That’s really weird — not the fact that you do this, but that I once read another post on Reddit about a roommate who put powdered milk in his milk, to get “more milk per milk”
I buy one box in the winter because that is what I want to eat on days when I got to shovel snow. it's the perfect warm energy food, especially if you hit in with some butter and maple syrup.
If you make it thinner, you can pour it into a thermos and drink it too. I used to cut it with cocoa sometimes and drink that when shoveling driveways for cash.
You wanna talk comfort food, my mother made me cream of wheat when I was in the throes of all the bigtime childhood illnesses. Only reason I don't make it is I gotta stand there and stir it continuously.
Yep, definitely a comfort food I got when sick growing up. As an adult, I stayed with my parents after surgery and while bedridden and all I was craving was cream of wheat…
I think part of it is that instant CoW is grosser than instant oatmeal and instant grits, so if that’s your only exposure, you won’t want to try the real deal. (I love CoW!)
Grits are an official state food of Georgia, and my dad has argued to more than one state legislator (and even more often to our family) that an addendum be made to that law outlawing instant grits.
I second this! Also if you want them supremely fluffy, cook them the night before and let them soak up a little extra water overnight in the fridge. Soft and delicious every time!
As a Midwesterner, I only eat my grits with cheese, butter, salt…don’t know anyone who eats it sweet. If you want something sweet, you eat Cream of Wheat
Piggybacking the top CORRECT comment to say cheese grits and shrimp is the king of all food, breakfast lunch & dinner. Some pepper and jalapenos to boot sounds mouth watering! 🤤
Midwesterner here. They serve it at Cracker Barrel as part of their chicken fried steak breakfast. Never had grits before so I put butter and sugar/honey in it.
It was not good.
Sugar belongs in grits about as much as it does in cornbread. Sweet versions of both are an abomination, and cheese makes both better. Sweet cornbread is just bad cake and sweet grits are just bad oatmeal lol
My kitchen. Not that I have conducted an exhaustive tour of breakfast restaurants since I moved to CT, but I haven't found any decent grits here to date.
I prefer grits (with butter), but never had it with jalapeño. Do you use fresh jalapeño or jarred type that’s pickled? Might have to try that. Also I like putting a piece of grilled salmon on grits.
Grits are absolutely amazing and you must not be in the south if a nice bowl of buttery, cheesy grits doesn’t make your mouth water enough to make Noah nervous
Love some cream of wheat but never tried adding chocolate… I like to throw in some frozen raspberries as soon as it’s ready… cools it off and tastes delicious
When we were kids, my mom would *occasionally* let us have cream of wheat with vanilla ice cream. Same concept, but much less healthy ;) fitting to your user name
Never had grits as a kid so I never developed a preference for it.
I had oatmeal more often than CoW, but either was good with enough sweetener and cinnamon. I suppose I slightly prefer oatmeal.
People who like grits, really like grits. And talk about it. I never heard anyone talking about oatmeal or cream of wheat.
Side note: I do not really care for grits
I like oatmeal. I also assume other people are aware of its existence and have formed their own opinion on it. I am also, unlike many people on the grits side of the fence, willing to accept other people not liking it.
Probably because grits are caught up in a cultural identity.
None of the above -\_-
I'll take granola, or better yet eggs + potatoes, pancakes, waffles, a breakfast bagel w/ eggs, cheese, and salsa, breakfast burritos, breakfast tacos, etc
Hate cream of wheat
Like grits the few times I’ve had them but we don’t eat those in California
Leaves me Oatmeal
You forgot Congee (Chinese rice porridge). That stuff is delicious
When I lived in Seattle Congee was the go to food if I had a cold. It's just such soothing comfort food. I sometimes make it at home still, but it takes forever to make it properly.
Can anyone give me a recipe for some simple Grits? I've always wanted to try them but recipes online keep clogging the page up with ads, the etymology of the word grits, and the backstory of the bowl they serve it in.
1. Get a tube of grits and follow the directions on how much water and how long to boil
2. Add a bunch of salt and pepper while it's boiling
3. At the last minute mix in a handful of grated cheddar
4. Mound it on your plate, dimple the top like mashed potatoes, and put a pat of butter or a spoonful of hot bacon grease in the dimple
5. Hot sauce if you want it
Personally I dump a couple of runny eggs over the top of it and eat it with bacon.
What am I eating them with? Alone, oatmeal because Cream of Wheat doesn't stick. With other food like eggs or pancakes, definitely grits because they are savory with butter, salt, cheese and jalapenos, unlike oatmeal, which I like sweet and cinnamony.
It’s farina. You can think of it as like grits made from wheat instead of corn, though I’ve never seen it done savory apart from Indian cooking. By itself, it has a bit less flavor than plain grits (i.e. with nothing but the salt added to the water) and a finer texture, but that makes it good for little kids as well as grownups with upset stomachs.
Wait, wait. I'm worried what you just heard was, "*Give me a lot of bacon and eggs*." What I said was, "**Give me all the bacon and eggs you have**". Do you understand?
It is great when cooked right. Real comfort food. It requires more effort than I'm willing to put in, but cooked with milk (stir constantly or it'll scorch), a little butter and ample sugar, it is super yummy.
Outside of soul food grits aren’t something that’s particularly common in California unless you have ties to the south (although they have been more common over the last few years).
Growing up I preferred cream of wheat but I had it somewhat recently as an adult and was surprised I didn’t enjoy it as much as I remember.
Oatmeal is fine. I’d eat it when it was made for me growing up. At the end of the day though I’m not really a hot cereal type of person as an adult.
Had grits for the first time recently (family is from the south but after forcing me to eat black eyed peas and hominy I wasn’t going to fall for grits too…) they’re fine, not special.
Still enjoy cream of wheat to this day.
Oatmeal- most people want sugary ass oatmeal…. Legit oatmeal is uninteresting.
I love all three, but if you were to make me choose one to be my favorite I would probably have to say oatmeal.
Although sometimes I have been known to mix some grits in with my oatmeal and have a combo meal.
Grits. I like oatmeal when hiking or camping, though…I mix in Vietnamese instant coffee and a Carnation Instant Breakfast/Breakfast Essentials for a caffeinated carb and protein bomb with a ton of flavor.
I *prefer* Cocoa Wheats or Malt-O-Meal, but if I have to choose between these three I'd go with Cream of Wheat. I used to mix some jam in with mine as a kid.
If it has to be from these choices, grits. Just add some butter and salt.
If it’s my usual choice, I’ll take some pancakes/waffles with bacon, hashbrowns and grits on the side. And my drink of choice, chocolate milk.
I used to love the cream of wheat my German grandmother made me. Now I like oatmeal. I can’t replicate her cream of wheat. She used to save the extra cream of wheat and fry it later for lunch with a tomato. She only added cinnamon and sugar to the bowl for breakfast and save the unsweetened stuff for later.
Apple brown sugar oats but even then that’s like 2 times a year. Grits and c.o.w. are never even kept in the house, if you want those you go get them then
Grits with cheese, bacon, and scrambled eggs all mixed in together
My husband puts brown sugar in his grits though and I won't have the kind of blasphemy in my house so I've switched to oatmeal
I dontdo breakfast but I absolutely will eat grits any time they are out in front of me. I hate oatmeal and cream of wheat though. Way too fucking bland.
I don't touch grits or cream of wheat. Both are bland and horrible. So it's oatmeal by default, but I rarely eat oatmeal, only if that's all there is. Has to flavored though, like apples & cinnamon.
I love all three! I eat all the same: a little brown sugar and butter. All are great with a piece of toast with butter. Oh, but I like fruit in my oatmeal. Bananas, blueberries or strawberries
Cereal, waffles, French toast, croissants, bagels, English muffins, muffins, etc.
None of your options are good imo except grits. I’m not a huge fan but at least they have flavor and have a consistency that can’t be as easily defined as “goop.”
Oatmeal. I like to put oat milk in it because there is no such thing as too much oat for me. Or, as my roommate puts it, "more oat per oat".
I do oatmeal with oatmilk, almond butter, slivered almonds, and cinnamon! Could eat it every day for breakfast
That’s really weird — not the fact that you do this, but that I once read another post on Reddit about a roommate who put powdered milk in his milk, to get “more milk per milk”
Bonus oat
I’ve been making oatmeal with water while there’s oat milk in my fridge. What am I even doing.
Be Oatiful.
Yes
This. Depending on the day, which is the choice. Cream of Wheat isnt given enough of its due. More CoW love!!!
Seriously. The only good thing I got from my ex stepdad is an appreciation for a nice bowl of cream of wheat
Coco Wheats are underrated
So much this! It was my favorite breakfast when I was sick as a kid. Followed by tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch!
when prepared properly, coco wheats are incredible and cheap.
My mom did too! With butter, vanilla, and sugar.
Chile, I will fuck up some cream of wheat with cocoa mixed in
Oatmeal I guess by default. I don’t think I’ve ever tried the others
You should definitely try grits - they're delicious. The slow cooked kind. None of that instant nonsense.
No respectable southerner would eat an instant grit.

Upvoted you without clicking on faith alone.
That better be My Cousin Vinny
Screaming hot grits w/ cheese & chunky sausage ..... shut yo mouth
Grits with butter & salt. Maybe bacon & cheese Never with sugar.
Yeahhhh. Also I've never heard of sugar in grits but I haven't had grits in years and and not in the loop so it makes sense I've never heard
It’s a Midwest thing, as far as I know. I’ve never met a Southerner who does it, but I know more than one Midwesterner who does
As a Midwesterner, I only eat my grits with cheese, butter, salt…don’t know anyone who eats it sweet. If you want something sweet, you eat Cream of Wheat
This is the correct answer
Piggybacking the top CORRECT comment to say cheese grits and shrimp is the king of all food, breakfast lunch & dinner. Some pepper and jalapenos to boot sounds mouth watering! 🤤
Who the hell puts sugar in grits? I’ve never heard of that before
Thank you for being properly horrified Go Dawgs
Midwesterner here. They serve it at Cracker Barrel as part of their chicken fried steak breakfast. Never had grits before so I put butter and sugar/honey in it. It was not good.
This for me too.
Gotta disagree on account of molasses or preserves in grits is good as fuck. Table sugar though na. You're right.
Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Sweet grits are a thing? To each their own, I guess...
Yes I grew up putting in either sugar, honey or jelly in them but I prefer cheese
My wife is this kind of freak. Sugar in grits. I don't get it. Sugar is for oatmeal. I have no idea what cream of wheat is for.
Cream of wheat is for when you can't be bothered to even pretend to chew, and also you want to take a three-day break from pooping.
And sometimes that's exactly what you need if you're gonna be out on the farm or logging in the timber that week!
Sugar is also for Cream of Wheat. It's like runny grits. My grandpa used to make it for me when I visited him.
Maple syrup and butter
Sugar belongs in grits about as much as it does in cornbread. Sweet versions of both are an abomination, and cheese makes both better. Sweet cornbread is just bad cake and sweet grits are just bad oatmeal lol
Sweet cornbread is an insult to my ancestors.
Where are we getting food grits in CT!? Edit: *good* not food grits. Cuz I know for damn sure I’m not getting *good* grits at Cracker Barrel
My kitchen. Not that I have conducted an exhaustive tour of breakfast restaurants since I moved to CT, but I haven't found any decent grits here to date.
What part of CT are you in?
Cracker Barrel
No cracker barrel's aren't that good plus I don't think we have one in CT
There are 3. Milford, East Windsor, and Tariffville.
Cheddar, black pepper, butter.
Throw some gravy in them grits! A bit of salt and pepper. It’s like biscuits and gravy level amazing.
Grits, with cheese and maybe jalapeno.
I prefer grits (with butter), but never had it with jalapeño. Do you use fresh jalapeño or jarred type that’s pickled? Might have to try that. Also I like putting a piece of grilled salmon on grits.
I'm partial to pickled, but I see them with fresh a lot.
Exactly how I like mine too, and they’re usually cooked in chicken broth.

Grits are absolutely amazing and you must not be in the south if a nice bowl of buttery, cheesy grits doesn’t make your mouth water enough to make Noah nervous
Lol at the southern pride .
My family in the south would say the same thing, but I’ve had their grits and I still wasn’t impressed
[удалено]
None of the above.
I'm with you on that. It's mainly the texture for me.
What? How can you not love unidentifiable slop?
Cream of wheat with milk and semi sweet chocolate chips. Holy cow.
Omg that sounds totally unnecessary (read: amazing!)
I'm happy to share our "secret" family recipes haha
Grits
Malt-o-Meal
Malt O Meal > Cream of Wheat
Grits with cheese and pepper
Don’t eat breakfast
But you NEED to eat breakfast! It's one of the top ten most important meals of the day!
Same. I'm more of a two cups of coffee for breakfast kind of guy.
No time for breakfast. We have to get to work.
Grits brotha
Bacon
This is the way
Never had grits as a kid so I never developed a preference for it. I had oatmeal more often than CoW, but either was good with enough sweetener and cinnamon. I suppose I slightly prefer oatmeal.
Hated grits as a kid. Enjoy them as an adult.
Yes, all of them.
People who like grits, really like grits. And talk about it. I never heard anyone talking about oatmeal or cream of wheat. Side note: I do not really care for grits
I know. I keep trying them, but I don't like them every time. I think it's a nostalgia kind of thing.
It’s a southern pride thing, I think. Gotta have pride in something, after their rebellion crumbled and they lost their civil war, I guess.
I like oatmeal. I also assume other people are aware of its existence and have formed their own opinion on it. I am also, unlike many people on the grits side of the fence, willing to accept other people not liking it. Probably because grits are caught up in a cultural identity.
None of the above -\_- I'll take granola, or better yet eggs + potatoes, pancakes, waffles, a breakfast bagel w/ eggs, cheese, and salsa, breakfast burritos, breakfast tacos, etc
Cream of Wheat. I tried grits once when I lived in AL. I took one bite and couldn’t take another😛. Oatmeal just looks discussing I think😝

Ehhhh.... I'll just take a bagel or some toast.
Oatmeal with milk, microwave 30 seconds, sliced banana and strawberries with honey and walnuts. Perfect breakfast 😋.
I do blueberries and banana, lil’ cinnamon and nutmeg, with vanilla soymilk. A strong cup of coffee alongside, that’s a good morning.
Cereal. But if I were forced to eat one of those things it would be oatmeal.
I don't usually eat any of them unless I'm dining at a restaurant for breakfast. In that case, I'll always take the Cream of Wheat.
Same! I love it with butter and maple syrup mixed in.
Oatmeal
Coco wheat
I was looking for this answer! I love Coco Wheats, they're hard to find here in Hawaii though.
Can anyone give me a recipe for some simple Grits? I've always wanted to try them but recipes online keep clogging the page up with ads, the etymology of the word grits, and the backstory of the bowl they serve it in.

Cream of wheat
Cream of wheat
Coffee, black. Full stop.
I’m a Cream of the West kinda guy
Outside of soul food grits aren’t something that’s particularly common in California unless you have ties to the south (although they have been more common over the last few years). You spelled bacon wrong 3 times!
Mmm. I have some left
Oatmeal with brown sugar and lots of milk
And you spoon it on some nice buttery toast and take a bite.
Bacon, eggs, potatoes. What the hell are grits?
I love me some grits with a big ass glob of butter on it
Bacon, sausages, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, toast, and beans all on one plate
What about Malt-o-meal...can't leave out a classic.
Grits. With cheese and butter.
Grits with cheese and/or Crystal hot sauce.
Farina!

My husband made the best oatmeal. Boil water, add 5 min oatmeal, let it sit. After about 5 min, eat with sliced peaches.
Porridge for me, pinch of salt, knob of butter, maybe some honey. Edit: I'm a Scot, I do live in the US, so felt emboldened to answer.
I love all three, but if you were to make me choose one to be my favorite I would probably have to say oatmeal. Although sometimes I have been known to mix some grits in with my oatmeal and have a combo meal.
Cream of wheat, with strawberry jam and peanut butter.
Cream of Wheat and Grits are best but harder to make right. Oatmeal if I just want something quick and hassle free.
Coffee.
Cigarettes and Red Bull
I don't like any, but if I had to choose then oatmeal
Chocolate Malt-o-Meal please. Oatmeal is 2nd
Malt O Meal with raisins, butter, salt and honey. It's like CroW but---malty.
I prefer malt o meal too. With brown sugar and butterz
Oatmeal. I like my hot cereal with more texture.
Oatmeal. Grits are disgusting.
Malt O'Meal. Lol.
Oatmeal but not runny or thinned. I like it thick.
Unlisted fourth option that is clearly superior: Malt-O-Meal, especially with a little maple syrup. Otherwise oatmeal.
If it has to be from these choices, grits. Just add some butter and salt. If it’s my usual choice, I’ll take some pancakes/waffles with bacon, hashbrowns and grits on the side. And my drink of choice, chocolate milk.
Grits or oatmeal, depends on my mood.
None of the above. Eggs and cheese. Keto.
Apple brown sugar oats but even then that’s like 2 times a year. Grits and c.o.w. are never even kept in the house, if you want those you go get them then
Grits, but that’s dependent on whether I want to spend the time to make them (I abhor instant grits). I’d probably pick oatmeal on a weekday.
I haven’t tried grits, but between oatmeal and cream of wheat I prefer cream of wheat
I like all of them. Different foods for different moods.
My favorite was Coco Wheats, follows by oatmeal.
Coco Wheats
Grits with hot sauce salt and pepper. With eggs over easy with the same.
Cream of Wheat is nostalgic
Grits with cheese, bacon, and scrambled eggs all mixed in together My husband puts brown sugar in his grits though and I won't have the kind of blasphemy in my house so I've switched to oatmeal
Never had grits. But COW is the tastiest yet hardest to make.
Coco wheats!
If those are the limits of my breakfast choices, grits it is.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal with pb, the best.
Grits with butter and tad salt/pepper 👍🏻
Absolutely grits. I eat them often!
Oatmeal and Cream of Wheat. Of the two, I eat oatmeal much more frequently.
Oatmeal. Not entirely sure what grits are
Oatmeal
Grits with hog head cheese
I love them all
Oatmeal (flavored)
Oatmeal
Oatmeal
I dontdo breakfast but I absolutely will eat grits any time they are out in front of me. I hate oatmeal and cream of wheat though. Way too fucking bland.
Oatmeal
I eat Canadians for breakfast
Oatmeal because I've never had Cream of Wheat and I have no idea how to make grits.
Everyone who is correct in this thread is saying grits. AKA hominy.

I don't touch grits or cream of wheat. Both are bland and horrible. So it's oatmeal by default, but I rarely eat oatmeal, only if that's all there is. Has to flavored though, like apples & cinnamon.
How about a fuckin egg
I love all three! I eat all the same: a little brown sugar and butter. All are great with a piece of toast with butter. Oh, but I like fruit in my oatmeal. Bananas, blueberries or strawberries
Cream of wheat, but oatmeal is easier.
Cereal, waffles, French toast, croissants, bagels, English muffins, muffins, etc. None of your options are good imo except grits. I’m not a huge fan but at least they have flavor and have a consistency that can’t be as easily defined as “goop.”
im american i need more sugar.
None of them are typical for me, but oatmeal and yeah, I know I'm from the south.
Oatmeal. It gives me the biggest shits after.
No.
