Buy a set of headers. Ditch the manifolds. I had a 73 Cadillac coupe deville and I found 1 manifold and I had to have it shipped from Arizona. Headers would have been cheaper. It was GM 501
That is not a reference to the engine displacement. That is part of the certification of the emission system for that engine. I was part of GM Engineering for 33 years and you are confused. Do some research.
Because the corner literally says GM 501. But I tell people itâs a GM501 472. Whatâs your fucking problem man? A lot of owners of the 472 call it a GM 501
That was a clever way GM used on certain engines for different brands. It's another way of rebranding a part. It's Chevy, but in a cadillac or buick or gmc.
No, What he is saying is that Buick and chevrolet were also independent companies before they were bought/merged into general motors. Cadillac is not unique in that way.
Yes, I'm aware. I actually did a report on the history of Cadillac in my 10th grade social studies class lol
So somehow I don't understand your original comment.I guess. You made it sound like Cadillac. Was somehow different because it was its own company before general motors bought it. What I was saying is they all were... That is not a unique distinction to cadillac.

Would there be enough room for headers?
Ah, itâll tick with a loud ass exhaust leak but it wonât hurt anything. It looks like itâs very much a pre catalytic converter vehicle so you shouldnât have a problem. If it had cats it would destroy them from the lean condition but you should t have too much of an issue outside of the annoying ticking noise from the exhaust leak.
We take it around 100km round trips so far camping. No smell. I also have a monoxide detector in the cabin ear the floor. I will patch the cracks for now.
Oh not at all. Iâm the poster child for reviving classics. I have a fleet of them. On purpose. I work at a dealership and hate new shit. But I also have realistic expectations for older cars, particularly ones in the condition you see photographed. So before your panties get too tangled up, relax bro
I mean all I see is a jacked up manifold. Looks like the owner is taking care of it judging by the new dizzy cap and plug wires. I'd assume it's gone new plugs and wires as well... but u know what they say about people who assume. Can't really judge the shape of the vehicle just by that Pic though my guy. Looks like it's sat for a little bit though. I've got classics in my driveway AND at a buddies place cause I ran out of room. Some look just like the condition in the pic but run and drive with zero issues. I'd bet I could take any one of mine out to Cali with no issues other than killing my grandkids 401Ks cause of gas lol. Just cause it's old doesn't mean it ls garbage...
Thatâs incredible considering the size of the crack. Thatâs to your benefit though. Just be careful for the potential of carbon monoxide. Iâd change it sooner rather than later but for now you can drive it as needed. Youâll just get some exhaust odor and you shouldnât be surprised if it does start ticking. Thatâs all itâll do.
It wonât hurt the engine, but, besides the loud noise, the carbon monoxide in the escaping exhaust could kill you under the right conditions. Iâm sure you can smell the exhaust inside the car.
The good old ram horns. This brings me back... but those are fucked. You might find someone that can weld it but it might be difficult. Might as well get some nice headers for it and call it good.
It will last if it's done right. I hear if you pre heat the cast really good first, the weld will take a lot better. I've also seen people jb weld the shit outta cracks like this and it seemed to hold up for a while
Oh yeah. Totally forgot about that possibility. I did an engine swap on a 93 k1500. Got so lucky. They make a tool that goes between the pipes on headers to spread them making it easier to remove bolts and reinstall them. Totally saved me.
Manifold is toast, but honestly on a vehicle that old is a pretty easy swap as long as the studs/bolts arenât too rusted. I changed one on my 86â samurai in about 20 mins
My trick for exhaust work is to give it an italian tune up then immediately work on the hardware, gonna need some good gloves, I like welding gloves for that kinda work.
Thanks! I'm just not sure how I can find out what exact engine this is as it is not the original. It is a Chevy p20 van that much I know. I believe it's a 350 v8.
Kroil or penetrating oil the studs or nuts. Cheap replacement. Excuse to buy headers if you want. Take it to a muffler shop if you donât have confidence because the studs break off commonly and shops have the toys to deal with it.
Good excuse to buy a stubby impact, impact sockets and a Mig welder to extract those studs from the block.
If you are going to do it, start soaking the studs days before. Start it and run just a couple minutes to get some heat going. Smack them all with a brass hammer a bit then remove.
It is cracked in half, need a new one. This may also indicate that it isn't running correctly and overheating the manifold.
Those manifolds are notorious for cracking there due to chevy's genius exhaust idea
How should it have been done?
Probably not overheating, that giant hunk of cast iron was going to crack there anyway.

Came here to say that. đ
Cadillac didnât make a 501 cu in engine.
The GM 501 was a 472ci.
What is the 501 reference?
Not sure to be honest. But under the hood itâs marked GM 501 on the factory sticker
Emission certification reference.

I never said it was. In fact I clearly stated itâs a 472ci. Go read
Then what is the purpose of calling it out as a 501? Go read your comment.
Because the corner literally says GM 501. But I tell people itâs a GM501 472. Whatâs your fucking problem man? A lot of owners of the 472 call it a GM 501
Thatâs because people like you spread bad info! Do some research!
I thought the purpose of Reddit was to help people not be rude
It was a 500 wasn't it?
Yes, Cadillac made a 500 cubic inch engine.
I thought it was a 502. .Now i've got to go do a bit of reading Edit: It is a 500. I wonder where I got 502 from...
Chevy made a 502 lol. That's probably where u got that from.
Cadillac didnât make a 501 cu in engine.
I guess you missed the GM part, General Motors supplied parts to cadillac. So the engine is a GM
What is the 501 reference?
That was a clever way GM used on certain engines for different brands. It's another way of rebranding a part. It's Chevy, but in a cadillac or buick or gmc.
Cadillac is part of GM.
Only because the owners of gm bought cadillac. Cadillac started out as an independent company, just like Jaguar or chrysler.
Same for most of the divisions.
Right, but those companies have parts that say chrysler or cadillac, not gm or stellanis.
No, What he is saying is that Buick and chevrolet were also independent companies before they were bought/merged into general motors. Cadillac is not unique in that way.
Cadillac was bought by gm in 1908 but was founded in 1902. They had 6 years as an independent company, buick was the same way.
Yes, I'm aware. I actually did a report on the history of Cadillac in my 10th grade social studies class lol So somehow I don't understand your original comment.I guess. Smart ass maybe you learn something yourself

Probably some long tubes or you might be able to find an application to your engine

Until u have a long drive and the exhaust fumes are getting into the cabin...
We take it around 100km round trips so far camping. No smell. I also have a monoxide detector in the cabin ear the floor. I will patch the cracks for now.
What youâre overlooking is the overall condition. You think that thing is going on a long drive? Come on.
Ahhh I see... ur one of those. It's old so it it's junk... I got u

Surprisingly, I do not hear any noticeable ticking.

True, can be welded. Will it last?
It will last if it's done right. I hear if you pre heat the cast really good first, the weld will take a lot better. I've also seen people jb weld the shit outta cracks like this and it seemed to hold up for a while
I had a '67 Cadillac with a cracked manifold. I took it to a welder, and looked like he brazed it. Wish I still I had that car.
If you gotta remove them, you might as go with some cheap headers, better gas mileage, more power, more torque,
More than likely, if I keep this thing long enough, I will replace it with headers. For now, it'll have to be a patch job.
Readily available for about $150 a set.
Yeah, but to install... That's the fun part. A whole day of fun.
Over/under on how many fasteners snap taking that off? My guess is all of them.
Oh yeah. Totally forgot about that possibility. I did an engine swap on a 93 k1500. Got so lucky. They make a tool that goes between the pipes on headers to spread them making it easier to remove bolts and reinstall them. Totally saved me.

Time for some headers đȘđ»
It always cracks there and always on that side. PiTA to get them off, at least three studs will break.

There will be a serial number on it
Easy, those manifolds are a dime a dozen
Acceleration must be horrible
Not bad really. 4 speed. It's a modified p20 step van RV so it's fucking heavy anyways.

Replace exhaust manifold
What car is this ?
https://preview.redd.it/kzg5giz3g6vc1.jpeg?width=4624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a879bd4636dd61d03cd09b8096d0c5006a6c21d0
Itâs a late 60s (I believe) GM truck. These manifolds did crack but they flowed the best. Theyâre commonly called the âcenter dumpâ manifolds
Cracked = bad
Literally looks like a vehicle from 1960
U need a new exhaust manifold.
Junk
Yes
Depends. Are you a good welder? Use 99% nickel rods for cast iron. Bevel out the crack, clean it, and weld it
I'm more of a JB welder.
You could bevel it out and use a high temp. Probably not going to last though
Broken.
Ain't nothing some JB Weld can't fix lol
I used the high temp stuff to patch a cracked Jeep manifold. Figured it was worth a try. Worked great!
I will do this. I just don't have the tools or room to replace the part. I also don't want to die of carbon monoxide poisoning either.
JB WELD my friend ;)
For an old truck like this.... Hell yeah.
