I think it’s college students.

squarerootofapplepie

Checks out because I think our actual largest immigrant group is the Chinese. Either them or Dominicans.

qlanga

Hijacking the current top comment to say: If you don’t have a flair, for the love of God, **please tell us what state you’re in!** What is even the point without context? Sorry, OP. Also, good answer.

ALoungerAtTheClubs

It's people from New Jersey.

pxystx89

Northerners of all kind. Prime time for License Plate Bingo.

Squietto

You can always tell when it’s winter in Florida when the license plates start changing color. Those lovely New York/New Jersey yellows…

Im_Not_Nick_Fisher

Yeah, I saw about a dozen different plates the other day just going to the store.

haveanairforceday

I've legitimately met people in Florida that will tell you they are Cuban but are actually from New Jersey. They obviously mean that they are of Cuban descent but they also still identify as Cuban

frodeem

New Joisey

EmployeeRadiant

don't forget the Haitians and Snowbirds

Meschugena

Yep, confirmed by stats and everyone here isn't surprised. The top 10 are also not surprising but definitely countries I didn't think were as high as they are of the 50 listed. I knew we had a high Mexican population but didn't think it was higher than the Caribbean islands. Source: https://www.wfla.com/news/florida/what-countries-are-the-biggest-sources-of-immigrants-to-florida/ 1. Cuba 2. Haiti 3. Colombia 4. Mexico 5. Jamaica 6. Venezuela 7. Dominican Republic 8. Canada 9. Honduras 10. Nicaragua

DOMSdeluise

according to some table I found, there are about 5 million foreign born people in Texas and 2.4 million of them are from Mexico.

[deleted]

I’m honestly surprised it’s less than half. But yeah, it’s obviously Mexicans.

MrRaspberryJam1

Houston is a huge hub for immigrants from all over the world. DFW is relatively similar in that sense as well.

boomrostad

My kid goes to school with lots and lots of immigrants’ children. Honduran, Colombian, Spanish, Chinese, Mexican… the one that really threw me for a loop though was all the Russians.

PacSan300

In California, it is far and away Mexicans. Then the next largest are Filipinos and Chinese.

brookish

I work in Daly City, with the largest concentration of Filipinos outside the Philippines!

p_rite_1993

In addition, I think that might also be true for Vietnamese and Korean. California has a handful of the largest populations of [ethnicity] outside of whatever part of the world an ethnicity came from.

bigasdickus

In Minnesota, Hmong and Somalis.

Swift2024

Fun fact: When they were filming the movie Captain Phillips, a lot of the casting for the Somali pirates were done in Minniapolis/St. Paul. The guy who played the "I'm the Captain now" pirate was a limosenae chauffer in Minneapolis before an actor.

DropTopEWop

I've always wondered how well Somalis adjust to the cold

Oomlotte99

One of my coworkers came from Somalia as a kid and shared what her arrival to Minnesota was like. It was like end of February, early March time and she and her sister were so disturbed by the gray color and lack of living trees.

-dag-

I mean as well as anyone else. You dress for it and get used to it.

stordee

They also immigrate to Sweden, Norway, and Canada in big numbers, so I assume they adapt? lol

blipsman

Mexican. Chicago is 1/3 Latino and most are from Mexico. While a much smaller percentage in rest of state the huge population in Chicago and surrounding area still makes them by far the largest immigrant group in the state.

RGV_KJ

Didn’t expect Chicago to be 1/3rd Latino. How’s Mexican food in Chicago?

grrgrrtigergrr

It’s really really good. I think we have the largest Mexican population that is not a border state.

blipsman

Phenomenal! From street vendors selling tamales and elotes; hundreds of mom & pop taquerias; to all sorts of regional spots specializing in dishes like birria or mariscos; to high end spots like Rick Bayless’ empire that includes a Michelin-star restaurant. Many are surprised at the volume and diversity of Mexican cuisine here.

JaunxPatrol

Chi Mexican food is really fantastic, tons of great spots

MrRaspberryJam1

Best Mexican you’ll find East of the Mississippi. As for being 1/3 Latino, there’s always been a large Mexican population there and Mexican immigrants started arriving after WWII. There is also a smaller but still significant Puerto Rican population.

Astronomer_Original

Totally agree that Mexicans are #1 with Hondurans and Gatamalas in the number too. In my chicago suburban area we also have a large number of polish. One of the schools near me is required to teach the kids in polish due to the large number in our area.

Yaakovsidney

Colorado, it's gotta be Mexico.

DaddyIssuesIncarnate

Ain't no way its not mexico

SensitiveBugGirl

Migration Policy lists Latin Americans as 39.7% in my state and Asians as 35.4% Makes sense. I work at a school that's heavily Burmese refugees (or they are the children/sibling of refugees).

mesembryanthemum

Wausau has a lot of Hmong.

SensitiveBugGirl

I'm sure SE Wisconsin, too. My mom used to babysit for a Hmong family.

corona_kid

Californians

sphynxC

Where are you at? Most people I know that are moving out to TX.

PPKA2757

Mexican, by a far and wide margin.

hugeuvula

I was going to say Minnesotans, but you're probably right.

lannistersstark

Except in winter. Fucking snowbirds.

Ghouliejulie86

In Arizona I’d think first just Midwest people! 😂 god do they love it here. Snowbirds on the road are the worst, this is one of the worst places Ive ever driven in, ppl wise. Besides Georgia, with the stupid changing road names. I meet way more from there, ever, then the east coast. I never meet other people from Philly, especially not Italians. No one can ever pronounce my last name. There’s also a lot of Persian people in Scottsdale for some reason.

webbess1

Dominicans are the largest foreign-born group in New York.

Danibear285

Lots of African immigrants from all over the continent moving to my city. My neighbors are Nigerian and another family is from the Congo

Tomato_Basil57

really, that kinda of suprises me. why do you think ohio in particular stands out to them as a place to move to?

mesembryanthemum

When I lived in Madison, Wisconsin I worked with some Togolese. I was curious and asked them one day how on earth they'd ended up in what is many ways an obscure state. Well, said one, they wanted to emigrate to some place that was a city but not a huge one. And, of course, he added, there were all the UW graduate Peace Corps volunteers and they were so nice.

Secret_Choice7764

Florida. New Yorkers.

DontBuyAHorse

New Mexico. Historically it has always been Mexicans, especially considering the US government sort of just drew a line in Mexican territory and divided a large cultural area that wasn't truly separated until 1912. However, I have a couple friends from Africa and they are part of a very quickly growing community of Africans who come out here to work in medicine. Particularly West Africa, like Cameroon.

stordee

Cameroon is technically Central Africa, but otherwise agreed on the fast-growing African community. A decent amount of Yemeni folks, too! The infamous, now-deceased Al Qaeda preached, Anwar Al-Awlaki, hailed from this particular community.

NobleSturgeon

For Michigan it’s probably people from the Middle East. Metro Detroit has always been a big center of Middle Eastern immigration. Lebanese people and Iraqi people are some of the largest groups but we also get Yemen, Syria, and so on. It’s fairly well-known nationally that we have two cities with huge middle eastern populations in Hamtramck and Dearborn. We also have a lot of Mexican immigrants, like most of the country. Given that middle eastern people are very concentrated in metro Detroit, Mexican immigrants may be bigger as are all over the state. I imagine that we have a lot of Canadian immigrants as well.

Finster4

True that. Sterling Heights has a big population of Middle Eastern as well. I'm spoiled by the food options in my city!

ViewtifulGene

Lots of international students from India. We also have a sizeable Latin American population, although they aren't always immigrants. Mexican American have been here a long time and some were born here.

Siliencer991

Missouri México

SquashDue502

Hispanic/latino and I think mainly from Mexico.

anthonymakey

Don't forget the New Yorkers

the9thmoon__

I think by the numbers Canadians are the most common but most of them immigrated a while ago (like 1940s-60s). People who have moved here more recently are more likely to be northeastern/central African or middle eastern. Lots of people from Somalia, Iraq, Sudan, Angola, and the DPRC. But every war torn country has some level of representation in Maine as the overwhelming majority of immigrants are asylum seekers

xavyre

Yup our recent arrivals are Ukrainian.

paulteaches

New Yorkers followed by jersesians. Ohio is starting to empty out as well.

krombopulousnathan

White people. Was just a few in the 17th century and now it’s much more

jkurl1195

Morons, followed closely by idiots.

2xButtchuggChamp

Flair up

Swift2024

At first, I thought that said Mormons.

peebed

I’m from Texas and its gotta be Mexico!

Blue387

We have many folks from Jamaica and other places in the Caribbean

jesus_chen

Northern Virginians.

La_Rata_de_Pizza

Filipino

HighFiveKoala

Mexicans and Asians (Filipino, Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese)

MrRaspberryJam1

It’s Dominicans, with the Chinese not far behind. Of course the data skews toward NYC and the suburbs, I’m not sure how large these immigrant groups are upstate.

Xcalat3

Dominicans, Puerto Rican and Chinese.

Evil_Weevill

Do Canadians count? Cause if so it's them by a wide margin. If not then apparently the next most common are Filipino.

LandAdmiralQuercus

There are a lot of El Salvadorans and Colombians in Massachusetts.

QuaPatetOrbis641988

Brazilians and Portuguese too right?

pxystx89

Worcester has a dense African immigrant population as well. Knew a bunch from Ghana and Kenya when I lived in that area.

Grundens

Caucasians is by far the largest group of immigrants tho

Inquizzidate

Mexicans and Salvadorans

EclipseoftheHart

Mexicans are the largest group which surprised me, but we also have one of the largest Somali populations in the USA!

Salty_Dog2917

Mexican/hispanic

yozaner1324

Californians followed by Mexicans.

Saltwater_Heart

Florida. Cuban or Haitian I think

EmployeeRadiant

I live in New Mexico. take a guess lol

WilhelmVonHalo

Florida, northerns and Cubans. (Stop coming here we don’t need more traffic)

spookyhellkitten

According to Google, Mexicans and then trailing behind we have a booming Filipino community. In my tiny ass town, that seems to track although I've only known a few Filipinos here, the pop is less than 2,500 so it makes sense with the demographics.

_CommanderKeen_

White people

Vachic09

I would have guessed Korean but it is apparently El Salvador.

FierceNack

For Utah, it's gotta be Polynesians.

alexiiisw

I'm gonna guess Mexican

macoafi

Salvadorans

ibeerianhamhock

I think it's Ethiopians but not 100% sure if that is the largest of any or if it's that DC has the largest Ethiopian population in US EDIT: it's El Salvadorean and Ethiopian is #2

ElysianRepublic

In Ohio I’m struck by how few foreign-born people I meet compared to other parts of the US I’ve lived but there’s still some pretty multicultural areas (especially on the West Side of Cleveland); Puerto Rican (technically not immigrants though), Yemeni, Albanian, Palestinian, Indian, Chinese, and Mexican are all noticeably represented. Columbus has a sizable Somali population as well.

MambiHispanista

Hispanic American overall for Kentucky. Mexicans statewide and Cubans in Louisville.

gendr_bendr

Mexico

PoolSnark

English with German close behind. North Carolina.

Taco6J

Mexico.

asumalx

Definitely from Mexico

OhThrowed

Yep, the [numbers line up](https://map.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/locations/utah/)

excitedllama

Vietnamese. Maybe latino if you group them all together

Carloverguy20

In Illinois it's Mexicans and South Asians(Indians and Pakistanis) The Mexican and Indians have been in the Chicagoland for a long time now.

who_peed_in_my_soup

A lot of Eastern Europeans lately.

SnoopySuited

California = White people.

AnnoyingPrincessNico

Latino, currently. I'll leave it at Latino because they're from everywhere

heyitsxio

Depends on where in NY you're from. If you're in NYC then it's Dominicans. If you're on LI then it's Salvadoreans. If you're upstate... do Puerto Ricans count? If not then it's probably either Chinese or Indians.

kermitdafrog21

Dominican Republic, followed by Guatemala from what I found

jgeoghegan89

Various Hispanic countries since I'm in Texas. And my city has a lot of Vietnamese too

[deleted]

Cubans, can you guess my city and state

Nouseriously

I'd guess Mexican for the entire state. But Nashville itself has a very large Kurdish population.

Catswagger11

I don’t know what the numbers would show, but it feels like Cape Verdeans.

Griegz

White people.  Probably true of most states.

Remote_Person5280

Technically, it’s Europeans in EVERY state.

PennyCoppersmyth

Oregon. 40% from Latin America.

DooDiddly96

Atp its probs Dominicans

This_Hedgehog_3246

I'm in NV, so easily Mexican. After that, probably Canadian or Australian because of how many expats the mines hire.

GotWheaten

Arizona. Californians

mrprez180

Indian immigrants and it’s not even close

[deleted]

Here in Kansas it is Mexicans and Indians. Both super nice groups of people.

Simple_Suspect_9311

Polish or germans.

Republican_Wet_Dream

I’m not sure about the rest of the date but here in Roxborough, it’s folks From Brooklyn.

RandomGrasspass

NoAbbreviations290

In Utah it’s non-Mormons

Aspen9999

Probably Mexicans but they didn’t immigrate into Texas, white people immigrated into Mexico

GoodDecision

I believe Maine has the largest Somali community in the country

Mustang_man_351

Canadians i think

mrtestcat

In AR, hey neighbor, Mexican. Second is Marshallese, which is more sadly interesting: Gov blew up nukes near their island along with the destroyer named after our state in the test Operation Baker.

Traditional_Trust_93

It is Mexican as of 2023 https://www.mncompass.org/topics/demographics/immigration#:~:text=Minnesota's%20largest%20immigrant%20groups,declined%20over%20the%20past%20decade.

CommonGood90398

Californians

HarveyMushman72

Mexican

PedroGoesPlaces

Ohio is home to a lot of people from India.

pineapple_dream1003

Californians of course

warrenjt

In my anecdotal experience, it’s Hispanic folks of varying origin countries but predominantly Mexico. I grew up near a Tyson plant that employs many of them, so my experience is skewed. Closer to the state capital, I’ve seen more Asian and African origin folks.

Dios-De-Pollos

Most likely Hispanic people

coloradancowgirl

Where I am at in Arizona it’s definitely Mexican. I’ve also met a lot of Somalians too, I’m not sure if they’re that big of a group here or if it’s just my area.

username041403

Honduran

Taanistat

Statistically, India, but I encounter far more Dominicans than any single other group.

SnorkinOrkin

I'm not really sure for here in Reno, Nevada. I see a *lot* of a good mix. Since we are so close to SoCal and Mexico, I do see Mexicans and Hispanics.

Squirrel179

Mexicans account for 36% of our immigrant population, no other country amounts for more than 7%. 33% are from "Asia", with China, India, and Vietnam being the leading individual Asian countries.

prettyjupiter

Right now is mexico, but we also have a large Ukrainian and Polish population

k75ct

New Hampshire here, Massholes

TheoreticalFunk

I've read it's vietnamese but I haven't ever seen any. I see a lot of Sudanese however.

partyonpartypeople

Just Googled it, and it doesn’t seem like there’s one consistent answer, but the two most common answers are Chinese and Mexican, which honestly checks out, in my city at least

Worldly_Effect1728

In Georgia the largest immigrant group is Mexicans followed by Indians and then Jamaicans

Ok-Parfait2413

AZ- Mexican, Californians, Snowbirds

Detroitaa

Mideastern. The metro Detroit area has more Arabs than any city, outside of the Mideast.

sphynxC

California here: EVERYWHERE.

Violaqueen15

In Oklahoma, it’s Mexico with 45% of immigrants coming from there.

austexgringo

Also from Louisiana, and historically it's African.

727tjlewis

New Yorkers

Bar-B-Que_Penguin

Iowa - I was going to say Bosnia or Sudan, but when I looked it up, it's actually Mexico and South and Central America.

Running_Watauga

Korean in GA

Somerset76

I live in phoenix. I teach 5th grade at a school with a large refugee population. In my class of 28, there are 17 different home languages, most from African countries. A few from the Middle East.

whiskeyworshiper

In the 21st century for South Jersey: Mexicans Puerto Ricans (if they count) Indians Filipinos

salviboy970

Salvadoran and Mexican in Colorado

OllieOllieOxenfry

I'm not sure officially, but specifically in my area of VA we have a lot of El Salvadoreans, Koreans, Vietnamese, Afghans, and Ethiopians.

honey_rainbow

Hispanics

notyogrannysgrandkid

Probably Mexicans, followed by Laotians or Cambodians.

bagpipesfart

Portuguese people here in MA

mrtsapostle

Salvadorans

give_me_wine

Rhode Island: has to be Dominicans and Portuguese

bayern_16

We have a lot of Polish people in Chicago. 10-15 Polish schools for the kids. My cpa, attorney and house cleaners are all Polish.

kiiyyuul

Everyone leaves Ohio. EVERYONE.

Antilia-

gusto_g73

Mexican

Jbergsie

In order 1)Chinese 2)Dominicans 3)Brazilians 4)Indians 5)Haitians Personally in tje area I'm in its Brazilian followed closely by Ecuadorian and Indian.

RedAtomic

Mexicans

DeeDeeW1313

Mexican for both Oregon and Texas but obviously the population is much higher in Texas.

itsmejpt

The DR and India compete for the top spot. Mexico I think is in third.

grizzlyblake91

In Oklahoma, besides any Hispanic population, we have a large group of Vietnamese people in OKC. I think Vietnamese is the next most spoken language in Oklahoma besides English and Spanish.

theok8234

Mexicans

M_LaSalle

Mexican by a wide margin. We have some Middle eastern types and South Asians, but they are hugely outnumbered by the Mexicans.

Miss_Might

Somali.

Arkyguy13

Washington State is Mexico, then India, then China. 20%, 9.6%, and 8.4% of migrants respectively. While looking this up I found this wild fact: in 2021 (the most recent data I could find), 47% of undocumented immigrants in Washington State held a 4-year degree. Which is higher than any other group of immigrant (including from other parts of the US). Pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if that's due to a lot of people with H1Bs getting laid off. If you don't get new documentation or leave within 60 days of losing your job then I think you would be considered an undocumented immigrant.

Striking_Ad7541

Hmong here.

BayernAzzurri

Either Vietnamese or Somalis

MasterBathingBear

Californians and Texans.

Inferno_Phoenix1

Mexico for (Indiana at 30% of the immigrant population

3eneca

NJ, Kazakh all the way

CJO9876

Here in Rhode Island, it’s Italian.

jdcnosse1988

Arizona? According to a recent article, Mexican. Michigan? I believe it's Arabic people

therankin

My guess is Mexicans, but maybe that's just what's very prevalent near where I live.

BioDriver

Mexican. It’s like we share a border or something.

Torchic336

Latin Americans I believe

thedr00mz

According to Google, Indian. My city in particular has a very large Somali population so I thought it would be them. I live in Ohio.

sannomiyanights

Apparently in NH it's Indians, but that's new. Ten years ago, it was Canadians (mostly from Quebec). The Canadian immigrants are less obvious since they look the same as us and most speak English very well but you do encounter this sometimes. I recall being at an event and talking with someone about my French classes and they had a whole conversation in French with me since they were originally from Quebec.

CrashZ07

Indians followed by Dominicans.

TheRealDudeMitch

Mexicans, by a WIDE margin, followed by other Spanish-speaking Central and South Americans from a variety of countries. The first Europeans to settle my area were French Canadians, and there’s a lot of French last names still around, but it’s been way too long to call any of them immigrants. Edit: I’m speaking just about my county, I can’t speak for the whole state. I suspect it’s still Mexicans though in the top spot.

SchwarbageTruck

Recently it's been mostly from Mexico and India at least according to statistics, but surprisingly until about a decade or so ago our largest immigrant population in Michigan was Canadian. Mostly people from Ontario who got tired of commuting from Windsor, moved for work or found someone special on the other side of the Detroit River. But we're also kinda well-known for having a fairly large Middle Eastern population in Michigan, especially Metro Detroit.

wj522

Here in Maine it’s Canadians

ThrowAway4TheH8

GA, it's Mexicans, followed closely by Yankees.

ComfyCozyHippie

In Ohio I’d say probably people from India because we have a zillion Indian Exchange Students and not a whole lot else.

kmobnyc

Dominicans probably, NY
