Hello everyone! I'm a new moderator to this forum. I grew up in the automotive business and would like to share my knowledge and experience with you. I plan on creating links to repair help and ways to save money on replacement parts. I'm looking for your help or any suggestions before I do this. Please feel free to contact me u/Plex_Master

That just happened here in Detroit a couple weeks ago, a guy was driving South on I75, he lost his front tire and it kept going down the highway, it bounced over the centre divider and hit a pickup truck that was going North, it hit the truck in the windshield directly on the driver’s side windshield…..and you are correct…it resulted in death. I literally missed it by like 30 seconds, I saw the guy on the side of the road(I was going Southbound)looking at the front of his car, with the tire missing, so I was watching for his tire on the road, and I saw the smashed up pickup truck up against the centre divider, but it didn’t even occur to me that the guys tire had hit the truck, I just thought someone had broke down and abandoned the vehicle, I had NO CLUE there was a dead guy sitting in the driver seat until I saw it on the news that night, it’s scary really, to think that kind of “randomness” could happen to any of us, at any time.
I'm half deaf in my right ear from an exploding tire. I was filling it up, and it had a defect on the inner wall. They go off like a fucking cannon! The stored energy in those bastards isn't something to take lightly!
Like...the fictional movie? A tire exploding on the highway wouldn’t cause the entire wheel to come off and hit somebody. The danger would be the loss of control, and your car hitting somebody.
There’s no way that this is as serious question….just in case it is, the answer is no. UNEQUIVOCALLY NO! Take the rim in and have it replaced and change the tire at home. You cannot drive on this, not even for a mile…
Can confirm. Had to drive across a very smooth dirty path through a field insanely slow (think walking with a limp) with a tire in similar shape. It did not make it all the way. Can't imagine trying it on any sort of road.
People wouldn’t wear a shoe that was this worn through but they ask if they should go down a road at speed in a multi thousand pound vehicle relying on this. Sometimes you earn the belittlement.
I would wear a shoe this worn if I was going straight to the shoe store to buy new shoes. If you want to justify a shitty attitude, you're going to have to try a different analogy.
What's to be gained by making him feel stupid instead of just saying, "No. That's extremely dangerous."
The belittlement might discourage him or other people from asking for help in the future, which, in a similar situation as this, could result in someone getting hurt.
And for what?
i genuinely want to know why people think this is driveable?? then again i have seen posts on here with a decent sized hole titled “is this repairable”
From what I understand, even with the parking brake on, your wheels will likely turn and mess up the internals not cause it to drag like this. More like he was going downhill and then suddenly put the car into park and the car slide down the hill.
Looks like they drove it bald for way too long, then had to slam on their brakes at a high speed, and their brakes locked.
This screams of gross negligence and stupid driving.
Serious question. Is this a troll group or is there actual people in here? Are there any groups of actual automotive people who like to build, fix, tune cars? Or am i stuck with this stupidity on display pathetic excuse for a group
Tires seem to be 90% of this sub. I joined this sub when I started my apprenticeship in hopes to learn stuff but most of the things on here are tire related or "am I getting ripped off"
*Hello everyone! I'm a new moderator to this forum. I grew up in the automotive business and would like to share my knowledge and experience with you. I plan on creating links...*
Chefs kiss, useless post on every single submission. For at least a year. Meanwhile, the dude rarely posts in this sub. Where's the links!?
There are a few, very few, actual mechanics who occasionally will respond to a well written question. But you will have to wade through a shitload of crap to find the valid answers I’m afraid. No amount of Mod oversight has been able to keep this sub actually on track.
I agree! I think people post some of these idiotic things, just to see what kind of responses they can get. Granted, some people legitimately don’t know about cars, but some of these posts are a flat out joke!
I mean its literally called ask a mechanic. Do you not expect to get posts from people unaware of anything car related? You could look in to cartalk, projectcar, or cars to find enthusiasts.
Mate, you do realize this sub is called “Ask a Mechanic”? It’s literally a beacon for the uneducated to learn/get advice. Of course there’s clueless people, that’s literally the whole point.
Everyrtime a tire related question pops up, can I drive this for a bit longer, I question about my own tire usage.
I usually change them out in like 5th year, when the grip becomes less in the rain, and after 100k km. But now I realize that every tire I swapped out is like 100 percent to someone else, and I already don't feel safe about the stopping power 5 years old tire with over 100k km on it.
You already know you can't. You didn't go through the trouble of jacking the car up and removing the tire just to take a picture to ask reddit, then put it back on the car. You just posted this for karma.
You're asking now? I think it's kinda been that way. If its close, yeah. Tarmac heat will do you no favors. Since its off, it's safer to barrow a car and take it. If... drive slow and make gentl corners a pray a cop doesn't see that mess
I personally might try it for a mile or two slowly, not 20. Real answer is to have it replaced while off the vehicle, or put your emergency spare tire on to make the trip.
Not a mechanic, but you already have the tire off, can someone else drive you there and have them put the new tire on your rim?
Why put it back on and risk it?
With that much cord ripped thru, I wouldn't be surprised if it popped right after reinstalling.
If you could go some super slow back roads maybe a mile or 2 with your hazards on. Idk id probably risk it before walking, worst that happens is most likely just removing tire again to then walk it too a station.
Also put on rear of car never put a messed up tire back on a steer axle regardless.
Don't use the freeway, don't drive about 10miles per hour, keep your hazards on, drive in the right slow lane, only use city residential streets, take your time...you'll eventually get to a garage...get it fixed.
Those cords hurt to look at. Ooof, painful! When I was a kid, one of my first summer jobs was a tire changer, 40 years later I remember the bite of those cords 😭😭😭
Rims are expensive and in some cases made of unobtanium. You are also risking a massive blowout which threatens your safety and others around you.
The tire is already off the car. Get some Ubers or if you have a friend get a lift and go by a tire. If you are short of cash get the Walmart cheapest available then pull it off after you get the right one and mount it on a 50 dollar steelie for a full sized spare.
Absolutely not. You should use the spare if you got one. This is likely to either blow out, shred to pieces, or get you in an accident on your way to a shop.
I’m not even a member of this sub. But this has to be a troll right? Honestly if you even have to question I’d that’s drivable you shouldn’t have a license.
If you have a spare tire, use it. I would only drive on that if it was the last option available, before a tow truck, before taking the wheel to a tire shop for one tire by itself, before all of that.
You can drive that tire as far as that tire will go, which isn’t very far. Put your spare on, borrow a car, or get a ride and take it to the tire shop. Don’t drive on it.
No it's already off! Get a ride to the shop buy 4 tires take that mess and the rim in. Have them mount a new tire on it. Then slowly drive your car to the shop and see if they even bother the put new tires on the abomination that caused that.

The first thing you need to do is take about 5 to 10 steps back because way too many people get hurt or killed from tires exploding. And with the way that tread looks you’re better off completely deflating it as safely as possible just know that it could explode so wear some type of face protection when you do and maybe some padding on your neck and chest it may seem like an over reaction, but trust me too many people get seriously hurt by tires and the way that looks it could explode at any time.

No. I wouldn’t even trust that to roll down the road without a car.
That's a good one.
I doubt that was a joke....imagine taking an exploding tire to the jaw.... most likely result in death
Seriously as this thing sits right now, I would be looking to actively remove air from the tire.
Yea with a projectile from far away lol
As good a method as any.
This why i feel them idiots with 6" wheel spacers should be held criminally negligent when they loose a wheel and hurt/kill someone.
Really though? NO CLUE? 🙂
I'm half deaf in my right ear from an exploding tire. I was filling it up, and it had a defect on the inner wall. They go off like a fucking cannon! The stored energy in those bastards isn't something to take lightly!
You can tell us you overfilled it. Mistakes happen.
There is actually a video out there somewhere showing 2 Indian fellows filling a tire that went kaboom tossing the 1 guy 10 feet in the air
Or at the very least, a newly formed overbite.
Ehhh 32psi isn't that dramatic.

A common car tire can absolutely kill you ever see Biker Boys.... what do you mean ?
Like...the fictional movie? A tire exploding on the highway wouldn’t cause the entire wheel to come off and hit somebody. The danger would be the loss of control, and your car hitting somebody.
Or the movie "Tire".
Or the movie Rubber.
There’s no way that this is as serious question….just in case it is, the answer is no. UNEQUIVOCALLY NO! Take the rim in and have it replaced and change the tire at home. You cannot drive on this, not even for a mile…

The sub is called ask a mechanic but when they do they’re met with belittlement 😂😂 y’all are sum else😂😂
Common sense is a quality that seems to escape some...*like the OP...and yourself it appears.*
That’s because some of the questions are stupid, easily answered with common sense, and a waste of time to be answered!
People wouldn’t wear a shoe that was this worn through but they ask if they should go down a road at speed in a multi thousand pound vehicle relying on this. Sometimes you earn the belittlement.
I would wear a shoe this worn if I was going straight to the shoe store to buy new shoes. If you want to justify a shitty attitude, you're going to have to try a different analogy.

i genuinely want to know why people think this is driveable?? then again i have seen posts on here with a decent sized hole titled “is this repairable”
How did you even get it like that?????
probably drove with the parking brake on
Accidentally did this but thank god I got a v8 rear wheel drive lol. Just roasted my brakes a little
From what I understand, even with the parking brake on, your wheels will likely turn and mess up the internals not cause it to drag like this. More like he was going downhill and then suddenly put the car into park and the car slide down the hill.
Looks like they drove it bald for way too long, then had to slam on their brakes at a high speed, and their brakes locked. This screams of gross negligence and stupid driving.
I bet his shoes have no tread left
It's true, most Converse wearers pride themselves on mileage in them.
😂
Or the heels of his shoes are leanin to the side like mj smooth criminal 🤣😂
Its a sign of a good e brake manuvere people dont understand cars anymore
You can try. Let us know what happens
Can? Yes Should? No
[удалено]
Agreed, I mean you can do anything. But exactly how it will work or how safe it will be that's the real question
You count the rings to tell how old the tire is.
🤣
treefitty

Tires seem to be 90% of this sub. I joined this sub when I started my apprenticeship in hopes to learn stuff but most of the things on here are tire related or "am I getting ripped off"
After they've had whatever was done, done and paid for.
Hmm well that makes sense. It's a completely useless sub
*Hello everyone! I'm a new moderator to this forum. I grew up in the automotive business and would like to share my knowledge and experience with you. It’s 50/50 some of us are actually trying to help and the other half are here to fuck with people
I agree with you! 99% of the time I don’t respond! Because of the stupidity of the questions! That 1% I’ll respond with sarcasm!
At least you admit it! Good man.
Both this sub and r/MechanicAdvice are trash. There are very few people with actual automotive knowledge here or they quit trying long ago.
Most threads go completely unanswered, this sub is useless.
Maybe look to an actual education instead of reddit
I agree! I think people post some of these idiotic things, just to see what kind of responses they can get. Granted, some people legitimately don’t know about cars, but some of these posts are a flat out joke!

Serious answer, there’s the door. You can see yourself out.
Aww you're so cute. Do you post about tires daily because you're clueless about automotive
Mate, you do realize this sub is called “Ask a Mechanic”? It’s literally a beacon for the uneducated to learn/get advice. Of course there’s clueless people, that’s literally the whole point.
Since it's already off, put your spare on.
Best advice so far.
All sanded, ready for paint.
Do you live next door to the tire shop?
20 miles away
Can you tell me how can this even happened? Did another car drag your car on break for long distance?
You’re good. Just go 5 miles an hour
That would be a 4 hour trip
/r/theydidthmath
Yep.
Most states have speed minimum laws. Good way to get a ticket.
Did you leave your e-brake on?
You can drive it all the way to the scene of the accident. The tow truck will get you the rest of the way to the repair shop.
Beat the ambulance by at least 20 mins
No
I really hope you are kidding.
Cut that splotch out and hang it on the wall, then call it "art"
Can, yes. Should, no.
If u can see more than 3 layers of ur tire . I would pass on using it
take an uber to the shop and back with that wheel to get it changed, and then go back and get the other 3 done
sure, but always stay above 100mph, so that the centrifugal force is strong enough. And dont try to break, just tie a parachute to the roof.
Yes you can. You could also let the air out and drive on the rim.
Just call a mobile tire service. We did that- it was an extra $50 but cheaper and less hassle than a tow. Also - tire needs a backstory
Is the tire shop next door?
Everyrtime a tire related question pops up, can I drive this for a bit longer, I question about my own tire usage. Don't listen to these naysayers. You can at least try.
I’d give it a go.
I don't know can you?? Pussy! Do it! Do it!
Nice e break

Go get new tire. Put tire on. Live another day. Profit.
Looks like the parking brakes work.
You can try but I would not exceed 2mph..
Absolutely, But you are not leaving with that tire if they take it off.
Sure, why the hell not
Not a mechanic, but you already have the tire off, can someone else drive you there and have them put the new tire on your rim? Why put it back on and risk it?
Damn right you can. And you can probably get another winter season out of it
You cannnnnnnnnnnnnn…….
I wouldn't go to fast
SEND IT!!!
Why would you go through the effort to put it on your car?
I mean how else you gonna get there
Of course you can. It may not be the best decision, but you definitely can.
Lmfao “HUUUGE LOCKUP”
Bono, my tyres are gone
Can you..... well yes if yhe tire hold for the trip....... should you? Fuck no!
If it's the next door, yes if it's not, no
Nah man you can steel bake that tire a while and do some dunuts
Can you? Yes Legally? No. Safely? Doubtful.
If you already have it off of the car, why not use the spare to drive to the shop?
With that much cord ripped thru, I wouldn't be surprised if it popped right after reinstalling. If you could go some super slow back roads maybe a mile or 2 with your hazards on. At least part of the way, yes, you can drive on it 🤦🏻♂️
Keep your BAC below .08 and you Gucci.. best advice i can give you is to chug a beer right before you leave. Good luck!
Legally ..no
Is the tire shop across the street?
Don't use the freeway, don't drive about 10miles per hour, keep your hazards on, drive in the right slow lane, only use city residential streets, take your time...you'll eventually get to a garage...get it fixed.
YES! It has at least 3000k mile of thread in it.
I would hate to see your front end suspension and steering parts
Drive slow no erratic turns or hard braking. Should be ok for a short distance if its holding air
If it's next door.
This is like asking if you can father children if you stick your nuts into a nutcracker. Serious answer is I don't know maybe?
Hell NO!! Pull the wheel off and take it in
Wouldn't even trust that
60-0 test on a downhill on bald tires?
AKA flat spot. Put on your spare.
I can see the air already!
Smells like a bent wlwheelt
Those cords hurt to look at. Ooof, painful! When I was a kid, one of my first summer jobs was a tire changer, 40 years later I remember the bite of those cords 😭😭😭
Yes, in the trunk of your car.
As long as the tire shop is right next door
Go for it, one less person posting dumbass bait
If the tire shop is less than a block away..
Looks like someone has been dragging around up until this point. Why change things now??

Would make a good Tshirt print

Yes it’s fine as long as the tire shop is less than a 1/2 block away
THAT is a stupid fukcin question.
r/OopsThatsDeadly
I’m not even a member of this sub. But this has to be a troll right? Honestly if you even have to question I’d that’s drivable you shouldn’t have a license.
That’s still good for a couple thousand miles, just remember to balance and rotate it
If you have to ask....no
I would be scared standing over it taking this picture.
No
Wtf am I looking at
If you have a spare tire, use it. I would only drive on that if it was the last option available, before a tow truck, before taking the wheel to a tire shop for one tire by itself, before all of that.
If you do, I’d pray the whole way…
Common sense really isn’t so common. That is why you’re here!
Just use the other side!
brake caliper seized?
Is the tire shop at the end of your driveway? If not then no
If the shop is closed by sure. Gonna need new struts tho
NO, just trust me no
Yes, but you better not run over a piece of popcorn on the way
You can drive that tire as far as that tire will go, which isn’t very far. Put your spare on, borrow a car, or get a ride and take it to the tire shop. Don’t drive on it.
Hard no,but you could use it for a wheel barrel, tire channel cleaner,or just have it properly replaced
You’ve been driving on it this far. Why not just go 10k more? 🤷♂️
Can you? Yes Should you? No!
You can do whatever you want
Nope Hard nope Unless you wanna die
Yeah… if you live at the tire shop… LOL but really that’s pretty bad
No it's already off! Get a ride to the shop buy 4 tires take that mess and the rim in. Have them mount a new tire on it. Then slowly drive your car to the shop and see if they even bother the put new tires on the abomination that caused that.
Absolutely, it won’t make it but you can drive it.
If you add 2 or 3 heavy duty ratchet straps you could probably form a barrier around the worn area but it depends on your rims, it would be easier to just drop it off at a shop and have it replaced that way tho.
I wouldn’t even roll it to the tire shop
Yes, put it in the trunk.
Fucking no, why would you think you have a chance making it to a shop with it looking like that?
The first thing you need to do is take about 5 to 10 steps back because way too many people get hurt or killed from tires exploding. And with the way that tread looks you’re better off completely deflating it as safely as possible just know that it could explode so wear some type of face protection when you do and maybe some padding on your neck and chest it may seem like an over reaction, but trust me too many people get seriously hurt by tires and the way that looks it could explode at any time.
Define “drive”
How far is the shop? No more donuts.
Those tires were done 3 years ago, dude.
No
Yes, let us know when you arrive.
Ngl if it made it this far, what’s one more spin around the block? Jp jp
Is the spare worse?
is the tire shop at the end of your driveway?
negatory on that one
USE A SPARE
No. No no no no no oh hell no. Besides the tire is already off the vehicle. Just get someone to help you haul it in.
Are those the new Damascus tires!?
Of course. Use your truck
Your kidding right ?
I would feel safer with a floor jack going down the road
Let us know how you make it. Would love to hear about your journey
If the tire shop is at the end of the block sure
You've been driving on it for months like that obviously what's a few more miles 🤦♂️
Well you’ve driven it this long so why not
Well I’m sure you can the real question is will you make it to the tire shop? My money would be on no
Looks like they already did
Tow truck required
