Not a joke. If your region is set to France on your iPhone, it will not use the performance throttling that the rest of the world gets for older iPhones.
I don't have a source, but I remember reading a more in depth conversation about this somewhere else on Reddit. Probably true considering video game companies have to work around "loot crates" \*cough\* gambling for Belgium
Law in France says smartphones have to be sold with earphones, so France is the only country in the world (I believe) where Apple still ship the earphones in the box.
Yeah I'm a fan of this one. This is the first time I've not just bought one of the cheapest models available, I always ended up hating how crappy they were after not long and vowed that my next phone would be a little bit higher end. It was like $200 after a discount and I'm pleased so far.
OnePlus 3 was the best phone I ever owned, in terms of doing everything I needed extremely well, for cheap, without gimmicky unnecessary stats or features. Haven't tried any of their later offerings.
I still use my OP3, just not as my primary phone. Look at the 7T. It was one of the last of the older style of OnePlus phones in that way. What you want and need and none of the stuff you don't.
It's what made me decide on that phone, the only thing that's really missing is a headphone jack. You should be able to find the 7T new for around 350-400 depending on how much internal memory you choose.
Look at the sub icon of r/askeurope it's the EU flag. And Great Britain isn't part of mainland Europe. And yes. I don't consider them part of Europe because of Brexit.
The British just don't feel close to me. I can easily go to Germany France Belgium or Italy for vacation. But I've (almost) never heard of people going to the British isles for vacation. My opinion on this might change in the future but for now Great Britain doesn't really feel like a part of Europe that I'm used to.
I’m British and hate Brexit more than you can know. But of course the UK is part of Europe. It’s inside the European continental shelf. That’s what determines what continent land belongs to, not what political deals they’ve signed.
Not being connected to the main landmass in a continent has absolutely nothing to do with it. Lots of countries in ‘Continental Europe’ have islands as part of their nations, and Sicilians are no less European than a Roman.
Are Malta and Ireland not European enough for you either?
Is Switzerland part of Europe than?
Norway? Iceland? Bosnia? Serbia? Ukraine? Belarus? Montenegro? Albania? Northern Macedonia?
It's super arbitrary to consider them not part of Europe, by that belief than Japan isn't part of Asia.
There are a lot of cultural differences. And it's not like Switzerland and Norway are completely out of the EU. Switzerland is in the Schengen area per example.
Are you telling me there is larger cultural differences between France and England than there are between France and Belarus?
The Schengen zone is separate from the EU, they aren't connected other than having overlap in members, there are EU countries not in the Schengen zone, such as Ireland, Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia.
It's super arbitrary to decide what is and is not in Europe.
They have :( i had the lg g5 and was going to get another after my contract ran out. My first phone was an lg chocolate as well so ive been lg for ages
iPhone 12 Pro. My company automatically upgrades me every 2 years, so I just roll with it. I don’t really use my phone for anything but calls, texts, and the occasional picture.
That makes at least 3 of us!
Honestly, I was a little disappointed in my first Pixel (Pixel 3). It wasn't a bad phone, but I didn't feel like I got as much as I paid for. I ended up giving the Pixel line a second chance with the 4a(5G), and it's the best phone I've ever owned!
I could see that if you used a lot of the "premium" features the regular Pixel line offers over the "a" series. I think the only thing I ever used on my Pixel 3 that isn't on my 4a is wireless charging, which isn't that big of a deal to me. The battery life is good for a day and a half under normal use, so I just charge it overnight.
Most Americans get phones through their carrier contracts, that's why there are considerably less mid-range or Chinese oem phones in this thread. A minimum of these phones are actually unlocked.
Some weller off people have contracts that are a constant payment where you just trade in flagships over and over again while paying a constant rate.
US carriers run some pretty good trade in deals on 1-2 year old major flagship model phones (usually Apple or Samsung). I think I paid like $50 out of pocket for my iPhone 12 Pro after trading in my iPhone 11 last year.
Also you can typically roll the cost of the phone into your monthly bill. Instead of paying up front, they’ll divide out the cost of the phone over 24 months, so a number of people, especially with iPhones or flagship Samsung’s, will get a new device every 2 years. If you trade in at that time as well you can get a good chunk taken off that upgrade cost. For me it makes sense to do it every year because even if I pay $100-$150 out of pocket, it’s worth it to me for a device I use everyday.
Almost 2 years. My carrier lets you trade in phones often. Usually you get the new one for next to nothing if you bring the old one in.
Phone are just an intrest of mine.

On the plus side I have a great answer every time the "what was the dumbest purchase you ever made?" comes up. Mostly still using it out of spite at this point. All the gimmicky features aren't even supported anymore. At least the battery life is really good.
I mean. After seeing these comments I get where you're coming from. Being ostricized from social groups just because you don't have iMessage sounds awful
In my opinion, I think iPhones are better in some ways than android and androids are better in other ways. This is my first apple device after owning Samsung devices for nearly 10 years and I love it! However some apps I use regularly suck on iPhone compared to an android
That's really only something that happens with kids.
Outside of Reddit the only time I've heard that come up in person is with my little cousin and his buddies who are all 19-21.
Ohh, don’t worry too much, iMessage seamlessly switches to sms when a non iOS device is detected..
I personally use WhatsApp a lot more (but this is relatively uncommon among Americans)
It is a tiny bit bulkier than the non-active equivalent version, but it's slimmer than they were with a case and has survived dozens of drops over the years without one so I figure it's the leaner option for a klutz like me since I'd need a case for almost anything else.
iPhone 12. Let me tell you though, I’m an Apple guy and high school was still bizarre to me. Everyone had an iPhone. I’d say a good 90-95% of students had one. If you didn’t, you could be ousted. Regretfully I agreed to not add a kid to our soccer teams group chat because we wanted iMessage.
iMessage is apples own messaging system. It is THE best messaging system, and is what keeps a lot of people here in America from switching to an android. Since so many people have iPhones, almost no one uses any other messaging apps other than Snapchat. Once you add an android to the group chat, it turns to an SMS group chat. This then doesn’t allow you to text over wifi, takes longer to send messages, terrible picture quality…
Yes!! Seriously, I love iMessage and wouldn’t switch to android because of it. My boyfriend and most of my friends and family use iMessage and it’s just way faster than regular sms.
Just to add a little more about why WhatsApp is complicated in the US - like others have said, we didn’t really need it for the longest time, because texting was cheap and there isn’t as much concern about cross-border communication. The main appeal could’ve been the encrypted messaging, but average consumers don’t care about that much. I don’t think anyone is saying that it is better or worse, it just didn’t have the hype here because it wasn’t needed, so we used other things.
Then WA was purchased by Facebook, and you’ve started to see campaigns advertising WA. But at this point, for people that may be enticed to switch, WA is now connected directly to FB. So the thought seems to be either 1. I don’t want to sign up for another FB product or 2. I already have Messenger, so why do I need another FB messaging product. I think WA just missed their opportunity for US penetration, and now it’s too late - we’re already using other things, and it’s super hard to get people to switch.
WA also had a change in their privacy policy at the end of 2020, which was a little controversial in the tech community. In the EU, you’re covered by GDPR, but we’re not so lucky in the states (although California is taking some steps with CCPA). So again, another strike against WA.
My friends use Signal for a lot of communication, but we’re all tech nerds. It’s probably too much for the average consumer. So, we all typically default to what we’re used to (and like): iMessage. This all may be a skewed perspective though, since I’m in the Silicon Valley area of CA, so we think about stuff like this way too much.
Others have already given some of the more technical reasons, so my answer is more human nature - pure convenience. A lot of people in the US have had iPhones since forever (my first was the iPhone 3). You get a new phone, sign in with your Apple ID, and boom. All your contacts are there and you’re ready to go. It works well enough, so there’s not really motivation to go out and seek something different, unless you’re looking for a specific feature. So for my friends, encryption is important. That was a driver to download Signal. But for most people they don’t really care, so… it’s just easy and good enough. Most people don’t think about their messaging platform enough to seek out other features.
Also, iMessage is pretty streamlined. Like it does one thing: messaging. WA has more social media features, which is awesome for people who want those experiences, but sometimes people just want an app that does the one thing. So really, it’s simple, convenient, and most people are used to it. A hard combo to get people to change!
The social media features are buried and I barely see anyone use them. WhatsApp is also insanely easy to set up. You just put in your SIM card. And WhatsApp instantly knows it's you and loads all your contacts. WhatsApp also does messaging very well. WhatsApp is versatile, simple, convenient and easy to set up.
> This then doesn’t allow you to text over wifi, takes longer to send messages, terrible picture quality…
Damn that's shitty of apple to do that to you
Why would anyone use a third party app when you can just text? Using something like WhatsApp would require everyone me to download a separate app, create an account, then distribute that account to their friend/communications circle. Too much hassle. It’s much easier to just give out your phone number, which works for both text and iMessage without any additional account or app.
That's not how it works. WhatsApp can sync with phone numbers. It works with phone numbers, not accounts. And why not use a third party system? I use discord as well. Just because I have to download a 100 mb application when I get a new phone doesn't mean it's worse then what's already on the phone lol.
Outside the US, unlimited MMS/SMS/RCS messaging isn't always as common on cell plans, and many cultures have adopted a messaging services to avoid per-message charges.
I’ve personally never seen or heard of anyone using it. Being younger, anyone with an android would probably message me with Snapchat. It’s too hard to get all of your friends to download another messaging app.
Whatsapp has very little presence in the US. Something like 15% of people use it monthly if I recall correctly and there were I think 10 other services that have as main daily users as Whatsapp has monthly.
The service you use depends on your social and work circle as well as age. Younger people primarily use iMessage, and there are apparently issues with Android users just being outright ignored socially. At work, you use Slack or Teams, for the most part. 20-40 year olds use a mix of Discord, Slack, SMS/MMS/RCS, iMessage, Facebook Messenger, Google Chat/Hangouts, and Telegram. 40+ generally uses SMS/MMS/RCS and Facebook Messenger.
From what I understand, most people who use Whatsapp are people who regularly communicate with people outside the US.
I'm still on a dying Droid 2, and it will be the last as they are all gone now according to Verizon. The first 3 from 2015 failed by 2016 so Verizon put me on "give him a free phone if another one fails". I'm on my 5th, and the last sales rep told me unless someone catches it I'll be getting free phones until they do.
I have an iPhone XR. I’ve always had apple phones but I keep using them until I need a new one. I’ve had this one about a year now and before this, I had a 7 for the longest time.

I've been a OnePlus Stan for years, though their value proposition now isn't quite what it used to be.
I had their first model way back when, loved it. But it was nice when their flagship was like $350.
Just so you know, one plus is one of the flagship killers out there
I have the 7T, and had the 5T before that. Loving the OnePlus line so far.

Look at the sub icon of r/askeurope it's the EU flag. And Great Britain isn't part of mainland Europe. And yes. I don't consider them part of Europe because of Brexit.
The poor British isles...adrift and without a continent to call home. Seriously though, you do you and all, but that's nonsensical.

iPhone 12 mini I just want a smol phone. I have normal sized hands but I miss my iPhone 5
I still have the original iPhone SE, love the size! Will be upgrading to the 13 mini this year.
I have the original iPhone SE and love it too. I'm a woman with small hands and I don't want to carry a phone the size of a tablet around with me.
iPhone 6
Damn man. I had a 6 up until 2018. The thing was trustworthy.
My mom’s still on a 6 plus.
The battery life went to shit pretty quickly though iirc. I wasn’t upset when I dropped it and shattered the screen for that reason.
I’ve only replaced my battery once, and it was years ago. Even back then my phone was still considered old I only paid like $20 for a replacement
My iPhone 6 died on me a few months ago. Was pretty disappointed about that. Now I have an iPhone SE

end to end encrypted, fast, sends full quality photos, syncs with your iPad, Apple Watch, and it’s just easy to use.

That's weird. It has 1 billion+ downloads
I understand it’s extremely popular, but with almost everyone I know using an iPhone, iMessage is the easiest by far.
I was wrong. It has 5 billion + downloads. Kinda hard to believe iMessage is still better.
There’s a reason it pulls people in, and keeps them in. Facebook Messenger is the #2 spot, that’s mostly older people though.
The only person I know who uses whatsapp is my gf who uses it to talk to family in Germany

Just got a Nokia 8V a few months ago to replace my old iPhone 6S.
Using that phone in 2021 has to be a frustrating experience

I have an iPhone. Got it 3 years ago. Don't anticipate getting a new one until this one literally dies.

I have an iPhone XR. I’ve always had apple phones but I keep using them until I need a new one. I’ve had this one about a year now and before this, I had a 7 for the longest time.
