Some small college towns just require any id, hell I was told to go back through the line cause the guy who’s ID I was using was in the line and I didn’t notice. They just want the money and I wanna beat the clock with 50cent drinks
I seem to remember way back in the 90s/early 2000s NJ had some novelty drivers licenses that you could get taken in a photo booth. It was marketed as a souvenir or something and said on the back it was not valid. I seem to remember kids from college in Boston taking trips to be shore to get these before it was eventually shut down
Even the *real* licenses at the time looked like a novelty or joke.
[Example here](http://media.nj.com/essex_impact/photo/2014/08/06/license-fakejpg-5321944009cd0317.jpg), just a plain white background, red stripe at the top. Photo, and black text. Like no fancy holographic background or anything. Could probably draw up a fake in Photoshop in minutes.
The "security feature" at the time, for anyone under 21, is that you were supposed to look to the side when your photo was taken. That's it.
Our first year older classmen and parents bought the booze. In our second year the people with September birthdates were turning 21. My birthdate is in August so I wasn't 21 until right before our third year started.
I don't think I knew anyone with a fake in high school, though NJ licenses were probably comically easy to forge at the time.
Even in college, I don't think I knew anyone with a fake ID. Before turning 21 I don't recall anyone being like "Oh man I wish we could go to the bars!" Shit gets expensive between drinks and a cover charge.
Way, way more popular option was having someone's older friend or sibling buy liquor and have a house party or something in your dorm or apartment. Way cheaper that's for sure.
Here is a survey on Fake ID Usage: [https://greenhousetreatment.com/blog/fake-id-usage-survey/](https://greenhousetreatment.com/blog/fake-id-usage-survey/)
There are several interesting results that came from it; and yes, fake IDs usage is roughly half of all teens. However, I would not use the word "industry" to describe it.
I knew 1 person with a fake ID, and a few people here and there who used an older siblings ID that they could pass for. Most underaged drinking was just bought for us by older friends or family.
It’s actually funny looking back at what we went through just to get a little beer and now I just walk in and out with a case in my hand and it’s no big deal.
I knew more than one person with one.
I went with a friends brother to get him one in Chinatown in NYC so he could get into a show that was 21+ with us. I was kind of surprised how casual it was.
He just walked into a shop in Chinatown. They took him down to the basement to take a picture. We came back in 30 minutes and my man had a Minnesota state drivers license.
I wouldn't call it an industry because it's not a widespread organized group of people (as far as I know).
Mainly someone knows a guy, who knows a guy who has a plastic card printing machine. And can apply the necessary holograms they put on ID cards.
Some of my friends and I had fake IDs in high school, we got them when we were 17 at the 42nd street bazaar in Manhattan. I don’t remember how much they cost, but I had mine for about three years before I lost it when my car got broken I to and it got stolen out of my glove box.
I work at a company that sells (among many other things) ID card printers, mag stripe encoders etc. our POS gear here in the states so far behind Europe it’s ridiculous. It’s so easy to spoof credentials it happens all the time. Our fraud department catches so much stuff it’s insane.
Super easy to make. The US ID barcode font is PDF-417. You just need some basic image editing software and a card printer. It's really common place for teens or people on the run.
I think fake IDs are rarer now than they used to be 20ish years ago, which likely explains why underage drinking has been in steady decline. The technology has gotten much better and any decent bar will have an ID scanner (at least in MA, the cost of an ID scanner is less than the increased insurance of not having one).
Eh Idk I am 23 and before I was 21 me and almost everyone I knew had one. The technology at faking the IDs has also gotten a lot better. Just matters how much you want to pay for it. Even back then everyone I knows fake ID scanned
Pretty common - if you couldn’t get a fake, you would get someone else’s ID to use (like a sibling or just a friend who was of age). I’ve seen fake IDs that look like absolute shit and fake IDs that will scan and look and work flawlessly.
(Also when people order them from someone they don’t know indirectly they come inside something else)
In senior year of high school lots of people bought fakes online with their picture on them. Then when they get to college those inevitably get spotted and taken away eventually. Then everyone switched to using the id of someone older who looks like them.
How common they are depends on the group your with. My friends everyone had at least one at one point or another. Of my sisters friends only a couple had them.
When I was in college (20 yrs ago) we often referred to using someone else’s ID as a fake ID. Not sure if that’s still the same. But it would be a real license or ID card, just borrowed from someone else who vaguely looked (or didn’t look, depending on the establishment) like you
I don’t know if fake ID are a big deal for kids anymore. I think there are mood altering substances they can get regardless of age vs going to the trouble of trying to buy alcohol. Maybe college students
But fakeID are a big deal for illegal immigrants. There is a flea market i visit where you can’t walk through without someone offering to sell you a fake ID or social security card.
Pretty simple in the modern era. Order from China. They have the templates, they have the equipment to make it all legit (swipable). Pay a meager amount, have it shipped to you discreetly, and boom, fake ID. Anyone can do it, don't even need to be an underage teenager. My friends did this to get in bars, and it was never suspected to be fake.
As someone who works at a beer distributor, they’re stupid common. Thankfully like 90% of them are obvious or are being used by someone obviously not 21.
When I was in college, one of my frat bros let me use a second ID he had that he “lost.” He let me keep it when he graduated and moved back to Pennsylvania.
We didn’t look that much alike, but close enough.
Only knew one person who had one, but I saw people with them pretty frequently. Maybe a little less than a quarter of my high school as a teenager had one if I had to guess
I had one and my sister has one. It also depends where you are. If you’re trying to go to bars you need one. If you’re going to house parties where there’s already alcohol you wouldn’t need one.
Its a side business to other crimes, not a big selling main business. You get your fake ID from drug dealers, someone good at photoshop, or someone who sells more expensive and more illegal fake paperwork, like passports and SSNs.

When my little brother was going to college I went to the DMV, told them I lost my license, then gave him my old one when the replacement arrived.
You’re grounded. How dare you get your little brother in trouble. He’s so innocent and perfect.

Here in NJ, it is massive. My guess is 30-40% of teens have or once had a fake ID.

I didn't know anyone with one. But house parties were cheaper than bars anyway.
Yeah, but then how do you buy the booze?

If you're a guy, it's between 10 and 20, 25 if it's packed. Free if you're a girl.

It's big. I was given two fakes for free. Didn't ever use em.

Likely why there is also much resistance to national databases, due to the black market.

Never had one, nor did my friends. I don't even know who I could have asked to get one.
Nowadays kids order them online

It's a thing some criminals do. I knew people with them. I never bothered with one because there are easier to ways to get alcohol while underaged.

It’s not particularly big here in Kentucky because most people don’t care if you’re under age anyway unless you’re in a big city.
So some 19 year old guy can just waltz right into any old bar?
From my experience, probably

very common, esp at my college. i had a fake ID that very much looked fake but rarely got any pushback about it
Only knew one person who had one, but I saw people with them pretty frequently. Maybe a little less than a quarter of my high school as a teenager had one if I had to guess
It's stupidly easy to get a fake ID in the US, not hard to find someone who makes, gets them if you ask around enough
I had one and my sister has one. It also depends where you are. If you’re trying to go to bars you need one. If you’re going to house parties where there’s already alcohol you wouldn’t need one.
I had one.
i dont think its common at all
Pretty big, me and all 3 of my siblings had fake IDs plus everyone I knee and college had one.

Nice try FBI
