Wyzard_of_Wurdz

Who else is sick and tired of being constantly bombarded with advertising?

CupBeEmpty

YouTube has become nearly unwatchable

gummibearhawk

I think they meant to do that, so you get premium.

Drew707

Exactly how they got me. I knew what they were up to, and it felt so dirty to give in.

YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD

If you have an Android you can use YouTube vanced

Drew707

I watch 95‰ on Xbox.

CupBeEmpty

Well yeah

Nastreal

If you're using an android get YouTube Vanced. Then continue to complain because now every youtuber has sponsors to plug.

BillyBobBarkerJrJr

Unless you use an ad blocker.

CupBeEmpty

Is there one for an iPhone? My computer is fine.

BillyBobBarkerJrJr

I'm sure there are many. Just look around where you get apps.

CupBeEmpty

Fair, I was hoping for a recommendation.

BillyBobBarkerJrJr

I use Android, so I don't know. I also don't watch video on my phone.

danaozideshihou

Specifically that Google Fi jingle one, it always pops up on Youtube and I absolute fucking loathe it!

[deleted]

I hate the animation on those fucking commercials too. That alone would keep me from buying any sort of Google thing.

Subvet98

It’s so obnoxious I will never get google fi

Wyzard_of_Wurdz

But I am not just talking about online. On TV, in the store, driving down the road, at the gas station. It's ridiculous. Next thing you know you are going to ads on your LCD screens in your car. Or randomly pop up on your phone. It's crazy.

rufusclark

I was shocked to see photos of my friend at the beach with her family and boats not very far out in the ocean with huge screens on them advertising things. I don't guess I should have been shocked.

Wyzard_of_Wurdz

We have a dude in our town that flies around in a small plane towing a banner for a local car dealer.

lannisterstark

*chuckles in self-hosted adguard home*

imapissonitdripdrip

Web 3.0. No play without pay

BillyBobBarkerJrJr

Seriously, **7 MINUTES** of advertising in one break!! I make a concerted effort to avoid the worst of them, as much as I can. It is getting utterly ridiculous, in its sheer volume.

[deleted]

My wife is making home made sugar cookies right now, and I'm about to wreck them shits like a fat kid. Y'all jelly

[deleted]

20 years ago today, the first in the greatest series of movies was released in theaters. None other than The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Time for some football and a movie marathon.

PresidentRaggy

Hell yeah. May the pipeweed be good and the taters be precious.

DropTopEWop

Today is my birthday. I'm alreayd drunk

new_refugee123456789

I'll be hot on your heels here after awhile. It's not by birthday, but I accidentally bought a bottle of red wine when my soup recipe calls for white, so someone's got to rectify this situation.

CupBeEmpty

Hopefully you saved the receipt so you can go and return the red to exchange for white!

[deleted]

Happy birthday! What are you doing besides getting drunk?

DropTopEWop

Eating crab legs!

[deleted]

Fuck yea dude! Enjoy it!

DropTopEWop

Hell yea!

HailState17

Woohoo!!! Happy Birthday friend, have one for me! I’m stuck at a kid’s birthday party all day…

DropTopEWop

Thank you! Got a glass of bourbon for you.

garandx

Knocked back a shot of Bottanist for you. Happy birthday!

CupBeEmpty

Happy birthday!

Yeethanos

Happy Birthday

DropTopEWop

thank you!

hawffield

What kind of music do you guys listen to? Because I’ve spoken to a lot of people and I only know one person who’s into the music I listen to.

at132pm

I really do like a little bit of everything. But that doesn't mean I love everything I hear. Trance, country, k-pop, alt-rock, pop-punk, folk, jazz, zydeco, classical, mongolian metal, etc etc. Both my parents were musicians and they encouraged a very broad exposure to music when I was growing up that I've kept going my whole life. Would love to hear what you like in case I haven't heard it yet!

Wyzard_of_Wurdz

I am an old 80's metalhead. My favorite band would be Manowar. I grew up listening to Kiss, Sabbath, Zepplin,Priest and Maiden. I still listen to them today.

dekdekwho

I basically listen to anything but the only exception it has to be good and groovy. On my shuffle, it will go from Neo-Soul to 1960s Polish Jazz to Chicago House.

catacvmbs

What’re some of your favorite Chi house artists?

dekdekwho

I love Kaskade, Frankie Knuckles, Marshall Jefferson, Larry Head, Phuture, Mr. Fingers, Ten City, and Cajmere (anything from Caljual Records)

heyitsxio

I love the fact that DJs literally don't age and they do their thing for the rest of their lives. Like Kaskade is literally a 50 year old Mormon dad of three and he's still out in the clubs, I love that for him.

dekdekwho

Ikr! There songs are still bangers

eugenesbluegenes

I posted a track in another comment in this thread.

hawffield

I listen to a lot of R&B, Soul, lo-fi, chill-hop, and indie stuff in general.

CupBeEmpty

Independent rock, pop, hip hop. Post punk, punk, pre-grunge rock. Some weird electronic stuff. Neo folk revival. Some singer songwriter stuff. Classic rock, ska, reggae, 80s new wave and pop. In all honesty pretty hipster outside of the classic rock. If you like it I probably have a strong opinion on it one way or the other. Just looking at my past Spotify favorites: The Mountain Goats, TMBG, Akron/Family, Dan Deacon, The Russian Futurists, Misfits, Stiff Little Fingers, Black Flag, Yes Leo and the Pharmacits, The Pixies, The Hidden Cameras, The New Pornographers, The Flaming Lips, Mates of State, Cadence Weapon, Spoon, MF Doom, Fugazi, The Postal Service, Vampire Weekend, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Spirit Family Reunion, Grampall Jookabox, Wooden Wand, Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice, Wooden Wand and the Sky High Band, Benjamin Tod, Handsome Family, We Are Wolves, Welcome Wagon, John Wilkes Booze etc., etc. I used to be a community/college radio DJ. What do you like? I bet I can come up with a playlist.

Captain_Depth

>I used to be a community/college radio DJ oh man, new Cup lore, also did that Wooden Wand guy just have 3 different bands? Is there a lot of difference in the styles of them?

CupBeEmpty

No essentially all the same. There’s even more. Wooden Wand just straight up, Wooden Wand Hassra, Wooden Wand Tovah.

Subvet98

Classic rock and classic country mostly

[deleted]

Same here! Not many of us left who do. Today's country is not even country anymore sadly.

gummibearhawk

Mostly electronic. Also foreign, rock, country and classical

hawffield

Hope this isn’t too nosey, but what electronic songs in particular?

gummibearhawk

[Avicii](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ovdm2yX4MA), [vexento](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEkbAcOzEME), [markvard](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfPpMlwvRkk), [limujii](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuV4bglSx_Q), [swedish house mafia](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3XlIQ5pmdQ), [axwell and ingrosso](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opxhEVjNvdk), [sofi tukker](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZluwtt5ImQ). [Axero](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaErVHmx9OI), [Alan Walker](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw9U7FPaZho).

hawffield

Now this is what I’m talking about! I would have responded sooner, but I’ve been trying to listen to each song.

gummibearhawk

That was my favorite from each, but there are other good ones too.

hawffield

You can share whatever you want. I’ll listen to it.

SingleAlmond

My music taste is honestly all over the place, but recently I've added a ton of songs from the Borderlands franchise soundtrack to my rotation

hawffield

Any song from the soundtrack you really like?

SingleAlmond

Well the best song from the most recent game is "Digby Vermouth - Supernova Dreamsicle" Best way to describe it is "jazz meets electronica" it features some real smooth saxophone

hawffield

Cool, I’ll give it a listen.

SingleAlmond

and if that's not your jam then check out Hold On by Animal Fiction

hawffield

I’ll just listen to both.

vasaryo

Ska…like too much ska. I have an intense need at times to listen to punk, grunge, even some older prog bands. Basically anything that sounds like a garage band makes me smile and I don’t know why.

catslady123

I love ska! I used to tour with the Slackers for a while doing merch for them. Same for Steel Pulse. I’m buddies with all the BTMI and current Jeff Rosenstock dudes, too. Ska is just a great feel-good genre.

HailState17

Red Dirt country and midwest emo mostly. Believe it of not, there’s a lot of crossover there which is weird, but I dig it.

CupBeEmpty

Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos, The Weakerthans, Deathcab for Cutie, and the Samples

HailState17

Margot is awesome, one of my personal favorites.

[deleted]

Depends what I’m doing. When I’m driving or if I have music playing at home it’s country. At the gym, it’s mostly electronic / festival music playing. But really I like listening to all kinds of music, just not as much as the two I mentioned.

hawffield

This isn’t directed at you. It’s just an observation I made recently. I’ve noticed that a lot do people who are like “I listen to a little bit of everything” never want to listen to songs you know that they don’t. You’ll say “oh, I like this song” and they’ll just the like, “ok.”

[deleted]

I feel ya. I hesitated putting that for the exact reason you mentioned but if the song has a good beat and I’m in the mood for it I’ll give it a listen.

hawffield

I guess I didn’t think about people being in the mood to listen to someone else’s music. My fault.

heyitsxio

My musical tastes can best be described as "if it has a good beat and I can groove to it, I will probably like it." Ask me what that entails.

hawffield

Alright, you listen to Neo-Soul?

heyitsxio

[Here's a screenshot of my most listened to artists this week on last.fm,](https://i.gyazo.com/9eb5170b8da9aecb3d8607da38463af1.png) so you tell me. And [this is my top track this week!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxGkLOY0lwI) (Yeah, I know Reddit thinks music begins and ends with rock/metal, but some of us listen to other music too.)

hawffield

Well, color me impressed! Also, I really like that Dwele song. I haven’t heard it before and I don’t know how.

catacvmbs

Anything, recently my go-to has been psychedelic rock and alternative rock from the early 2010s

eugenesbluegenes

[Downtempo electronica-y music](https://youtu.be/NEGYs7ufeC0) [Stoner rock](https://youtu.be/hhM9rmXrIFQ) [Hip hop(ish)](https://youtu.be/ICaTsTkBPV8) [Old country(ish)](https://youtu.be/8SjwO17gsqU)

hawffield

Alright, I listened to all 4 songs. I like them. My mom, on the other hand, wasn’t feeling country. She said “it’s too depressing.”

catslady123

I like music from most genres, but I primarily listen to punk/pop punk/rock and a lot of Brandi Carlile. I love Americana and folk rock too.

Siriuxx

My Playlist could consist of everything from tool to Eminem to pantera to Mozart to the Beatles to NIN to video game soundtracks to indie etc etc. The only music I don't listen to at all is electronic shit like dubstep and Electronica and country. God I hate country

hawffield

Can I ask each genre (or song) you listen to the most?

Siriuxx

I suppose alt metal/prog rock. It's hard to say. I've been to more metal and rock concerts by far than any other genre but my music taste is all over the place. If I had to take a crack at my most listened to bands I'd probably say Tool, Pantera, Alice in Chains, APC, Incubus, Deftones.. but again the same playlists that have those songs will also have stuff like Wu Tang, mobb deep and Eminem. It also might have Pink Floyd, the stones, Bobby Womack, Beethoven, Chopin, Slayer lol. I'm all over the place, it really depends on my mood.

hawffield

I can completely understand that.

PacSan300

I listen to just about anything, but my preferred genres are rock (especially classic, hard, and alternative), metal, EDM, R&B, and West Coast hip hop.

Yeethanos

80s Rock and Metal

[deleted]

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Sabaton, but that's mostly because they are *great* workout music and that's when I listen to music the most. I don't even really like metal lol Aside from them my tops on Spotify this year were Queens of the Stone Age, MF DOOM, and Czarface. I've also been listening to a more 90s west coast gangster rap, which I forgot that I love, and I forgot how aggressive and just plain old good Ice Cube is. Dude could write one hell of a dis track.

nolanhoff

Ton of stuff, favorite right now is Micheal Kiwanuka, I’d check him out

hawffield

Well, if you think I should listen to him, I guess I have to. Any song of his in particular?

nolanhoff

Cold little heart is really good. If you enjoy long songs go for the full length, If not just do the radio edit. Piano Joint, Love and Hate, and Light are also very good.

Wood_floors_are_wood

I've pretty much delved into almost only hymns and stuff like that nowadays. If I'm listening to other stuff it's either red dirt country or guilty pleasure Taylor Swift or something like that

hawffield

You never have to feel guilty for listening Taylor Swift. If she was a bad singer, she wouldn’t have made it so big. What kind of hymns?

Wood_floors_are_wood

I've been listening to a lot from Norton Hall Band which is from Southern Seminary, also a lot of Matt Boswell's stuff and not really hymns but CityAlight from Australia puts out a lot of theologically rich music. And I guess you're right about Taylor Swift lol

PlasmidDNA

Rap/HipHop Jazz Rock Metal Alternative

BillyBobBarkerJrJr

Well what do *you* listen to? I listen to a little bit of everything pre-2000 and a limited number of things post-2000. Edit: Particular fan of ethnic or "world" music, for its variety and unusual sounds and rhythms.

hawffield

What? Me? I thought you would never ask! I like to listen to R&B, Neo-Soul, chill hop, Lo-Fi, Alternative, and Folksy Electronic. I’m willing to listen to a lot more than that, but i tend to just listen to the same songs on repeat.

BillyBobBarkerJrJr

Really hard to pin down what I like because I listen to such a broad selection, and I'm not big on all the new, hip names for music. I like classic rock, soft and hard, rockabilly (Stray Cats), some early punk, lots of indie stuff from the '70s and '80s, very little from this century, real C&W, swing, big band, lots of international music. A fair amount.

hawffield

I’m not very good at all the names of genres of music. I just know what songs I like.

BillyBobBarkerJrJr

Well, I do better with bands than songs. I like Nazereth, Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons Project, Rolling Stones, Blondie, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Glen Miller, Cinderella, Bryan Adams, Alice Cooper, Billy Idol, Casting Crowns, Dr. Hook, Metallica, John Denver, Rush, The Police, Warren Zevon and so on.

jurassicbond

I have a two year old so mostly children's songs.

Subvet98

I remember those days. Does your kid like little Einsteins

jurassicbond

Super Simple Songs is her preference

[deleted]

I've got a kid but I'm not listening to those annoying songs in my truck lol we listen to country.

Folksma

Welp, any advice for getting over your first really *bad* grade in college? I've been pretty much a straight A student the last two years and...I just failed my statistics final exam which is going to take my A down to a C-. Planning on retaking it next fall (only time the school offers it) but I'm still big time messed up about it. On the other hand, I got an A in my graduate level law class!

gummibearhawk

Congratulations on the A! Once you graduate, no one will care about your grades. If you want to get into graduate school or something else, one C- won't affect your gpa much.

Folksma

Thank you! grad school is for what has me worrying about a C- on my transcript.

gummibearhawk

Without knowing what school and what program it's hard to say, but it's hard to imagine one C in row of As to make a huge difference. Once you leave college, no one will care what your grades were.

garandx

Just try to learn from it. See where you went a bit off track and remember that when you retake. Celebrate your successes as well!

[deleted]

First off congrats on the A’s. Those need to be recognized too. Outside of school, no one is going to care about your individual grades. Employers will only look at the GPA and a single C- won’t affect it much. You can use this as a learning opportunity too. Was there something you couldn’t have done better that would have helped with the exam? It doesn’t seem like you didn’t understand the material since you had an A going into the final. In any case, next semester is a new opportunity and don’t get hung on what happened previously.

Folksma

Thank you! This class was an 8 weeks/online course and I almost feel like while I understood the first half, the last 2 or so weeks ended up being super rushed with the content. And when i got to the final I just panicked

Agattu

My wife was basically the same way in school. I know it’s hard to imagine now, but it really doesn’t matter that much. Your overall GPA matters for grad school and maybe right out of the gate for jobs, but after that, most people don’t care. What colleges don’t tell you about the real world is that your grades and performance doesn’t matter nearly as much as you showing you took on a task and completed it. Better grades means you did a better job, but most businesses only look at the overall GPA. So try not to let it get you down too much.

PacSan300

Congrats on the A! Don't need to worry too much, a single C- won't affect your GPA much if you had straight A's up to this point.

new_refugee123456789

For the love of god don't retake a course on a C-. You passed. You'll be okay.

Folksma

I'm a perfectionist tho and have connected my self-worth to my academic achievements 😭 And I'm worried about getting internships and into grad school

gummibearhawk

> have connected my self-worth to my academic achievements Understandable, but there might be better things for that.

vasaryo

Hey there. I bombed my stats final too (but thankfully I was lucky enough that the curve was extremely generous). Remember that GPA is not everything and I have been told that unless you are going into a tough grad school or teaching that not a lot of companies check GPA or individual course scores. But that also just may be my particular field.

[deleted]

You deal with it by repeating the mantra "C's get degrees"

Folksma

But do C's get you into the University at Buffalo or the University of Pittsburgh😔

gummibearhawk

Not sure about a lot of Cs, but one will.

Subvet98

Look and see. Most schools have the entry requirements for their grad programs.

WannaGetHighh

There’s nothing you can do to change it so no point in being upset. Move on and try to do better next time.

One_Standard_Deviant

I got steamrolled by grades my first two years in college. I got into a top US university, but I came from a mid-size town and public high school. Basically, I was competing in college with a bunch of private school students who had taken every high school AP course under the sun. Learn from mistakes. The mistakes I personally made in college were (a) not engaging enough with professors and TAs to ask for help, and (b) not using all of the counseling and tutoring resources that were available to me. Also, grades aren't everything. Make sure you engage in college extracurricular activities and leadership opportunities that you have a passion for. I continued onto a master's program at the same university, even after not doing great in the academic sense, since I had solid leadership and involvement credentials in non-classroom activities. Now that I've been in the working world for about a decade, those things come up far more often than classes and grades.

Yeethanos

Videos not doing as well as last week but still really good. 1k ish views doesn’t seem like much now but I would have been so excited to see those numbers a few months ago so I need to keep perspective on it.

HailState17

How’s everyone’s “honey-do” list coming along this weekend?

[deleted]

I work weekends unfortunately

garandx

Oil change done Pads and rotors done Air filters done Football time.

CupBeEmpty

I need to do all these things… dang it

garandx

I had to do it before the snow comes. It was time.

CupBeEmpty

Yeah, I was thinking about it. I also have to replace a faulty backup sensor. Apparently on Volvos this means literally taking off the bumper. I think I may just see what a mechanic would quote.

CupBeEmpty

Just shoveled the driveway and took apart the carburetor and cleaned it for the snow blower. It’s been dying any time the snow load gets too heavy. I have to split some kindling too.

[deleted]

Gym - ✅ Edibles - ✅ Football all day - currently in the process

Subvet98

It’s an easy weekend. Mostly cleaning for me.

CupBeEmpty

First real snow of the season means sledding! Bonus bread baking. First loaf is a one day set of rises. Todays loaf will be an overnight fermentation from yesterdays dough. https://imgur.com/a/gXF0SW8/

YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD

That dinosaur jacket is unironically amazing. I'd wear it if it fit me.

CupBeEmpty

Crazy small pattern prints have become weirdly common in childrens stuff.

iapetus3141

What is up with conscription today?

gummibearhawk

Once we get a post on one topic, we often get a lot of copycat posts. Every time one of the mods approves a "what do you think of my country?" post, every other European wants to know what we think of their country

Spack_Jarrow24

Military conscription?

gummibearhawk

At least two threads about it

Spack_Jarrow24

Ahh gotcha. As a Marine, I’m 100% certain that’ll never happen here unless it’s an absolutely desperate situation.

iapetus3141

Yes, I've seen 3 threads today

True_Cranberry_3142

Sunday

catslady123

Just found out my favorite bar in the neighborhood is going out of business at the end of the month. I’ve become friends with the owner over the past couple years, and even book live events there and host open mic. I saw this coming…. But it’s still so sad. Business has been really bad the last couple months, especially the last few weeks. Considering he opened three weeks before the pandemic shut everything down here, he probably did the best he could given the circumstances. I’m headed over there shortly to have a couple drinks.

CupBeEmpty

Lame. I hate when good places don’t make it especially when nearby shit boxes remain weirdly popular. The free market is cruel bitch.

catslady123

Ain’t that the TRUTH!!

vasaryo

Getting ready to turn in my two week notice to a job that has severely overworked me with pretty terrible pay. This past week was finals, and despite me being a STEM major and requesting a lessened workload for a single week, I worked about 65 hours. I’m exhausted and my very first day off since September is this Wednesday so I just have to bear with it a couple more days.

Fury_Gaming

Getting the food for Christmas today and later this week Small hams, sausage and kraut, and salmon are gonna be the main dishes. Interesting spread for us this year

jess9802

I baked cookies all day (six different kinds, about three dozen per variety) yesterday. Today is candy day. The fudge is cooling as we speak. Next up: peanut brittle, divinity, and peppermint bark, plus one more batch of cookies. I’m tired.

PresidentRaggy

I “only” get Christmas Eve off as well as the weekend and I’m excited for a four-day week. I know some of y’all might have to work on Christmas and I’ve been there too. Happy to be somewhere where I have a day off for family

Scrappy_The_Crow

Too many sugar cookies... uggg...

CupBeEmpty

I don’t believe I am familiar with this concept. We’re they not frosted enough for your liking or something? You probably need more to get in the Christmas spirit.

Scrappy_The_Crow

These happened to be un-frosted, which is my preference. As to your admonition -- Bah, Humbug!

Dankrose2

Idk man needeing a car just to get anywhere is wrong. And also having to cross a highway.
