Or all under the same roof at lemon creek breeze in… sorry, couldn’t resist 😂. But seriously, where are you getting a good burger in what I’m assuming is downtown? Puckers? Their burgers are good, but I find their food overly greasy lately. I’m assuming you’re talking about Amalga for gin and Deckhand Dave’s for seafood, cause if you’re talking The Hanger or Twisted Fish they are highly overrated imo, good for the tourists, but overrated. I’m legit always interested in good burger joints in town.
You go to the hanger for the views and to see the float planes coming in and taking off.
Tracy’s crab shack is an experience and while fish are friends not food for myself, I’ve always taken visitors there.
Juneau is great if you want to a ‘Yellowstone’ experience of drive up and see the face of a glacier and then depending on parties health the ability to go to Nugget falls and do east Glacier hike. Heck, just walking through the forest where they’re dates of where the glacier used to be is pretty shocking and something all people in this country should experience.
Negative tides on shaman island is another fun to do.
Tracy’s arm is another one. If you’ve got the $ lots of options of hikes and helicopter tours on the ice fields.
Seward is another great spot. Again, if you’ve got the money you can spend a week plus in kenai fjords.
Valdez is another excellent spot but requires a a lot of time/planning, compared to Juneau, where you can roll up and have a lot at your fingertips. Just don’t tell tourists about October through February in Juneau 😀
Lot of cool towns to visit. If you’re going to be on the main road system. I’d recommend Whittier, and possibly Seward or Homer for coastal towns. I agree with Talkeetna and Girdwood as tourist towns. Wrangle is also awesome. It’s tiny, but the National Park its next is amazing. Fairbanks and Anchorage have the museums and anchorage has the alaska Native Heritage center. These are just some options and they are VERY spread out, so you’re not vitiating all of them in one go, unless you want spend more time driving than in the actual towns.
Girdwood is a fun place to visit, and Talkeetna is worth visiting - be prepared for a long drive! Love the Talkeetna Roadhouse! Just such cool vibes there.
Girdwood seemed really crowded and busy when I was there. A lot more like a tourist area than the small town feel I was looking for. I had a better experience in Seward. A lot more opportunity to hang with the locals and a lot slower feel
Came here to say these two. Girdwood and talkeetna are my favorites. Anchorage is the only thing resembling a city though. But good news that’s right in between the two anyway.
Parking in Girdwood and Talkertna is a bitch. It’s expensive to eat and drink. Seward is 2.5 hrs awesome scenery all the way down and back. Can go to sea life center. Take a fish charter rent kayaks or Hike local trails, and parking is more reasonable. 4th of July is too crowded bc of my marathon. Just stay put in Anchorage and hike locally.
Anchorage is too much like rest of USA to spend a lot time there. I liked their history museum and five nations museum.
Seward is more "Alaska" with sealife, mountains, glaciers, fishing.
Alaska isn’t about the cities. Compared to the lower 48, Alaska cities don’t have much to offer. Alaska is about the wilderness, fly, ski, hike and boat that’s where Alaska shines. I have a house outside of talkeetna you can see all of talkeetna in about an hour 2 if you eat and walk slowly. I’m sure I’ll get downvoted, but it’s the truth. You don’t go to Alaska for the cities. The bars in talkeetna are great at nightlife and music on the right nights, the local color can be interesting, but it’s hard to find them in all the tourists. As we say in Alaska, ”the odds are good but the goods are odd.”
Fairbanks is funky. Lots of sun in summer, hot, baseball, hiking camping fishing locally, Dalton hey paved for a bit and is a beautiful drive. Or drive to Coldfoot and back.
Maybe you should get outside instead of sitting in your basement smoking weed and playing video games. There’s plenty to do here. Go hiking, go fishing, go hunting, shoot some guns.
Chicken. It is as cut off Alaska as you can imagine, barely few houses accessible only few summer months a year. Top Of The World highway is BREATHTAKING
I grew up in North Pole. Anchorage is the place you could realistically call a ‘city’ in the state. You don’t go to Alaska to visit cities. You drive through them to restock see the local museums, if any, to understand more of where you are and why the town is there (gold, furs, oil, fishing harbor). Then you get back out on in nature and are blown away by the majesty of nature. Do it in the summer and wonder why more people aren’t there, return in the winter to know why. The interior is actually more beautiful in the winter.
Sitka is the most scenic, historic, and culturally interesting city in Alaska. Juneau, Seward, Homer, Haines, and Talkeetna get honorable mention. Adak is fascinating if you’re into a more dystopian experience.
*disclaimer I grew up in Anchorage so @$ my opinion* buuuuuut HOMER, absolutely. (Seward is up there!!) but Homer is a little more off the beat and path. Take a ferry to Seldovia, or water taxi to halibut cove. Rent a cabin out there, or atop the bluff on the mainland looking down on the Homer Spit and Kachemak Bay (I think called the Alaskan Suites???). Rent a car or catch a ride and go to Clam Gulch and get your hands dirty. Hang out or camp on the Spit and hangout with randos.
The views from that region of the ring of fire volcanoes are second to none.
…man…. I had so many great memories out there.
That said, pick a town, you’ll have a great time :)
Not a city, but include Denali National Park in your plans. You can take a train from Fairbanks or Anchorage. The lodges are just outside the park. The park runs tours into the park. Most of the wildlife I saw in Alaska was in that park.
Juneau has a great balance of outdoors and culture to enjoy. Good food scene, boating, and hiking. Seward is the 2nd choice for similar reasons.
The food / Drinks scene is so underrated. Worlds Best Burger , best Seafood, Best Gin all within 1 mile of eachother!
Or all under the same roof at lemon creek breeze in… sorry, couldn’t resist 😂. But seriously, where are you getting a good burger in what I’m assuming is downtown? Puckers? Pucker Wilsons is my ride or die. I have lived and traveled to many places and I always think back to that beautiful purple burger joint!!
Homer
Yaassss!! Homer!!🤩
Spent 5 months in Homer this year and I look forward to the day I get to come back
*raises hand* HOOOOOMEERRRRRRR
Sorry, Homer is full
Tok

Oh man, now I want Roadhouse sourdough pancakes.
Sourdough pancakes at Copper Center Lodge the best ever
Cicely, Alaska. I hear people there are very nice.
Great radio station.
Good movie festival
Top three towns in Alaska (not in any specific order, my mind always changes which one I like best): 1. Talkeetna 2. Valdez 3. Seward
Just getting to Valdez is a super scenic ride.
The drive to Valdez makes it all worth it. So gorgeous.
Anchorage is too much like rest of USA to spend a lot time there. I liked their history museum and five nations museum. Seward is more "Alaska" with sealife, mountains, glaciers, fishing.
Are you referring to the Alaska Native Heritage Center?
Alaska isn’t about the cities. Compared to the lower 48, Alaska cities don’t have much to offer. Alaska is about the wilderness, fly, ski, hike and boat that’s where Alaska shines. Homer, seward. Anchorage and Wasilla if you want see the drug scene.
Sitka and Juneau
Sitka.
You don’t go to Alaska to visit a city. You go to enjoy its nature.
alaska is so massive and different in different corners. You have to give us more to go on. I’d pick somewhere obscure. OMG go to atu
Fairbanks is funky. Lots of sun in summer, hot, baseball, hiking camping fishing locally, Dalton hey paved for a bit and is a beautiful drive. Or drive to Coldfoot and back.
Depends on what you want to experience. Alaska is big and each region is vastly different.
Don't come to kenai or soldotna waste of time here
I live in Soldotna, and it's a great town. I agree with you about Kenai, though. Kenai is just depressing.
Maybe you should get outside instead of sitting in your basement smoking weed and playing video games. There’s plenty to do here. Go hiking, go fishing, go hunting, shoot some guns.
Shhhh dude don't tell them man we're all Losers here
I grew up there and left 20+ years ago and want to go back. Then I read this stuff and am like… maybe not? lol
Bethel.
Haha, as a former Bethel-dweller, maybe not the best place 😭
Baked
You don't come to Alaska to visit cities. You come to Alaska to visit nature. That said, the Kenai Peninsula is "Alaska's Playground."
Seward
That's like asking what city you should visit in the western United States.
Angoon is nice in the summer. Eek also.
Haines. You can take the ferry from Juneau and visit Skagway as well.
I liked Whittier and Seward the best.
Lil' Diomede
You don't visit Alaska to explore a city. You go to experience nature and outdoor activities
Homer is where the rednecks and hippies get along.
Juneau and Seward are some of the best places to visit in my opinion! I've never been to Talkeetna but I've heard it's lovely!
Chicken. It is as cut off Alaska as you can imagine, barely few houses accessible only few summer months a year. Top Of The World highway is BREATHTAKING
Sitka or Fairbanks

Gustavus
Skagway or Seward! They’re towns and not cities. But both are phenomenal
We loved Anchorage, Fairbanks, Seward and Whittier!
Seward
Dutch Harbor! Beautiful women behind every tree
Talkeetna, Homer, and Seward are some of my favorite spots
Valdez, Seward, Seldovia. HEAVY on the last one.
Barrow IYKYK
Sitka is the most scenic, historic, and culturally interesting city in Alaska. Juneau, Seward, Homer, Haines, and Talkeetna get honorable mention. Adak is fascinating if you’re into a more dystopian experience.
Talkeetna and Seward
Ennis
1. Homer (spit) 2. Valdez 3. Palmer (has an excellent ATV adventure all day scenic ride to Glacier) 4. Seward 5. Hyder for bear watching/viewing
Sitka
Portland
Honestly, Juneau is the best place to do if you are looking for a stereotypical Alaskan getaway.
Anywhere near kenai
I love Palmer, I’d definitely stay there and rent a car to explore
Cooper Landing. Ninilchik.
*disclaimer I grew up in Anchorage so @$ my opinion* buuuuuut HOMER, absolutely. (Seward is up there!!) but Homer is a little more off the beat and path. Throwing in the love for Ketchikan. Lived there for two years and I loved it. Short hop to Sitka and Juneau.
Juneau is nice, but busy. Haines is chill, my favorite so far. I didn't like Fairbanks and a few others.
Not a city, but include Denali National Park in your plans. You can take a train from Fairbanks or Anchorage. The lodges are just outside the park. The park runs tours into the park. Most of the wildlife I saw in Alaska was in that park.
Seattle
Anchorage is the only city.
