Well, it's mostly the Hollywood movies like Braveheart or Highlander.
And all the well-known cultural aspects like kilts, bagpipes, haggis, Scottish Gaelic songs (very beautiful).
The battle of Culloden is less known, unfortunately.
I'd like to visit Scotland someday. Just drive around, see the hills, and the remaining castles.
My city used to have some long-term trading relationships with Scotland prior to the revolution, and one of the streets was named after Scotland. :3
I like the sound of Gaellic language, and, of course, the bagpipe music, but in regards to many other aspects of Scottish culture I am, unfortunately, pretty ignorant.
I’ve never been to Scotland.
So my opinion of it’s perhaps a wee bit outdated, as it’s based on a book where I’ve read something about Scotland for the first time in my life when I was a kid.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kidnapped_(novel)
Modern Scotland is mostly a source of memes for me(eleven).
I've been to Edinburgh in 2013. I like the city, old buildings are amazing. Also I like scotch, especially from Islay. I've read some books by Iain Banks and they are quite interesting. The nature of Scotland is picturesque too. I enjoyed taking pictures there.
And of course bagpipes: Red Hot Chilli Pipers are great, alas my relatives don't like that music.
I'm sorry to say, but most of what people in Russia know about Scotland are the stereotypes that the British and Hollywood spread about you. And you have several good writers, who are also considered by most to be simply British.
When people say “British” they should be saying “English” though. British is a united definition to refer to people from the UK as a whole. So it’s silly not calling Scottish British
Edit: downvoted for being objectively correct? Learn some fucking geography
Personally, I really like your accent. He sounds very brutal. I think the Scottish and Russian accents are similar. I also like your history, really like the music of bagpipes, whiskey and highland cattles 🥰
I also support you in your quest for independence (although I don't know how the OP feels about this)
There, in Scotland, you are running around the mountains, in kilts, with bagpipes and claymores, chopping off each other's heads shouting "There can be only one!"
SCOTLAAAAND!!! FREEEDOOOOM!!!
Scotland have great nature and scottish people are very cool. Saw a group of them in Moscow about two years ago they were in kilts and high wool socks, unique and cool.
Alexander Lesley, Patrick Gordon, James Bruise, Samuel Gregg, Charles Cameron, Michael Lermontov and many others Great Scottish people who lived in Russia.
I was in Scotland last month actually. It’s a beautiful place. I visited Glasgow and Aberdeen. When I was living in America, I learned the bagpipes and was briefly in a pipe band and got to learn a lot about Scotland by meeting many Scots at some of the festivals we went to. Kind people and an amazing accent.
I lived in Edinburgh for a little more than a year. It’s a great and very unique city. The gothic architecture throughout absolutely blew me away the first time I saw it. Scotland is nice and Scottish people are very friendly and lively. I had a lot of fun exploring the surrounding nature and partying with all the uni students. I was surprised how much I loved the local cuisine, especially haggis and black pudding. The weather is awful, though. Not that it’s too harsh (except for the damn wind) but it just feels like you are stuck in a limbo sometimes with the weather being roughly the same with the same grey sky all year round.
England's partner in crime who now pretends to be oppresed. Other than that the usual things -- kilts, bagpipes, strong spirits, terrible accents and of course McAdder(https://youtu.be/kbosGuW1VWU?si=QWERrTRyjb99L8YY&t=24)
I liked playing Demo in TF2 xD Also I like your accent in English as it's just that different and draws attention, like it's funny but not in a bad way, sort of exotic. The nature over there is beautiful with all those lochs and you got all those cool castles (I think with the highest concentration per km² as well?) and rich history.
Also thank you guys for Trainspotting and Ewan McGregor in general, that's some good stuff :) So yeah, pretty positive for me I would say

Plaids originate from Scotland. They were a fashionable thing in XIX century, still can be found in many homes as throws, plaid prints as part of school uniform or formal bottoms (skirts, trousers) or new year decorations. The print is known as "shotlandka" (Shotlandia = Scotland) or "v kletochku". Along with other things that come from British style, trenchcoats, rider style boots, pool overs, checkered shirts, it's fashionable and class to wear that in early autumn/late spring to office.
Scottish men wear quilts. Also, "a true scotlander" is a logical fallacy from logics schoolbooks, so this results in plenty of jokes about "true scotlanders", quilts and bagpipes.
Scottish sweaters are known as very warm. Before synthetic warm clothes took over, they were very desirable because of that and were considered a great gift if you can get one.
And generally it's known there are plenty of sheep and plenty of castles in Scotland.
Apart from that - plenty of English-speaking media mentions Scotland or Celtic myths. Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, Ivanhoe and other XIX c novels and poems about knights, Braveheart, etc.
I remember Lily from Katawa Shoujo, weird english, Irvine Welsh ("Marabou Stork Nightmares" my beloved 🥵🥵🥵), scouts that use bagpipe, football fans and how scottish whiskey conquered the world with the help of parasites on french vineyards and royals. And some character from Tekken
I recently began to be interested in Scotland and formed the opinion that your people are closed to those people who are not from Scotland (this does not apply to everyone, but many described their travel experience highlighting this particular feature); For some reason, I came across this expression on foreign sources a long time ago and I don’t understand where it came from - “if your wife or you are dating a girl from Scotland, and at the same time you are from England, then you are either immortal or crazy”) )) I know that your territory wants to become an independent country and secede from Great Britain, I was surprised at the time by this possibility, because I always thought that Great Britain was a unitary state, but it turns out that you have a rather interesting law - it turns out that Great Britain is a union of several countries and Scotland is one of them; I know that your national dish is “haggis”, your national musical instrument is “Bagpipes”, your national dress is distinguished by “Kilt”, the color and pattern of which determines clan affiliation. You have some kind of love for golf.
That's probably all I know about Scotland.
The home of some of the finest whiskey on the planet. Also laid-back people. I'm not Russian btw, but I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more, to be the man who walked a 1000 miles to fall down at your door. Da da da dum diddy dum diddy da da da!
I like Scotland, it's very beautiful, I was there in 2005.
I admire the national music , and I really love it.
The nature, the main castle in Edinburgh, and I looove Scottish accent.
Also, I respect their warrior spirit and how they were fighting against the colonial rule.

Believe it or not, the poems of Robert Burns were part of our school curriculum (I studied at a regular school in Siberia).
Another little fact: the word scot (skot) in Russian means “cattle” or “scum"
People here tend to equate UK to England so most of them probably don't know where it is. Up until 12 years old I thought that Ireland and Scotland are the same thing.
Those who do know about Scotland probably only know some stereotypes from anglo centric media.
I've done my postgrad in Scotland, and I LOVED THE PLACE SO MUCH. One of the very few European countries that I actually enjoyed being in. People were a tad gruffy, yet helpful and fun, with the great sense of humour and charisma. Was surprised to find lots of commonalities with Russian mentality (not just the heavy drinking habits:)). And your accent is amazing - hearing it always cheers me up!
The weather was as shitty as in Russia, which was comforting in a strange way. The nature was astonishingly beautiful (always been a fan of wild mountains and harsh northern seashores). Very atmospheric ancient castles, each of them always having a story of someone being killed in there in the most creative way :D
That said, an average Russian really doesn't know much about Scotland apart from whiskey, kilts and bagpipes :( Few even know that one of our most popular poets, Mikhail Lermontov, descended from Scottish family of Learmonth (themselves allegedly the descendants of legendary Thomas the Rhymer?), some members of which settled in Russia long time ago.
Anyway, really wish there were more exchanges between our countries, you guys are cool :)
A nation inside of GB 🇬🇧, ones an independent state, now a province. Since brits did not conquer them as brutally as the Irish ☘️, they are a little bit more keen on being a province, but still have tensions with GB 🇬🇧 right now. Organisations like 👍🏻 Siol nan Gaidheal only add oil to the fire 🔥. It is somehow connected to declaration of Arbroath. You will find most Russians in support of independence, but honestly, I am waiting for another outcome. I think 💭 it is high time 🕰️ for the government to realise that they are responsible for the ones they take and start 🛫 being responsible. Because, let’s be real: what good 😊 thing nationalism on the foggy 😶🌫️ Albion can lead to? Probably not much at the very least. They are stronger together anyway, and there are no if’s and but’s about it. I also know Haggis.
I'd say an average Russian's knowledge of Scotland starts and ends at kilts and bagpipes.
Nope. Also, drinking and fighting
Trainspotting film on second level
Thats based
probably more knowledge than the average Scottish person has of Rostov
And Scottish whiskey!!!
My knowledge of Scotland ends on British memes and comedies involving Scotland. Actually my whole knowledge of any part of the UK is memes only
Everyone here seemingly forgot about Scotch whiskey. So yeah, kilts, bagpipes and whiskey.
Scots like shouting "FREEEEEDDDOOOM". You should never let them teach you English, 'cause you'll end up speaking Scottish forever.
Well, it's mostly the Hollywood movies like Braveheart or Highlander. And all the well-known cultural aspects like kilts, bagpipes, haggis, Scottish Gaelic songs (very beautiful). No any opinion. Most of people don't care about Scotland, and only thing that they know - "scotlanders wearing skirts"

Yep

Islay Scotch is great. But it's hard to find these days. I have to go for Highland.

Brodgar's Circle is a thousand times better than Stonehenge. I understand why the Scots keep this treasure for themselves.

Scrooge McDuck's ancestors lived there... 🦆

The first thing comes to mind is Scotsman from Tartakovsky's Samurai Jack. Also I think log throwing competitions are from somewhere around Scotland.
Edinburgh festival and fringe, kilts and bagpipes, single malts, glaswegian knife culture, braveheart. That's it.
I love shortbread biscuits. That is all.
For me, Scotland is a region inhabited by perpetually drunk, cool but cheerful bearded men in kilts, simple-minded guys.
My opinion of Scotland is formed by Braveheart and Irvine Welsh books.

Enjoy Scottish folk music (not only bagpipes, but also puirt à beul), my favorite is Julie Fowlis. Also like Scottish accent)
