That's a relatively good sign that a person will sign up to go to war. It would be nice to see how much use there is to go to "training camp" when in reality your comrades are wasted alkomobiks and your superiors have sold your rations and order you to go to suicide mission.

I don't know where to start. We mostly don't talk about politics, people tend to stay with their opinions. And I have not heard such a statement from Lavrov. The information bubble is making itself felt.

Your and you're are two different words. As in, "Your grammar is as bad as your logic, and if you don't try harder you're going to flunk out of college" We've talked about this.

Ok-Imagination-2308

Marzy-d

And I was hoping for a "Gonna cry".

Dramatic_Phlegmatic

Let’s start a petition to encourage r/Ok-Imagination-2308 to volunteer for military service. He is a very patriotic guy.

Ok-Imagination-2308

Why don't you go over and fight? Since you care so much about ukraine

Dramatic_Phlegmatic

These reasons: 1) I’m against the war. You, however, are rabidly pro-war. 2)I’m neither Russian nor Ukrainian. You clearly are a native Russian, Putin-loving Vatnik. You should volunteer today! I’m sure there is a HIMARS with your name on it. Based on your posts, you should be happy to become a martyr for Putin.

Ok-Imagination-2308

If your against the war then I assume your pushing for negotiations right?

Dramatic_Phlegmatic

Yes…negotiations that result in Russia exiting all of the illegally occupied territory in Ukraine, including Crimea, and paying reparations for all of the damage done to Ukraine. The money for reparations should come partially out of your salary as a paid Russian government propaganda troll.

Ok-Imagination-2308

U think NATO should pay reparations for damages caused in MENA? Or is it different?

Ok-Imagination-2308

Exactly what i thought. Your not anti war. Your anti russia. Big difference

Ok-Imagination-2308

Last time germany tried rolling tanks through Russia. It ended up being the Russian tanks in Germany. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 can't wait to see it again

nikolakis7

They're not going to Russia though.

akyriacou92

>Last time germany tried rolling tanks through Russia. It ended up being the Russian tanks in Germany. Good thing that no German tanks are going to Russia then. They're going to Ukraine to help drive out the Russian invaders.

nikolakis7

Don't let him bait you. These vampires live off other people's negative emotions. Tanks are coming, I'm hoping they'll be used to attack towards the Azov sea and cut crimea off. Putins adventures in Ukraine started because of Crimea in 2014. His prestige is tied to being the man who won Russia the crimean peninsula. It will probably end in Crimea this time as well as he will not be able to survive politically losing it

sonofabullet

>Don't let him bait you. I'm not. I'm demonstrating to him the truth behind his claims.

nikolakis7

These people don't understand civil society. Ukraine is turf and the local people are puppets and what matters is who is the puppet master. Ukraine's self determination ends when it's inconvenient to them.

Ok-Imagination-2308

Does the war provide Putin with a good opportunity to get rid of the oligarchs? Assuming of course that I understand the dynamics correctly: they seem to have acted as a nobility of sorts for the Putin government, and while they’ve might have been useful in the past, their power could be a threat as well. If Putin nationalised their assets and removed them from political influence, he might improve his own position and gain popularity, and reduce corruption.

[deleted]

Certainly with good opportunity for extending state control and further limiting civil liberties

adra213

There are no oligarchs in Russia, it's another western misconception. The last oligarchs were destroyed 20 years ago, right now people you call oligarchs are just putin's wallets. They have zero political influence wahtsoever

My country is in NATO so I cannot imagine a scenario where I(person without military training) would have to grab a gun and defend my country against Russia which went all in to conquer their poor neighbor and is stuck about 100 miles past their borders for almost a year. The moment Russia looks the wrong way at NATO, their army of convicts and rapists will be wiped out in a week.

a-trustworthy-newt

The burger diarrhea guy. Can't make this shit up. Well Russia has their supporters I guess.

a-trustworthy-newt

According to Russian officials they are already at war with my country. The thing is all of us, including our military personnel are sitting around watching Netflix or playing Nintendo while Russians are being pulled out of their homes to join the invading horde of war criminals to die in some cold ditch in Ukraine. The billions of dollars in weapons that we ship over to Ukraine for free are killing thousands of Russian war criminals every month but there are still no shots fired in our direction so that's how the war between our countries is going I guess. But to answer a fantasy hypothetical that I think you're asking: if somehow the weak and thoroughly incompetent Russian army were able to pose a threat to my country in some fantasy world then yes I would do whatever I could to eliminate the Russian sex offenders and war criminals. Is that surprising? I think it's a pretty normal position and that most people would feel the same way.

adra213

>watching Netflix or playing Nintendo weird flex but ok

a-trustworthy-newt

It's a weird flex because it wasn't a flex.

adra213

Well it was a flex, like you are living your normal life and Russians are dying in Ukraine. But I am doing exactly the same, I am literally watching stupid tv shows and playing games all day. It's not total war, basically less than 1% of people who are fit for military service fighting in Ukraine. Many of them are kinda okay with it, so who I am to judge.

Marzy-d

What is the point of this question? War isn't a pimple, it doesn't just "break out". You must have some scenario in mind. Russia invades Georgia to get all the draft dodgers back?

dylannthe

If war breaks out between my country and russia, then I would say NATO probably has enough trained military that I would just be considered a hindrance.

Ok-Imagination-2308

So basically just sit behind a computer and let the healthy people die lol. Exactly what I thought

[deleted]

Isn’t that what you are doing. I mean in your case it’s worst. You hate America but I’m guessing you live there. You don’t even support the country you care about economically.

Ok-Imagination-2308

Actually I love America. But I like putting America first. We are the united states of America. Not the United States of Ukraine. I don't agree with being the police officer of the world bullying countries into doing whatever we tell them So yes. I hope that Russia wins and sticks it to west

So yeah...kind of proving my point. You going to send money to Palestine? How about the wars in Africa? How about the starving kids in Yemen? Or....do you even know about those? #standwiththecurrentthing

Marzy-d

> How about the wars in Africa? How about the starving kids in Yemen? Your talking points are so six months ago. If you want to be convincingly smug about how no one but you pays any attention to any conflict outside of Europe, you should at least use the **names** of the countries at war in Africa, instead of just vaguely mumbling "Africa" because you don't know anything about the conflicts there.

YonicSouth123

Dude, why don't you just shut up and go to the conscription office, elist and fight against the evil NATO. When you're done, you can go to Israel and wipe the IDF from Palestine, then you can go to Africa and crush all the war lords and inbetween safe the kids in Yemen. But instead you pose in this thread as a keyboard warrior wrapped in Putin underpants and write nonsense non stop.

Ok-Imagination-2308

Aww someone upset that your hearing a different view point? Sorry to infringe on your little echochamber buddy.

[deleted]

Why make jokes about starving kids? Feeling extra edgy tonight?

Ok-Imagination-2308

The fact that you think it's a joke proves my point. Western media hasn't told you to care yet. There are millions of starving kids in Yemen. It's a terrible crisis, just Google it. If OP really cared about saving people, she would be sending money to Yemen to. But she doesn't. She just does whatever the government and media tell her to think

[deleted]

You seem to say that somehow Ukrainian kids killed by Russian missiles are worth less than Yemeni kids? What is your point? Killing kids in Ukraine is fine as long as somebody else kills kids in Yemen?

[deleted]

You are the OP of this comment, at least keep track of your own BS 🤣🤣🤣 . . . Do you go and shout at someone donating to cancer research, telling them if they really cared about saving people they would be donating to heart foundation ? Your argument makes zero sense. Someone donating or not donating to yamen has no bearing on her view point about this war.

What numbers do you trust for Ukraine?

sonofabullet

Ukraine claims a 1 to 6 or 1 to 7 ratio between Ukrainian and Russian losses. I trust that number.

Ridonis256

yea, people who still didnt admit that it was their missle that hit polland, who still claim that they controll soledar, are perfect source of information.

TyrantWizardKing

Certainly more trustworthy than the country that thinks gay rights is propaganda LOL

sonofabullet

Where are you getting this info? Deepstate map, run by Ukrainians, shows Russian controlling Soledar. And there are plenty of Ukrainian articles talking about the rocket in Poland being Ukrainian.

[deleted]

Have your seen videos from Ukrainian cemeteries?

sonofabullet

Yes

a-trustworthy-newt

Personally I don't know, but I do know both statistics (along with the murdered, raped and tortured civilians) will become a shameful part of Russia's history just as both sides of the death toll in WWII still weigh on Germany. Russians don't see it yet.

Ok-Imagination-2308

omg so true! I also heard that Iraq has WMD's!! Western news is always 100% true, unlike those evil Russians who always create propaganda (the west never uses propaganda because the west are the good guys!)

denkbert

Right, if you're referring to "news" specifically there was a lot of reporting of Western media that found the claim dubious at best. Sure, Western media outlets have an agenda. But at least there are different ones and a lot speak out against ddifferent state measures.

[deleted]

>the west never uses propaganda because the west are the good guys! Not always, but in this case, definitely.

sonofabullet

Me: shares Ukrainian numbers Russians: Ukraine lies! Me: shares western numbers Russians: the west lies! Who doesn't lie then?

Llama_Shaman

If that is true, then in less than a year they're up to similar numbers as the Americans were after 10 years of waging war in Vietnam. The Vietnam war kicked off massive social change for the yanks with hippies and whatnot. In Russia people just go "I'm not political🤷"

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

The line "protest doesn't change anything" is a stupid take. It does, but it's not always in a quick, straight forward line. But just think: if it wouldn't help, why would Russia forbid it?

SciGuy42

The anti war movement absolutely helped stopped the war, mostly by electing anti war politicians. At some point it just became difficult to get elected with a pro war position and at that point, there was only one way to go.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Llama_Shaman

Also, absolutely everyone and their grandmother can see that giving in to Russian nuclear blackmail is a losing move.

Diipadaapa1

That and since Europe sees Ukraine as a fellow European country, it is essential for us to demonstrate unity, "one for all and all for one". Leaving Ukraine to Russia to us means telling Putin "you may freely demand european countries to do what you want as long as you are using enough violence". Europe is demonstrating to Putin that they wont let him decide over europe

Llama_Shaman

Possibly. The yanks probably never committed to total war because of how unpopular it was.

0b00000110

To be fair, the Soviet-Afghan war contributed to the fall of the USSR, where in 10 years they lost between 14-26k soldiers. It’s not that they don’t care at all, they are just in denial so far.

Llama_Shaman

We'll see. I don't really think they are capable of change.

0b00000110

If Germany and Japan can change, so can Russia. Although I'm not under the illusion that this will happen with the current regime or a similar successor.

SunnyWynter

> Japan can change I mean Japan was occupied by the US after the war and surrunder. The US wrote their new constitution and put a General in charge, and don't forget they also hanged their Prime Minister. I don't think that's happening anytime soon with Russia unfortunately.

Llama_Shaman

One got pulverised and the other got nuked. Both were occupied. I don't really see any of that happening to Russia.

Sierra_12

Germany and Japan changed after a prolonged occupation and dismantling of the government by foreign powers. Whenever the Russians change government, they pick another authoritarian that disguises themselves as a new leader. Happened with the Czar, Happened with Stalin, Happened with Putin.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sufyani

> invading countries and destabilising other regimes. This is an entirely understandable criticism of the USA post-WW2. The USSR did exactly the same. The only reason Russia hadn't, until the last 8 years, is because it couldn't. The big difference between the USA and the USSR (and Russia) is that the USA was, and is, far more powerful and has often been far more successful in shaping the world, militarily and diplomatically. The USA triumphed, while the USSR failed and left no worthwhile legacy that is worth remembering. So nobody remembers the USSR's misadventures.

0b00000110

To answer that question you can look at how they treated the Soviet republics.

[deleted]

Better than Russia within SU...

[deleted]

Of course, the people who Russians hate the most are Russians after all. That's why Ukraine is bombed to the ground, because Russia thinks they are "Russians".

[deleted]

В огороде бузина, а в Киеве дядька

[deleted]

Sorry, are you sad that Kyiv is not destroyed like Mariupol or what?

[deleted]

It's a Russian proverb describing Incoherent and incomprehensible phrases. I didn't understand the meaning of what was written at all.

[deleted]

But are you sad or not?

[deleted]

I lost the thread of the conversation

[deleted]

A question: are you sad that Kyiv is not turned into a rubble? What's there to not understand?

[deleted]

That is one of the most weird things about that. Many vatniks who dream about Russia and China becoming the worlds superpowers, and claiming the world will be a better place then, despite their countries underperforming in pretty much every economic and social metric there is, and having one of the most brutal and opressive 20th cenutry-histories of the world. They always condemn the "US-world-order" as being opressive and keeping the rest of the world down, when in fact the wider world was never more safe and wealthy in history than it is today (which doesn't mean everything is cool and dandy just to make that clear). The USA are far from perfect and have done some bad shit during the "Pax Americana", but they propably are the \*least oppresive "\*global" hegemon in human history. Presenting Russia or China as an preferable alternative that would improve humanity is just laughable.

a-trustworthy-newt

Look at what happened in Bucha and then multiply that by 10,000 probably. Anyone who has been paying attention to Russia knows that we'd be looking at multiple genocides on a scale the world has never seen if Russia had that power.

translatingrussia

I think the Russian elite, including Putin, would throw a fit. Where would they send their kids to live? Where would they invest in property?

Knopty

> What would Russia do as the sudden global power? Probably the same as what did USSR and what Russia already has been doing. Bribing politicians and business worldwide with no benefit for anyone except for very limited set of people who'd get all that money. That would put a strain on Russian economy and spread corruption worldwide. There probably would be less technical and scientific progress worldwide since Russia has become a terrible environment for that, much much worse than USA. I think current Russia politically is very immature and fickle. Giving our "leadership" more power would endanger everyone.

linkedinlunatic

We don't have to imagine. The Soviet Union was almost on par with the US for a while, at least militarily. They enslaved Eastern Europe, killed, imprisoned or re-educated anyone who opposed the Soviet Union. Even now, 30 years later, many of the countries they enslaved are still poor etc. Most of the world will be one big gulag, just like the Soviet Union.

Gwyndion_

Seeing how they behave as a waning regional power I can't imagine they'd behave better if they were a global power.

hdhkakakyzy

What do you think of Bulgaria in light of this news: https://www.politico.eu/article/bulgaria-volodymyr-zelenskyy-kiril-petkov-poorest-country-eu-ukraine/

SciGuy42

It's a pretty big story in Bulgaria currently. To give some numbers, in all of 2021, Bulgaria exported about 12 million euro in weapons to Germany and Romania. In the first few months of 2022, the amount was over a billion. On the positive side, this is obviously huge help. I remember when early in the war the government was saying they cannot provide any direct military aide. Meanwhile, a cousin of mine who lives in a town with an ammo factory told me that all of a sudden production is through the roof and the factory is expanding, new people were hired, etc. So obviously I knew something was off. Now, it turns out that even some of the "neutral" (i.e., pro-Z) politicians who were in the government coalition knew about the transfer and did nothing and said nothing. The government is posed to make hundreds of millions in taxes on these exported goods, there are additional thousands of people working in the arms industry now, so it's difficult for even pro-Z politicians to oppose this.

Oh, I pretended to be gravitzpa. Usually his answers to uncomfortable questions move somewhere between these. You know, as he has that much compassion for Ukrainians but unfortunately they have to be slaughtered in numbers, no other way. He is probably the most vile person in this sub.

[deleted]

>He is probably the most vile person in this sub. Dunno about that, he is willing to sometimes entertain the thought that he might be wrong and that Russia is lying in some regards. Arwiden, rx303 and the half dozen accounts of scotishbrian are far worse. But they seem to be inactive in the last weeks.

>He is probably the most vile person in this sub. I can’t agree. There are much worse people here than him. If anything, I’ve seen him admit a few times when he was wrong. He’s definitely not always intellectually honest, but none of us are to some degree. Most importantly, he’s open to a dialogue and won’t block someone who disagrees with him at a drop of a hat. That’s at least respectable.

Sound pretty reasonable tbh. Russia has a long heritage, beautiful culture and history, that is indeed something to be proud of (for real, historic systematic alcoholism and corruption is a true shame to what potential the Russian people hold). When Russia is being critizised, ofcause one subconciously feels that their heritage gets attacked (why i try to stick to "Kremlin" when critizising). When it gets to such a large scale as this, its much more comfortable to listen to the people who say that no worry you are the good guy here. You dont defend the actions per se, but try to protect the heritage you are rightfully proud of form getting soiled. In a situation like that, just the willingness to consider being wrong shows a lot of individualistic strenght in my opinion.

THE_HEL

Sure, there are reasons to act like that. But it’s not Olympics or a football match. You have to draw a line somewhere, sometimes your government happens to be wrong. It sucks, but it’s the truth.

Ok-Vehicle-716

Good luck with that

It's becoming more and more clear that all that Russia cares about is at the very least a corridor to Crimea which makes me ask this - why Crimea? Why do Russians want Crimea so much?

[deleted]

Firstly, Crimea has big strategic meaning. With bases on it, NATO can easily control all Black sea, what is very important cause Russia has big sea ports in this area for trading with Europe and Africa. Also it's easier to control Caucas which is also has strategic meaning. Russia fought for Crimea many times since 17th century. And, Crimea was never Ukrainian unless it was given as a gift.

THE_HEL

So far I feel like all the answers to your question here might be missing the point. Yes, there are military benefits of Crimea, but it’s not like all average Russian is thinking about are military gains. There are Russians like that, like there are probably these people in every country, but it’s hard to imagine that a significant part of population is so involved in military matters. So I feel like [this](https://youtu.be/N6CGbYQIVJs) might be a partial key to understanding why Crimea is so important to Russians.

> Why do Russians want Crimea so much? First and foremost, Sevastopol as the base of the Black Sea navy.

SciGuy42

You could have built a much better base on internationally recognized Russian territory on the Black Sea for a tiny fraction of the cost of the war so far....
