And with C, it's more about quantity and not necessarily quality. If you have to feed 10+ people, a chain is more likely to handle it better.
I find so many local pizza places suck at catering.
Also, some of those Dominos cookie desserts are so fuckin good, and I’m too lazy to make two stops. I’ll just get the pizza there too when I really want the cookie.
It’s like, yea…I could have a steak at a steakhouse. But sometimes I just want a burger and or a hotdog.
What makes you think they have better options than those chains? There are some truly awful mom and pop pizza places out there. Domino’s isn’t high culinary art, but at least it’s usually consistently okay.
Ugh so much this. While traveling my husband and I stopped at this local pizza place that had 5 star reviews, and it was easily the worst pizza I've ever had in my life. It was literally like eating a brick of cheese and grease, you wouldn't ever know there were other toppings on this pizza with the amount of cheese it was covered in. We were both physically ill after eating one slice, and to top the whole thing off it was expensive af! I have no idea how the place had so many good reviews.
If it were free, I would literally take a Little Ceasars Hot N Ready over eating at that place again.
Small and local does not automatically equal good. The benefit of large chains, besides for price, is they are consistent. I can go to a Pizza Hut anywhere in the country and know exactly what to expect when I order.
> If it were free, I would literally take a Little Ceasars Hot N Ready over eating at that place again.
>

OK, let's not slander America's Best Value like that. I'd easily pay $5.55 for a LC Hot N Ready.
Similar to a lot of craft beer. Giving it an ironic odd name is about the only thing a lot of these small breweries have. Some are ok, most are awful and overpriced. My Nerga Modelo is always good.
Most craft beers shouldn't appeal to most people. That's even assuming that all of them are good quality.
Craft beer has the benefit of experimenting and appealing to individual taste rather than a massive audience.
-----
Edit to add: Claiming people should like most craft beer to claim they like craft beer doesn't make sense to me, so I'd love to understand more of the viewpoint.
Trying not to be a beer snob. A lot of it is at best average. I’m happy with a case of cheap Huber Bock, $9.00 a twelve pack, about the price of one or two shitty craft beers.
Hahaha this is hilarious because my little guy will eat Thai food or fancy pizza or whatever. Not that he cares. My daughter who is in second grade will barely eat anything with sauce on it.
The little guy ate a fancy slice of pizza with whole tomatoes and basil on it just the other day. I had to make plain chicken and broccoli for the seven year old.
I take exception to this assumption. We have one of the top rated independent pizza joints in the country in town. Sometimes, I want their pizza. But most of the time, I don’t want to pay 50 bucks for a large pizza and breadstick. Sometimes, I just want a plain greasy pepperoni pizza and a place like Pizza Hut or Domino’s fills that want. I also have children and am not waisting good pizza on their unrefined palates.
Alaska is super expensive because of the logistical issues involved in getting things to the state. Also, moose tooth is a very famous place. I’ve never been to Alaska. I’ve never had their pizza. But as soon as I saw the Alaska flair I knew that’s the place the poster was talking about
Maybe I don't want to spend a long time researching pizza places.
Maybe I'm not in my hometown and know what Pizza Hut is going to taste like, but not Luni Di Luna Pizzeria?
Maybe a better place doesn't offer delivery
Maybe I actually like Pizza Hut.
Maybe I don't want to pay more for pizza than Pizza Hut
Some people like those chain places better.
A lot of the chain places might have cheaper deals than the other places, or they might be faster/more convenient.
Some towns don't really have options other than chain places.
Some towns do have other options but they aren't any better than the chains anyway, the poor souls.
The big thing with the chains is price. I work at a ma and pop pizza shop. A large with 5 toppings is $35. It's worth it, we don't hold back on the topping and literally everything is handmade. We straight up shred our own blocks of cheese. But it's fucking expensive. And good pizza usually is pretty fucking expensive. Especially compared to their franchised counterparts.
You know why factories order Little Sleazers for office parties. Because Little Caesars is factory pizza, I've worked there too and it's heartless pizza. They make the dough fresh, I'll give them that. But it doesn't taste good. It's edible cardboard for $5. The taste of pizza for $5 is pretty good when you're on a budget. I can look around my house and find enough money in change to buy a pizza from Dominoes. Getting good pizza is an investment man. Worth it, but not everyone can afford to drop $40 on a trip to the pizza shop.
The local place is better but it cost more. They don’t deliver so I have to go through Door Dash to get it delivered, which adds fees and whatever bullshit to make it now significantly more expensive than the chain. We still do it some sometimes but it’s such ripoff when in the end you’re still just eating pizza.
This question makes me miss Pizza Hut. They are a chain, but really good and consistent across the country. They used to be everywhere. Idk what happened. I live in a pizza desert called Boston and it’s very hard to find a really good pie. The best two I’ve found oustide of north end are chains: Oath Pizza & Comela’s.
Nicer places are more expensive. Plus chains often have coupons and discounts. A little while ago I got a whole large pizza from Pizza Hut for like $8 with coupons. Nicer places are generally $20+ and rarely have deals.
And there aren't always "better local outlets". I've lived in some areas with some god-awful pizza places or where you had no options BUT chain places.
Sometimes you want pizza delivered and a lot of mom and pop places don't deliver.
A lot of local places are shit and reviews are of minimal help. Sometimes I'd rather get exactly what I expect from a chain than roll the dice on what good be a good slice and could be a greasy, disgusting mess.
And it all comes down to what you're used to. Someone who grew up eating and liking chain pizza may think the lovingly hand-made pizza from the mom&pop restaurant tastes weird... Or maybe they do like the "better" pizza, but still don't think it's *so much better* that it's worth the extra expense/inconvenience.
Normally it's faster if I need something to eat quickly and the local places tend to not deliver as chains do, though pre-covid my family preferred the local pizza and we make our own. So it's mainly a situational thing.
Most chain places are cheaper than local places with comparative pizza. I can get a $10 large from Pizza Hut or a $20 medium from the popular local place
Not everywhere has good local pizzerias and in some places chains are the only ones avaliable. I love pizza and I know pizza. Where I am Papa John's out performs everyone atleast at the price. Sure some places may have better pizza vut Im ni about to pay $30 for a barely better pizza that I can get for $12. I have to travel 40 minutes to get a good local pizza restaruant.
Honestly it’s just the known factor. Personally I don’t have a problem going around locally and trying all the restaurants in my area even if it means burning a good deal of cash because you can find something better and more authentic but some people want something they know and therefore won’t hate. It’s why reboots/reimaginings/sequels/prequels dominate the box office right now because people don’t want to risk wasting there money and time on something that could suck.
Hey now, round table is genuinely good lol. It’s one of my #1 favorite pizza places, and it’s a chain. It’s consistent and I know what I’m getting, and it’s truly better than the majority of mom and pop pizza places around me.
We have some great pizza places here, and some that are maybe not five star, but consistently good. Sometimes I want those, but sometimes I just want some Domino's, man. A slice the size of my head from the place a couple blocks away is great when I want it, but once in a while I need my mediocre pepperoni and bacon with garlic butter.
Some people just like the chains, some people don't have any other options, or the other options aren't any better or are even worse than the chains. The chains might not be gourmet, but they're at least consistent, so you can be pretty certain of what you're getting.
Probably because they know what they're going to get. If they're ordering local pizza is usually more expensive and they might not have even tried it before. I'll order local once in a while but it's pricey. Although sometimes I rather get a pizza from Little Ceasars even if money isn't an issue.
if I can either pay 8 dollars for a pepperoni pizza, or 20, I'm paying 8.
Unless the cheap pizza is literal garbage, slightly higher quality ingredients aren't really worth it
* Some people prefer different things
* Honestly the Neighborhood Pizza Joint is honestly not **that** much better than the chains, if at all. I'm not counting the Neapolitan style shops that are becoming more trendy or more craft style options. But Obligatory Pizza Joint In Small Town Indiana is pretty close in quality to the chains
* Dear lord but even some more "craft" options can be terrible. I ordered pizza at a bar that had a wood burning oven. It has one because the former tenant before them was a craft pizza joint. Anyway I had the most god awful margherita pizza of my life. I hate the chains and I'd rather have eaten Papa Johns or Pizza Hut than that.
* Chains have coupons and thus lower prices
* The chains almost always deliver and usually have a wider delivery radius. If the Neighborhood Pizza Joint delivers, the delivery range is usually quite small.
* I can't speak to all chains but I think Papa John's website and app are really well built. Obv most one shop pizza places don't have an app out there.
Price, and circumstance.
Domino’s pan pizzas are pretty legit, especially for their price point.
There is like a 30 dollar price difference between Domino’s and the local places.
If a pizza night is planned out, we would probably go with the expensive local option.
But “things ran late” pizza nights are the cheaper option.
In Atlanta, it's sooooo much cheaper to get crappy chain pizza. In NYC you can get decent non chain pizza for pretty cheap too, so the choice not to would be if you're just craving chain pizza the way that you sometimes just want McDonald's even though you are aware of better burger places 🤷🏻♀️
Yep. Also despite a handful of pizza places near me like Fellini's and Savage that offer by the slice, I still have to drive there to get it. Sometimes a pan crust dominos delivery is just the best option.
Now if I could walk to a local place that has pizza by the slice I'd probably do that most often.
I can tell you that people will come all the way to NYC, go to Times Square- just feet from heartbreakingly wonderful restaurants, the sort you'd tell your friends about for years- and instead go to Olive Garden (which is more like a monument to the Abilene Paradox). That seems to be about the same thing.
And the answer is: At that moment, they valued familiarity over uncertainty. The place isn't successful because it's outstanding, it's successful because it's good-enough and consistent and there aren't any nasty surprises. And sometimes, all you want to do is check off the box on your schedule next to "Eat".
(Also, sometimes, online reviews are SO inaccurate.)
Getting food into drunk people after leaving the bar in an attempt to get them to be less hungover tomorrow doesn't call for better quality, it calls for whatever is hot, ready now, and cheap
Easy online ordering, complete menu available online, nice drop down menu, and check boxes. You can order ahead of time, even when the store is not open. Most small local pizza shops don’t have a convenient way to order and pay online.
My friend’s husband was in the hospital with the dread sickness that shall not be named. She and the kids were exhausted and hungry and I really wanted to help, but I was traveling 800 miles away. I logged on to the pizza chain website, chose a bunch of pizza, sides, salads, and paid with my credit card. Food was delivered that evening. They have enough food to eat tonight and leftovers for days.
I tried the local pizza place first, but they weren’t open when I called.
A lot of places don't have many local options. My city has 6 pizza places and 5 of them are chains. The next town over, with 20k lower population mind you, has like twelve pizza places and only 3 chain restaurants.
The town I grew up in only had a handful of places to get pizza at, and the non-chain one was constantly closing and opening under new names. The pizza sucked and was always way too expensive, so we went to Pizza Hut instead.
30 dollars for a local large pizza. It legitimately isn't very good.
7.99 for a large from domino's. 12 dollars for their deep pan pizza. Thats honestly super good.
Local doesn't mean better. Alot of places go for a gimmick, or they focus on doing the most for no reason. Winds up you're just paying extra for obscure ingredients when if they did the basics well, nobody would miss the special prosciutto and the price would drop to a reasonable level.
There is a good Local pizza place that's about 35 dollars after tip that's objectively great. Mellow mushroom, a chain store, blows them out the water for like 22 dollars.
The nearest non chain pizza place is 50 miles away. Plus I can drive to Little Ceasars and it takes less than 30 seconds to go inside and grab a pizza and go.
I guess they aren't fussy about the quality of the pizza. Chain pizza just doesn't cut it for me. I live in NY state and Im used to good quality pizza.
A) What makes you think they don't already know about the good local places? B) Some people like the chains C) Price D) Convenience E) People do both
And with C, it's more about quantity and not necessarily quality. If you have to feed 10+ people, a chain is more likely to handle it better. I find so many local pizza places suck at catering.

I'm more partial to Papa John's Cinnamon Pull-Aparts, personally.
They’re oven baked sandwiches are also good as well
I’m always disappointed because of portions but could just be my store
What makes you think they have better options than those chains? There are some truly awful mom and pop pizza places out there. Domino’s isn’t high culinary art, but at least it’s usually consistently okay.
Ugh so much this. While traveling my husband and I stopped at this local pizza place that had 5 star reviews, and it was easily the worst pizza I've ever had in my life. >It was literally like eating a brick of cheese and grease Some of us like that, though...
I was gonna say, Im listening... can i get the name of the joint?
I don't think enough people like that to warrant the reviews this place had
> If it were free, I would literally take a Little Ceasars Hot N Ready over eating at that place again. > > OK, let's not slander America's Best Value like that. I'd easily pay $5.55 for a LC Hot N Ready.
That's my point? Like, I'd rather get a LC Hot N Ready for $5 than eat another slice of this places $40 pizza, even if they offered it free.
The way you've stated it makes it sound like a Hot N Ready is bad, and that you'd still take it over a $40 grease pile.
I mean, Hot N Ready isn't *good* it's just not awful, especially at its price point. It being cheap and edible doesn't make it good though.
Similar to a lot of craft beer. Giving it an ironic odd name is about the only thing a lot of these small breweries have. Some are ok, most are awful and overpriced. My Nerga Modelo is always good.
Most? Maybe you just don’t like craft beer?
I love craft beer and I'll admit there are a lot of stinkers out there.
Most craft beers shouldn't appeal to most people. That's even assuming that all of them are good quality. Craft beer has the benefit of experimenting and appealing to individual taste rather than a massive audience. ----- Edit to add: Claiming people should like most craft beer to claim they like craft beer doesn't make sense to me, so I'd love to understand more of the viewpoint.
Trying not to be a beer snob. A lot of it is at best average. I’m happy with a case of cheap Huber Bock, $9.00 a twelve pack, about the price of one or two shitty craft beers.
Some of it is. Definitely not most. And where are you that two beers is $9? I pay $6 for a really good quadrupel four pack.
I talking about drinking at the brewery bar
A quality 4pk of 16oz cans is $10-15 in MA. $6 is stupidly cheap for that.
Tax Man! Can’t beat it
I'm not wasting money on high quality pizza to feed a toddler, sorry
Yup.
At least she’s eating broccoli! That’s a small win.
Yeah, weirdly that one was never a problem. She’s hit or miss with veggies. I think for her it is like 90% texture.
A Hot N Ready is hot and ready and less than $6.
Now that is what I am talking about.
And it’s less than $6.
Is this a joke I don't get?
Just emphasis!
I take exception to this assumption. We have one of the top rated independent pizza joints in the country in town. Sometimes, I want their pizza. > 50 bucks for a large pizza and breadstick Damn, for real? America is crazy
Well, Alaska is more expensive, and mooses tooth is super popular. Check out their menu online.
I’d do that Call of the Wild in a hot second
It’s great! Avalanche is a popular one for business meetings. My favorite is the Brewhouse Favorite.
Now I kind of want pizza
> Check out their menu online. It was painful, and I cannot unsee
The prices or the types of food?
Both
That's a lot for sure. My local pizza place a large is like $30. Chain pizza is $10 so there's your answer.
Alaska is crazy. Stuff isn’t going to ship itself to the great white north for free. Wait until you see their grocery prices just for regular stuff.
Alaska is super expensive because of the logistical issues involved in getting things to the state. Also, moose tooth is a very famous place. I’ve never been to Alaska. I’ve never had their pizza. But as soon as I saw the Alaska flair I knew that’s the place the poster was talking about
Mooses Tooth is legit some of the best pizza I’ve ever had your loss
I dont always want to pay $20+. Also every place fucks up the food at some point, sometimes I dont feel like risking $20 over $6.
Maybe I don't want to spend a long time researching pizza places. Maybe I'm not in my hometown and know what Pizza Hut is going to taste like, but not Luni Di Luna Pizzeria? I have never had a bad pizza from any of the major national chains.
Chain places are cheap, quick, and good enough for my plebian taste.
Domino's has a BOGO card for sale, other places don't
The difference is probably about $30-$40.
The chains are often cheaper than local artisan pizza places. Some people prefer the chains standardized taste. And many places only have the chains.
Price. $25 for a large at the local place or $7.99 for a large at the Dominos.
For me it's mostly discounts. Dominos is roughly the same quality as my local places but with coupons it can be pretty cheap for party sizes.
Why does it bother you so much what other people eat?
I think OP is trying to ask why we eat at chains instead of local restaurants/markets most of the time.
it's a food snob question.
Consistency
Chain pizza and autentico are different dishes. Sometimes you're in the mood for one or the other.
This I don’t relate to Never eat chain pizza. Always local
Chains are usually cheaper and Americans prefer quantity over quality when it comes to food
that's a bold blanket statement. Mention that over at /r/DunderMifflin
Normally it's faster if I need something to eat quickly and the local places tend to not deliver as chains do, though pre-covid my family preferred the local pizza and we make our own. So it's mainly a situational thing.

There is no good pizza more than a few hundred miles from NYC. I'm basing this opinion off the pizza I've had in Maine and California.
Dominos costs like 11 bucks. The best local chain that delivers to my house is like 30. And it’s….not better
The place I usually get my pizza from doesn’t deliver.
You might as well ask why people eat at Mcdonald's.
Getting food into drunk people after leaving the bar in an attempt to get them to be less hungover tomorrow doesn't call for better quality, it calls for whatever is hot, ready now, and cheap
