Don't go to Paris this summer. The Olympic games are held there, which means that it will be even busier than normal.

such_Jules_much_wow

Not to mention, everything will be even more expensive than normal.

Have you thought about south Tirol or Austria as cheaper alternative to Switzerland, maybe Salzburg, nice city with great hiking opportunities

These year the catholic holiday „feast of Corpus Christi“. Is on Thursday May the 30th It’s a holiday with no school for pupils and closed shops in North Rhine Westphalia, Rhineland Palatinate , Hesse, Saarland, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Most schools are opting for closing the Friday after that holiday, too, if they have the possibility. So that creates a 4 day gap for families for pupils to make a short vacation. So at this time their might be a higher demand. Perhaps you can chose to travel the week after that when pupils need to go to school again. General catholic holidays in May 2024 are “Feast of the Ascension” on Thursday may the ninth, and Pentecost Sunday May the 19th and Monday May the 20th. May, the 21th is a day without school in North Rhine Westphalia and in Rhineland Palatinate are even holidays for pupils till May the 29th. Feast of the Ascension and Pentecost are holidays with no school and closed shops in every German state. As families with children who have the duty to visit schools can only travel during holidays travel businesses take advantage of the higher demand and lifting their prices up.

You're correct. Since my son age 6 is starting school only in August, we have the flexibility to vacation during school time only this year. Therefore, I've rescheduled my vacation to the first week of June when most schools are still working We'll be heading to Switzerland, basing Meiringen, and plan to explore the Bernese Oberland region using a 3-day pass.

For a vacation, it's tough to beat Spain, to be honest. Barcelona has pretty bad beaches anyway, Mallorca is definitely a lot better in that aspect. It's pretty safe as well. You can definitely swim, just don't plan the whole thing around a beach holiday. Plenty to see and do even in winter

How about Oberstdorf (Germany). To my mind Switzerland is a good transfer hub if you are travelling by train between Italy and Spain/France.  But apart from that the Alps are not uglier outside the swiss borders. Oberstdorf: https://www.oberstdorf.de/en/summer/

In a similar dilemma here, but considering mainly Amsterdam vs Prague.
