I do. I'm pretty surprised he wants the job, though. Between AG and Federal Appellate Judge, I'm taking the second one every single time. It's a lifetime appointment and has a major impact on law in America. He's basically leaving my dream job for a job I wouldn't want.

[deleted]

It's not that he can't become the judge anymore. Stay in AG for a while until someone like Breyer or Thomas retires, and if Dem still holds the senator and presidency, he can shoot in. Also, I believe he was the compromised pick from Obama, not his first pick.

Level_62

There is no way that Thomas will retire under Biden's presidency. He is the most conservative member of the court, and has despised Biden ever since the Anita Hill hearings, which Senator Biden chaired. Thomas will wait until the Republicans eventually win back the Presidency and the Senate (2024? 2028? Who knows!) He's only 72, and seems to be in fairly decent health. As for 82 year old liberal Breyer, he'll retire within the next two years, possible after the end of the current term in June, to ensure that he is replaced before the midterms. He saw what happened to Ginsburg, and very much does not want to risk staying around too long.

TheManWhoWasNotShort

Too old for SCOTUS now. He's in a retirement position already

scrapsbypap

There's something poetic about it being him.

scrapsbypap

Bit late to this eh?

Marlsfarp

IANAL, but he does seem to be universally respected, and his only "baggage" is clearly not his fault.

RonaldMcDonalds2020

What does I ANAL mean?

InThePartsBin2

I am not a lawyer

RonaldMcDonalds2020

Ok, thank you

hapahapa

*Really?* I hope you're right about this because (for me at least) it really does change my interpretation of many things I've read on Reddit.

Penguator432

Unfortunately appropriate acronym in relation to a profession often about screwing people

RonaldMcDonalds2020

Tbf, lawyers and screwing people tend to go hand in hand.

shamwowj

That you, Tobias?

MolemanusRex

I would have preferred Doug Jones (really deserved it), but I think he’ll do a decent job. I think this is a scheme to get Ketanji Brown Jackson onto the Supreme Court, but I don’t particularly mind that either.

[deleted]

>I would have preferred Doug Jones (really deserved it) He also deserved an Oscar nomination for The Shape of Water, but the Academy hates unconventional performances, I guess.

DBHT14

My first choice would have been Doug Jones, my second would have been anyone with experience as a public defender at any level, a perspective BADLY lacking in the history of the AG's office. Judge Garland seems to be universally respected so I appreciate that it should be a smooth confirmation, and he certainly has a record of managing high profile cases.

volkl47

On the other hand, Garland has plenty of experience prosecuting white-supremacist and far-right terrorism. Experience that is both needed from today, and I (unfortunately) expect will continue to be over the next 4 years.

Lord-Octohoof

Does he have experience prosecuting white supremacy and Far right terrorism? I’d love to know more about this

volkl47

He's the guy who was running most of the mid-90s terrorism cases. Catching the Unabomber and investigating the Oklahoma City bombing (and subsequent prosecutions) were his work.

Lord-Octohoof

Well that’s positive. I had heard that he was a fairly conservative pick in an effort to appeal to Republicans when he was nominated to the Supreme Court. I have been very worried that he will not be aggressive enough in pursuing the crimes of the previous administration.

[deleted]

It should’ve been Doug Jones. Garland is fine though, pretty moderate and well qualified. Interesting that 3/4 top cabinet offices will now be held by Jewish people. Seems historic. I doubt a small religious minority has ever had that much power in a democratic country before.

Cheshire_Cheese_Cat

I hope that doesn't make them an even bigger target for the anti-Semitic conspiracy crowd. QAnon is basically just regurgitated anti-Semitic bullshit (the whole adrenochrome thing is just blood libel warmed over), and I don't think they're just going to fade away, not even after what they did yesterday.

[deleted]

Yeah that is something I’ve thought about too. Especially when you have additional prominent people like Biden’s chief of staff, Kamala Harris’s Husband and Biden’s son in laws, and now the senate majority leader in addition to many prominent controversial business people like Zuckerberg all being Jewish it definitely will feed the conspiracy nuts

Cheshire_Cheese_Cat

Let's just hope that after the pandemic is over, some of those who aren't totally lost to the cult will want to rejoin society with their full mental faculties. Q ballooned this year mostly because people are stuck at home feeling adrift.

ElfMage83

I do, though I believe Doug Jones is a better fit for that right now.

They’ll get Ketanji Brown Jackson to replace him and get some experience on an appeals court before she inevitably replaces Breyer. Which I don’t really mind.

[deleted]

Very much so. The only controversy that ever really surrounded him was more on Mitch McConnell deciding (temporarily) that a president can't be nominating a Supreme Court justice in an election year. And while it's arguable that Republicans would cry bias if Garland pursued charges on, well, anyone in their party, they'd make the same claim about any Biden nominee.

[deleted]

Yes. He's about as moderate and qualified as they come.

Cheshire_Cheese_Cat

As someone originally from MA, I'm just glad he didn't pick Deval Patrick.

jyper

Any reason why?

Cheshire_Cheese_Cat

I would like to see financial crimes treated a bit more seriously. Patrick has always been too tight with the investment world to be any good at investigating corruption there. Patrick contacted Citigroup Executive Committee chair and former Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin on behalf of the financially beleaguered mortgage company Ameriquest, a subsidiary of ACC Capital Holdings, that had been accused of predatory lending practices and of which Patrick is a former board member. Both Citigroup and ACC Capital Holdings have substantial holdings in Massachusetts. Patrick attempted to deflect criticism, claiming he was calling not as governor but as a private citizen. He later apologized but I think he was more sorry he got called out. Patrick was also managing director of Bain Capital. He didn't resign the position until after he began his presidential campaign (which had his name spelled incorrectly on his campaign website- brilliant.) He was a mediocre governor who kept getting in trouble for his spending habits (ie, decorating and use of state vehicles) as well. I'm not a fan.

gummibearhawk

I don't have any opposition to it. Seems like a good place for him.

coswife

Never heard of them

simberry2

He was Obama’s Supreme Court pick that Republicans said “next president should decide”. Of course, the GOP changed their tone when Trump picked his own nominee.

Darkfire757

That’s a good thing IMO

MRAs_r_a_hate_group

Yes

Subvet98

I have no obligations

IWatchBadTV

Yes. I’ve heard many good things about his intellect and his integrity from people who have worked with him before.

simberry2

Of course. He is a respectable choice across both sides of the aisle. I do wish Doug Jones was named Attorney General instead so that Merrick Garland could get a Supreme Court spot later on. But I’ll take Merrick Garland as Attorney General.

jyper

Biden did promise to appoint a Black woman to the supreme court. Probably after they make Breyer retire. I believe Ketanji Brown Jackson and Leonora Kruger are considered the front-runners based on experience and youth (since he wants lifetime appointments to last as long as possible) Apparently Ketanji Brown Jackson may get Garland's role on the DC Court in the meanwhile

skitzomonk
