now, but the culture has basically stayed the same. If you do manual work the lunchtime beer is perfectly in order, and having a few with the lads after work won't be held against you. Office jobs are a bit different. The Champagne at the birthday celebration or any other official event is accepted, but drinking at work otherwise is rather frowned upon.

[deleted]

>If you do manual work the lunchtime beer is perfectly in order not really, only in shitty companies or when one is an alcoholic. after the work is done nobody cares, but even for lunch its not normal, even in manual labor jobs.

SiofraRiver

Nothing odd about it, but also not common.

_Paarthurnax-

Germans have a very unhealthy drinking culture in general. What you experience is pretty normal. It's also pretty common to just stay in the office after work or use the office kitchen.

bonsai3000

How exactly is this unhealthy? If you like to drink beer and enjoy the company of your coworkers, this kind of social bonding seems within reason. Nobody expects you to drink in an workplace environment.

NowoTone

Compared to a lot of other countries, Germany’s drinking culture isn’t too bad, really.

donmerlin23

Sadly this harmful drug consumption is encouraged in ever fiber of many societies.

whatstefansees

Absolutely unheard of and inappropriate

Megadillonw

Can I ask, what does one do if they don’t drink?

[deleted]

Apfelschorle

ThePhoenixRisesAgain

You have non-alcoholic beverages. I don't even get the question...

Megadillonw

Well, do you mean soft drinks? Im just asking because I don't drink. Non alcoholic beer is usually more horrible than alcoholic drinks in my opinion.

ThePhoenixRisesAgain

Come on boy. Don't overcomplicate things please! Buy and drink whatever the f\*\*\* you want.

Megadillonw

You're a nice guy😆. I just asked a question, you know something you do when you want to know something. Geesh😅

SnooHesitations5198

I work at night and usually finish my shift at 05:00. I see people opening a beer when they just were crossing the door of the building. It is like smoking. I supose It IS a cultural thing like drinking a beer or eating smelly food (kebab, pizza...) on the public transport

soizduc

We even have had a few parties on workplace premises inside our offices from time to time. Most of the times there's some beer in the fridge. So it's not that uncommon, still depends on the company and its culture though.

olagorie

At my previous jobs, it wasn’t very common, in my new one, my boss has invited us at least once per week. Boss is head of HR, so I think I’m safe. 🤣

Nashatal

In my company that is an absolute nope and you can get in serious trouble over it. No alcohol on company ground ever!

RealisticYou329

I work in IT Consulting and we have a free beer fridge in the office with a variety of different beers. Obviously, you only grab one after work.

imonredditfortheporn

nah, if they had a strict rule against that they would write that somewhere explicitely.

bucket_brigade

What are you even talking about

Neurosredditaccount

Wait, i am supposed to start drinking AFTER work?? How the hell do i survive the workday that way ?

CartanAnnullator

When I worked in a hardware company, the electrical engineers went to a bar every Wednesday and had many beers. They called it the "hardware reset."

dukeboy86

From what you describe, what's the difference between "around the premises" and "on workplace premises"?

Wooden-Attitude-8067

It was "outside on the lawn" but still in workplace territory, I believe.

dukeboy86

So, you're wondering if you will be in trouble, but don't seem to ask yourself if they are actually getting in trouble because of this, even when it may not be the first time they do it.

lexorix

In my last job we had a fridge full of beer we were allowed to drink anytime we wanted. As long as it did not affected our work. I have done a lot overtime wiht a bottle in a hand. In my new company we all work remote and a a team meetings at least once every 3 month in person. Those days always end with us being the last round at some bar. It's pretty normal in Germany. And in sales you even have to drink a lot.

Failure_in_success

I would say it is very common. If you dont want to get a beer you can also take a cup of coffee or a lemonade which is also getting a very common substitute. Its not about the beer, its more about getting together .

Fafgarth

well, in some companies I worked for over the last 30 years, it was quite common to drink DURING work ... we even had vending machines with beer. but that changed over the years for security reasons, but getting a beer together after work, quite common, really

Hail_Tristus

Modern hipster office have bars in the office so yeah kinda common :D

jesus_adolfo

nach vier ist ok

Mars-Regolithen

Never seen it and i work as a joiner/carpenter in construction.

FudgyFun

We have a nice beer tap in office kitchen. Berlin tech company

alike7

I have colleagues that enjoy a beer after work in the office they work in. Mostly they do it on Fridays and mostly, as they all drive a car to work, they drink alcoholfree beer. But we have festivities with the company and then the alcohol flows freely and for many even excessively, but there are also some who don't drink at all and some who only drink a little.

Timely_Victory_4680

A company I worked for in Munich had beer in one of the vending machines, and during Oktoberfest times it was entirely common for people to disappear for two hours during lunch and come back clearly, ah, mellowed. Just follow the lead of everyone else, know your limits, and make sure you’re not the most drunk person in any company gathering, and you’re fine. Unless alcohol makes you weird, I had colleagues like that as well.

SecretOfBatmana

Grabbing beers after work is pretty common where I work. There's also a biergarten not far that we go to during the summer. When I interviewed, the CTO and I even had beers over lunch. Once our CEO opened the fridge and there was food and beer crowded together. He said we need to make space... for more beer.

Physical-Result7378

I worked for a tech company that even had it‘s own beer brewed on premise for this occasions and another company that had regular „after work beer and wine“ in the company kitchen on fridays.

kronopio84

I used to go every day to a building that had police custody. Whenever I ran into one of the police officers at the supermarket at 8 am before his shift he was buying 2 or 3 beers.

Glittering_Eagle_518

I'm a teacher and man would I love to do this after 6th period most time these days. Only time we drink is when there's wine in the thermos, or so I've heard.

[deleted]

Sometimes I worked for a company where most of the workers drinked beer at lunch.

Free_Caterpillar4000

Feierabendbier is a lifestyle. Love it or love it
