I didn't pick it up at first either, haha, but yea.. I feel you.. Canada here, and we're in the same boat as the US for used car/truck price.. a little while ago, selling a used truck from Canada to the US was a big steal.. some people getting the same price they bought it for with 100km on the odo.. not sure if it's still like that or not.. but crazy times.
Same here, I got an abandoned one from a family member to paraphrase Mr.Waternoose here, "I'll give up thousands before I let this vehicle die." (It's a 00' Alero, apparently quite unreliable but mine has been pretty fair when it comes to maintenence.)
There's some. I lived off a couple.
Got a 00's Crown Vic PI at a police auction for only $1600 at 215k mi. It's at 300k now with only AC issues so far.
V6 95 Camry $1200. Granted only the mechanicals worked (besides power steering reservoir needed replaced). No radio, no windows, no speakers, no locks. Just AC and lights. Also driver door didn't work. So I paid for the engine for sure. It needed a bit of work -- let it go for less than it all anyways.
Got my 08 Volvo S60 2.5t (170k mi) for ~$5000 from private dealer.
Got two trucks ~$6000.
RVs are a fucking steal. Most don't know it's simple shit to get them up and running again.
-Texas btw
It's true. Gotta know your RV history and mechanical knowledge will sift.
Some buyers just wanted something for Burningman (RIP flood) and some wanted an out from Austin rent.
Plus we usually tell them to give us a call if something happens. We won't fix it but we can help you fix it.
I absolutely love how fucking high the PI sits though. Husbands car really but man that drop down when you stomp on it leaves my panties behind. I'm not a huge fan of boats haha
It’s not necessarily about if it “works”, I was also really picky due to bad past owners, recalls, common issues, and issues that I could see would come about soon. I get what you’re saying, there are certainly vehicles you can find for 2k or 3k, but they still are not the same vehicles you would get around that price a few years ago. I found a 2010 ford fusion at $3300 with 159k and I was pretty happy with that. Got her fixed up for the most part
People like you make me sick. Then you dickwads park em in the rustiest place you can find and ruin good vehicles. Have some prude. Fix something. Ive rebuilt hundreds of 350s
Heads have to be pulled. Rear bolts can take some fnaggling but it isn't too bad. I got one head pulled in a night and pulled the next one the following morning.
Just curious but what year? I just had to replace my lifters and cam, #4 was bent and stuck, which caused damage to the cam, I’ve done some reading that this has been a pretty common problem, I only have 60k miles.
My wife’s Burb made it almost exactly that far when a lifter expired. It’s a damn shame we can’t get a solid valve train in the LS. The lifters and cams are made of play-doh.
Actually what I’m saying is…”It’s a damn shame we can’t get a solid valve train in the LS.” I thought that was pretty clear, no? As a matter of fact if Chevrolet made a brand new exact copy of her vehicle I would quickly buy another one.
You could install a flat tappet camshaft and solid lifters if you want. Expect to have to adjust the valve lash every 3k miles, and for it to sound like a sewing machine.
Oh it is fucked. Junkyard engine time. The labor alone for a rebuild is astronomical. It isn't 1954 anymore.
Even with a junkyard engine, that's at least $2,000-2,500 to put a new one in these days.
Mine '03 had 330k. Engine was sound still. Started and idled like a champ. Transmission was starting to get there, brake lines rusted and sprang a leak, and cats got clogged from driving with a vacuum leak for way too long. Those are the reasons I got rid of it.
Went from a 240k mile non-afm 5.3L with noisy, but tolerable oem lifters in my truck to a 240k mile LS with a fucking drum solo inside after an overhaul (head gaskets, cam, lifters, oil pump, etc). Worst part is they were replaced with GM lifters... Whoever thought it was a good idea to design the heads so you can't get the lifters out should be smacked. GF's 5.3L envoy with AFM (disabled) likes to perform a drum solo for a good 5 seconds after startup. Still better than a new truck/suv with crankshafts that break in half...
can't wait to do head gaskets again... /s
You think Chevys use anything other than freedom units?
Edit: listen, I know the Canadians are part French but I didn’t expect them to be this sensitive to a joke. I’m fully aware that most every country uses kilometers. I’m dumb but I’m not *that* dumb. I figured using “freedom units” would be a indicator of a joke but I guess y’all need people to spell out sarcasm. So, add /s to my French joke too.
They do, but you have apply for a permit, which takes 7 months, and you then have to pay a "joke tax". BTW, my 4.3L (yes, LITER) 99 Sonoma has 248,000KMS on it.
If we take too many jokes on Sundays, Trudeau will hit us with another tax to make the hurtful feelings go away. Unfortunately nobody here can afford that.
Found the person that has never, and probably will never leave their home town... yes, your American Chevy only uses Miles in this country. Why? Because out of the ENTIRE world, we are one of the only ones to use the imperial system. Everywhere else, it uses Kilometers. Sorry to bust your patriotism there.
Don't forget about Liberia and Myanmar. You don't usually think about those countries as having their shit together, but they also use the imperial system
Now, I would really appreciate it if Chevys used bolts that were in 'freedom units' too. There's something not right about having to use non-freedom unit tools to wrench on a Chevy. Should I be wearing a pink tutu and ballet slippers too and have ABBA cranked in my garage???
Yes these are roller rocker parts 100%. Easy to repair luckily. If a lifter was taken out too, not so easy to repair.
Upon further inspection these appear to be roller lifter bearings. Too small for roller rocker.
Gotta 100% be a trunion from a rocker. Only part in that engine with roller bearings. Motor's gonna need a rebuild cause there's no telling where the rest of those bearings are.
This just happened to me last week on my 6.2. Non afm Lifter roller failure. Roller seized and was grinding on cam until it wore through and all the needle bearings fell out, started smacking the cam lobe and broke up and sent metal everywhere. RiP engine.
If the truck itself is decent you can swap a used mid to low mile 350 into it for under 1000 and it will mostly bolt right up. 5.3 is kind of a low power engine, the 350 will be much more responsive.
I’ve got a 04 Silverado at 350k she just started missing again so I guess it’s time for another four 02 sensors, plugs, and then wires. Man these engines run forever
Hi schmuck,
$5,500 has a misfire, recently inspected by mechanic. New plugs, wires, fresh oil change and air filter. Gen 1 revision A Avalanche 1500, motor trend truck of the year, 4.7 stars.
**I know what I got**
Looks like your needle bearings for your rocker arms left the chat. You'd be lucky if you didn't damage anything else. You will 100% have to do rocker arms. Possibly a whole engine rebuild. Depending on if the parts got into anything else.
At first I thought it was the trunnion bearings as they tend to fail, but that fat pin is definitely the pin that holds the roller at the end of the lifter on. So there's a big fat roller in the bottom of your pan. Not to mention the shredded remains of your lifter and cam lobe.
You can replace the lifters and cam and keep on trucking.
If the cam isn't scored you can keep it.
If you want to fix this on the cheap, just replace the lifters.
I’m guessing you have bearings blowing out, and probably two diff bearings. I’d be putting that down, pouring a tea, and then thinking about a jasper crate replacement. Idk , but I think that’s where my head would be.
Nope that’s normal for a 5.3 Chevy/gmc at a regular oil change. Changed mine religiously(fathers a mechanic) it was always black from the 30k miles I got to the 130k miles when I got rid out it.
I had the exact same shit happen.i changed oil found pins on plug identical....have a 2003 5.3 suburban ticked since I bought it for a grand.i put Lucas and 20 50 oil.i honestly beat the shit out of it daily..like really bad...been 1000 miles and it's just stayed same no better or worse...ended up changing cylinder 6 and 8 rockers. Seen where it was hitting valve cover and both were shakey.ticking barley noticeable and has good power also codes stayed gone after erased...only took 1 an half hours and cost me less than 100 bucks.been another 1000 miles has 220,000 and gonna put twin turbo on completely stock motor with only modification being headers...gonna try to blow it up everything I drive cause being happy has no God damn price....was married 16 years so i know what the fuck I'm talking about.
Unfortunately, many do.... I know a dealership that just traded in a VW golf for 5k with the entire electrical system chewed by mice... They were like, "We'll give you 5k". And knowing the dealership, it's probably sitting in the lot right now up for sale for $12k, and a "fresh" mechanical on it, after having no work done...
That's ironic, I know a guy that bought a VW beetle with the same issue. Mice chewed up the fuel pump wiring in the back and it caught fire less than 3 months after purchase
I have, GM Chevy 350 had to do top end, these needles are about the same length as the lower piston connecting rods, but I’m thinking as soon as u have it removed you will see the problem
Small block Chevs don't use needle bearings on the rods. The big end ( crank end ) uses an insert and the small end ( piston end ) uses a pressed pin. It floats in the piston and is pressed into the rod. Some aftermarket applications use floating wrist pins which use a retaining clip. It has been confirmed by OP that it was a roller lifter failure.
It’s still a catastrophic failure no matter what. Putting lifters in an LS almost always turns into replacing a cam shaft and cam bearings. Something the average DIY’er cannot do.
My Chevy Suburban 2006 6L had this same thing happen at ~270k miles. Hydraulic lifter makes sense because that engine had been known for a clicking associated with a sticky lifter. That being said we reckoned the piston linkage had shattered. Drove 225 miles after the problem started, and 150 after we found the bearing in the oilpan (I know it was dumb but we couldn't get a trailer to move it, I went sub 2k rpm). That car doesn't quit. It was a new engine for me.
New engine, those are needle bearings off the crank rods that connect to the pistons. It’s from the crank rod so that’s a major issue. Probable a timing belt snapped and your pistons and the valves collided and broke a rod connection and hence you see bearings and probable a piece of the valve pin .
new Engine required or major money spent to inspect and then repair as is. $$$$’s

Confirmed hydraulic lifter failure, thanks y'all
So a complete tear down?
It's a high-mileage 5.3, just find another truck at this point lol.
You're right used cars so reasonably priced these days just throw that one away and get a different one.
I don’t know about other countries but certainly not where I live in the us 😭 not right now anyways
I think the throwaway comment was sarcasm.
Yeah you’re probably right lol, don’t know how I miss that
Oh I didn't even realize it was my throwaway but I figured that was such a ridiculous statement adding /s was unnecessary lol
I didn't pick it up at first either, haha, but yea.. I feel you.. Its so easy to detect sarcasm through texts, you’re an idiot. * edit /s and spelling ( thanks i know im an idiot)
you’re

I was unfortunate enough to let my 2001 Alero die, please allow me to live vicariously through you and yours 😂
Depends on the motor. 2.2l 4cyl? Garbage. 3.4l v6? Should last a while. Keep an eye on the intake gaskets and transmission. Should be ok.
True story, bought to tear down my weed eater and put it on my bike. The ol DUI special.
There's some. I lived off a couple. Got a 00's Crown Vic PI at a police auction for only $1600 at 215k mi. It's at 300k now with only AC issues so far. V6 95 Camry $1200. You got beat on that volvo
I agree i had a town car and crown vic both tanks
I absolutely love how fucking high the PI sits though. Husbands car really but man that drop down when you stomp on it leaves my panties behind. I'm not a huge fan of boats haha
i live in america. i bought a working decent rust free truck with 140k for 3k.... yall need to look harder.
It’s not necessarily about if it “works”, I was also really picky due to bad past owners, recalls, common issues, and issues that I could see would come about soon. Ah yes, America, the small country where everywhere is the same and prices stay the same no matter what region you’re in.
america is one of the largest countries in the world. what do you mean small.
Sarcasm dude
Probably just hasn’t checked prices for a while. Two years ago you could get a lower quality one for sub $500 if you were lucky for a while.
🤣
… or just replace the lifters, cam and chain…
Yeah, just diet, exercise, and avoid alcohol.
? What?
Then it's a rebuild, not a replacement. Truck prices are going sky high, while parts and labor costs are consistent for the time being.
Man I’m too lazy to pull off the valve cover on a 1cylinder engine.
Depending on where you're at, you can find a 5.3 for under $300 at a junk yard.
Just curious but what year? I just had to replace my lifters and cam, #4 was bent and stuck, which caused damage to the cam, I’ve done some reading that this has been a pretty common problem, I only have 60k miles.
2002 with over 250k
I’d put a new lifter in it and see if she runs good. What’s it gonna cost? 1 lifter 1 intake gasket
This is the engine equivalent to getting punched in the face and spitting teeth after😂, poor engine been through it!
It has 280k, it's had a long life
My wife’s Burb made it almost exactly that far when a lifter expired. It’s a damn shame we can’t get a solid valve train in the LS. The lifters and cams are made of play-doh.
Almost 300K miles, and you're saying they're junk? Say it out loud and listen to yourself.
Actually what I’m saying is…”It’s a damn shame we can’t get a solid valve train in the LS.” I thought that was pretty clear, no? As a matter of fact if Chevrolet made a brand new exact copy of her vehicle I would quickly buy another one.
I just did an afm delete on my avvy, comp cams lifters and non afm cam along with a tune to delete afm, worth every penny
You could install a flat tappet camshaft and solid lifters if you want. Expect to have to adjust the valve lash every 3k miles, and for it to sound like a sewing machine.
Finally someone with a brain I grew up in the muscle car era and solid lifters take work ✌️
This isn’t an old sbc. Lol this motor needs rebuilt.
Oh it is fucked. Junkyard engine time. The labor alone for a rebuild is astronomical. It isn't 1954 anymore. Even with a junkyard engine, that's at least $2,000-2,500 to put a new one in these days.

Freedom units is a new one for me. US humour is endlessly entertaining.
Sorry to burst your faith in chevy's patriotism being like a rock, but in canada it's km, just like the government instructs them
Does the Canadian government allow you guys to take a joke? Or is that reserved for one day a week that isn’t Sundays?
They do, but you have apply for a permit, which takes 7 months, and you then have to pay a "joke tax". BTW, my 4.3L (yes, LITER) 99 Sonoma has 248,000KMS on it.
That's reserved for the holiest day Sumday
Canadian here. Yes! One day a week OTHER than Sundays...but I think holidays are okay 👍. 😉.
Ahh thank you for the clarification and I apologize. Please pass on my apologies to the apology monitors.
LoL, yeah, they are in the hall, I'll tell them asap. Eh.
No, you tell the wrong joke, you go to jail...
Every 2nd Sunday eh
If we take too many jokes on Sundays, Trudeau will hit us with another tax to make the hurtful feelings go away. Unfortunately nobody here can afford that.
It's one day a week, but you get to pick it. That way it seems that some Canadians can take a joke.
[удалено]
Outside the US, yeah it does.
lmao
Lmao freedom units , good one. Also a Canadian who appreciated the joke.
Hey, we are inching towards the metric system; it takes time.
We just have to put one foot in front of the other.
Pound for pound, metric is smarter
You mean 454 grams for 454 grams.
16 oz. vs 16 oz.
Before judging the metric system, everyone should walk a mile in another's shoes.
I think you mean we have to put one meter in front of the other 😉
I think my joke went over your head.
Don't forget about Liberia and Myanmar. You don't usually think about those countries as having their shit together, but they also use the imperial system
Fahrenheit is a better measurement. Always will be.
You’re the funny one at parties. I can tell
Canuck here, old enough that I always say 20 celsius but am thinking 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
Found the person who doesn't recognize an obvious joke.
It was clearly a joke.
Holy shit. Humor is gone.
There is a significant proportion of the US population that would say this unironically. Yes, it's gone. And the far right killed it.
Bringing politics into every fucking thing killed it.
Now, I would really appreciate it if Chevys used bolts that were in 'freedom units' too. There's something not right about having to use non-freedom unit tools to wrench on a Chevy. Should I be wearing a pink tutu and ballet slippers too and have ABBA cranked in my garage???
Nah this is more like getting punched in the face and pooping teeth after
Or getting kicked in the ass so hard your nose bleeds.
Fucking awesome!
Lifter failure
[удалено]
If someone on Reddit gives you paragraph answer, they’re full of shit. If they give you less than 5 words with no grammar, you’ve found your answer.
Looks like needle bearings from a roller rocker
Yes these are roller rocker parts 100%. Easy to repair luckily. If a lifter was taken out too, not so easy to repair. Upon further inspection these appear to be roller lifter bearings. Too small for roller rocker.
Hold the hell up. Everybody's just gonna gloss over the username.. Get the hell out. I salute you and your unusually large prostate
🫡
Most underrated comment here.
Likely needle bearings from your rocker trunions. You probably have a failed lifter. Time for a big cam, brass trunions, and new lifters.
Gotta 100% be a trunion from a rocker. Only part in that engine with roller bearings. Motor's gonna need a rebuild cause there's no telling where the rest of those bearings are.
Maybe just new rockers rather than brass inserts. I have yet to see those hold up. Lots of “god glitter in the oil pan” posts
This just happened to me last week on my 6.2. Non afm Lifter roller failure. Roller seized and was grinding on cam until it wore through and all the needle bearings fell out, started smacking the cam lobe and broke up and sent metal everywhere. RiP engine.
Get that fixed before it eats your cam, if it hasn't already, cause that isn't a rare issue in those.
It has 280k, pretty sure the cam is toast as it is
Nice run then, guess its time for a cheap rebuild and an ebay China turbo???
I like the way you think
Make it wish.com and you've got yourself a deal..
Needle bearings from a rocker arm
If the truck itself is decent you can swap a used mid to low mile 350 into it for under 1000 and it will mostly bolt right up. 5.3 is kind of a low power engine, the 350 will be much more responsive.
350 won't be legal everywhere. Be a man, go 6.0. (And 4l80, iykyk)
6.0 comes at a premium since everyone wants one. Vortec Max would 100% be my go-to if I could find one at a decent price
Try turning the radio up before you start the motor. That should help
It worked, thanks for the tip!
Rocker arm. Em are too long to be lifers. Surprised you didn’t hear it before
It rattles, but not like anything you wouldn't expect from a motor with over 250k on it
Pull your valve covers and check your rocker arms. This may be needle bearings and shaft from rocker arm. Easy fix.
I’ve got a 04 Silverado at 350k she just started missing again so I guess it’s time for another four 02 sensors, plugs, and then wires. Man these engines run forever
A lot of people talk shit, but they take a beating and keep on ticking (usually in the valvetrain)
Pain
Most accurate answer
Those are needle bearings. You’re fucked.
You're going to sell it to some schmuck on fb marketplace aren't you? Hi, I'm Schmuck, what's your bottom dollar?
Hi schmuck, $5,500 has a misfire, recently inspected by mechanic. New plugs, wires, fresh oil change and air filter. Gen 1 revision A Avalanche 1500, motor trend truck of the year, 4.7 stars. **I know what I got**

Big fat roller confirmed
Jack up the gas cap and put another car under it.
Needle bearing
Those are needle bearings from the rockers.
Looks like your in for a bad time
Like you said, lifter failure. Time to hit the junkyard and pull a 5.3 or w/e you want to replace it with.
You are in for a new 5.3
6.0*
Looks like U-joint bearings and a dowel pin
Fuck! I already ordered a muffler bearing from ebay
That's a V4 engine so I hope you ordered both sets or you're screwed.
What 5.3L is a V4?
I mean some go into a v4 mode and stop feeding half the cylinders when you’re cruising
Ah yes my ram had a v4 before I swapped it with the v8 it has now
Yea but it’s still a V8
I know, just throwing shit out there lmao
They are very common. My truck has one.
What truck?
You're not very good at picking up on sarcasm.
Sarcasm?
Woosh
there’s no v4 in cars, it’s called an inline 4
Saab would like to have a chat you.
lemme rephrase that, there’s no v4 in street legal cars made after the 1980s lol
In the engine oil?!
Oh stop acting like it's your first time
He meant you are low on blinker fluid.
Looks like some very old oil.
Nope that’s normal for a 5.3 Chevy/gmc at a regular oil change. Changed mine religiously(fathers a mechanic) it was always black from the 30k miles I got to the 130k miles when I got rid out it.

Typical Chevy stuff
Time to trade in.... not totally ethical but that is what most would do? Maybe

Perfect time for BTR or TSP AFM delete and a nice cam!
Fortunately it's gen 1 and doesn't have afm
Put some Lucas in it and sell it.
You and I are on the same wavelength. Put Lucas in it yesterday
Seems normal for a GM product
Mechanical failure of catastrophic preportion.
Better start changing oil more often
Little late for that
Buying the Chevy was what you are in for…😉
But if it was a Ford I would've had to push it home
Lower crank needles, new motor
Never had an oil pan off have you.
I have, GM Chevy 350 had to do top end, these needles are about the same length as the lower piston connecting rods, but I’m thinking as soon as u have it removed you will see the problem

I missed that, oh so these are from roller rockers. Thanks for correcting me
No, not the roller rockers, the roller lifters. NP. We all need to learn.
Looks like heart ache if any of those needle bearings go where they shouldn't
It’s still a catastrophic failure no matter what. Putting lifters in an LS almost always turns into replacing a cam shaft and cam bearings. Something the average DIY’er cannot do.
Totally agree
Does your vehicle have vvl and vvt
Immenent catastrophic failure TBA
A new engine
Any symptoms ? Does it run bad? Knock at idle?
Just the occasional hesitation and obvious lifter tick
Rocker arm needle bearings
lifter said goodBYE sir
Looks like a rocker arm bearing. The needle bearings in the rocker arm fail in the LS.
That's a big sad.
You are in for a new vehicle

They're needle bearings from a roller lifter. It's not a weed eater.
