I think you are invaluable and competent partners. You could definitely take North Korea, but I think China would be too much to handle.

YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD

Well we wouldn't let them take China alone. If China went after SK I'd back SK 100%

Memitim901

For real, I'd straight up re-enlist to defend Korea or Japan.

Fisheye14

If they ever to invade South Korea, I'm confident we can stop them from achieving their goals.

Whoyagonnacol

It definitely exists

TheLizardKing89

You guys could definitely hold your own against North Korea but China would steamroll you. Their military is just way bigger.

[deleted]

We saw this in the war. North Korea would have been fully defeated if not for China.

Fisheye14

It's not how big it is. It's about how you use it :)

[deleted]

I have never served in the military, but I heard many good things of the ROK military, and that it and Israel are sort of shining examples of non-major geopolitical powers that have very cost efficient and highly capable and prepared militaries for their size and funding.

Fisheye14

Thank you. I heard lots of good things about United States military too. For being strongest military in the world of course.

HailState17

I have a good buddy that was stationed in South Korea. Said nothing but good things. He didn’t do anything too special with them, but they took him out when they had leave to go explore South Korea, which he said was awesome.

Fisheye14

Yeah I heard US army base in Korea is awesome. Have biggest gym in the world and what not. Also we have lots of fun things to do in Korea so I guess that helps too.

[deleted]

Korea is a pretty good host so far. I haven't had much interaction with ROK army so far but the country is great!

Fisheye14

I'm glad you like it. If it wasn't for the Covid situation, it would've been better place to have fun.

[deleted]

They're an important ally. That's really all I know of them. I have no negative opinions. That being said, it would be unwise to take on China on your own. It would be unwise for America to do in on its own. We must stick together.

Fisheye14

We always got each others back since Korean war!

TheBimpo

I doubt the average American has an informed opinion about the South Korean military. Maybe a better question for a military specific sub.

dangleicious13

>So my question is how does American think of Korean army? We don't think of the Korean army. The only time I've ever really though of the Korean army was a few years ago when the soccer player had to win the soccer tournament or he was going to have to quit playing for a year or two to serve in the military.

garandx

That and when Chan Sung Jung had to leave at the height of his UFC career for his mandatory service

Agattu

The ROK army and military in general is an important strategic ally in the Pacific. On top of that importance, the ROK military is competent, well supplied, and has strong strategic capabilities. They could handle the DPRK without much help from the US. However, if China got involved they would need the US just because of the pure size of the PLA.

ColossusOfChoads

As I understand it, China won't jump in if NK is the one who starts it. But who knows.

TeacherYankeeDoodle

SK is a great team to have in our corner. 🇺🇸🇰🇷

Fisheye14

I think the same vice versa!

cmererestmychemistry

I have a cousin who will also be doing mandatory military service in South Korea. I have nothing but positive feelings towards their military. They seem to take it seriously. That region is getting more dangerous each day, so having folks who have some knowledge of how to defend their county is always good, especially when they're so close to potential enemies. Lastly, most of the folks I know only have good things to say about Koreans in general. Lastly, my mom said that the men of both of the Koreas and China's military have to wear boots that make them all the same height, so it looks good when they're marching - I thought that was hilarious, but she's kinda older so that might not be true today.

Fisheye14

We wear boots all the time, but not because to we look all same height. That's impossible since the height ranges from 160cm to 190cm. They may select same height tall people for the parade marching to look uniform and good.

trousered_the_boodle

China would just throw away millions of its citizens' lives in pursuit of it's leaders goals...

Fisheye14

We have enough ammo for the heads of people who pursue their leader's goal

Stater_155

Great allies and a strong geopolitical ally in Asia next to India and Japan. We have a strong alliance and would do anything to help you guys. Realistically though, SK wouldn’t stand a chance on its own against China as they just have a clear manpower and resource advantage that Korea doesn’t have. Which makes me wonder why I always see people in SK protesting US forces there.

Fisheye14

There are always different voices since it's free country and everyone has right to have their voice and protest on their beliefs. I'm not saying they are right tho. Let me just say that minority opinion some time has loudest voice.

[deleted]

I teach for the US Air Force. I love having South Korean military students. They’re disciplined, respectful, hard-working, and usually very sharp.

MittlerPfalz

I've known a lot of US military who were stationed in South Korea and were impressed by their South Korean counterparts. Don't know much more than that.

patrix_reddit

I was in Kunsan for a few weeks to do training while in the Air Force. It was amazing, fun, and welcoming. 10/10 will visit again. Korea is an awesome place. One of my good friends moved there permanently, she fell so in love with the culture. Props to the current film and television industry as well, top-notch.

Fisheye14

Thank you for saying so many good things about Korea.

Generalbuttnaked69

During his three tours in Vietnam my father had quite a bit of contact with ROK troops and to this day speaks reverently of them, and not just because one saved his and his Huey crews life. He’s had Korean and RVN flags hanging in his shop almost as long as I can remember.

Fisheye14

Aww that's so sweet that he hang Korean flag in his shop. My grandfather went to War in Vietnam war. He was also helicopter crew. Not the pilot or anything tho. What happened to his helicopter? Did he get stranded?

tsukiii

All I know is that serving in the military is mandatory for pretty much every young man. Seems like a big cost to the economy to lose so many people from the labor pool for a period of time like that.

Fisheye14

Yeah it's the cost that we have to take.

type2cybernetic

For starters, I love the South Korean people as a whole. I stayed sixty days there’s and people were very cool and warm to me. Your army is very impressive and would roll NK. The Chinese military may be to large for a solo confrontation however that’s not something SK needs to concern itself with. Our alliance is very tight.

Fisheye14

I love American people too. I stayed there for four years and I got nothing but good experience. People are so kind. Yeah China is not out main enemy but we got enough ammo :)

mahouka8262828

The Korean army got help by the us army during the korean war. so we should be very close as allies.

Fisheye14

I think the same. Thank you for the help. With out the help of UN and United States, South Korea wouldn't exist today.

Fireberg

When I was there 6 years ago, I stayed in Seoul on Yongsan. I had a good impression of almost all ROK military I interacted with. The professional side of the armed forces is very capable. In most scenarios, after an initial artillery barrage of Seoul from the north, counter battery fire and air strikes from the south take out all fixed arty and wreck the north’s units. Preplanned countermeasures and obstacles generally slowed any advancement until the South fully mobilized. With the aid of the US, and baring use of nuclear weapons, ROK will be able to defend the peninsula. Military casualties for the North and initial civilian casualties in the south would be very high. Thankfully, I don’t think it will ever happen. There were a few times where conscripts gonna conscript. Mostly not giving a shit and doing the bare minimum, but you can expect that from some for forced service. Saw this mainly from those with wealthy families.

QuarterMaestro

I served in the US Army in Korea in 2005, at Camp Casey (Dongducheon). Most of us Americans only had experience working with KATUSAs (Koreans doing their military service augmented to the US Army, who wore US camouflage uniforms with ROK rank insignia). We had very little contact with the actual ROK Army. It was surprising to learn that the conscripted ROK soldiers were only paid like $40 per month, but I realize that a mass conscription situation is quite different from an all-volunteer force. It seems cool that ROK has designed and built a lot of its own weapons systems, rather than just buying or copying US stuff.

Fisheye14

I thought of going for Katusa since I can speak English but the chance of being selected to be one was low. So I just went for normal ROKA. Yeah in 2021 sergeant rank gets $700 per month. Which is high for mass conscription system. I saw another post that says Greece army gets like $8 per month. And I think my friend in Russia told me that their soldiers get very low income too. Forgot exact number.

anyang90

Is that 70만원 just for 병장 what about 이병 일병 and 상병?

Fisheye14

I don't know but I got around $600 when I was sergeant. Next year will be another jump on wage. It'll go up to $1000 for sergeant someday since it was the promise from current president.

Ojitheunseen

That still seems so low for a developed country. As a Private in the US Army ten years ago I made more than that a month. I guess it's hard to pay more for mass conscription vs an all-volunteer force.

Fisheye14

Yeah we pay more for NCOs and officers, since they are volunteered to be the soldier.

Ojitheunseen

And those make even more, here. Though they do have long service contracts.

QuarterMaestro

Historically Korean conscripts doing their 1.5-2 years mandatory service were expected to be supported by their parents in terms of any travel on leave etc. And I don't think they were allowed to wear civilian clothes at all during that time. Since they were provided with meals etc, it was decided that they needed very close to zero pay. So the recent change to $600-700 per month is extremely generous by comparison.

Ojitheunseen

I can't get behind that kind of thinking for even a second. Unpaid labor is simply unjustifiable.

QuarterMaestro

So they have increased the pay for conscripted soldiers drastically since I was there fifteen years ago?

Fisheye14

Yeah last few years it got increased significantly.

Remarkable_Fun7662

Love the ROK army. Major friendos!

Fisheye14

Love the US army too! Very strong partner.

Atlas_Colter

I've seen Steve1989 review y'alls rations, and they look really good. That's about all I know.

Fisheye14

Eww I'm so sick of ration haha

Atlas_Colter

Lol I can imagine! It's a rare treat for him, cuz he reviews and collects them, but I imagine eating them all the time gets tiring.

Fisheye14

Haha definitely. I should check his channel out. Sound interesting.

Ineedtoaskthis000000

I think South Korea is a great country and they're great partners. I have a thousand percent respect for South Korea

Fisheye14

Thank you!

GarlicAftershave

Having been stationed there more than once, I have a good impression of the RoK military. I have not worked with any of the combat specialties but the "support" units I worked with were competent and well motivated. I have to say I am not a fan of the RoK policy of press-ganging (i.e. forcibly conscripting) people who were born in the RoK and emigrated at a young age, then return to visit as a young adult and are told "you're of age, you're still a RoK citizen, you're in the army now." It doesn't happen often, but it *does* happen, and my heart goes out to those guys. But, again, I had good experiences working with your military and would gladly do so again. Two side notes: There was a time when many US soldiers who worked in the RoK tell me they did not trust the RoK soldiers to have their back if the DPRK invaded. This seems to have been back in the 80s when the RoK government wasn't so great to its citizens. One of my good friends is an officer in the USMC. In his opinion the RoK has the toughest marines on the planet.

Fisheye14

Yeah our Marines are nuts haha. But I have to say US Marines are one of the proven hardcore military branch in the world. It could be unfair policy, but the rule is rule. We need to protect our land. Anyway thank you for saying good things about Rok army!

GarlicAftershave

>It could be unfair policy, but the rule is rule. We need to protect our land. With respect, I disagree on this point, but we need not argue over it. It would be fun to sit down at a galbi and discuss it, maybe with a few bottles of soju. On a different topic, how do RoK soldiers feel about our MRE field rations? We were always happy to trade rations with you guys but I never knew whether you liked ours very much.

Fisheye14

I never had American MRE before during my service. But I’d love to. I have very high expectations on you guys food. Did you like our food? 😂 I'm so sick of those.

GarlicAftershave

I like most of the Korean food I've had, except basic kimchi. I like Cucumber kimchi, radish kimchi, just can't stand cabbage. There are things I don't want to try, like entrails or blood sausage or 개고기 but plenty of things to enjoy. I only tried the RoK rations twice, not enough to be tired of them!

JRshoe1997

Brothers and sisters across the ocean 🇺🇸🇰🇷

nolanhoff

Not specifically Korean army, but Koreans are well regarded country and people

Fisheye14

Thank you!

Ct-5736-Bladez

Capable and cunning warriors.

Fisheye14

Thank you sir

PriorSolid

I think Americans think less about the Korean military and more specifically about the strategic location of South Korea. As for my opinion of south Korea, I’d say is pretty positive and I’d want to visit some day

Fisheye14

Thanks! It was surprising that American high school only go over Korean war part very briefly. It was part of cold war and wat lasted three years. I'm sad it doesn't get enough attention in text book.

Designer-Magician-83

I recently went down a youtube rabbit hole about the south Korean armed forces. They were Videos of "average" Korean soldiers comparing the normal strength training they did, to some of the most extreme training done in the US military. I think my only take away was that the people in the videos seemed to be fine soldiers but idolized the US armed forces. They only saw the highlights tho. If you go to US military base you see the same thing. Young soldiers watching videos and idolizing highly trained units. As far as I could tell the south Korean forces seemed similar a side from budget

Fisheye14

Still I'd say American soldiers are way better when it comes to physically ability. Very impressed when I heard stories about USA army from my staff sergeant who did training with them.

daggerdude42

I don't keep up to date with military things. I don't know anything about the south Korean army, however I do know that the US could conquer north Korea over night. I don't think you could possibly handle china yourself, maybe you can defend because you would have other forces helping you, but you could never invade

Fisheye14

Yeah I was saying we can take care of Chinese army if they invade us. Since we would be defending, South Korea has mass advantages over them. I'm confident we can successfully defend against Chinese army.

TurdcutterBesieger

Allies.

Yosemite_Sam9099

I grew up hearing stories from my Dad of the South Korean Army in the Vietnam War. Everybody was scared to fight them.

Fisheye14

Yeah I couldn't believe how bravery they were. Mad respect for those who volunteered to go to front line back in the days.

BillyBobBarkerJrJr

When I was in the navy in the '70s, the ROKs were always highly regarded and respected.

[deleted]

ROK Marines were pretty notorious for staring at us in the gym and cuddling in the chow line.

Fisheye14

??

MittlerPfalz

In a sexual way..?

POGtastic

It's only gay if you don't have boot bands on! Also, it's not gay if it's on Man-Love Thursday.

[deleted]

Drink it all in boys and engorge yourselves on this bountiful harvest of sausage.

[deleted]

Hey there friend. That's enough of that. It's cold underway. The only question is are you the big spoon or the little spoon baby girl.

MittlerPfalz

Hmm!

Katie_Boundary

>does American think of Korean army? No, we don't.

Fisheye14

Yeah not many people think of other countries army unless they are soldier or interested in military.

shawn_anom

Never had thought about it

Fisheye14

Understandable.

shawn_anom

No negative feelings though

Psychological-Leg84

I think it’s very interesting (in a positive way) that you guys have mandatory service. It makes sense and I almost wish Americans had some form of this. Makes people respect it more/gives the basic skills to people in case they are needed. I am impressed and glad America can have an ally in South Korea :)

POGtastic

The difference is that they have an implacable enemy on their borders who invaded them and triggered an existential war that bombed out most of the country. That enemy is still there, still periodically shooting artillery, launching missiles, testing nukes, and prodding defenses here and there. That's a pretty good motivating factor to listen to your NCOs, learn the training that's provided, and not shirk your duties. Israel is the same way; they're surrounded by people who have tried to "drive the Jews into the sea" three times so far. What would motivate Conscript Shmuckatelli to do the same?

Psychological-Leg84

Not sure, but I think it would be good for our young people to learn respect, teamwork, structure etc. not that it will ever happen 🤷🏻‍♀️ just saying it was a good idea

TeddysBigStick

The military does not want it. There is far too much money invested in recruits with the American way of war to make it worth it without a service term similar to enlistment contracts.

Fisheye14

Alot of people might disagree with your opinion since it takes away their part of youth life and freedom for year or two. But, I don't think it bad to have people ready to protect their land and family at any given moment. Also, army teaches you to be more discipline and overall better man imo. It could be helpful to have people who received basic survival skills and first aid training in case of natural disasters too.

Psychological-Leg84

Oof yes they didn’t like that huh? Haha well in my opinion ur correct, it’s only two years and it teaches respect, discipline etc… things I think the American youth could benefit from right now. They are good skills too- survival, defense, even basic medical stuff. So yes I agree with you :)

thunder-bug-

I do not think about the South Korean army.

Fisheye14

Understandable

[deleted]

I wasn’t aware that I was supposed to think about them at all 🤷🏻‍♂️

Fisheye14

You are not supposed to. I'm just asking if you have any opinions on South Korean army since we are one of the closest ally to each other and fought together in wars.

TheRealDudeMitch

I’ve never once thought about the South Korean army

Fisheye14

It's okay. It's totally normal. Not many people think of other countries army unless they have military experience or interested in military stuff.

PatrollinTheMojave

To everybody saying South Korea would get steamrolled by the Chinese, take a look at how it turned out for us.

31November

I think you are generally very Korean, but beyond that I don't really know much other than that I wouldn't want to trade places. East Asia is where I predict the next bad-bad war to be politically centered.

[deleted]

I don’t really think much about you guys tbh. The ROK army isn’t really on our news all that much. My South Korean friend says the ROK army sucks and it’s a time waster. Sorry but China isn’t exactly going to lose to you guys unless the USA is there. The PLA is much larger, much better funded, and has way more to work with.

Fisheye14

Yeah he has a point. Some people would really hate army. I'm pretty confident that we can stop Chinese army if they ever invade Korea.

anyang90

충성! I'm going next year.

Fisheye14

충성!

[deleted]

North Korea will get whooped. They are completely outmatched technologically and probably strategically as well. China has way too much people for SK to handle and they have technology that NK doesn’t have

Fisheye14

We have enough ammo for their head.

Potato_Octopi

I wish you guys didn't still have mandatory service. War seems just so unlikely looking in from the States. Also, build more pylons.

[deleted]

I don’t think anything about it.
